>> i noticed some smoke in the sky and thought somebody's house burning. >> when chloe is in the car, they investigate. when father and daughter arrive on scene, they see the town's fertilizer plant is on fire. >> it's getting down low now. >> hurt has his phone recording as he and chloe watch the blaze. >> we figured we would maybe get it collapsing on film. >> also recording the fire was a west resident, francisco redarte. >> first responders descend on the scene. one of the volunteer firefighters is west mayor, tommy mushka. >> i was at home. i noticed the smoke, a big pillar of black smoke, out my window. so i gathered my gear and i made my way to the scene. we had chemicals in that building.

millions of hits apiece. >> after i see the video, i say, oh, my god, i was at the right place at the right time. good lord was watching over us because the explosion was so big and here i am, alive, to tell a lot of people, you know, what it was like. >> you have this pretty spring afternoon. and just in a split second, i'm stepping out of truck and looking around. and i see a school destroyed beside me. and then i looked north of me, and there's an apartment complex completely destroyed. and all the people that were out watching the explosion, everybody was gone. and it just seemed like, you know, like a ghost town. >> 15 perish in the fertilizer plant explosion. ten of them are volunteer firefighters. another 252 are injured. the cause of the fire is unknown, but is still under investigation. the fire burns all night. the extent of the devastation is revealed at daybreak.

an average workday at a jewelry exchange quickly turns frightening. but a store manager is ready to face any danger that walks in the door. >> the rob her a knife and a crow bar. he could have hit me, could have killed me. for me, it's like it's either me or him. >> june 28th, 2013, calgary, in canada's alberta province. it's early afternoon and a few customers are doing business in a gold and silver exchange shop run by simon zeiter. >> we sell precious metals, gold and silver bars. we take them off of the stock market and whenever you come into our store, you buy and sell. if a customer comes in and he

would like to buy some gold or silver, we have it in stock. >> the security video is silent but the cameras record whoever is this the store from two angles. >> the two customers were two investors and a lady who was selling some jewelry. we were just having a great conversation of the finances and the outlook of how things would be. >> zeiter, behind the counter, is out of camera view. he is watching two men outside the glass door. >> it felt wrong, their presence. i saw them already before they entered the store. and i have a switch on my right side where i just lock the store. i was reaching for the switch that's like a panic button and closes the door, but i was too late. >> because it's bright outside, the camera doesn't show the men until they open the door. when the two masked men barge in, one of them tries to lock the door behind him but can't. >> when they walk in, they are like, this is a robbery, give me everything you have. and i was like no way. >> at first, the customers are too stunned to react. >> they didn't know what to do, because they weren't sure what i was going to do, how i was going to react.

'cause if i'm not going to do anything, why should they risk their lives? one guy had a knife and the other one had a crowbar. the one guy went behind the counter towards me with the knife. and the other guy was like, don't do anything stupid, you know, threatening the lady. >> one of the customers opens the door for another to escape. but he doesn't run when he has the chance. instead, he grabs a stool and bars the door. >> one of my customers just helped the woman outside the door, and they let her leave. i don't know why. i guess they had more important things to think about. the men are so focused on grabbing the gold, they don't realize decider has a different kind of metal behind his counter, an aluminum baseball bat. >> there was jewelry on the counter that the lady was going to sell. because the guy broke the glass, all the jewelry fell in. so the guy was trying to pick up the jewelry that fell into the case and pick up all the other stuff that was in there, too.

and while he was doing that, he wasn't watching me, so he couldn't see me swinging the bat. so for me, when i swang the bat, i was, like, go for it, we'll see what happens. >> with one swing, the man is knocked out. >> i think i hit him way too hard. like because i just went with full force and just hit him on the head. so he just went down and went -- he was on the ground. i was like oh, no, what did i do, right? he had a mask on, i could see the blood going into his mask. it was a scary feeling because i was like i didn't know -- what did i do now, you know? he just went down. he didn't brace himself or anything. >> the second man tries to drag his injured accomplice out of the store. but when he meets resistance at the door, he drops his partner and attempts to save himself. >> so when i clocked the guy, they were just panicked, but then the customer took the bar stool they had. it looked like those lion trainers in the circus, he was

like, you were not going anywhere until the cops come. for me i was like, why? please just get those people out of here. >> the man escapes, but not without zeiter taking one last swing. the other would-be robber is disoriented. he attempts to steady himself. >> he was coming around again. so one of my customers, he saw it. so he came in there and just made sure like he would stay down, basically. so he gave him a few nice kicks and kicked the knife away. >> the customer then steps out of the store and signals for help from local firefighters who just happened to be across the street. >> so they came over. and then they were looking at the situation. they weren't exactly sure what was happening, but they could see he was wearing a mask so

they figured he was the bad guy. they just tried to him but he was still like thinking he would get away. i don't think he was thinking they were going to hold them down. because they are firemen, not cops, you know? he was screaming the whole time, like when they are holding him down. he was really strong because there were four or five firemen just holding him down. in the beginning, he was stupid, but the more conscious he got the more he just wanted to get out of the situation. >> a few minutes later, police arrived and the masked man is taken into custody. he is charged with robbery and possession of a weapon. he hasn't pled yet. his accomplice is not caught. the men strike out on this apparent robbery because zeiter strikes back. >> i do not play baseball, but it worked. in another store, a manager takes on a thief almost twice her size. >> i knew i was a strong person before that happened, but i didn't know i was that strong. >> the ordeal is captured by several store security cameras. september, 2013, san antonio, texas.

assistant store manager juanika mckinney reports to her job at the dollar general. >> that particular day it was pretty busy, constant traffic in and out. >> by the end of the day, the heavy store traffic winds down. security camera video shows one employee manning a register in the front while mckinney works in the back. >> i usually head towards the back to make my runs, double-check all the aisle, make sure everything is nice. >> about 10:00 p.m. a man walks through the door, and within seconds, his intentions are clear. security camera video shows him make a beeline for the register. he sticks what appears to be a pistol in the store clerk's back. he forces her over to another area. mckinney, still several aisle away, has a hunch that something is wrong. >> when it got too quiet, i realized something was going on. as i was making my way to the warehouse area, the cashier called my name. and she doesn't usually scream

my name across the store like that. i immediately went to the front to see what was going on. the cashier wasn't in her normal area, so i went looking for her in the break room. she was there with the robber. he had the gun held to her head. i freaked -- i like literally jumped back. and he was like oh, no, get back in there. >> in the break room, they are out of camera view. >> he was telling us to get on the ground and then he was asking about the money. >> frightened, the women do as they are told. security camera video shows the man forcing the cashier to lock the front door. then he takes them to a storage room in the back, where he demands that mckinney tie up her coworker. >> i was freaking out. i initially even told him, i can't do that. he's like get down there and do it. so, we got down on the ground and i did it as loosely as i could. i don't want to hurt her. and then i got up and then he was like okay, let's go to the front of the store now and get the money. >> mckinney says he is familiar with the store's layout and

knows about a timed, password-protected safe. >> he is like i know we have to wait nine minutes. he knows we have to wait. he knows there is another area. >> mckinney punches in the password, but with nine minutes to wait, the robber makes use of the time. he has mckinney take out the cash drawer from the register. it's then emptied into a plastic bag off camera. he also does some last-minute shopping. >> he wanted to go get some cigarettes. so, go to the cigarette cabinet. he only wanted a particular brand. i thought that was really crazy. and i was like, okay, this guy is really comfortable. he is having a good time, it seem. and we go back and he is like how much longer for the safe? >> under his watchful eye, mckinney does a time check on the safe again. i'm telling him how much longer, and during the time i had to push the code back in to see. as i wait for the safe, i'm tell him i'm waiting, i'm waiting. he's getting irritated. and he is like, do you really

want to lose your life over this money? and i was like i'm not doing anything. i'm trying to open the safe. i just have to wait. he's, like, i'm not playing with you. now he is getting angry. >> with two minutes before the safe unlocks the robber wants to pick up one more item. >> he is like show me where the bags are. i take him to the bags picking out a bag and he is like i want a black on black bag and i'm like this guy is living it up. i'm getting if bag and putting the money into the bookbag and the money bag just falls and the natural reaction for both of us is to go down and pick it up with me. he gets down like this. his hoodie falls over his head and he is all discombobulated and i reached over and grab it, and the gun just pushed. >> it turns out the gun is a toy. >> so after that, it was over. i was, like, wait a minute. like you have been terrorizing us for the last 20 minutes, and you don't even have a real weapon? so at that time, i was like, game on.

>> he may not have a real gun, but he is an imposing figure. still, she lungs at him. the petite woman drags the 200-pound thief to his knees. >> a whole new reaction came over me. i felt just a sense of empowerment almost, like i was really trying to hurt him. i really wanted to hurt him. i really wanted to hurt him. i wanted to, like, beat this guy down for doing to this to us. i was a little angry. and then at one point during the struggle i was like i can't continue to fight this guy i've got to get some help. this guy is is a guy, he's bigger than me. i decided, okay, let me stop fighting and get out of here. that's when i tried to run. but he had my wrist. so i was like, well, you can come with me. i decided to drag him to the door. i was going to get out of there. i was going to get help some way. so i'm struggling to get the door open. and that's when he like jumps on my back. i'm like oh, my gosh, this is not happening. so i finally get the door unlocked. and i, like, fall out the door.

he's on top of me. and then he sees that there is someone else outside. and that's when it's like, okay, and he hightails it off. >> mckinney's coworker in the back room wiggles her hands free from the loose knot. she dashes to the front of the store. mckinney calls the police. when officers arrive to investigate, it doesn't take long to crack the case. >> he dropped his keys. so he ran to his car, and he couldn't leave, so he hid down in the seat and when the police came, they got him. >> the masked man is michael gaines. he is convicted of robbery and sentenced to six years in prison. he isn't charged with armed robbery because his gun was a fake. police also learn that his visit to mckinney's store wasn't his first. >> he was a customer. i recognized his voice, and i was like, i can't believe this is someone that i've dealt with, doing this, you know, for him to be acting like that. >> mckinney and her colleague aren't hurt, but she says if something like this ever happens again, she'll just hand over the cash. >> just because this outcome was

and this van started flying toward me in the intersection, and a motorcycle jets towards me across the street. i thought he was a terrible driver. jesus [ bleep ]. he and i almost have a collision. that's when i bike around him and i thought it was funny that this guy was such a terrible driver. >> what happens next is anything but a joke. >> then he pulled up to me. when he pulled up, he started pulling out a pistol. when i first saw the pistol, i felt he was road raging because we almost got into an accident. and so there was a moment of confusion on my behalf. >> i don't know what you are saying, man. >> my spanish is terrible but i definitely know what he was saying. i knew he meant backpack. and then it was clear to me when he said backpack he was looking to steal my camera gear. >> hennessy has $4,000 worth of camera equipment in his bag. he has to think fast because his life may depend on what he does next. does he take flight, or stay and fight? he refuses to hand over the backpack.

the tour guide was surrounding me. he hadn't shot yet and now he was in a situation where he would have to shoot three people. >> hennessy runs again. >> definitely obvious at that point, his entire interest was the backpack. he wasn't interested in shooting anybody. when i was running, i saw in my peripheral vision him running in the opposite direction. he was bailing out on whatever he was doing. i felt this banging on my head. i forgot i had the gopro on my forehead. it looks like i am taking a selfie, but i was just seeing if i was recording and the red light was flashing. luckily, there was a police officer close by. i was recording that whole thing. with an attempted armed robbery caught on camera and the suspect's face on video, police finds the suspect within a week. so far, no charges are filed against him. while promoting tourism is their

rims. i mean, they run the tires off of them in these high-speed chases. and this was no different. >> they are not going to go very far. tire steel is not very good, so they are winding it done very quickly? >> the vehicle grinds to a stop and a flame shoots out from the back wheel well just inches away from the car's gas tank. police close in on it, but they robbers still refuse to surrender. me. >> once the car chase is over, many times the foot chase begins. but the police officer was able to drag him down. >> i thought if this guy goes into the pawn shop, he is going to be get shot. looked like he was running right for the pawn shop. at the last minute, he turned and went away and he was able to get tased and put into custody. >> the man is down. >> there is another one over there. three. i'm seeing another one over there. >> three total. >> uh-huh. >> wesley kidder, curtis spencer and bethany hightower plead guilty to burglary and

i've been volunteering at the international bird rescue for about 8 years. we see birds with all types of problems. when a bird gets oil on its feathers, it destroys their waterproofing. dawn is absolutely essential to the wash process, we use tons of it. i was surprised that they use something that i use at home, to wash the oil off the birds. it's a wonderful feeling to be able to say that i helped return this bird back to the wild. i love wildlife, how do you love wildlife?

caught in the act. a homeowner confronts a man trying to break into his house. >> he got one hook on the porch, and i just realized, if i'm going to have a tussle with somebody i figure i better get it on camera. >> november, 2014, seattle, washington. andrew myers and his girlfriend, megan pirowitz, live in busy part of the city. >> we are on an arterial road so we get a lot of traffic. and we are on a corner corner house, so we get a lot of walking traffic to bus stops and stuff. >> it's not just meyer's residence, he runs a media company. >> my business is downstairs, and i live upstairs with my girlfriend and my dog. i've lived here four years now. i definitely would call this home. >> it's saturday evening. as the couple settles in for the night, someone walks through the front gate. >> it's always somebody that works for us here just coming or going. being that it was 7:30, we were laughing, fully expecting it to be somebody that we know. >> myers peek out of a window and recognizes the visitor. but it's not a friend.

four days earlier, a neighbor tells myers about seeing a suspicious man wandering around his property in the wee hours of the morning. he scrolls through his home security videos for a look. >> we were watching the cameras waiting for the guy to come down the fence line and come in the yard. all of a sudden, he comes from inside the house. i tell you, i haven't been that scared in a very, very long time. >> myers doesn't save the video, but he keeps pixelated screenshots of the man who stayed in his unlocked base men for several hours, leaving at day break, wearing a memento from his stay. >> he stole one of our shirts from the studio downstairs. you could see when he was leaving that he was casing the place. >> myers immediately upgrades his security system by adding a chime sound that alerts him when someone walks through the gate. now he is watching the man walk through his yard and head for the side door that leads to his workspace. >> he can see me because i'm

standing in a dark room. sure enough, it's, like, the same guy. i'm like, babe, it's the dude. i don't think i ever would have really had any too many hard feelings about the first night that he spend here. i left my door unlocked. thing happen. when i looked out the window and saw his face and that he was back, it confused me what his intent was and any sympathy that i had for the man left. >> he jiggles the door, but it's locked. he circles around to the front door. in his socks, myers confronts the man while they are both out of camera view. myers says the unwelcomed guest takes the first swing. he pulls the man down the stairs and into camera view. the man may have about 40 pounds on myers, but myers is an army veteran, skilled at combat fighting. >> when i wake up in the morning, i feel like a pretty tough guy. i'm coming more to grips with the fact that i definitely don't look like one.

to strategize a way out of the scenario left him. you will see him sort of sigh and kick his shoes off. i think that's the moment where the fight sort of left him. >> police arrest the man and escort him off the premises. no charges have been filed at recorded, myers gestures to the camera. later that night he uploads the video to youtube and it quickly goes vierg. viral. >> i'm sort of a dramatic person on youtube. i had made light of the situation all week trying to set everyone's mine at ease that this wasn't something they needed to worry about. for me, it was like this was the conclusion of the story. >> but what if something like this happens again? >> i definitely will never find myself out there in socks and underwear again. >> from a fight with fists to a brawl with bounce? september 30th, 2014. gold coast, new south wales,

she does every day. >> jeremy is riding his brother's bicycle with his mother close by. >> he was easily within my view. if you can see your child you are never really worried about your child. >> what she doesn't see is the neighbor's dog on the other side of this suv. without warning the dog attacks. >> it wasn't really until i heard him scream for me that i realized something was terribly wrong. when i saw the way he was jerking him, the way he was pulling him off of his bicycle, it never crossed my mind that the dog could actually have my son's leg. i assumed because of the jerking motion and the pulling motion he had my son's pants and it wasn't until later that i realized oh, my gosh, he had my son. >> and just as quickly, tara the cat springs into action, defending her boy. >> i have no idea what i would have done without her. she tackled the dog completely. she chased him away. and took care of my son when i had no idea what was happening.

>> erica runs off to make sure the dog isn't coming back. roger rushes home from work to be with his family. he's talking to the police when he has a revelation. >> that's when it dawned on me to check the footage from the security cameras. i grabbed my laptop, logged in and sat out front with the officer and we watched it for the first time. and that was when we saw tara come out. and our first reaction to that was, oh, my god, did you see the cat? i think we rewound the tape about, you know, four or five times. just rewatching it. you see tara kind of run after him. she flips around right then, sees erica, my wife, coming to jeremy's aid, takes off again after the dog, and chases him a little further to make sure he's clear, then comes back and stood right by jeremy's side the entire time. >> i'd definitely say tara was acting on her fight or flight response. she definitely was ready for that fight and she was putting up the battle in that moment. >> she really did that out of a sense of love for him because

there's no other way that i think a cat would want to take on a dog of that size. we've had dogs in the yard before and she's never gone after them. so for her i think it was a fight response to help jeremy out. >> jeremy gets ten stitches in his leg and makes a full recovery. roger posts the video of the fearless feline online. it quickly goes viral and gets national media attention. >> the video that is lighting up the internet today shows a young boy in bakersfield, california being attacked by a neighbor's dog. and then an unexpected hero comes to the rescue, his pet cat tara. >> tara's reacted i think like any cat would. you know, with requests for more salmon. >> i think she is definitely wanting to stay in the spotlight as far as she is concerned, continuing to to be pampered and loved on. >> we've always loved tara. so it's never been an issue. but you know, i think she definitely deserves a little bit extra, every day. >> tara is my hero.
