weekend. one man is showing a whole lot of strength in the polls. two nbc polls show donald trump running strong. he leads the pack in iowa he places second. meanwhile, hillary clinton continues to lead big in iowa on the democratic side but her margin over bernie sanders is smaller in new hampshire. kristen welker has more. >> there's a movement going on. it's a very strong movement. >> reporter: donald trump, known for his brash style and controversial comments is surging. he tops the pack in new hampshire with a seven-point lead over jeb bush. and two points behind scott walker in iowa. 44% of voters view him unfavorably. that number jumps to 53 in new hampshire.

hillary clinton tried to get away from her e-mails and back to policies. >> we need to have a democratic president in the white house. >> reporter: but saturday she was forced to defend the use of a private e-mail account when she was secretary of state. doesn't the fact that we're having this debate underscore the problem of using a private server when you were secretary of state? >> not at all. no. this would be the same debate since the vast majority that i sent and received was already on the state department system unclassified state department system. >> reporter: and the new nbc merist poll shows it could be taking a toll. topping bernie sanders by 29 points in iowa and 13 points in new hampshire 20% of iowa's democrat voters view her unfavorably and that number gets even higher in new hampshire. 23%. to what extent do you worry that the e-mail issue would hurt secretary clinton in a general election? >> i think it would hurt her a

morning. first let's show you the arrival. president obama touched down a short time ago, about an hour and a half ago in ethiopia. there was a ceremony at the national palace. he got the red carpet treatment, a military guard escort and then he sat down with the prime minister. we're expecting in the next couple of hours a press conference between the two of them. the real highlight today could end up being a meeting with several african nations, including the african union. they've got a deadline coming up in a few weeks, august 17th, to accept essentially a peace pact between those nations. they're trying to deal with the violence going on right now in south sudan. the white house says the u.s. wants to put pressure on that process to make it happen and team up with key nations to try to bring peace to that region. one of the things we're bringing to that region is a lot of money. $40 million just in this fiscal year for humanitarian aid. betty? >> tracie thank you.

a frantic search is under way this morning off the search of florida. rescuers have desperately been searching the ocean overnight. two young boy ss. their boat was found capsized. nar neighbor hall of fame quarterback joe namath asked for prayers as their family remains optimistic. >> perry is just as sharp as can be and austin has been on the water for a while. they're just as fine as can be these two young fellows. >> we're not sure how much food or water they have. we're positive they're strong and they know what they're doing out there. >> the families are offering a $100,000 reward for anyone who finds the children. bobby kristina brown the only child of late singer whitney houston and bobby brown,

>> being a newlywed really is a beautiful, beautiful thing. >> reporter: in the tabloids they were a controversial couple. her mother had taken gordon in when he was younger and he was often seen as bobbi kristiny's adoptive brother. her father later said they were never legally wed. january 31st at her home near atlanta, police say a friend discovered bobbi kristina face down and unresponsive in her bathtub. for months her family kept vigil as she was put on a ventilator moved to a rehab facility and finally placed in hospice care. >> now that she is not here i am my mother. i am my mother and i am my mother's child. >> i think in the end, bobbi kristina brown will be remembered largely in context of her mother but hopefully she'll be remembered as the light of her mother's life. >> reporter: bobbi kristina brown was just 22. gabe gutierrez, nbc news atlanta. >> so young. funerals will be taking

welcome back to first look on this monday morning. overnight, thunderstorms have cooled you off from baltimore to philadelphia. new york city had a pretty good downpour around 3:00 am. few storms existing right along the connecticut coast, few there in southern rhode island. in general, this is starting to weaken and head toward coastal areas. probably until about 10:00 am the sun will come back out in about all of these locations. as far as the wet weather goes and any problem weather goes during the day today, i don't think we'll have a lot of it. yesterday another flash flooding in indianapolis.

another inch of rain. now this is the all-time wettest month in the history of indianapolis. the records started there about 1850, 1860. this was a big record. over now, 13" of rain this month alone. very soggy. heat advisories, hot weather conditions, missouri all the way down to louisiana. this is how it's been the last month or so. as far as heat index late this afternoon, i think we'll top out about 100 to 110 from new orleans all the way up to omaha, 107 in little rock 106 there in memphis. during this week all the hot weather begins to shift to the east. it will start to feel like 100 plus from florida to the carolinas throughout this week. even areas up to new york city we should be 95 to 100. >> i'm shocked by those triple digits across the u.s. >> one of the hottest weeks of the summer. >> summer is here. stories making news this morning, police in milwaukee are on high alert after video of an apparent lion sighting went

viral last week. a police officer spotted a cat-like animal at a nearby creek. unfortunately, though they weren't able to find the lion. according to the milwaukee zoo, none of its lions is missing. check out this footage of a polish fighter jet taking off and flying straight up as if it were launched into space. the takeoff seems to start off pretty normally until the pilot presses the make like a rocket button causing the plane to fly vertically. now to france. this is just beautiful. hot air balloons rose to new heights yesterday, breaking the world record for the most hot air balloons soaring into the air at the same time. 433 balloons took to the sky from an air base in eastern france. kind of majestic. still ahead, hillary clinton's plan to help the environment. plus fighting among senators and accusations of lying. scrambled politics is next. go roam sleep in sleep out star gaze

a better deal. >> best deal. bestest deal. >> exactly. the devil is in the details. let's get to these details with hillary clinton. she's, you know on the road touting this renewable energy plan. could this plan be a game changer? >> i'm not sure it's a game changer. i think it's very indicative of how hillary will campaign for the next 400 and some odd days. she was asked about fossil fuels at a campaign event in new hampshire. would you ban fossil fuel on public lands? she didn't give the answer the activists really wanted but came out several weeks later and said here is how i will fix this problem. she's not going to come to the front with everything everybody wants to hear but a deal that everyone will handle an alternative versus a ban is much more popular on a campaign trail. >> it's pretty extensive, though. she wants, what renewable energy sources in everyone's home something along those lines. >> climate change is very important for the progressive movement which she struggles with. she is definitely liberal

enough. she's very cozy with certain donors on wall street. she's been in politics forever. she is maybe not the hope and change candidate but this is a very concrete proposal where she can say i'm going to make big changes, not just talk about this. >> we alluded to ted cruz earlier. he really got a smackdown by his own party. is that going to hurt him in his campaign if your own party is pushing against you? >> he has always championed himself as someone who can take on his own party and smack them down. he is struggling to do even that. i think this is really the donald trump effect. donald trump has come in and become the gop's terrorizer in chief and cruz is losing that title. you've seen trump's poll numbers rise as cruz's have fallen. this party is saying we have enough troubles. you can sit down senator cruz. >> quite a statement. thank you, jane. just ahead the name of this competition translates into a flying day in german. but these contraptions -- yeah they didn't do much flying at
