taliban leader mullah omar is dead. mullah omar became a wanted man after he shelt erdered osama bin laden in afghanistan leading up to the 9/11 attacks. omar has not been seen in public since 2001. officials believe he died over two years ago despite letters published as recently as july 14 that have been attributed to the leader. chief correspondent bill nealy joins us from london. if he died two years ago, why would we only be hearing about it now? >> very good question tamron. good morning to you. those reports of his death are unconfirmed but they are gaining in number and credibility. remember, mullah omar is one of the most wanted men in the world, the one-eyed leader of the afghan taliban for almost a quarter century. else the man who welcomed osama

may of this year. omar has been in hiding since 2001 for 14 years. he's also been in ill health and he's been so reclusive, it's thought he was only photographed twice, those photographs you see on the screen we think are him, but we're not absolutely sure. one senior taliban official in pakistan has told nbc news he is 100% sure omar is dead but he won't say until a successor is chosen. . those reports come in thick and fast from afghanistan. i'm from pakistan. tamron? >> it is felt this could have something to do with negotiations going on between afghanistan's new president and members of the taliban. >> that's right. i mean either alive or dead mullah omar's taliban is in peace talks with the afghan government even as it continues killing afghan troops.

the decision handed down by the league yesterday is unfathomable to me. six months removed from the amf championship game the league has no hard evidence of anybody doing anything to tamper with the psi levels of footballs. i continue to believe and unequivocally support tom brady. >> this was new glands patriot owner robert kraft defiantly responding to the nfl's decision to up hold the four-game suspension of his star quarterback, tom brady, after deflategate. addressing the media at the start of the patriots camp this morning, kraft apologized to patriots fans and to tom brady. he also says he regrets not taking legal action against the league. >> i've come to the conclusion that this was never about doing
8:14 am
what was fair and just s.. >> this morning tom brady is also fighting back saying he did nothing wrong. in a lengthy facebook post brady writes despite submitting to hours of testimony over the past six months, it is disappointing that the commissioner upheld my suspension based upon a standard that it was probable that i was generally aware of misconduct. the fact is that neither i, nor any equipment person did anything of which we have been accused. the commissioner accuses brady of having his cell phone destroyed just before meeting investigators who requested it as evidence. brady said to that to suggest that i broke a phone to avoid giving the nfl information it requested is completely wrong. msn msnbc steve kornacki joins us outside gillette stadium.
8:15 am
here we have robert kraft coming out swinging saying he shouldn't have trusted the league. he is part of the league. what happens next steve? >> reporter: that's the key question. what was bob kraft trying to accomplish with that where he went off roger goodell. roger goodell and bob kraft have been very close allies for many years. bob kraft was probably the closest ally with roger goodell in things that have led to suspicion over the years to other owners. that's sort of the back story here. the question is what is kraft trying to achieve going after goodell, in going after the league so intensely? he accepted a few months ago the penalties that the league the nfl, imposed on the new england patriots as an organization because of deflategate. those penalties included a fine of a million dollars and loss of
8:16 am
a draft pick. bob said look i accepted those penalties back then because i believed it would ease the way in the hopes that this four-game suspension of tom brady could go away. he now thinks that's a mistake. so here's the question. is there some legal avenue that bob kraft could now pursue or by accepting those penalties a few months ago, did he effectively take the legal option off the table going forward. the other possibility here, too is look. we're getting out of the nfl season. the players are here today coming off of training camp. when we looking for an owner who was trying to rally his own team trying to show faith with his players and getting the team back. >> the issue with the cell phone here, he seemed particularly bothered by this. tom brady as well saying i didn't destroy my phone. what do we know is true or false here? >> yeah so you try to reconcile two different statements here. you have roger goodell in this statement from the nfl saying
8:17 am
within 24 hours of tom brady's scheduled meeting with ted wells and the investigators who were looking into deflategate, within 24 hours of that tom brady instructed an assistant to destroy the cell phone knowing this cell phone was going to be accepted by ted wells and the investigators. now you have tom brady saying i replaced a broken cell phone. and he says he did not intentionally destroy it to keep it from the investigators, but it does leave open -- he's saying he replaced a broken cell phone. how did it get broken? it seems awfully fishy it would have been broken within 24 hours of this meeting. you think of the old clinton thing, what is the meaning of the word is? there may be some very fine print there. >> if someone broke a phone on purpose and had their assistant do it, there is noma saujo massaging of that. if someone instructed an
8:18 am
individual to break a phone, i don't know how you change that if it happened. how do you massage that? >> what they're saying is tom brady had a practice of destroying his cell phones as just a matter of practice every four or five months. if the phone is broken they're saying the basic brady pattern would be -- believe me it seems far-fetched to me too, the practice standard would be to destroy it. >> every four months because he doesn't want someone to have access to the phone so he breaks it when he replaces it -- i don't know. let me bring in someone who may have more say about this. the nation's sports editor our man, dave ziron. i laugh at this because it seems so ridiculous in so many ways but we are talking about someone's legacy. to tom brady that means the world to him to the patriots to their fans this is a very real issue here. there are some serious allegations that could have a lingering impact on the league here, dave.
8:19 am
>> tamron you're laughing because you're a cowboys fan. >> amen brother. thank you. >> we wouldn't be talking about it this way. there are two simultaneous cases going on right before us. there is going to be the case in court where tom brady is going to go in there with the nflpa and say the national football league did not give him a fair process that led to this suspension. i actually think he's going to win that. but there is a secondary trial that's taking place, and it's taking place as we're having this discussion, and that's the court of public opinion. tom brady is pushing 40 years old. he was set to retire as probably the defacto greatest quarterback to play in the national football league and you can ask people like barry bonds or roger clemens what it does to you when you leave your sport with scandal stuck to you. it affects everything. >> is that a fair comparison, though? come on. >> i don't think it's fair at all. i'm totally talking court of public opinion. i think the report is absurd.
8:20 am
there is no evidence in it at all. there's none. and the cell phone thing, i really want to point this out, one of the things tom brady said on his facebook page and i spoke with people and they backed this up. tom brady, may not know he's a serious guy and they don't want to set a precedent of handing over a cell phone to the league. he really did feel that was a principle. >> that goes beyond sports because that's a question we've been posing along the way. your employer says i need you to prove that the copier you're looking at is -- people would say, can i your cell phone? and he says are you crazy? i don't give my cell phone to anybody. >> and tom brady is going to go for the judge saying what wrojer goodell did, take this as a four-game suspension.
8:21 am
now, the nfl will say that was collectively bargained, that's the way things go. but a collective bargaining agreement does not supercede the transformation. if it violates my constitutional rights to any sort of dual process. >> it's on the "today" show and he's got his brady hat, his brady jersey. i jokingly said i can't shake your hand because i'm a cowboys fan. he is a royal fan down to the teeth. i had a coworker who just said the guy is arrogant but he's also a cowboys fan. does it boil down to that? >> this is about roger goodell and whether or not he should be in the kmiger's chair.

local professional guides to ensure a legal hunt. palmer already has a felony record over the illegal killing of a black bear in wisconsin. that was in 2008. he has said he would cooperate with authorities, but right now his whereabouts unknown. now, this memorial small memorial to cecil, i was seen right outside his dentist's office which remains closed today. joining me now, renowned life biologist, animal conservationalist, jeff. thank you for your time. just devastating when this lion was lured out of the area apparently tied him to the back of a truck, lured him out, and was shot with this arrow and later killed some 48 hours after that. jimmy kimmel -- i'll play it in a second -- he asked the question, what is it?
8:47 am
why would someone pay $50,000 to do something like this? how do you answer that? >> it's really remarkable what has unfolded here. it's quite shocking. for me the biggest violation here is they did this in a national park. whether you're in the united states in yellowstone or whether you're in a national park in zimbabwe these are protected sanctuaries dedicated to wildlife and habitat, and it is illegal to bait and lure animals out. he may say that he was not aware of the regulations or he may say that he was relying on his guides tamron but every individual in a situation like this needs to be responsible and held accountable and be completely aware of what the regulations and rules are when it comes to this activity. >> you know by the numbers according to the international fund for animal welfare, the population of african lions have been reduced by 50% in the last three decades, now just 32,000. so for people to say he is an

adventurer, he likes this for sport, seeing a lion as plentiful as everything else they don't see these numbers and understand, i don't think. >> a lot of people don't realize that today lions are in serious trouble because of habitat loss and climate change and because of human animal conflict when it comes to like agriculture and livestock, the population of african lions today is down to about 25,000 animals, so it's pretty low. >> let me play this moment last night with jimmy kimmel. he was really overtaken with emotion talking about this. let's listen in. >> the big question is why are you shooting a lion in the first place? i mean i'm honestly curious to know why a human being would feel compelled to do that. how is that fun? i'm not against hunting, if you're hunting to eat or help keep the animal population healthy or to part of your culture or something, that's one thing. but if you're some evil dentist who wants a lion's head over the

fireplace in his man cave so his douchebag buddies can drink scotch and tell him how awesome it is that's just venomous. >> this particular animal cecil, was well known, but this happens, as we pointed out, this black bear incident with him in 2008 by other individuals, not just the dentist. >> people aren't following regulations in the laws when it comes to hunting. you bring up an excellent point, tamron in that this wasn't just an ordinary lion this was cecil. he was 13 years old. he was symbolic. he was like the ambassador of this national park. and now that he's gone there will be great chaos and instability within his pride. the first thing that's going to happen or likely happen is that the next competing male is going to move in kill all his cubs to bring the female into esteres.

it's like the "game of thrones." >> he's put on facebook a lot of people impacted by this in his office that can't show up now that those doors are shuttered. we don't know how long. >> and also you have to remember these guys are using the excuse that they didn't see it was collared and didn't know that. if you're bow hunting, you're usually 40 yards or closer to your target. >> and some would assume be able to see that. all right. thank you so much. it's great to see you. we haven't seen you in a while. obviously sad under these circumstances. thank you very much. >> thanks. up next, a day care center is under investigation after two children suffer second and third degree burns from the sun. it is one of the stories we're updating around the news nation.

we are following breaking news right now. we're just learning wreckage from a plane has washed up on a french island. let's get more details than that from tom costello.
8:54 am
he joins us now with more. tom, when did this wreckage happen? what do we know here? >> what we know is this is wreckage that has washed ashore on a french island in the indian ocean. the island -- it looks there, as you can see that it comes from an aircraft. now, there are a couple of photos here on twitter coming from this french island. again, this is off the coast of madagascar, so it is in the indian ocean, but it is a significant distance west from where they believe malaysia 370 went down. i have asked our aviation expert, captain john cox who is a retired airbus a-320 pilot to look at the photographs and he has done that. he says it is unlikely he believes that this is the wreckage of malaysia 370, which as you may recall was a boeing 777. he thinks this may in fact be the tail from a plane, a plane that went down in 2009 which
8:55 am
killed all but one of 153 people on board. a plane going from yemen to the camoros islands. it crashed in june of 2009. this wreckage had a lot of shells on it suggesting it had been in the water for some time. john says listen he doesn't see any slats on the plane. he also says that's a very big clue. it's not an air foil that does both high speeds and low speeds. ooengs he thinks this is the tail section of an airbus a-310, unlikely to be a 777, one of the biggest passenger transport planes in the sky. really that's all we know right now. this is on a french island in the indian ocean. this wreckage washing ashore. and the initial read from our experts is unlikely to be malaysia 370. >> that does it for this edition of "news nation." i'm tamron hall.
