theater. as additional officer, the s.w.a.t. team entered that theater it was very thick with chemical spray with irritant. gas masks were brought into those officers as they attempted to get this person into custody. other officers had set up at the back of the theater. ultimately the suspect, who is -- i'm told was wearing a surgical mask came out of the back door of the theater. metro police officers at the back of the theater outside engaged him. he was shot, fatally wounded and has been pronounced deceased here at the scene. this person has been tentatively identified as a 51-year-old local man. his identity has not been confirmed. we are working to do that now. the actions of that first officer who went in the theater to engage this individual may well have saved multiple individuals inside that theater,
1:01 pm
as officers worked to evacuate everyone in here. obviously this is an eight plex. there are eight theaters here. he remained confined we believe to that mad max theater after the first officer encountered him. the suspect remained inside the mad max showing and didn't go elsewhere. he was wearing a backpack on the front on his chest. the bomb squad, our hazardous device unit is still working on clearing the materials that he had with him. we know he had a gun. which we have not examined at this point. we know that he had a -- something between a hatchet and an ax. and then this backpack on the front of himself wearing a surgical mask. the mask may have been to try to negate the effects of the chemical spray he had brought

1:03 pm
i do know when the sergeant first came up on the scene the three persons the man and two women were coming out. the man with the superficial wound we believe are from the ax and then the two women who had been doused in the face with the chemical spray. >> how long did all this play out over? >> the call to the police department was about 1:13. and officers were engaging that very very quickly, within two minutes. and then -- i don't have the precise time as to when he came out of theater. but suffice it to say the police response was swift. and this man was contained in this theater despite the pepper spray going off and everything else until he ultimately emerged out the back door. >> this police officer was obviously extremely brave. an example of a high class officer. talk about how he's doing right now. >> well, you know, in situations like this, police officers will tell you that their training kicks in.

the metro police department is highly trained in active-shooter situations. we have trained on it actually at the old bellevue mall here in the city. and this officer let his training kick in and his training was obviously very effective and it worked. >> when he came into the theaters did he give any indication he was a troubled individual or anything like that? did she say anything in. >> we are still putting that scenario together. i don't know what he may have said, if anything, here in the theater. we have report before he came to the theater he was somewhere else in a public place in this area and may have cuttuttered something. we are still investigating. >> do you know how badly wounded he might have been before he tried to escape? >> i do no not. >> do you know the race of nationality of this man. >> he's white. >> we also --

>> how many people were in the theater beyond the three? >> when the officer encountered him, we believe that he was the only one in there at that present time. although i must say the officers did not know that. the officer who encountered him first went up to the projection room and then tried to work his way down and ultimately came to a level where he encountered the gunman. and then when the s.w.a.t. team got in the room was full of this chemical irritant. it was somewhat cloudy in there. the entire theater has been cleared. there is no one with any substantive injury other than the suspect who was fatally wounded by met wrote police. >> did they -- when they were in the theater, he started spraying with the pepper, did the individuals flee the theater at that point? do you know? >> that is my supposition, yes. because when the sergeant arrived he was one of the first ones here. there were two officers here before him. but he was the first supervisor

fortunately after at least two or three searches at this point we've only been required to treat three patients. the first patient was a 58-year-old male. all three patients had been sprayed with some sort of irrita irritant, which we believe was a pepper spray, sprayed by the salient. the 58-year-old male also suffered from what was described as the superficial wound to his shoulder or arm from what may be a hatchet. and two women, a 53-year-old woman and 17-year-old woman also treated for exposure to pepper spray. they are going to be speaking to police about their experiences and what they saw. we're very, very grateful that we only have three pepper spray exposure cases to treat at this point. this could have been a lot worse. and we're extraordinarily pleased that the police response was so effective and quick on this. at this point we're going to stay on scene as long as it

1:11 pm
know they have a very brave police department a very well-trained police department. their training kicked in. they were here within a minute or two of this initial report. this guy was won find to one place. and as he came out of the theater, emerged from the theater, the officers engaged him and he was fatally wounded. the threat at this theater is over as far as an active individual. we'll now deal with the bag he brought him. >> when they deal with the this bomb. >> not -- >> sorry t bag when they detonate. >> the hazardous devices unit has certain procedures that it uses to render a bag safe, to render -- to disrupt something just to make sure that it doesn't pose any harm. doesn't pose any risk. that is what they are going to be using. but there will be a loud bang when that happened.
1:12 pm
>> how much longer will the theater be closed and other areas for how long exactly? >> i don't know. i don't know. obviously there was significant discharge of chemical irritant, chemical spray inside the theater. i don't know what that is at this moment or how long it will take to dissipate or that type of thing. obviously there is also a satchel still inside the place that needs to be addressed. so i can't answer your question to a specific time. >> thank you. well that was a police press conference that you were hearing as well as the fire department in nashville giving an update t on a shooting in a movie theater outside of nashville, tennessee. authorities are now confirmed that the suspect is dead. a 51-year-old white male according to police. there are no fatalities and no major injuries. according to the fire department at least three people were exposed to some kind of irritant or what's been described as pepper spray. one of them also suffered a
1:13 pm
superficial injury, again, possibly from a hatchet wound according to the fire department. joining me on the phone is msnbc law enforcement analyst and retired atf special agent jim kavanagh. great response by the police they were able to contain this. but there still remains an active scene with this possible backpack that that suspect was carrying and now they are trying to contain that and disrupt that according to the police. what can we expect in the coming hours, if you will. what is the bomb disposal team doing right now on that scene. >> they have going to move up to it. they have various methods they can use to disrupt and open the backpack remotely. you know, sound like a shotgun going off. or they can rip it open with the robot arms. they will open it up so they can
1:14 pm
then approach it with their bomb suit and look into and it make sure it is not a bomb. and if it is not a bomb it will be quickly taken care of. if it is it will take a little more time for them to render it safe, as we say. of course there is always a danger when they are disrupting a package, if it really is a bomb, it could detonate as well. and that is why everybody is moved back and the bomb squad does their work. >> and we can see messages of what appears to be a special k-9 unit perhaps to identify other devices that may be on the scene. were you surprised of anything that was not said in that conference? we know the police have an identity of the shooter. they have identified him as the 51-year-old white male. they described him as the local man. and that he may have been spotted elsewhere in the area before he went into that theater. anything from that missing? were you surprised the police did not use the word terrorism
1:15 pm
in describing this? >> no, but they gave us a lot of information there. when the officer said they were spotted in another area and may have encountered other citizens, he may have seemed unusual. maybe his behavior was unusual to some other citizens in the area. so, you know, i think the police spokesman is trying to say this is what we know now. we're trying to sort it together. he's a local man so they are going to be searching his house, his apartment, his vehicle and certainly all his possessions that he bought. and they have to search the cars in the parking lot, ayman because a person could come and also leave stuff in the parking lot that could harm someone. and an aurora shooter, he had his apartment rigged with explosives and a person can drop bombs around a venue like that. that's happened before. >> talk about the time line.
1:16 pm
anything surprising about the fact that he went into this theater about, you know, 1:00 in the afternoon. it is a weekday. it is not particularly packed according to the police. does that shed light on to motivation or why he was there at that time? >> no i don't think so ayman. it is other than theaters are in the national news as places where there are shootings. so we do have sometimes a copy cat effect. and a person may be acting like that. also a theater is where citizens congregate in an enclosed space o. so a person bent on harm to just the public at large or whatever motive can find that at a place where people gather and a theater is one of those. so it will be interesting to see where he was spotted before, what that behavior was like. what comments he made and we may be able to discern some motive later in the day. is it mental illness. is it some kind of internationally inspired
1:17 pm
terrorism motive? the internationally domestic response? is it crime? you know, what could it be. and so -- >> jim, i'm going to ask you to stick with us for a moment. we want to bring in nbc's mark potter who is now at the saep of that shooting. mark, if you could give us an update in terms of what you are seeing. >> reporter: well the area is still saled off and police have warned us that soon we're going to hear an announcement and probably a loud bang when they -- when the bomb squad blows up one of the knapsacks, the backpack that was being carried by the suspect. say said the team looking at that pack was uncomfortable. wouldn't explain why they are not comfortable or uncomfortable. so they are going to use their methods to blow it up safely. and we're expecting to hear
1:18 pm
that. that backpack is in the back of the theater where the suspect himself emerged and was engaged by police and shot dead. and so we're still waiting for that to happen. we're also told that several witnesses, maybe 20, who were in the theater complex at the time are being held in another area nearby to be interviewed by police. one question still unanswered is how many people were in the particular theater where the incident occurred. there may not have been very many people. police said when they got to the scene, three people were running out of theater a man, 58 years old who appeared to have an injury, a superficial injury to his shoulder. also suffering from pepper spray exposure. and two women, a 52-year-old woman and a teenage girl also covered in pepper spray, that apparently had been sprayed by
1:19 pm
the suspect in the theater and the theater was thick with noxious spray when the officers got in there and they had to don gas masks and eventually the shooter went out the back and he was engaged by police and shot dead. there was a moment where a lone officer went into the theater first. the suspect according to police shot at the officer, the officer shot at him. the officer was not injured. and the man went out the back and then was killed. they are making a point here that all of this was contained in one of the theater complexes -- one of the theaters within this complex of eight theaters. and they feel quite lucky that it only stayed in one place, did not spread to other theaters. they are crediting the officer for acting very quickly and bravely. and the officers in this area for moving very quickly to bring this to a head without it spreading. could have been much worse they say but they were able to
1:20 pm
contain it. there were two officers in the area nearby dealing with a traffic accident when a couple of people from the theater actually ran -- or who knew what was going on ran up to them and told them what was happening. about the same time a call came into the police department and very quickly within just moments they were at the theater. so they responded quickly to the incident. and the point made by the fire department is people were tre treated on the scene. no serious injuries. no one was transported and the only casualty is the suspect himself who was shot dead. >> stick with us. we want to bring in -- eugene, thanks for joining us. talk to us about the time line situation right now of trying to piece the identity of who this individual was. now that he has been killed is that going to make it harder for
1:21 pm
police to assess whether he was working alone, whether there was anyone else involved in this and what they have been his motivation, his triggering, for this attack? >> you can be sure that's what concerning them at this point to make sure he east the one and only attacker. there is no accomplice. and also weapons and packages and they are going through the place with a fine toothed comb. and also making sure that people that appear to be theater goers are in fact theater goers. i believe holmes tried to get out as a patron. so you have to be on guard and making sure there are no others involved. >> let's widen the discussion a little bit and we look at some recent movie theater shootings here in the united states. this is the third one. the one in louisiana last month at "train wreck." two were killed in that. nine injured. before the individual, the attacker, committed suicide.
1:22 pm
we also had the incident in colorado in july 2012. 12 killed, 70 injured during the screening of the dark knight rises. is this going to change once again how americans go to the movie theaters? do we need to start looking at these public places differently in the wake of these types of threats and these types of attacks? >> well, it is impossible to protect against every attack. and movie theaters generally would be super safe places. but in in new era that we're living through, caution is warranted no platter where you are in the public place looking for suspicious conduct. if you think something bad is happening trust your instincts. get to a plals ce of safety. don't take anything for granted. cooperate with the police. and of course luckily here the police got here quickly. and the policing in the country has changed of course. in the hold days they were a little more laid back and they responded to these things.
1:23 pm
if there was a way to talk somebody out, they had the way of just threatening violence. but this whole notion of the active shooters the police don't have the luxury and they are very exposed and very at risk having to go into a building they don't necessarily know the inside of. and don't know the contour os of the attack in terms of how many there are, and fortunately it looks like that the officer really did a heroic life-saving thing to go right in there. >> jim are you still with us? >> yeah. >> we learned from police this individual had a ghun with him. he also maybe appeared to have a hatchet or ax of some sort. we also know the police had a presence outside the theater doing something else that allowed them to respond so quickly. but then again the s.w.a.t. team responded and it was only when s.w.a.t. arrived they were able to engage the suspect. are these attacks becoming more elaborate? are they becoming more lethal in the ways that individuals are
1:24 pm
kah iring them out that they require such a response from tactile teams like s.w.a.t.? >> absolutely. it comes on the heels of control. we're seeing this people who are attacking with rifles and explosives. look at james holmes in aurora. look at these guys who attacked this event in garland, texas. they are coming with rifles, it takes officers with rifles like s.w.a.t. or parole officers that are armed with rifles to repel them and stop them. if you are engaged with someone who has a rifle or multiple assailants with rifles and you just have a side arm. you are already losing the gun battle. once in a while if you are a great shot and everything is on your side you can come out. but generally you are already at a deficit. parole knows that. that is why officers carry long guns in their cars and they are responding aggressively like
1:25 pm
eugene set. and they need those weapons and that quick response and they need the numbers in order to knock these killers and active shooters down. unfortunately we're seeing it too much. but that is what it's going to take. we've scene success by quick response of uniformed officers backed up by s.w.a.t. in multiple incidents recently. garland, texas. we saw it in austin texas when a guy was shooting at police headquarters. at dallas when the guy attacked the police headquarters. you saw it today. seeing it in lafayette, louisiana where the parole ran houser back into the theater and he killed himself. so it does take that response and it is showing that it's effective. but nevertheless a person who gets on a bunch of unarmed citizens and he has a rifle and a plan it can turn out awful like we saw in aurora colorado.
1:26 pm
>> let's bring nbc's mark potter back. walk us through what we can expect in the coming hours into the evening. perhaps tomorrow morning. we know a local school was put under lockdown as well as a local mall nearby. >> this theater is in a mall. so yeah the whole mall is locked down and sealed off. there are a lot of other stores around. obviously they are going to first dispatch the backpack. they are going to interview the witnesses to learn more what they can and you as your guests are discussing they are going to try to figure more out about the suspect and his motive. he has been described tentatively as a 51-year-old local man. he is a white male. we don't have a name. the police have not given one to us. they say they are still working

part washed up on the island. it has been confirmed. i think it now gives them more hope as searchers to go out and find other floating type debris. it puts a different mental model to this. this could be sub surface. they are going to be probably scouring the area for pieces that are six to eight feet long and not large chunks of the airplane which they probably were trying to determine or at least use during the course of the initial searches. so i think this kind of debris puts a new mental model, a new mi mind set and determination to search the immediate area. >> and anthony, i want to show your viewers and you as well an animation of where the debris could have drifted in those 16 months. this is an animation you are seeing there. does this mean the debris field now could tend thousands of miles? >> it might mean that. it depends whether or not this
1:45 pm
aircraft actually under went some type of structural failure during its decent or whether it began losing pieces during an attempted water landing or an attempted, quote/unquote crash. so it really depends on what the circumstances were at the time this aircraft is lost. clearly there will be a debris field. that debris field will extend -- could be hundreds, could be thousands of miles. but all of the models show, particularly the latest models, which included not only wind drift but current drift and when they added in the wave action, it brought all of the modelling towards reunion island and its sister islands. so it is very important and i think greg is right on point here, that we begin searching the waters directly around reunion island.
1:46 pm
and following some of that modelling at least 100 to 3, 400 miles out. >> and we'll be watching that very closely. anthony and greg. thank you both. can you spot the difference? the wind farm on the right was created using digital models and real world location-based specs that taught it how to follow the wind. so while the ones on the left are waiting, the ones on the right are pulling power out of thin air. pretty impressive, huh? now, two things that are exactly the same have have never been more different. ge software. get connected. get insights. get optimized.

we are also following the big news in presidential politics at this hour. all eyes are on cleveland as republican candidates arrive in the buckeye state hd ahead of tomorrow night's prime time debate. donald trump said he's hoping for a similar exchange of ideas but if attacked he will hit back. >> i don't to attack anybody. t maybe i'll be attacked and maybe not. i'd rather discuss the issues. if i'm attacked i'd have to do something back but i'd like it to be very civil. >> joining trump in the spotlight but for all the wrong reasons.
1:50 pm
jeb bush who now says he misspoke in nashville yesterday. remarks immediately picked up by hillary clinton. for the latest i'm joined by political reporter at the "new york times," republican strategist and co-founder of. who has a biggest -- take a listen to this. >> i think the harsh language is wrong. i don't think politicians should pray on those fears and that anger and that angst. they should try to lift people up. >> so without rick perry on that stage, do you think we're going to see these two mix it up? >> i think definitely donald trump will be trying to point his finger over to governor jeb bush. and i believe governor jeb bush
1:51 pm
is going try to stay above the fray of all this. but i will tell you there is a tab on his debate binder that says donald trump, in case he attacks go to page five. and there he will have probably a very humorous response or some sort of response back to donald trump. so i think you are going to see for both sides, that it is going to be. i think most will be looking at trump and bush and that exchange in particular. >> you don't think he should engage him? just laugh it off? what approach should he take? >> i think knowing governor bush i believe he will, again, stay above the fray. he will engage if necessary. but i think he will try to attempt to stay focused on the issues and the policies which is something that donald trump will need to respond. >> do you think they could also possible some of the viewers would want to see the governor roll up his sleeves and speak with the kind of candor that has worked for donald trump?
1:52 pm
>> sure. i think that this is what i'm viewing as almost like a reality show for politics. i think you know what we need to be watching for is not only governor bush and him rolling up his sleeves in response to donald trump. i think we'd like to see christie go out and be on the attack. again, these candidates need their memorable moment and it is very critical. that is what's going to make the head lines and that is the only way they are going to be able to somewhat dominate the media. >> today the washington post is reporting on a phone call between bill clinton and donald trump. clinton encouraged trumps efforts to play a larger role in the republican party and even told trump hef was striking a cord with conservatives and a rising force on the right. >> classic. first of all bill clinton was right. >> incredible forsight there.
1:53 pm
>> exactly. and imagine for a guy whoto be could by a two term president and be told to run for president. it's huge. >> let's talk about hill delibera clint quick. the rest of the republican field will no doubt desperately compete to differentiate in style but the truth is they don't differ in substance. do you agree with that? they may have a difference on styles but not necessarily on policy. >> it's hard. i have no idea what donald trump's policies are. i haven't seen a piece of paper or articulate any constructive policy. he may have them but i haven't seen it. so it is hard to know. >> how problematic were jeb's comments on women's health yesterday. no one has more ride oong solid
1:54 pm
performance on tomorrow's debate than jeb bush. do you agree? >> i do. and first of all his comments he again came out right away with a statement saying that we need to be not providing these fundings basically for the community health centers when you are defunding planned parenthood. he came out very clear in his position. afterwards he does something that donald trump doesn't do. which he actually if he makes a mistake, he says it. so i don't think that is going impact because especially looking at the gruesome videos from planned parenthood. to that i think bush's tactic will need to be. he has to be spunky. he's a policy wonk. so for him being able to bring that humorous almost human side to governor jeb bush is going to be ib credibly important. but again they are going to have a short time to really articulate policy positions and a very short time also to come up with those one-liners that stick with those viewers who are watching the debates. >> and let's talk about the under card debate tomorrow.
1:55 pm
is there any chance you see any of those candidates who are going to debate in the earlier hour breaking through from that discussion so that they can be part of the lead pack after the debates? is that even possible? and more importantly what would a candidate have to do to break out? let me bring nick a into that point. >> it's totally impossible. this poll was decided by a few hundred people around the country. it is not a good signifier. there is every opportunity for the under card to make it. >> so it is still a wide open race. >> i think so. >> thank you both for joining us. coming up, more on the breaking news out of tennessee where shots were fired today inside a movie theater outside of nashville.

this hour after the suspected gunman was shot dead. moments ago police detonated a backpack left by the suspect but again at this hour they do say the situation is under control. officials issued an update on how the suspect was brought down. >> ultimately the suspect, who is -- i'm told was wearing a surgical mask, came out of the back door of the theater. metro police officers at the back of the theater at this mad max theater outside engaged him. he has been shot, fatally wounded and pronounced dead here at the scene. he ea he's been tentatively identified as the 51-year-old local man. >> three people were treated from a possible pepper spray.
