8:00 am
his unforgettable impact on politics and pop culture as he gets ready for his final "daily show" tonight. good morning, everyone. i'm tamron hall. developing now as the candidates prepare for tonight's first gop presidential debate republican front-runner donald trump's relationship with the clintons is making headlines this morning. that after details surfaced about a private phone call between trump and former president bill clinton become in may shortly before trump announced his run for the white house. a clinton spokesperson says the former president was returning earlier calls from trump and bill clinton's office tell nbc news -- tells nbc news the presidential race was not discussed. but trump aides tell "the washington post" the former president encouraged trump to quote, play a larger role in the republican party. mother jones' website calls it
8:01 am
quote, the best conspiracy story ever. but first, the final preps for tonight's main event in cleveland, ohio at 9:00 p.m. eastern time under way. that's when the top ten gop candidates will take the main stage. it will be preceded by what's being called the happy hour debate at 5:00 p.m. featuring the seven candidates who did not make the top tier. as for whether the other gop candidates are ready to rumble with trump, rnc chair reince priebus says it's important for the candidates to remember ronald reagan's 11th commandment, thou shalt not speak ill of any republican. >> containment is a key word, too. we have to abide by reagan's 11th commandment and not put up with a lot of mud-slinging and call it out when you see it but let some jabs go by as well. it's a balancing act that we have to let happen without us kind of killing each other at the same time.
8:02 am
>> msnbc political correspondent kasie hunt joins us live now from the site of tonight's debate, the quicken loans arena in cleveland. so all eyes will be there very shortly. let me talk to you about the atmosphere particularly with john kasich being on that main stage, the governor of ohio. >> reporter: john kasich told one of our political reporters that he's being forward to being on stage, he's just happy to be there but it's a big coup for him. it would be tough for the sitting governor of this state not to be on stage. but all the republican party officials, candidate aides, the candidates themselves, they're bumping into each other in the hallways and there's almost this shared sense that no one knows what to do about donald trump and also a shared sense that they're taking him a little bit more seriously than they might have been a couple of weeks ago. the idea that he is a summer fling fading a little bit.
8:03 am
and people starting to actually grapple with this question of whether or not he's still going to be a factor by the time the caucuses begin in iowa by the time voters go to the polls in new hampshire. so in that way, some odd camaraderie among candidates that would otherwise be intense rivals. >> do we know how the night will play out? let's start with the happy hour debate, as it's called. >> reporter: i just spoke recently with senator rick santorum who won iowa last time and yet is rellegated to this happy hour debate because of so many candidates in the field. we'll see that initially. and then we'll have a break before we get to the main event. as we've been talking about now for the past day or two, that is going to feature trump front and center and walker and bush on the sides of him. you mentioned kasich early and chris christie, they'll be out on the wings. but two potential centers of some of the best fireworks
8:04 am
tonight potentially, tamron. >> kasie hunt live for us in cleveland, thank you very much. let's bring in our political panel today, syndicated talk radio host steve dais and jimmy williams and political reporter curtis lee. thank you all for joining us. let me start with this big headline, steve, this morning that there was some conversation between clinton and donald trump where clinton according to the trump team encouraged him to play a more active role in the party. mother jones says conservative heads must be exploding right now. is the trump candidacy just a devious clinton scheme to screw up the republican primaries? you're the conservative on board. what's your take? >> i think all of you are giving the republican party establishment and the democratic party way too much credit. what is hilarious is to see a
8:05 am
republican party establishment who's said to conservatives for decades that we have to abandon everything we believe in order to have a big tent. that they wrote an autopsy that every one of the primetime hosts at msnbc could have written about why the republican party sucks. now all of a sudden their big defense against donald trump is he's not really a republican. he's got friends who are democrats. isn't that what you guys have been telling us we have to do to win all this time? the reality of donald trump is dr. frankenstein always hates the monster he ends up creating. the republican party establishment because of what they've done to their base and their fecklessness and failures and betrayals and lies created donald trump. i think donald trump should go more cowbell. >> speaking of who you support, on that stage, let's start with the top tier. who's your guy on that stage, since the only female in the race is now in the second tier at the happy hour? >> i think what's going to be the side plot is who stands up
8:06 am
as sort of the conservative ideological standard-bearer -- >> who do you expect that to be? >> you have three candidates that are going to try to be that person cruz huckabee and scott walker. one of those three will probably shine as the secondary, i'm going to be the champion of the party platform and why we actually call ourselves republicans in the first place. those are the three on that stage i'd watch for to try and be that conservative standard-bearer tonight. >> curtis let me talk about what you wrote, republicans wonder how you debate donald trump. you heard from steve, the conservative on our panel, regarding building up this frankenstein for lack of a better description and who actually owns him. the bottom line is he owns that stage and he owns the polls right now. how do the other republicans, including the more conservative voices that steve wants to hear from, break through? >> i think that's the big unknown going into tonight. donald trump is obviously leading in a number of poll he's still leading in iowa and new hampshire.
8:07 am
if you're a lower-tier candidate, you don't want to spend your time talking about donald trump. if you're chris christie john kasich, you want to get your platform out there. you want to introduce yourself to voters. this is your first opportunity tonight on a national stage to really get your message out there folks. you don't want to spend too much time talking about donald trump. but if you're one of the higher-tier candidates like jeb bush or scott walker and donald trump attacks you, you have to seem presidential and address whatever he says and then move past it and kind of continue the discussion. it will be key tonight to see what this debate takes on. will it be a civil debate about issues such as immigration and the economy or will it be donald trump attacking his republican challengers? it's really a big unknown. >> it is. jimmy, when you look at for example what reince priebus said regarding ronald reagan, don't speak ill of another republican heed add onto that, as best you can. for example, when rick perry took on donald trump, donald trump tweeted out a picture of them together with what he said
8:08 am
was perry begging for money and then went on to mock rick perry for wearing glasses to appear smart. he is willing to take the low road, all loads if it means he remains at the top of that poll. how do these other republican candidates not speak ill of one another if that trump strategy has been so effective this early? >> look back at the last debates over the last presidential election cycles. that happened. they tore each other apart. rick perry famously not remembering basically anything that he was supposed to remember that he had already rehearsed. i think it's a two-prong strategy. if i were jeb bush or scott walker or anyone else i think i would let donald trump dig his own hole. and secondly i would force him into it and go at him and say things like you declared bankruptcy four times yet you're still a billionaire. why is it you can take other people's money yet remain a billionaire on paper? what are you, just the 1% and go
8:09 am
all populist on him. i think you can do both of those. i don't think reince priebus believes they will not talk ill of each other. it's a debate not a one-man show. >> obviously too many candidates for us to talk about each one. but, steve, i want to highlight jeb bush and what's gone on with him. to two what seemed like missteps with independent voters regarding planned parenthood. that's the latest one. i want to play what yahoo! news had to say about the trouble jeb bush has found. >> fairly or not, the presumption is the perception is as trump gains steam, it's jeb bush who's sort of losing his pre-eminent place in the field. >> jeb bush the person that's been referred to as the dynasty candidate just as hillary clinton has been described, he's anything but that at this point, making mistakes that are stunning, not being able to
8:10 am
explain the difference between him and his brother and his father and then this planned parenthood remark that he tried to clarify, especially at a time when the polling shows the majority of people see planned parenthood as a favorable agency. >> well his gaffe on the planned parenthood thing at a time that we had that issue as pro-lifers is almost an unpardonable sin in politics. he's going nowhere. he's largely a fixture of the liberal media, republican establishment cabal. if the caucuses were today, he wouldn't win any of those early states. i don't know any key activist not a single one anywhere in the country that is backing jeb bush. "the daily beast" had the story yesterday that his big donors are all the same people for hillary as well. ironically the thing that hurts him more than anything is his last name. if he had all the same problems
8:11 am
you just documented and his name were jeb stewart or jeb smith, we'd think he has no shot at all. the only thing keeping him in the race is the most contempt contemptible about him is his last name. >> you also hear people saying that the second-tier debate may be the most substantive. i don't know if that's a way to lick your wounds for some of the candidates to make it appear that's where the knowledge will happen. what's your take of that second tier? >> yeah, absolutely. you have a number of candidates in that forum. it will be carly fiorina and rick perry. and we'll see if they do have a substantive debate. but definitely all eyes will be on the primetime debate. we'll see whether it's a debate of issues or kind of turns into attack mode from donald trump or other republicans. >> jimmy, look into your crystal ball. what's the headline tomorrow? >> headline tomorrow is, how did trump do?
8:12 am
that's all. >> that's not a good headline. >> no, it's not. >> trump trumps or something like that i would have clicked on. thank you, gentlemen. developing now, new details about the man who police say launched an attack on a movie theater, terrifying moviegoers for more than 40 minutes. officials are trying to find out why 29-year-old vincente montano went into a tennessee theater last night armed with a hatchet, pepper spray and a pellet gun. one of the victims who only wants to be identified as steven was hit with the hatchet and spoke out right after the incident about what happened inside that theater. >> i'm eternally grateful -- excuse me -- for metro police department for their fast response today and the fact that no one else got injured other than the person who did this. i'd also like to thank all of the citizens who gathered around
8:13 am
us helped my daughter when we were pepper sprayed. that kind of gives me a little bit more faith in humanity again. i have no idea why this gentleman decided to attack us. >> nbc's mark potter joins us from antioch, tennessee. mark, what is the latest that we've learned on this man's background and what may have led to this attack? >> reporter: that's the big question. we know that he was homeless, that he had an arrest record going back about 11 years. police are trying to figure all that out. this is the theater. it's closed, roped off. there are some officers there. they're inside working on the question of why this happened. but it's a much quieter scene here today than it was yesterday. the big question is motive. why did he go into that theater carrying an ax pepper spray and a pellet gun that he couldn't use to defend himself and start attacking people? police say the one thing they do know is that he had a long history of mental problems, a documented history.
8:14 am
>> shots being fired right now -- >> reporter: this morning, police say this man, 29-year-old vincente montano, bought a ticket to "mad max," entered the hickory hollow theater and carrying an ax, pepper spray and an air soft pistol started terrorizing the people inside. >> this shady looking guy stood up and pulled out like a hatchet and started attacking this family. then he pulled out a gun and we all ran out of the theater. >> reporter: alex roby was in the next theater. >> we took cover in our seats, tried to stay as quiet as possible. we could hear screams, yelling and gunshots coming from the theater. >> be advised, we have shots fired, officer involved 901 bell road. >> reporter: just down the street, two officers were alerted to the danger by citizens and ran to the theater. montano had already grazed one man with his ax and released pepper spray with red dye hitting a woman and a teenage girl.
8:15 am
police say when the officer approached approached, montano raised what appeared to be a real semiautomatic and pulled the trigger. the officer fired at montano and backed out. montano then fled out a back door where a s.w.a.t. team shot and killed him. police later determined montano's gun was an air soft pistol that shoots pellets but looks like a semiautomatic. >> as you look at the gun, if someone confronted you wit, you would think it was a real pistol. >> reporter: police say montano also carried a duffel bag and backpack which had what they described as a hoax explosive device. >> this is maybe what we call the new normal and we can't just shut down america. we carry on. but we need to be very mindful of our surroundings as we do that. >> reporter: as i said before police have said that montano appears to have been homeless. we have indications that he actually registered at a nearby shelter but we don't know if he actually stayed there. this was a couple of days ago. police are also praising the responding officers for moving so quickly to confront the

attacker perhaps reducing the chances that other people could have been hurt or even killed. >> mark potter live for us thank you. developing now, malaysia's prime minister confirms a wing fragment found on reunion island is from missing flight mh-370. but french australian and chinese experts are not ready to make that final declaration. family members of those who died are outraged over this latest confusion. a live report is next. and bill cosby will be questioned under oath about sexual molestation allegations for the first time in nearly ten years. it is one of the stories we are updating around the "news nation." you can join the conversation online, find the team on twitter and find me on facebook, twitter and instagram.

>> this has rocked the campaign. jesse benton is as tied to rand paul and ron paul as almost anyone. and the fact he's facing indictment over this for a campaign that was already struggling this is a psychological blow to the campaign. >> and the president's speech on iran yesterday, saying basically the option is this deal or some type of war which was the quote that he had there. i would imagine that these candidates today will be put on the spot to say what they then would offer up. >> yeah, the most fascinateing question will be -- a lot of republicans have answered this. but i wouldn't be surprised if they get this again. if you're president, what would you do on day one with the iran deal? scott walker and other republicans have said they'd rip it up on day one. some of the practical realities of how that would be perceived by america's allies as well as the international community would be put pressure against such a move. it will be fascinating to see the answers they give on that

on high after changing the landscape of the late-night tv and having a tremendous impact on daily discourse. joining me now, james. you had a great essay on this. you talk about what you'll miss most about jon stewart. you say, i will miss him as a media filter not in the usual sense of someone who takes in a great deal of news scans over it and highlights the bits most worthy of your attention. go on to explain what filter you meant. >> i mean like a filter like something on a sewage treatment plant or in your bloodstream that basically absorbs a torrent of toxins and passes them through in a form that you can safely tolerate. in the american body politics jon stewart was our liver. >> i think that's the first time he's been described that way.
8:46 am
>> i'm sure it is. not chopped liver. >> i got it. what's interesting as well is that here was this man who's clearly intelligent, an intellectual thoughtful person but was also hip and was able to draw in as we hear over and over this great number of young people who as we again, have heard over and over, got their news from jon stewart. >> yeah. and in that sense, he was also a media filter in that sense of the word. he sort of ushered in a time when people were increasingly turning to nontraditional sources for their news. and i think that younger viewers embraced him partly because he took the news seriously. he was funny about it. but in a way where the comedy came from, engaging with the ideas in-depth and not necessarily pretending to be sort of neutral or above it all but sort of calling b.s. when he

felt it was necessity. and his authenticity came from that, i think. >> two examples of what you were referring to from his ability to take the serious news and be very authentic with it you reference it in your post the 9/11 moment the day that he returned after the nation was just broken apart, let's play the clip from the show that day. >> we've had an unenduring pain here, unendurable pain. and i wanted to tell you why i grieve but why i don't despair. i'm sorry. >> when you look at that how many people could handle that moment in the way he did and keep the show on track and rebuild it to the nature that it is now? >> yeah, the"the daily show" was a, quote, unquote, fake news show.
8:48 am
but one advantage that it had and that he had is that the traditional idea of the news television news mainstream news is you remove yourself from the newscast. that was just a person engaging with what had happened on an intelligent but honest level. and, again, i think that that sort of forged this connection that gave him an authority that traditional authorities didn't necessarily have as much anymore. >> and perhaps don't still have. interesting to see what will happen tonight, the presidential debate, his last show. it will be taped before the debate which is -- i don't know if he's going to go on per periscope and do a live post show of the gop debate. but it will be sorely missing. >> it's as if god is taunting him. >> i think it will be on periscope, something live. he's got to. thank you so much, great
