s it mond . it is monday, august 10th. shots fired in ferguson, on the one-year anniversary. outspoken and controversial comments. nfl legend has passed. nfl legend and broadcaster frank gifford has died. "first look" starts right now. good monday morning to you, everybody. thanks for joining us today. i'm betty nguyen. ferguson, missouri, multiple shots were fired during a protest overnight. sunday marked the first anniversary of the death of michael brown, unarmed teen shot and killed by a white police officer.

according to st. louis county police, four officers are on administrative leave after coming under heavy fire. one suspect was taken to the hospital. st. louis police held a news conference not long ago. >> this is a tragedy for the family of this man and certainly for the officers involved. and it is truly a tragedy. there is a small group of people out there that are intent on making sure that we don't have peace that prevails. i don't know how else to say that. but that's just the bottom line on this. and that's unfortunate. >> the st. louis police department tweeted out this photo of a bullet hole in the windshield of a vehicle two. unmarked cars took shots, according to police. jay gray is live in ferguson for us this morning. what more can you tell us about the shooting? >> reporter: yeah, betty. unrest a year after michael brown was shot and killed by police, another police shooting happened just before midnight

and just behind a line of police in riot gear watching over a small group of protesters. 40 to 50 shots fired between two groups. one of the men involved peeled off and turned his weapon on those plain-clothes detectives, fired on their vehicles. and that's when they returned fire. the suspect hit. he is in critical, unstable condition. and in surgery right now here. tensions remain high, as you would expect. police say they are very concerned about the potential for more violence here. >> a lot of emotions, i get it. but this is something different. we can't sustain this as a community as we move forward. we have other individuals out there who are armed right now, part of this group. we need the public's help. we can't do it by ourselves. we have to have the community out here, helping us, working with us to identify this and to make this stop. >> reporter: we are learning more from police about the

weapon that they say they retrieved from this gunman. they say it was a stolen 9 millimeter pistol. they say the stakes are very high here and these aren't protesters causing this problem. they call them criminals. also tonight two businesses were burglarized here and one officer treated after he was hit in the face from a brick thrown from the crowd. that's the latest in ferguson. back to you. >> lot of development there is. jay, thank you so much for that. days after the high-profile gop debate donald trump once again is stirring controversy, refusing to apologize for comments he made about moderator emegaemg -- megaem megyn kelly. >> reporter: it leaves him on very familiar ground, on

custody after firing a gun when officers entered. they discovered he had an outstanding warrant for aggravated assault. the motives appear to be related to a dispute with conley's former domestic partner. e.p.a. is coming under fire for causing a toxic spill in colorado. 3 million gallons of waste water containing traces of lead and arsenic have spilled into the animas river. gold mine, causing water inside it to spill into the river. the waste stretches into new mexico, 100 miles from where it started. residents are, understandably, upset. >> makes me want to cry. it's a huge disaster. >> reporter: >> e.p.a. official claims no environmental harm so far. but residents in the area who get their drinking water from

good morning. we are looking at storm this is morning through parts of the tennessee valley. a pretty big cell is moving south of paducah carrying winds 60 miles an hour. storms will fire up through the ohio valley and tennessee valley, but we're not looking for major severe weather. basically some flash flooding and gusty winds. the big story today will continue to be the heat that we're seeing from the south. really, all the way down through the gulf. look at these actual air temperatures, 105 in dallas for the expected high. 102. heat indices will get as high as 115. yeah, this heat wave is continuing. not only today, but into tomorrow, too. we'll see the heat start to ease by about wednesday to the south. but still pretty hot. parts of louisiana, betty, they've seen temperatures over 100 degrees over -- yeah, close to 100 degrees 14 times this

year. it's been brutal. >> domenica, thank you. stories making news this morning, families of the two teenage boys missing from jupiter, florida, ended their privately led search on saturday. the boys were reported missing when they didn't return from a fishing trip july 24th. through a family spokesperson they said, in part, we love our boys and want them home. today our hope becomes our prayers that one day perry and austin will be returned to us. coast guard officially suspended their search july 31st. in los angeles, police chase this had car that was missing a tire for 70 miles over several freeways. the pursuit finally ended when the axle wore down, bringing the car to a halt. it all began after a report of a dui driver. that driver surrendered to police soon afterward. two teenagers in california were struck by lightning, knocking them to the ground.
