2:30 out west. this is "way too early", the show that keeps going no matter the disruption. good morning, everyone. it's monday, august 10th. i'm ayman mohyeldin. we begin with breaking news in ferguson, missouri, demonstrations to mark one year since michael brown's death turned violent. rolling when gun shots rang out. >> this is a good area to be in. step over here. [ gunshots ] >> fighting. there's like a million shots going off. >> we've got to go. >> we've got to go.

>> anybody hit? >> we're okay. >> everybody all right right here? >> we're okay. >> did you hear what happened? >> we just heard a lot of shots. a lot of gun shots. >> people running. >> and we just ran back here immediately. so, they were from over in that direction. >> people were running before the shots were fired. so, it wasn't even just that. >> how many shots do you think you heard? >> oh, [ bleep ]! >> a ton. >> 15 to 20 and that's probably on the low end. >> one man is in critical condition, shot by officers multiple times after officials say he opened fire on an unmarked police vehicle. the department tweeted out photos showing at least two police cars with bullet holes. plenty of other tense moments. at one point, officers deployed tear gas to break up crowds. assaulted and robbed in a nearby

parking lot and had to be hospitalized. jay gray joins us live from ferguson. what more are police saying about this shooting involving their officers this morning? >> reporter: let's start, ayman, about the fact that they are very concerned about the potential for more vils here, saying this is a small group of individuals armed and intent on making sure peace does not prevail here. this happened just after midnight and just behind the line of police officers watching over a small group of peaceful protesters, police stress iing protesters are not causing these problems. they are, in their words, criminals. they talked about how the shootout unfolded. let's listen. >> the suspect engages them with gunfire almost right at the grill of the car, strike the hood. i don't know if you've seen pictures of it yet, three or four times. strike the windshield four or five times. plain clothes detectives return fire from the inside of the van but they don't know if they hit

him or not. they don't really know. the suspect ran to the east on the north side of that building. he turned back around as the detectives got out of the car. shots were fired again. he ran around, behind the building out of the south. that's a fenced area back there. there was really nowhere to go at that point. he engaged the fors at the time. there were four officers in that van. all four fired at the suspect and the suspect fell there. this is a tragedy for the family of this man and certainly for the officers involved. s it truly a tragedy. there is a small group of people out there that are intent on making sure that we don't have peace that prevails. i don't know how else to say that. but that's just the bottom line on this. and that's unfortunate. >> and police asking for help from the public, if they have

any video of this small group, as they describe them, if they know of these people who are armed. they are, again, concerned about more violence here. tension very high at this point. two businesses were burglarized overnight. one police officer treated after he was hit in the face with a brick. officers saying that a lot of debris, a lot of things were thrown at them throughout the night. that's the latest as things continue to unfold here. back to you, ayman. >> jay gray, thank you very much for that. memorials to michael brown largely have been peaceful during the day. hundreds of people took part in a 4 1/2 minutes of silent symbolic of the time his body was left in the street one year ago. michael brown's father also addressed the crowd. >> biggest question always asked to me is how i feel. i think that's just the dumbest question you could ever ask me. how about how is your day?

how is this moment? i just don't get it, you know. people just aren't considerate, man. just want to give all my love to my family, my friends, my people, my new friends, my world. they are my world. y'all made this happen. >> michael brown was unarmed when he was shot and kill bid officer darren wilson after a confrontation on the street. grand jury declined to bring charges against the officer and federal officials concluded there was no evidence to disprove his testimony that he feared for his life. several high-ranking officials also lost their jobs, including the police chief. authorities in arlington, texas, are now asking for the fbi's help into the investigation of a fatal shooting of an unarmed african-american college student. christian taylor is shown before the fatal encounter at a car

dealership after police got a burglary call. >> reporter: moments before 19-year-old christian taylor was shot and killed by police, a security company was watching his every move. surveillance video shows taylor being tracked through an recallington, texas, car dealership, climbing on cars and at one point jumping on a hood, ripping out a windshield. >> looks like the suspect is trying to get into the vehicle through a windshield. >> reporter: eventually he gets back in his own jeep and rams it through a secured gate and drives into the showroom window. police say there is no video from inside but you can see officers calmly approach. the police chief says officers order taylor to get on the ground but say he tried to escape through a back door. >> during this arrest there was a confrontation between officers and mr. taylor, which led officer brad miller to discharge his weapon. >> reporter: police say 49-year-old officer brad miller

fired four rounds. miller had just graduated from the police academy in march and was being supervised by a training officer. the training officer fired his taser. >> if this was not justified or authorized under the law, there will be consequences. >> reporter: taylor's family says whatever the circumstances, he didn't deserve to die. >> whoa all make mistakes. we have to learn. he didn't get a chance to learn. his life was over. >> reporter: this as "the washington post" puts this in perspective nationwide, reporting that 585 people have been killed by police so far this year, 24 of them black and unarmed. arlington's chief says he recognizes the concerns. >> this instance has not occurred in isolation but rather it has occurred as our nation has been wrestling with the topics of social injustice, inequities, racism and police misconduct. >> reporter: the chief pledging transparency, even asking the fbi to help investigate in the

wake of yet another controversial shooting. >> officer miller has been put on administrative leave and has not yet given a statement to investigators per police protocol. out west bernie sanders west coast tour got off to a rocky start. he never got to deliver a speech at a rally on social security and medicare. as he took to the stage, he was interrupted by protesters shouting "black lives matter." >> among other things -- among other things, i wanted to talk about the issues of black lives, of the fact that the american people are tired of seeing unarmed african-americans shot and killed. but there are other issues as well that we have to talk about. >> sanders' campaign continues to draw massive crowds. reported 15,000 people showed up

at his next event on campus. a reported 28,000 people showed up to the home of the portland trailblazers. donald trump's ability to make waves across the political landscape shows no end after holding center stage in the most watched debate in history. trump's interview antics created a new storm, taking issue with pointed and personal questions from fox news moderators, trump said this friday night. >> certainly i don't have a lot of respect for megyn kelly. she's a lightweight and came out there reading her little script and trying to, you know, be tough and be sharp. and when you meet her, you realize she's not very tough and she's not very sharp. she's a dippo. she starts asking me all sorts of ridiculous questions. you could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood

coming out of her wherever. but she was -- in my opinion, she was off base. >> now the comment which many interpreted as calling kelly hormonal drew fierce reaction. conservative blog rescinded their offer for trump to speak at their gathering of top republican candidates in atlanta. >> if you haven't heard, i disinvited donald trump. [ applause ] >> i've got my wife here. i've got my daughter here. i've got 800 friends of mine here. it's a family-friendly program. if he's not going to clarify that this isn't what he meant, i don't think i want him at my event. >> trump's campaign responded by calling erick erickson weak and pathetic. trump said you could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever writing "nose" in

injured including police officers. there is no immediate claim for the attack. senat senator chuck schumer's future could be in jeopardy. schumer's camp believes that the white house leaked that he was going to vote against the deal. he says the senator asked president obama to keep it quiet until friday. white house press secretary josh earnest refused to say that democrats should still support schumer as harry reid's successor. >> this is a question for democratic senators and a vote they will cast in early 2017. i certainly wouldn't be surprised if there are individual members of the senate democratic caucus that will consider the voting record of those who say they would like to lead the caucus.

>> senator claire mccaskill says his opposition will not sway her or any other democrat who is still undecided. >> i don't think either of us feel pressure, either by chuck schumer's rejection of this deal or president obama's full throttle support of this deal. we're doing our homework. on 60 days to review this deal, it appeared to me most of them made their mind up in about five minutes. this is one where the heightened rhetoric on both sides is not always helpful. and i hope that more senators keep their blinders on, do their homework and figure out which way do we secure israel and secure our country. >> now to some sad news from the sports world. nfl hall of famer and veteran broadcaster frank gifford passed away at his home sunday in connecticut. entering the nfl first round pick of the new york giants, played in eight pro bowls and

received honors for mvp in 1956. gifford continued as a major voice as a commentator in the monday night football booth. he was 84 years old. the 53rd class of the nfl hall of fame was immortalized saturday night. after questions whether the pro football hall of fame would let her speak at the reception, sydney seau was able to speak at the induction. >> i would love to see nothing more than to see you come on stage and tell me you love me one more time. that isn't a reality i know his athleticism and talent made it extraordinary enough to make him into the hall. his passion and heart make him truly legendary and deserving of this tremendous honor. i would like to thank my family and everyone else for all their support through this process. dad, i love you and miss you.
