inequality, when you have unfairness, it is not dee vie sieve not to talk about it but to talk about it. if there is a racial divide in the criminal justice system, in the economy, to leave it divided is divisive. to bring it together, is where you solve problems. thanks for watching. i'm al sharpton. "hardball" starts right now. donald trump three strikes but not out. let's play "hardball." good evening i'm steve. he accused rapist coming into the united states and went after john mccain says he likes people who weren't captured and this
4:01 pm
weekend attacked megyn kelly for what he deemed a nasty question at the debate. late on friday, trump had this to say about kelly. >> she gets out and she starts asking me all sorts of ridiculous questions. you can see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever. >> those comments were interpreted by many to be referring to kelly's menstrual cycle. trump said only a quote def yant would think that's what he meant. >> in discussinglati later, i s she was so angry, blood was coming out of her eyes, blood was coming out of her and i didn't finish the answer because i wanted to get onto the next point but i was referring to or if i finished i would say ears or nose because that's a common statement. >> trump continued attacking kelly tweeting out a link today to an interview kelly did with
4:02 pm
howard stern in 2010 that included sexual questions. trump said oh, really, check out innocent megyn kelly's discussion on howard stern's show five years ago. i'm the innocent pure one. "morning joe" today trump said he's the one owed an apology. >> the fact is she asked me a very inappropriate question. she should be apologizing to me if you want to know the truth and other candidates said that. >> trump's attack on megyn kelly is criticized by many of his republican opponents for the white house. this afternoon hillary clinton said the republican party is going to have to deal with trump. >> i said it was offensive. i was said it was outrageous. i stand by that. i think more people should say the same and should be going after him, the republican party will have to deal with him. >> hilary was asked about trump's charge last week that she showed up at his wedding because she had no choice. trump said he donated to the clinton foundation and said be at my wedding. here is hilary this afternoon.
4:03 pm
>> it's all entertainment. you know, i mean, i think he's having the time of his life, you know, being up on that stage, saying whatever he wants to say, getting people excited for and against him. >> are you seeing a side of him that you didn't see before? >> i didn't know him that well. i knew him. i knew him and i happened to be planning to be in florida and i thought it would be fun to go to his wedding because it's always entertaining. now that he's running for president, it's a little more troubling. >> joined my katy tour, jonathan capehart. katy, in politics, what we're used to seeing is when a candidate says anything, hail rains down upon them and gets a new crowd, starts apologizing and blushes a bit. we're not seeing any of that from donald trump.
4:04 pm
is that because donald trump thinks he can talk his way out of this. >> donald trump is not a politician and so far talked his way out of it. after the mccain comments, he pivoted to giving out lindsey graham's phone number and everybody was talking about that. he's been successful at refusing to apologize and just barrelling through all the controversy and that's what he's doing again right now. it will be interesting to see if he's going to be able to maintain his level of support. i personally think he will. i think those that want to support him are going to continue to support him. they believe that these comments were fair game. he keeps saying the media is out to get him, that the media is attacking him and they are people who believe that's true. so megyn kelly is just following into that corner of just another media personality whose going after the poor innocent donald trump. those who don't like him on the other hand find these comments particularly offensive and coming out and screaming about this and getting very angry about it but donald trump is not
4:05 pm
a politician. donald trump made a career out of being outrageous, made a career out of to thing himself as the best and most important and smartest person in the room. if you look at his website, he has nothing about policy issues, no issues page whatsoever. instead, it's to thing how he's a great businessman and emmy nominate for the hosting of "the apprentice". >> the fact that this is fox news, this is a fox news personality trump is going after is a big part of the story as well and today trump tweeted out that roger ails just called and he's a great guy and assures me that trump will be treated fairly on fox news. his word is always good and meanwhile, fox news host steve tweeted that trump will appear on the network tomorrow to discuss his relationship with the channel. jonathan, this dynamic is interesting to me because the one piece of conventional wisdom is you can't run in the modern era for the republican
4:06 pm
nomination and be at war with fox news. trump is at war with fox news. this isn't going to last but we find out he may go back on the network and may have had a friendly phone call today and the controversy with megyn kelly and comments about blood is barely mentioned on fox news the last few days. >> uh-huh, uh-huh, yeah. so it's interesting he had that conversation with roger ails because they both need each other. i mean, donald trump is big with the fox news audience. and he needs the fox news channel to get his message out but folks voting in the primaries are watching fox. what i find interesting, steve, we heard a lot from donald trump since friday. we heard nothing from megyn kelly. i'll be curious to see if she says anything tonight on her
4:07 pm
show about this entire controversy, whether she has a personal response or her show addresses it. i have no idea what she would say but it's clear when it comes to thick skin versus thin skin, you have to have a thick skin if you run for president and donald trump with his constant thrashing out against enemies calling them losers and zippo and low in the ratings and dumb and stupid, he has incredibly thin skin. >> a new survey in the wake of last week's republican debate shows trump maintaining a strong lead. he's at 23% among republicans that is ten points higher than his closest competitor who is now ted cruz in the survey. trump holds a strong lead in an online survey also taken since the debate and meanwhile, a new ppp poll from iowa shows trump leading the field among
4:08 pm
republicans there. jonathan, again, we've seen this movie before. we saw it after the john mccain comments. this is going to be the end of him. all republican haves an excuse to pile on donald trump. watch the poll numbers collapse. this is still a little bit early but we have three bits of evidence in these polls that are coming out today that at least in the immediate aftermath of this debate, donald trump did not go down at all. >> we see a solid base of support for him and the people that support him are anti any establishment. somebody gets in a fight with anybody perceived to be the establishment whether the media or another candidate reinforces their belief in him. you know, on the megyn kelly issue, it will be interesting to watch her show as jonathan was saying and see what she says tonight. if donald trump behaved this way, we could call that harassment and it's got to be a point that it's particularly ugly and i can only say that i have tremendous respect for her for not engaging in it. >> here is my question with this
4:09 pm
fox news trump relationship. who is more scared of who here? typically the republican candidate would be terrified but trump is saying hey, look, you're fox. you shattered existing records for audience for a debate. you got a rating that nobody could believe. 25 million people watching your debate and you only got that rating because of me. >> yeah, i mean, he talks about his ratings the way that some people talk about their wives or, you know, talk -- it's interesting to watch. jonathan was talking about thin skin and thick skin. this is a thin skin guy who is very sensitive to his standing and has a pretty big ego and to support that, he talks. he did the ratings and my guess is megyn kelly's show tonight will be highly rated, as well. jonathan is right. they need each other. i think it makes sense they will come back towards each other. the republican party should be worried because if fox news is in the trump camp, that is
4:10 pm
problematic. >> trump's swipe at megyn kelly drew strong criticism from opponents in the republican race. >> come on. [ applause ] >> give me a break. i mean, are we -- do we want to win? do we want to insult 53% of all voters? what donald trump said is wrong. that is not how we win elections and worse yet, that is not how you bring people together to solve problems. >> i think it's cowardly to share those kinds of demeaning insulting comments. >> they were completely inappropriate and offensive comments, period. >> and trump struck back tweeting i just realized if you listen to carly for more than ten minutes straight you get a massive headache. she does not stand a chance. she was in the second tier kids' table debate. she was declared the winner by more republicans but katy turr,
4:11 pm
we've seen jeb bush talking about how inappropriate trump's comments are and how wrong the tone is and how self-destructive to have somebody out there saying these things. it has not budged his number. what will it take for a candidate to breakthrough the message? >> i don't know. again, if you like trump, you'll continue to like him. he's appealing to the outsider base but i don't think that he's going to be able to maintain a lead in the polls and get the nomination unless he starts to branch out. in order to branch out, he needs to show substance behind all the tough talk. he's going to talk, need to talk about how that wall is going to be paid for. how it will be built. his immigration stance. how he feels about health care. more than just we need to repeal obamacare. but we have, you know, four, five, six months to go before the first primaries and caucuses and got some time to do that.
4:12 pm
right now he's sucking the air out of the room and continuing to get the headlines with these outrageous statements and continuing to lead in the polls. i think it's just one of the things we're going to have to wait and see as it goes along, but he's going to need to at some point start making a broader appeal to the republicans. >> well, yeah, jonathan that's one of the things i'm trying to figure out looking at the polls. we show him 23, 25, 26% in first place but been in the low mid 20s and i'm trying to figure out does that mean the other part of the party is hardening in opposition to him? is he at 25% because there is 16 other candidates. is he still going to be at 25% or is there room for him to grow this? >> there is room for him to grow this and that's assuming if senator ted cruz gets out of the race before trump does that assumes that ben carson gets out of the race before trump does, that assumes that mike huckabee gets out of the race before
4:13 pm
trump does. there are people, this is one of the reasons why ted cruz will not criticize donald trump. cruz is counting on trump to get out of the race sooner rather than later but definitely before he does and cruz wants to be the beneficiary of those trump supporters. so, you know, the other thing about donald trump's numbers and why his numbers and what i find so concerns that why he keeps rising in the polls, he's not rising in the polls because of a position on, say, like a fair tax or as katy pointed out, alternative to obamacare or a strong stance on foreign policy. each time he's risen in the polls because he's done some, tempted into quote the anger of the electret. mexicans coming over and they are rapist. john mccain isn't a war hero because he got captured and the thing i found most offensive about the debate is not the
4:14 pm
interaction back and forth between megyn kelly and donald trump, it had to do with the fact he called out by name rosey o'donald after a list of really derogatory words. he trashes veterans. he trashes immigrants. he trashes women and his poll numbers keep going up. he's tapping into anger but it's a hate-filled anger and that's a problem for the republican party and country. >> the other piece, you look at other politicians, other candidates, other people with official titles before their name calling him out on this, one thing that may animate supporters is they hear that krit sis sk criticism and see it's coming from politicians, you know, go screw yourselves, that's the mess they are sending by saying they support trump. thank you-all and coming up, jeb bush says donald trump is costing the republican party women voters. lindsey graham says he's inflicting fatal damage and urging the 2016 field to stand up to him.
4:15 pm
we'll look at the damage donald trump is doing to the gop's 2016 chances. that is next and later, can donald trump seriously be running for president when he doesn't have a single subtantive policy position on issues? plus, tenses are high in ferguson, missouri one year after the shooting death of michael brown, the city erupts in violence again. the white house is at war with chuck schumer over the nuclear deal with iran. president obama is pushing hard for that deal but schumer, the in coming senate democratic leader is against it. this is "hardball" a place for politics. jublia is a prescription medicine proven to treat toenail fungus. use jublia as instructed by your doctor. look at the footwork! most common side effects include ingrown toenail, application site redness, itching, swelling, burning or stinging, blisters, and pain. smash it! make the call and ask your doctor if jublia is right for you.

yesterday land paul wrote an editorial when he said trump has no place in the party. quote, it sounds too much like he's someone used to bullying to get his way. what do you do to a bully? stand up to him. if he's willing to possibly give the election to hilary, he shouldn't be on that stage, that should be the first and uniting principle. we don't need a bully and we don't need another president who thinks he is king. senator lindsey graham told the "washington post" the party needs to intervene. quote, just like driving by a car wreck without rendering aid. trump is a car out of control and somebody needs to get him out of the car. i don't see a pathway for 2016 to win the white house if we don't de-icetibesiddecisively d. we're at a cross roads at a party. joined by republican strategist with the santorum campaign and

katy packer gauge. john, let me start with you because you got a dog in this fight, so to speak. you guy haves to deal with this issue other candidate whose are out there not named donald trump have to deal with and i wonder if you take lessons from lindsey graham. lindsey graham is one of the worst critics of trump in the republican field. trump is saying look, he didn't get any traction out of that and kept in the main debate. land palm, the early polling evidence we've seen since the debate shows rand paul is dropping. he stood up to donald trump and stood up to the guy he calls the bully in the debate and dropped it appears since the debate. is there a lesson for candidates what happens when you go after trump right now? >> we're helping hillary clinton and writing ads for them by our behavior, people are willing to be adults in the room and say quit it, stop it now. no more of this. and whether it's the party, i think it could also be the other candidates, i know a number of

candidates you had mentioned one, rick santorum and others have come out and said enough is enough. we have to stop this and get focused on beating hillary clinton instead of beating ourselves and called for an end to the personal attacks. it's got to stop. it's got to stop now. >> you say it's got to stop. which way? it looked like in that debate, trump on thursday night trump took a step back and had the chance to repeat stuff he said about jeb bush. all he would say is i have a lot of respect for jeb bush or something along those lines. besides the megyn kelly incident, he wasn't going african daafter those candidates. >> he's also attacking a lot of other people. the problem is he's taking time away from other candidates who have things to say. i'm not just talking to trump. chris christie rand paul exchange was probably not real helpful, either. you have katy on. her candidate last time, mitt romney and rick santorum did 20 debates together and massive

4:24 pm
be involved in a debate. trump is a legitimate candidate that has support from a corner, small corner of the republican party and he has a right to be there. it's the job of the other candidates to put a message forward that won't start to overshadow that and that will happen. trump is sort of capped out of the 20% area. his support hasn't grown since the debate. you know, some other candidates are diminished, i don't think because they tangled with trump but because other candidates stepped into the spotlight and have soaked up some of the spotlight. you've seen ben carson and carly step up and that's come from somewhere. i don't think trump took support from anybody else. his support is stagnant but there is a core of people that will stick with him no matter how obnoxious and bullying he is but not enough to win the republican name noiomination. >> interesting point. you say he hasn't broken past 20, 25%. none of the others have gotten close to that.
4:25 pm
he's ahead of anybody else individually and some look at the polls and see ted cruz there in second place or ben carson in third place and they would say look at the sort of extreme rhetoric that ted cruz put out or ben carson. what is to say those voters wouldn't turn to donald trump if they i don't have those options? >> i think we see that. they asked question who would your second choice be and the reality is the more reasonable voters within the party are divided among 16, 15 candidates and so of course, it's largely d diffused. at some point it will come down the a couple candidates and trump won't get a majority of republican voters at the end. we're spending an awful lot of time talking about a guy that will not be the republican nomine and to john's point, we're missing opportunities to talk about hillary clinton and some real problems she has to confront. >> john, what's your advise to the candidate. you're watch thing guy take
4:26 pm
control of the debate and saying things about megyn kelly and others. what's your advice to the candidate? >> first of all, any candidates, my client or anybody else, first of all, focus on your race. i mean, a year ago or i'm sorry, four years ago, the main characters at this point high in the polls were tim pawlenty, herman cane, michele bachmann and mitt romney. romney made it past iowa and further, obviously and became the nominee. two of those didn't get to iowa and one didn't get past iowa. it's extremely fluid. the other thing i would say, stop fearing donald trump and discuss with him on issues. i hear nobody debating about his ridiculous answer on health care last week and we should be engaging him more on issues and less on the sort of entertainment sides. >> all right. john, katy, appreciate you both joining us. up next, we'll go to ferguson, missouri where violence broke outen the anniversary of michael brown's death. this is "hardball" a place for politics.

4:33 pm
at most against maybe 100 to 200 people there peacefully, the small number of people, 15 people, once they have an agenda for violence, i saw people just start shooting. i doesn't see the gunshots but really what i heard is i really heard the gunshots. i really saw a terrified scene. i've never seen police officers running behind vehicles telling everybody to duck down. they are usually giving people advice, get out of the street but in this case, really everyone was terrified and the last end of that video i really heard one of the protesters telling me, you need to get out of the way because after awhile, i didn't really realize the gunshots were just feet away from me. so really, what i saw was just almost chaos after those gunshots were heard and it was a long period of time. felt like 50 gunshots feels like forever. i feel like i ducked down and heard gunshots and let me see what to report and low and behold, more gunshots.
