tv   Andrea Mitchell Reports  MSNBC  August 13, 2015 9:00am-10:01am PDT

9:00 am
hundreds are injured after a massive explosion in one of china's largest cities. >> the first conversation that we had was that the firefighters and the first responders had all been knocked over and there were -- there are dead bodies all over the street. and new neighbors as cuba prepares to welcome the u.s. back to havana, residents aren't quite sure what to expect. >> i feel mostly skeptical about these changes. but i think that always with a silver lining. >> everybody is expecting for some -- something that actually will know what is coming but something is coming. good day, everyone. i'm andrea mitchell in new york. for the next nine days more than a dozen presidential candidates are going or a i've at the iowa
9:01 am
state fair facing two realities, the surprising republican front-runner seems to be here to stay. and the consensus democratic front-runner looks more vulnerable by the day. chuck todd is nbc news political director and moderate offer of "meet the press." what is your assessment of the latest polling on donald trump? >> look at the top half of the poll. what we've seen since this debate is all the movement has been with the outsider candidates. it's not just trump holding steady. carson has moved up. fiorina has moved up. cruz has moved up a little bit. they're all sort of trying to be that non-washington person, the non-establishment person, the outsider message, in particular obviously with fiorina, carson, and trurmp, none of them have electoral experience. when you look at that and you realize that all the movement is
9:02 am
there, then it tells you that while we focus on trump, what he's tapped in to, the anti-politician movement in the republican party might be as big as 40% of the party right now. >> and when you also look at the poll, what was really interesting is when you ask people about donald trump what do they like, what are the issues, it's about everything. they like the fact that they think among the iowa caucus goers, they talk about the fact that trump leads on the economy, on illegal immigration, on terrorism, on changing washington, and on the best chance to win in 2016. he's projecting strength, he's projecting that outsider, you know, anti-washington spirit. and that's what they're reacting to because he certainly hasn't talked about all of those issues. >> by the way, iowa, democratic caucus goers, they fall in love with candidates like this a lot. you know, it is not uncommon for iowans on either side of the aisle to end up picking one of these candidates that is all,
9:03 am
you know, sort of all representing of maybe it's a protest movement, some sort of vehicle, some sort -- if going back, i think whether you're talking about jimmy carter coming out of nowhere or pat robertson being a surprise second place finisher back in the day or now trump. so this isn't an unusual position for iowa caucus goers to find themselves? >> i wanted to ask show you the rand paul ad. he's certainly taking trump seriously. take a look at this. >> if you go back and when it just seems that the economy does better under the democrats -- >> health care. >> liberal on health care. we have to take care of people that are sick. >> universal health coverage? >> i love universal. hillary clinton is a terrific wop. i'm biased because i've then her for years. i live in new york. she lives in new york. i've known her and her husband for years and i really like them both a lot. i think she works hard and i think she does a good job. i like her. she's a really good person. >> and this is donald trump's
9:04 am
reaction to rand paul. >> ronald reagan, as an example, was a democrat with a liberal bent who became a conservative republican. recently rand paul called me and asked me to play golf. i easily beat him on the golf course and will even more easily beat him now in the world in the politics. rand's campaign is a total mess. as a matter of fact, i didn't know he had anybody left in his campaign to make commercial who are not currently under indictment. so take that. rand paul though is not -- rand paul has sort of lost that outsider status to trump in this campaign. >> absolutely. and this is why trump has been effective so far in beating back attacks that have come at him from republicans. because he literally is able to say, geez, you know, you wanted me to go golfing with you, which also is code for, you were trying to raise money for me. you know, he did the same thing with scott walker. you're criticizing me?
9:05 am
you were just in my office giving me an award. and indeed walker sort of did give him like all big donors to his campaign got something like having to do with his 2014 re-elect. this is the part where when these guys come after trump, trump sort of kills them with, well, remember that time you k asked money from me or remember that time you were looking for support from me? and i think that's what makes it -- has put all of these guys in a box a little bit. trump is not wrong. perry and graham look after him and look where they are right now. paul is i think is in a mode of oh we some might call it desperation. i don't know if he comes out on the good side of this. >> and he pointed out that hillary in the debate had actually gone to his wedding and when we asked her about that, i asked her about that in new hampshire just two days ago. she didn't really have an answer. she said, well, it's entertainment. i thought it would be fun. i was in florida. she didn't really explain why she was going to donald trump's
9:06 am
wedding. >> she probably needs to give a better example because he decided he had her there because he was a big donor. >> exactly. a donor to the clinton foundation. let me ask you about joe biden because we know he's in south carolina reaching of it to democrats, talking about dealing with his grief but also talking about what would happen if he decided to make this race. how seriously do you think he's considering it while he's down there in south carolina? >> it's serious. i certainly heard about conversations he's had with people over the last few weeks. it's my understanding he doesn't give a hint that he's close to running. he simply says he's looking at the viability of putting a campaign together, trying to make sure he has that option. believing that he does, that if he decides to do this. but it's my understanding that it's a less than 50/50 proposition in his own head right now. that's what it's about. he's doing -- it's my understanding he's making the calls you need to make so that if he says -- if he decides to
9:07 am
go, then he can start the infrastructure pretty quickly. look, he can easily put together a campaign in iowa. that's not difficult. there are enough people on the sidelines that are not with sanders or clinton to do that. probably the same in south carolina and in new hampshire. the bigger question is the money for national campaign. that's what's not fully there. and i think that that -- whether that has an impact -- look, he knows why he wants to run. he believes he would be a better candidate than she is. but he also isn't going to do something that's -- >> and do you think that it becomes more likely as hillary clinton has problems with the e-mail, has to turn over the server, the fbi investigation, does that have an impact? >> we can't crawl inside his head. i can just tell you based on conversations that i know he's had with people, he doesn't believe she's been running a good campaign and he doesn't believe -- and he believes he
9:08 am
could run a better campaign than her. but he's also realistic. he doesn't know whether the democratic party will come nominate him even if he runs a better campaign over her. >> and as howard dean said on the "today" show this morning he thinks it's a younger electorate and that joe biden has sort of missed his chance, presumably what dean would say is that she, as the woman candidate, has something to offer historically. >> it is amazing though if he gets in the three leading candidates, no one will be younger than 67, i believe. and certainly nobody younger than only one candidate would be younger than 70 if they took over -- if they became president, that's hillary clinton at the time that she would get sworn in. the democratic party, the party of younger voters has the oldest slate of candidates. >> you've got a biggest for "meet the press."
9:09 am
the republicans want donald trump. >> yeah, it appears they do. he's very entertaining. republicans here in eiowa just say he's entertaining. he also has a certain quality about him that makes caucus goers believe he can sprinkle prosperity fairy dust around. >> and, katy tur, you cover donald trump all the time. you've asked him tough questions po. to get him to really drill down on how does he create jobs, you got a lot of slogans but you don't have a lot of detail.
9:10 am
>> and he doesn't give a lot of detail. hannity was trying to get him to get detail on whether he wanted a flat tax or not. he was still skirting the issue basically saying trust me, i know what i'm doing. i'm going to make america great again. the slogan which he's copyrighted. when we speak to the voters they do trust him. he knows what he's going to do because he is able to put the people around him who will figure out how best to solve these problems. he doesn't necessarily have to know how to solve health care in this couldn't but he will hire someone who knows how to do it. >> this is a remarkable thing. here we have an anti-establishment candidate and a sentiment out there, you know, bernie sanders is drawing huge crowds talking about going against the billionaires and when you ask donald trump whom would he put in his cabinet he says cakarl, i ca icahn, all of
9:11 am
hedge fund guys who elizabeth warren tells us are the worst thing hats happened to the country. it's remarkable. >> it is remarkable. i'm not sure these attack on trump for not providing policy details or being inconsistent over the years really get to the point that has drawn supporters to him in the republican party. i don't think they're really looking for a guy who has a spotless history or seven-point policy plan. they want somebody who is going to shake things up. they don't think washington works for them or for the country. they would like somebody who would mix it up and make a difference. one thing you can say about donald trump, he is not afraid to break some pottery. >> break the whole set of dishes, in fact. chris cillizza, let's talk about hillary clinton and what she's gone through with the e-mail controversy. i talked to bernie sanders last night about that and here's part of what he said in a telephone interview. >> i honestly believe that the american people are tired of old-fashioned politics where you're supposed to be beating up all of your opponents.
9:12 am
i like hillary clinton. i respect hillary clinton. i disagree with hillary clinton on many issues. that's what i'll be talking about. >> the republicans were all ganging up on her yesterday. jeb bush was saying it's the drip, drip, drip. they haven't handled this properly. you know, all sense of criticism, scott walker. donald trump called it criminal behavior for which there is no evidence, but that's never topped candidates from saying things like that. but the one candidate who is amassing huge crowds, thousands and thousands of people all over the country against hillary clinton is refusing to criticize her. >> yeah, i mean, if it's a strategy, it's a relatively smart strategy, andrea, by bernie sanders which is this story is getting enough attention, the hillary clinton e-mail, it's not as though he would pile on in order to get people to pay attention to it. that said, i don't know that it is a strategy. i think it's possible that bernie sanders, this is a guy who was sort of operated at the fringes of american politics and it's possible he doesn't -- he
9:13 am
believes deeply in campaign finance reform, has limited the amount of money he can take. he may be genuinely committed to not saying an unkind thing about hillary clinton. i don't know if in the long run he could possibly win a nomination by not draw that contrast. do we want to go back to sort of this old way of doing politic or do we want to try something new? but for the moment, i think the story is saturated enough that bernie sanders can just sort of let it spool out and continue to do his thing parallel to it. >> and she is still, jennifer jacobs, she is still defeating or leading, i should say, bernie sanders by 20 points among e iowans. are people out there talking about the e-mail issue or is that not on the radar? >> it is among those sanders supporters when i talk to them and say why not hillary clinton, they do say there is a trust factor there.
9:14 am
the people still looking at biden to get in the race almost mentioned that. they -- it's not that they don't like her or trust her necessarily, it's they worry about how that will affect her in the general election. like you said, hillary has a safe haven here in iowa. she does very, very well with women and 54% of likely democratic caucus goers are women. and, you know, we asked people do you consider yourself liberal or moderates. 45% said liberal. hillary clinton is winning with those liberal voters right now even. so they're not decided yet. so there is some wiggle room for this e-mail situation to sink in to people's psyches and to make them, you know, change their mind. more than 50% of likely caucus goers say they have just not locked in to a candidate yet. >> in that franklin pierce boston herald poll, 46% of democratic voters said that joe biden should run for president. on the "today" show they asked howard dean that question today and this is the response. >> the problem is that joe biden
9:15 am
is a very good guy and probably has no appeal whatsoever to people under 35. people under 35 elected barack obama president of the united states. >> biden is trying to make? >> well, i think that we know, and joe biden has made it clear in public and in private he would like to run for president, that he would like to be president, that he thinks he would be a good president. he's got a mission, but i think he's trying to figure out if there is actually an opening for him to be president. his last two presidential campaigns, neither one of them took off. he was a younger man at that point than he is now, his age becomes something of a factor here. he would be facing someone who has raised a ton of money and is
9:16 am
very well organized, although she's having her problems now. i think we know he wants to run and the question is does he think he can run, run in a way that would have a credible campaign, not one that would be embarrassing. i think that's a question only he can answer for himself. >> i'm not so sure he's close to that answer yet, in fact, susan. susan page, thank you. katie kur, chris cillizza, jennifer jacobs, everybody, thanks very much for being with us today. and up next, a really terrible situation, devastation in china. the scene around the explosion has been described as a total loss. more in a live report. coming up next. and still later -- >> i think what's going to hurt the most is when people start saying to us you have contaminated food, we're not

11 million people, only 70 miles from beijing, the death toll is rising after massive explosions. a warehouse that stored hazardous chemicals blew up. the two blasts captured on cellphone video were strong enough to light up the nighttime sky.
9:21 am
at least 50 people are now dead. hundreds are injured. an american man now living in tianjin was watching a movie with his girlfriend when the explosion hit. >> all of a sudden there's like a loud, like a shockwave sound. i looked out and i saw the plume of smoke. huge plume of smoke. of course immediately pictures, videos, terrible things, people with glass injuries, people on the street, around the area, on the ground, incapacitated, people walking to the hospital. >> nbc's kelly is monitoring all of this from london. kelly, what is the chinese government doing because the way they handle these kinds of emergencies, the earthquakes in the past, schools that collapsed, very controversial with local residents. >> yeah, information is not coming -- not flowing freely, i guess you could put it that way, from the chinese officials. we are getting some information
9:22 am
from them. for example, the casualty numbers which just keep going up, 701 hospitalized, 71 of them are either serious or critical, 50 dead, as you mentioned. among them, 12 firefighters, 18 firefighters missing. i mean, the numbers are just astounding. and as it turns out, it appears that the fire at this industrial facility may have actually started as early as 10:50 local time last night. by 11:30, half an hour later it set off the two explosions and really that's what did most of the damage. but in terms of what caused this, what caused the initial fire, andrea, we're not hearing much at all from chinese officials. >> and just the fact that the communication is so difficult, getting information out of there, this is a major city, a major industrial city. we understand the company involved has been detained, officials have been detained by the government?
9:23 am
>> that's right. official state media has said that some officials with the company, they haven't specified which officials or how many, have been detained and the president is promising very severe punishment if anyone is found to be responsible for this. and it's also raising a lot of questions about how these chemicals were stored. this warehouse was storing some very dangerous, hazardous, and inflammable chemicals including sodium cyanide, compressed natural gas, some 700 tons of sodium cyanide, as a matter of fact. so people are asking, wait a minute, what's happening here? were they stored safly and were residential areas too close? there were residential areas within a mile of this warehouse. it's interesting, andrea, during a live press conference covered on state television today, when an environmental official was asked whether people were living too close to this scene, the
9:24 am
state media cut away from that live press conference and then came back several minutes later. so no response to that. and that's indicative of just how sensitive this issue is to the chinese government. >> indeed. thank you so much, kelly. and a scary scene at a famous minneapolis venue last night as many as four people were hurt when the ceiling inside first avenue collapsed during a performance. the band cleared the stage. the club was quickly evacuated. >> suddenly, you could see these red lights flashing. and part of the ceiling just, boom, like caved right in. it looked like it was towards the back. >> i saw some like flashlights that were kind of directing people out. so then i kind of got the clue that we had to evacuate. >> the fire department is checking into reports that a pipe may have burst in the ceiling. you might recognize this club. if you've ever seen the rock movie "purple rain," prince frequently played first avenue in the '80s and filled part of the movie there. fighting cancer.
