since joining the draft biden pack. also black lives matter interrupt a jeb bush rally. i'll speak with the two activists that led that demonstration, and the horrific explosion in china kills 50 and injures hundreds. we are on the ground where rescue and cleanup operations are still underway. it's home to blue ribbon steers, fried food on a stick and the butter cow. the iowa state fair kicks off today. aside from the rides and deep fried other yowls, it's a major test for the 2016 presidential candidates. today mike huckabee was first up on the famous soap box. take a listen. >> big changes, not little things, we have to make some
1:01 pm
truly major changes, like get the fair tax passed and quit punishing people for their work, and once and for all, get rid of the criminal enterprise known as the internal revenue service. >> jeb bush is also in iowa. wrapping up a national security event before he hits the soap box tomorrow. he had work to do. jeb bush is well behind front-runner donald trump, trailing six other candidates, and tied at 5%. a big question will be, how will iowa voters react to the front-runner, can donald trump stay on top in iowa, in a press release today, trump declaring in no uncertain terms he will be seeing the butter cow. joining us now from des moines, iowa, casey hunt. casey, i see you have a big smile on your face, we're going to talk about the butter cow, believe me, i want to know what that is. let me start off by asking you, what's the vibe there right now. who are folks most excited to see at the fair?
1:02 pm
>> donald trump is the straightforward answer to that question ayman. he's brought celebrity back to politics, while there's a mixed variety of views, it's certainly something that everyone's talking about, which is pretty remarkable, considering hillary clinton is expected at this point at least to be at the fair, she's going to be in iowa over the weekend, potentially on the same day as donald trump. i do have to tell you, the butter cow is a full sized cow carved out of butter. you really have to come out here and take a look at it for yourself if you've never seen it before. the deep fried oreos are excellent. >> i take it you've tried the deep fried oreos. >> they are my favorite food. today i learned how to fry a corn dog, and also fried some cheese, some mac & cheese. there's a wide variety of things available. the oreos are definitely my favorite. >> we're going to talk about that and a few other things.
1:03 pm
i want to bring our political panel into this discussion. managing editor of the post. republican strategist former aide to george h.w. bush. thank you for joining us. let me start off with you, a billionaire businessman walks into the iowa state fair, how is this going to go over with folks out there? >> i believe he's going to fly. i think he's landing somewhere near the state fair in his helicopter, which is amazing in and of itself. so normally, i would say, you know, will it fit? can he sell the populous thing, he's been selling it well this far. i'm rich enough to be able to tell people how it is, i'm not owned by anyone, like all these other politicians. someone who is skeptical of donald trump at the start, i've learned not to be skeptical any more. he has that populous pitch down. and at least for some segment of the republican party, it's resonating quite clearly. >> the new iowa poll has trump
1:04 pm
leading among republicans on his handling of some very important issues like the economy, illegal immigration, and even terrorism. and a huge lead on bringing change to washington. is this a vote of no confidence for those republicans that are holding office? >> well, i don't know that it's a vote of no confidence, it's just that donald trump is the ultimate outsider, i mean, he's not in politics, he doesn't talk like a politician, he doesn't look like a politician, he doesn't sound like a politician. and his answers aren't political answers. they're very straightforward, sometimes they may not sound as if they're terribly detailed. for the most part, he's resonating with voters. and really taken advantage of this new age. what i mean by that, we look at social media, donald trump, i've been saying this for weeks, has been leading by a lot. of all the candidates in social media. he's tweeting like mad. he's taking full advantage of
1:05 pm
social media to reach out to people on a daily basis. he's staying pretty high on the polls, i mean, it's defying even my prediction last week, that he would probably see a drop in the poll after his performance last week at the debates. he stays strong. >> is this what folks out there are saying, are they in fact, seeing him as an outsider from the other establishment candidates? how is he perceived in iowa where you are? >> i mean, i think people are just angry, and they want someone who's going to be willing to speak truth to power in a really plunt way, and they like the fact that he doesn't seem to be politically correct. i'll also point you to a story that just came out at the washington post. talking about how trump is making a legitimate effort to win iowa in the old fashioned way, he's had a bus plastered with this slogan, driving all over the state the past few months, he's hired an operative
1:06 pm
here who is actually the architect behind rick santorum's eventual victory here. now, santorum obviously won the state, he didn't win on caucus night, but was declared the winner in 2012. he won with shoe leather and sweat. that's how chuck loughner knows how to win a campaign here. if trump applies that to his overall ability to get people to pay attention, it's pretty powerful here, that's why you're starting to hear the other republican campaigns factor in the possibility that trump could be a real force here even as we start to go to the caucuses. >> trump is leading among tea party supporters in iowa about. >> corporations are people, my friend. everything corporations earn ultimately goes to people. [ laughter ] >> where do you think it goes? >> back in their pockets. >> is trump handling his wealth
1:07 pm
differently from romney in 2011? in airway that's more appealing to voters? >> i was standing about 15 feet to the right during that. i remember sweating all over the place watching him do that and thinking, this is bad? >> he is. mitt romney was always sort of awkward when talking about his wealth. everyone knew he was quite well thy, and he had largely built it on his own. he never should have felt comfortable talking about it. donald trump is an exception, not the rule here, trump seems to be not only comfortable talking about it, but likes to talk about it as much as possible. >> he likes to boast about his wealth. >> let me ask you this, trump's latest showdown with rand paul. he did his impression of trump last night. check this out. >> the reason we tell women they're ugly is because i'm so good looking. i must be smart, i'm rich. i'm rich, i got to be smart, right?
1:08 pm
>> now, that was after rand paul put out an ad with a bunch of trump's former liberal statements prompting trump to respond with this quote. unless you're a piece of unyielding granite over the years, the campaign is a total mess. as a matter of fact, i didn't know he had anybody left in his campaign to make commercials who are not currently under indictment. >> i think for the most part, donald trump has gotten the better of this, of course. since donald trump is getting so much attention in the media, just to attack donald trump means you get some of the attention also. rand paul is smart, at least they try to get the donald trump's attention, i think he's going to come out in the short side of that. >> let's talk about some of the other candidates. jeb bush, what does he have to do in iowa. he's stuck in a three-way tie for sixth place, how is he going to break out of that. >> how they ultimately make the
1:09 pm
strategic decision with how they're going to compete here, are they going to tell reporters behind the scenes that this is something they want to put a lot of resources in and win? is it going to be a place he spends a lot of time. half of the game here in this state is simply setting expectations, and making sure that you don't fall short of them, so i think that that's where he's going to be. there is a significant chunk -- people talk about the social conservatives, that is certainly very important here. and a significant segment of the republican electorate. on caucus night, mitt romney did come out on top, when the votes were initially counted. those are people who are potentially more moderate republicans, that's a big space for someone like jeb bush to potentially play. i think the question for him overall, both in iowa and elsewhere, is whether or not he's going to be able to step up into this front-runner role that he's been assigned so far, and that his bank account would suggest that he should occupy.
1:10 pm
i'm not sure we're going to see that, until we get to the face of this campaign. jeb bush is really suffering in the earned media phase. >> chris, straight up question, should jeb bush consider skipping iowa all together? >> easy answer, because i've written this before, yes. i think he should -- you know, casey is right, it's sort of about -- jeb bush is never going to say like john mccain did in 2000, i'm ignoring iowa. he's going to probably -- i think he should downplay it, make clear that new hampshire, south carolina and nevada, florida, the states that come after iowa are the ones that he's really putting an emphasis on. it's possible given his money, and again casey is right here, 114 million between the super pack and the candidate. he could overwhelm the iowa airwaves. the last two winners of the iowa caucuses were social conservatives who were underfunded running against better funded social candidates.
1:11 pm
i don't know if money alone solves the problem. i think it should be a consideration for him. i would guess it probably is. >> you think he should also skip? >> well, no, i think that he probably knows he's not going to place really high in the iowa caucus. maybe if he does better in seventh place, that's okay. remember, his father didn't win iowa either. as a matter of fact, the last few winners of iowa have not been the eventual nominee of the party. jeb will put a lot of emphasis in new hampshire. ultimately he'll do very well there. >> casey, i want you to post the picture of you eating a fried oreo sandwich. >> i will consider that. >> thank you very much. everyone is talking about, will joe biden run for president? we're learning about calls he's making, and more on a report that his late son urged him to run before passing. beau biden's campaign adviser
1:12 pm
joins us next. also ahead, this. protesters interrupt jeb bush chanting, black lives matter. two activists that talked with bush. and the massive explosion rocking china, killing at least 50 people, we have new dramatic pictures coming in. and a report on the ground. s ta, soaring away from home towards the promise of a better existence. but these birds are suffering. because this better place turned out to have a less reliable cell phone network, and the videos on their little bird phones kept buffering. birds hate that. so they came back home. come home to verizon and now get 12 gigs for $80 a month plus $20 per line. verizon. come home to a better network.

the investigation into hillary clinton's e-mails is heating up, nbc news confirming today that clinton turned her private server over to the fbi. and it comes as she now trails bernie sanders in new hampshire. this may get even more interesting. a new report reveals joe biden is calling allies about a
1:16 pm
possible run while on vacation. joining me now for the very latest nbc news white house correspondent kristen welker. let's start off with the big question on everyone's mind. what are you hearing about joe biden looking at a possible 2016 run? >> i spoke with the source close to biden who had an extensive phone call with him this week. biden is calling his closest friends and allies while he vacations in south carolina. the tone is not so much asking people if he should run, but rather that he's thinking about running. but he's also thinking about his late son bowe. just to remind everyone, beau passed away tragically after a battle with brain cancer. biden is still very much grieving his son's death. but there are a lot of supporters who are urging biden to run, and their key argument to him is that clinton is showing signs of vulnerability, and biden has spent eight years in the white house, which makes him uniquely prepared to do this. those conversations are ongoing,
1:17 pm
we're watching very closely. no sign that he's close to making a decision just yet. >> sticking with that subject. the latest poll shows biden in third place with about 12%, that's without having launched a campaign. what are insiders saying about his chances if he does get in. >> well, look, they say he's considering it, but the reality is, he and his aids know it is late. and there's still no formal campaign infrastructure in place. or even starting to take shape. a second source tells me this is going to be a decision biden makes with his family, and he's still on track to make that decision by late august or early september. and those who want him to run say that would be enough time, there are supporters of his who have a campaign plan in place, and they would put that plan into effect if biden were to give them the go. but again, he's not close to making a decision, and i reached out to biden's official spokesperson who says there are no updates from their end.
1:18 pm
clearly that is not something that he's ready to weigh-in on yet. keeping in in close contact with our sources as these conversations are ongoing. >> nbc's kristen welker, thank you very much. how seriously is joe biden considering a run? speculation really started earlier this month, when the new york times reported that shortly before biden's son beau died saying the country would be better served with his father and not hillary clinton in the white house. that speculation went into overdrive, that beau's former senior adviser had signed up with the super pac. joining us now, biden's super pa pack. what are you hearing, is the vice president going to run in 2016? >> i sure hope he does. what he's doing right now, he's going through a deliberative process that he's done twice before with his family, his
1:19 pm
inner circle of advisers to make that decision. >> have you spoken to him personally? do you have a better sense? i understand you would like to see him, certainly all the members of the draft pac want to see limb run. do you know if he's any closer to making a decision? >> i haven't spoken to him, and i think the time line is -- >> obviously one of the big stories was the report that maureen dowd reported about his late son beau and we mentioned that earlier there, that he really encouraged his father to run. there's nobody else that perhaps knew beau better than you did, at least from a political advisory point of view, can you set the record straight on that, did beau biden want to see his father run for the presidency? >> there's no doubt in my mind beau thought his dad would have been an incredible president. we talked a lot about 2016 when we were together, he talked a lot about, who would we bring into the fold, hire for pulses
1:20 pm
and things like that, he was talking about his race for governor in 2016. >> what did he say about his father running in 2016. >> whenever we got to talking about his dad's race, beau would look at me and say, you'll still work for me, right? >> when was the last time you spoke to the vice president? >> i saw him at beau's funeral. >> at beau's funeral. let's talk a little bit about the wall street journal today which reported he will announce his decision next month many are we any closer to a decision? >> i think the time line is what the time line is. he has a deliberative process he has to go through with his family. he has to understand the commitments -- he'll make up his mind when he makes up his mind. >> this was a sound bite from howard dean, obviously, former dnc chairman. we'll play that and get your reaction to it. >> i have a lot of respect for joe biden, he's been a terrific vice president. the problem is, joe biden is a
1:21 pm
very good guy, and probably has no appeal whatsoever, to people under 35. >> how do you respond to that? it's sharp criticism. >> i have the utmost respect for governor dean much i think what joe biden has done over the last 40 years is an incredible amount of work for all kinds of americans. i think what joe biden has to do over the next 4 to 6 weeks as we wait his announcement, remind people who joe biden is, the author of the violence against women act. touched millions of people's lives. this is a guy who fought to keep robert fork off the supreme court. and all the implications that has had for marriage equality and obama care now too. >> you look out on the landscape and see hillary clinton with the changes she's facing, you look at somebody like bernie sanders, wonder if he has what it takes to get through the finish line, how do you read the political landscape of the democratic primaries? is that an incentive for the vice president to run?
1:22 pm
does it work in your favor or is it discouraging? >> that's a really good question. what i've been thinking about for the last two weeks is that republican debate last thursday when you looked at the vision of america as put forward as candidates for president. we can do that. senator sanders or anyone else running, we can do better than the republicans. >> obviofbviousobviously, the ps that hrj hrn is going to be the democratic nomination. what would a presidential candidate by the vice president look like? how would it be different than a hillary clinton campaign? what would his message be to the american people? >> joe biden is one of the most straightforward honest connecting with people, he's incredible with that, that is what he'll bring to this race, he's the guy that walks the walk, and talks the talk, he's been doing this for a long time. he has a long record to run on. >> thank you very much. i appreciate you coming in. certainly going to be waiting and watching very closely.
1:23 pm
if you have any insight, let us know. >> thank you. am coulding up, 50 people are dead, and more than 500 injured in northern klein, that after devastating explosions at a toxic chemical warehouse. we're live in china with the latest. jeb bush meets the black lives matter movement. i'll speak with the two advocates who spoke with him. proof of less joint pain. and clearer skin. this is my body of proof that i can fight psoriatic arthritis from the inside out ...with humira. humira works by targeting and helping to block a specific source of inflammation that contributes to both joint and skin symptoms. it's proven to help relieve pain, stop further joint damage and clear skin in many adults. doctors have been prescribing humira for nearly 10 years. humira can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis serious, sometimes fatal infections and cancers, including lymphoma, have happened, as have blood, liver and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening heart failure.

inch credible scenes out of china today. the blasts which occurred at a warehouse left 50 people dead and 700 injured. many of them critically. kelly co buy aya has more on this story. >> reporter: a fire so big it could be seen from space. the eruptions lit the night sky in china. a warehouse storing highly flammable materials, exploding
1:27 pm
not once. but twice. the warehouse belonging to a company licensed to deal in hazardous materials, it handles a million tons every year. daylight shows the extent of the devastation 12 firefighters among the dead. hospitals, emergency services overflowing. trying to cope with the hundreds wounded. the second blast was equal to more than 20 tons of explosives. >> i looked out and saw the plume of smoke, huge plume of smoke, and i was like, oh, man. >> the shocks felt six miles away, so strong they registered on a nearby earthquake monitor. >> shock waves from the explosion slammed into the building that we live in. >> some dazed residents thought it was an earthquake until they saw the white light. row upon row of cars waiting to be shipped, now just blackened
1:28 pm
metal. it's now known worldwide as a smoldering disaster zone. joining me now, nbc news corresponding, what's the latest from there? >> hi, ayman. the death toll has reached 50, with 70 more people critically injured. and another 700 hospitalized. we're not sure either the precise number still missing. that's certain to be in the dozens. and in the hospital today, there were many people there looking for relatives, looking to see how their loved ones were getting on. also, trying to find people who are still unaccounted for. the police have strung of what remains of that warehouse, which is still burning. there are flames. there is smoke coming from there, four separate fires we're told, about a mile and a half behind me. now, the task of the firefighters, 1,000 of them is made all the more difficult because they're not sure
1:29 pm
precisely what they're up against, chemical fires always very difficult and volatile, officials have yet to say precisely what the chemicals wear, what that toxic mix of chemicals and gases was, that exploded late last night. not only does that make firefighting a problem, it's increased concerns and anxieties within the local community here about what precisely they're breathing. officials today tried to reassure them, that people are and they continue to be very concerned, ayman. >> ian williams, thank you very much. moving on to the middle east, where a massive truck bomb struck a crowded food market in baghdad this morning, leaving at least 60 people dead and more than 200 wounded. the attack claimed almost immediately by the islamic state, took place in the shiite neighborhood of seder city. it was the deadliest blast since isis militants took control of large parts of the country last

we're back with stories making headlines at this hour. 2016 candidates are converging on the hawkeye state as the iowa state fair gets underway. they hit the soap box today, martin o'malley is up next at the top of the hour. donald trump will touchdown in iowa saturday. the latest poll in that state has him well in front of his republican rivals. a story everyone is watching closely. renewed questions today about whether joe biden will jump into
1:34 pm
the democratic primary. a new report revealed vice president joe biden is calling allies about a possible run while on vacation. jeb bush became the last candidate to face off against the black lives matter movement. it all started when bush was asked what he would do to combat institutional racism. take a listen. >> there is racism in america, no one should deny that. there's been significant progre progress. [ inaudible ] >> i relate to that by saying, i'm just -- i relate to it by -- to try to create a climate where there is civility and understanding, and to encourage mayors, leaders at the local level to engage so there's not despair and isolation in
1:35 pm
communities. >> the town hall then ended abruptly. protesters began chanting black lives matter, bush supporters shouted, white lives matter. the candidate met with black lives matter advocates before the event. joining me now are two of the protesters at jeb bush's town hall last night. thank you both very much for joining us. jamie, if i could start with you, and ask, why did you decide to target jeb bush last night? >> my concern with any presidential candidate, if you're wanting to be the leader of the free world or one of the superpowers of the world, you need to be prepared to face all of the issues that face that country at the moment. not just be able to pick and choose what you want to do. any presidential candidate that wants to come through las vegas can get the same questions just
1:36 pm
as any. we live in the community, we face these issues and we want answers to them. we want someone in place that can make some change. it needs to come from the top down. >> you asked jeb bush whether he could relate to you as a single mom and about your son and the racial tensions that you experience as a family. were you satisfied with the answer he gave you? >> no, i feel like his answers are all politically correct. they're just in line with, you know, whatever he's being told to say rather than giving an answer from the heart, something he's truly researched and truly in touch with. >> what would you like to hear him say? what would be an answer that you would found satisfactory. >> i would like a plan how he's going to relate and unite all of the different people that are divided right now in our country. we're divided by race, religion,
1:37 pm
divided by social ladder. there is so many division factors. i'd like to hear a plan of a candidate that's actually going to speak on how those divisive gorges are going to be sewn together and bring us together in the united states. >> and as i understand it, jamie, as you were leaving and chanting, there were some at the event who also began to shout white lives matter. what do you make of the event, the response that your chants got with white lives matter? >> well, that only comes about when a group is being oppressed and we start to rise against the oppressor, and others feel, we matter too. it didn't matter when we weren't talking about it, now all of a sudden it matters, and so it's almost like -- i can't think of the word, but you're just bringing it up now that we're
1:38 pm
making it an instance. you weren't saying this in the 80s, the 90s, the 70s or 50s, but now in the 2000s, when there's a big uprising of oppressed people talking about it, white lives matter. it's a joke almost. >> there was a protest that disrupted the bernie sanders campaign. tenisha i wanted to ask you about a donald trump sound bite. >> i would never give up my microphone, i thought that was disgusting, that showed such weakness, the way he was taken away by two young women. the microphone, they just took the whole place over. that will never happen with me. i don't know if i'll do the fighting myself or if other people will. that was a disgrace. >> what is your response to donald trump's comments? >> i think that activists are
1:39 pm
having to seize the moment, take an opportunity to go to whatever platform that is and speak up and bring attention to this matter. whether it's considered disrespectful or outlandish, it really doesn't matter, it's bringing attention and that's the point we're trying to bring attention to the matter, it's working. bernie sanders made changing the next day, how he was running his campaign, and his list of objectives, what order they were in. by someone saying they won't allow us to speak or be heard is not about what our country is about, we're about democracy, about the people and for donald trump to say that, he won't stand for his people talking and being loud and maybe opposing and him being able to argue it rather than just saying he wouldn't allow it is ridiculous, he should be up for the fight and hearing all types of opinions and people. >> tenisha and jamie, thank you

no sixth grader's ever sat with but your jansport backpack is permission to park it wherever you please. hey. that's that new gear feeling. this week, filler paper and folders just one cent. office depot officemax. gear up for school. gear up for great. welcome back, everyone. 21 kids between the ages of 8 to 19 years old are suing the obama administration over climate change. according to a lawsuit which also involves james hanson as a plaintiff, an action on the global climate crisis is a violation to their right to life, liberty and property. they're demanding that president obama and seven federal departments and the epa act immediately to preserve the climate for future generations. one of those kids is 15-year-old martinez. thank you very much for joining us. i want to ask you right off the
1:44 pm
bat, why did you decide to join this lawsuit? >> i think i've been on the front lines of the climate and environmental movement the last nine years of my life. i'm seeing an opportunity for young people to engage in the political system the way we've never done before. this has a way to change laws and get people involved. young people do care about the futures, the problems at hand and we're willing to do something about it. >> do you think that the lawsuit has a chance of success, or is this more about raising awareness and publicity, and trying to get more folks to join your cause. >> i think it's a combination of all of those, i believe that we have this opportunity to make a difference here in this country and set a bar for the rest of the world to follow along, as far as taking immediate action
1:45 pm
