day. both bush and rubio asked today about trump's plans to repeal. >> it this is a constitutionally protected right. and i don't support revoking it. >> is the idea of birthright citizenship so sacred that it cannot change. >> the constitution can always be amended. i personally don't think we need to change it. i'm open to changes that allow us to prevent people from deliberately doing that. >> what would that look like. >> i don't know. it is an issue we haven't spent a lot of time focusing on. >> kelly, you are out there and with the mix of republicans and even the fair goers. do you get a sense birthright citizenship is something the grop really wants to be talking about right now? >> it is a complicated issue because there are aspects of it that are clearly at the core of what so many voters are angry about. the idea that someone could come to the united states illegally with the express purpose of having a child who would be a citizen and therefore setting
1:03 pm
off the chain migration that would allow a family to be in the united states. that is a complicated issue. it has been part of our country's fabric for a long time. and there are some who have done so illegally with that intention. not just from mexico or central america. marco rubio today saying there are people from china who are doing it. it is part of a broader conversation but this is one of the issues that comes out of the donald trump plan. and we're asking various candidates what their views are. and some of those who are in office now and running for office saying is there a way to have some kind of limitation as people who could be identified with doing wit that intent. that is thorny and no one has said how that would look. marco rubio you heard would be open to those changes but not sure how. carly fiorina says no, this is the constitution. no change is needed. scott walker, too was saying maybe prospectively there would be some change.
1:04 pm
but no firm plan. i also had a chance to talk with ohio governor john kasich who is here today and a few years ago when he was a member of congress, he was on the list of those republicans who thought there could perhaps be a change to birth right citizenship. but that is not his view today. and i asked how did he evolve on this? here is his response. >> how have you evolved on this. >> well because i frankly didn't know as much about it when you stick your name on a bill when you are in congress and it can match you left and right. but i don't think we need to go there at this point. whether i think we need to do is finish the wall and make it clear anybody who comes over that wall is going to go back. and we need to deal with the 11, 12 million and if they haven't committed crimes there should be a path to legalization. >> and i said how is it that you learned more about it? he said he simply read more, studied it more. and today john kasich, candidate for president, says he does not want to support efforts that
1:05 pm
divide the country. and he thinks the topic of birthright citizenship does just that. but there are other parts of the very complicated web of issues that are immigration and immigration reform that could come first. most republicans will say securing the border first is what voters want to do. and something that is the federal government's responsibility. so it has been one big topic. we've been talking to candidates about if trump has been a summer storm, these candidates here today, ayman, both marco rubio and john kasich have also been dealing with the traditional kind of iowa reynish and the mud that it brings. >> and donald still setting the agenda. thank you for that. for more our panel now.
1:06 pm
thank you all for vuch for joining us. michelle let me start with you. it doesn't look like they wanted to address this issue now but it has become the key question for all of the candidates in iowa. what do you think about this particular issue now becoming the key question for candidates? are they handling it well do you think? >> some of them are handling it well. i think the answer that we saw from governor kasich was not a bad answer. and we've also seen something positive being said by jeb bush. most of the republican field is probably not anxious to discuss this issue because the republican party, or large element of the republican party have been painted as antiimmigrant, particularly antilatino. but i also think that by having this discussion it gives some of the more what i could call serious candidates an opportunity to really talk about america as the melting pot and what their vision for the future of the country looks like and what we mean when we talk about birthright citizenship. i can not imagine that most of the public would ever agree to
1:07 pm
start deporting people who were born here, even if their parents were here illegally. how are you going to make a determination of who gets to stay, who gets deported? and also quite frankly ayman, if the country has a whole did not support amending the constitution to deal with gay marriage, amending the constitution to deal with the equal rights amendment,ky not imagine that we're ever going to amend the constitution to basically deport or deny citizenship to people who are born here regardless of the status of their parents. >> and today the post asks this. did republicans just give away the 2016 election by raising birthright citizenship? what is the impact of this conversation on the gop, both in the primary and even potentially at the general election stage? >> start with this. mitt romney got 27% of the hispanic vote in 2012. down from the 31% mccain got four years earlier.
1:08 pm
in the republican national committee autopsy that came out after that election they made quite clear they needed to be on board with comprehensive immigration reform or they ran the risk of losing the hispanic vote. the more -- it goes directly against that. it adds to the perception that the republican party might not be a home short-term or long-term for hispanic americans. that is a huge potential problem for them ayman. i don't know -- look, i think they had a problem with hispanic community and vote prior to donald trump, prior to birthright citizenship conversations. this doesn't help. how much carryover is there? i don't know. but it is a neutral at best for the republican party. and it could possibly be quite a bit worse than that. >> and i'd like to pose the same question about this particular issue. birthright citizenship, donald trump has thrusted into the center of the agenda for the current topics we're discussing.
1:09 pm
this a double edge sword for the republican party? he's out in front about it but can this come back and perhaps in the general election be a difficult point for the gop to handle? >> ayman, i think a really good example here is what happened in 1994 in california, when governor pete willson came out with prop 187 which essentially would cutoff latinos from all services. for example public schools. and what we saw the latino population do in response was mobilize. they started getting registered and turned california from a state that goes sometimes republican into sometimes democrat into a solidly democratic state. i think what could happen here with trump is if we continue seeing the strength of trump is latinos will be mobilized. sadly latinos are growing but they are not voting commensurate to their size. if that anger added a donald trump and a add a republican party that is shunning them,
1:10 pm
grows, then we can see in 2016 and going forward latinos coming together, making sure they register to vote and turning out in unprecedented levels. if the trump phenomena dies out perhaps this doesn't happen. but if we keep seeing the level of support that trump has, which is 24% in the latest cnn poll, i think that latinos may be mobilizing and in particular for the democratic party. >> and michelle, it seems that everything that donald trump is working in his favor. nothing is hurting donald trump with the gop and potential voters. not immigration, not the debate, not even his compensates about megyn kelly. i'd like to put there up in fact. the new poll finds trump's favorability at 60% with republican women. in their eyes what is it that donald trump is doing right? >> ayman, i wish i had an answer for you. but i have been thinking about it since these polls came out in late july and i honestly cannot figure out it out. other than the fact that donald
1:11 pm
trump very clearly is not your typical establishment republican. if we look at the republican electorate as a whole f the numbers, you know, are really that large for women -- women who vote republican or lean republican, i can only imagine that the appeal is that they are tired. just like the rest of the country is, of establishment-type politicians. so whether -- regardless of what he said about megyn kelly on the other issues, whether it's immigration, education, whether it's national security. simply because he doesn't give the same answers or the same non answers that we hear from other candidates, that quite frankly i can imagine to be the only appeal that donald trump has among women voters right now. you know during one of the debates recently in a press conference i saw him give, he said day i donald trump want to take care of women and i will be the best president ever for women. but he never explained what that
1:12 pm
meant. and he never understood what made him believe that women voters want to be taken care of. so i believe that as we get into the nitty-gritty more and talk about issues that are sometimes more concern that women than they are to others that we're going to continue to see that gender gap among women voters in the republican party and also on the democratic side when we get to a general election and that will be a problem for trump. >> chris, you see the new poll out today and other candidates continue to struggle for attention. it's been three days since i guess donald trump was even in iowa but he's still setting the agenda for the folks in iowa. how do those other candidates get out of trump's shadow? >> well i think there are a few different categories. for a jeb bush or a marco rubio or a scat walker even i don't know they necessarily feel they have to compete with trump right now. i think they generally like where they are. they have raised enough money and waiting to see how this trump things plays out.
1:13 pm
but i think they are okay. the rand paul, rick perry, everybody else. chris christie. for those kind of folks it is hard. very difficult. trump dictates the agenda with a tweet or with a cable tv hit. whereas they have laid out a long policy proposal like scott walker on healthcare and it largely is ignored or glanced over in the midst of the hubbub that trump can cause literally by sending a tweet out at 11:30 at night. so uniquely new phenomenon to this world. trump is rewriting lots of rules at the moment. he might not continue but based on everything i knew about politics i never thought he'd even get to the point he's gotten to today. >> and on the other side of the divide, what is it that democrats need to do or should do on this particular issue? should they leave that discussion for the republicans? should they weight in and have their own policy perspectives do
1:14 pm
you think? >> i think here they need to stay on the side lines but more importantly they cannot underestimate donald trump. i think that is one of the biggest problems that the rnc is dealing with right now. that they have -- oh trump he's a clown. he's not going to run. and if he runs he's not going to get traction. and look where we are today. let's say he wins the nomination. anything is possible. i agree with chris. he's rewritten everything i know about politics. so let's say he makes it into the general election. the democrats cannot assume that they have a lock on the election. because one thing that we have been seeing in some of this polling is the attraction to the independents. that is the key. >> can i just add quickly, if donald trump gets the nomination he has completely rewritten the rules. because for example if you focus on how barack obama won the last two elections he got the majority of the vote of women, of latinos, african americans. if donald trump really gets 60%
1:15 pm
of the women's vote, that means that democrats probably can no longer rely necessarily on the african american vote and on the latino vote because we're seeing something very, very different in american politics. >> and we're going to have to leave it there. thank you very much. coming up a second bombing in as many kays in bangkok and knew man hunt is under way for a suspect captured on video. we'll get an update from the ground. and for the first time in nearly a decade active military personnel have been called into the battle against wild fires out west. we'll take look at one of the largest wild fires. and hillary clinton is in las vegas after trying to reassure supporting saying no bedwetting over the e-mail controversy. we just got news from the fbi and clinton just came out against one of president obama's policies. what happens now? we're right back stay with us.

and travel journalist christopher p. baker who wrote "moon cuba". a lot of folks are excited about this. let me start with what does this news mean for average americans who want to travel to cuba? >> well it is going to open the possibility for everybody to go. currently only 12 categories of people can go. i am all in favor of lifting those travel restrictions. not least because one of the intents is to support private enterprise in cuba. half a million people in cuba are involved in private enterprise and most of those are related to tourism. we have the ability to rapidly increase the standard of living of cubans. there is one other point i want to make too and that is that there is a constitutional right to travel for americans. and i think it is disingenuous to point the finger another cuba and talk about restrictions in cuba whilst the u.s. government itself restrains americans from going to cuba without permission. >> in between the actual lifting of the restrictions and now what is the best way to do it if i

wanted to travel to cuba right now? >> currently i think the best option you have, which is the only route that any u.s. citizen can use is to go with a tour group under what's called a people to people category. i for example lead custom tour, photography, motorcycling trips and other tours to cuba. that is the only way they can do it. people to people. >> and from a cuban perspective, is cuba ready for this? do you think they have the accommodations? hotel rooms, and even the infrastructure to handle such a huge spike in the people that could be coming over. >> well they currently get three million tourists and the place is almost running at capacity right now. they certainly face a big problem. they have got to rapidly increase their hotel capacity. that is for sure. >> and a lot of my friends always say this to me. which is they are worried that with the easing of restrictions and sanction, mcdonald's is going to go thein there. cuba's charm and history is going change. what do you think cuba is going to look like in ten years?
1:59 pm
and is this the time the to go now? or cuba is going to resist the presence of big american corporations. >> great point. now is the time to go. i've seen more change in havana especially in the last three years than two prior years traveling to cuba. much more money in the system. change is happening. more modern cars. the old american cars may be gone in ten years. and of course i think by then the u.s. embargo will be history. u.s. corporations will be there. i will not be happy to see mcdonald's there but there is certainly room for marriott, four seasons, etc. >> i like how you threw that in. i guess we know you're a luxury traveler then. after the deal was struck, fiddle castro's daughter said this. people of cuba don't want to return to capitalism. >> all cubans love what is going on. there is a tremendous affection and affinity going back more than a century between americans and cubans.
