former president jimmy carter revealed lease behe's been diag with melanoma of the brain. these were carter's first public comments since releasing a written statement last week saying cancer had been found in his liver and that the cancer had spread to other parts of his body. at that news conference that wrapped up minutes ago at the caer center in atlanta, the former president was asked what his reaction was when doctors first gave him the diagnosis. >> i just thought i had a few weeks left. but i was surprisingly at ease. i've had a wonderful life. i've had thousands of friends and i've had an exciting and adventurous, gratifying existence. so i was surprisingly at ease, much more so than my wife was. but now i feel it's in the hands

of god whom i worship and i'll be prepared for anything that comes. >> carter says he will continue to receive radiation treatments over the coming weeks and that he plans to cut back on his work at the carter center. we'll have more of what he said today. but we have more coming up on the breaking news out of washington state where three firefighters have died battles an explosive wildfire in that state. the u.s. forest service says the crew got into an accident in their vehicle right outside the town of twisp and it appears the fire overtook them. the entire town has been evacuated. with more than 100 wildfires burning across the west, the national weather service is warning of critical fire conditions today with heavy winds and above-average temperatures expected through tomorrow. nbc's leanne gregg joins us. let's talk about what happened with these firefighters and what we've learned about this

accident. >> reporter: tamron, the firefighters were among the official responders to a small fire that broke out, about 50 acres, a new fire west of the town of twisp. that was midday yesterday. but because of the strong winds, it grew very dramatically and it was erratic. the fire turned on them and overcame them after they had a vehicle accident. four other firefighters were injured. one of them is in critical condition this morning with severe burns at a local hospital. and it's unclear right now whether they were in the vehicle or whether it was a separate accident. president obama did issue a statement saying that on behalf of a grateful nation, the president's thoughts and prayers are with the families of these brave americans. and they are back on the lines today, very dangerous conditions, once again, during the morning fire briefing, one official described the fire as the sleeping giant that will awaken. and that will happen today at about midday, he said.

that's when the winds will begin to kick up again, even stronger than they were yesterday. another called it an epic wind event day, looking for sustained winds up to 40 to 45 miles an hour, barreling down the canyon. once again, it's expected to be extremely unpredictable. and erratic. so this morning, they have about four hours to accomplish as much as they can. they're working on containing the lines. they're doing some air drops before things become too dangerous for them to accomplish much. so another very difficult and challenging and wild day as they fight the fires. >> incredible. thank you very much, leanne. turning now to politics and the war of words heating up between jeb bush and donald trump. the two faced off in dueling town hall meetings last night in new hampshire, meeting with voters at the exact same time in venues just 20 minutes apart. both men wasted no time going after each other.

>> right down the road, we have jeb. very small crowd. >> we'll never win if we're appealing to people's anger each and every day. >> jeb bush is a low-energy person. for him to get things done is hard. he's very low energy. >> mr. trump doesn't have a proven conservative record. he was a democrat longer in the last decade than he was a republican. he's given more money to democrats than he's given to republicans. >> have i gotten under jeb bush's skin? i don't know. i will tell you this -- you mention the word skin, he said the other day one of the dumber things i've ever heard in politics when talking about iraq. that we, the united states, he said, have to show them that we have skin in the game. in order to go into iraq. we've lost $2 trillion, thousands of lives, wounded warriors who i love all over the place and he's talking about we

have to show them that we have skin in the game? >> even on immigration where it's -- look, the language is pretty vitriolic, for sure. but hundreds of billions of dollars of cost to implement his plans is not a conservative plan. why don't we support -- this is going to be my pitch -- let's support someone who you don't have to guess where he stands because he's consistent. >> meanwhile, bush and trump weren't the only candidates stumping in the granite state. scott walker is also there. and with polls showing he's losing ground, his campaign is paying even more attention to donald trump. as "the new york times" notes this morning, he's adopting a trump-like stance. and "the washington post" says he's shifting to a more aggressive stance, seeking to tap into the anti-establishment fervor fueling trump's rise. also setting his sights on trump this morning is rick santorum unveiling his own strict policy proposals on immigration.

donald trump was asked about the increasing number of candidates looking to take him on. >> so far, to me it's been very interesting, lindsey graham was at 1%. and he attacked me viciously and he went down to zero. i don't know how you get to zero. and perry attacked me very strongly. and he went from 4% down to 2%. looks like he's going to be out of the race. that's really the ultimate compliment when you get attacked and people go down. they got tremendous airtime in the attacks. it's a compliment. >> trump is featured on the cover of this week's "time" magazine unveiled this morning with the words "deal with it." joining me now, "time" magazine political reporter zeke miller. thanks for joining us. >> thank you for having me. >> there are so many highlights to this expose, if you will, on donald trump, with the image of him on the cover of "time" magazine. on chris christie he said, if i was governor of new jersey, the george washington bridge would

not have been shut. you talk about temperament, on hillary clinton, she's going through something he compared to watergate. the only hope is that the prosecutors are democrat. on wealthy donors, hitting on both tidsides with this one, it funny, in my opinion. now they'll all support me if i want them to, but i don't want them to. he's hitting the republicans, he's hitting the democrats and hitting home to middle america who believes all the politicians in d.c. are bought. >> exactly. donald trump's argument here is he's authentic, he is who he was on tv on nbc on "the apprentice" as a businessman, as a real estate developer, that he is today who he was yesterday as a personality and that other politicians are poll-driven, listen to their consultants, change their message depending on the day and now hear scott walker doing that is fueling trump's argument there. and he told us that the rest of the politicians are phony, are fake.

and that's kind of interesting because that's what a lot of americans think. you look at 2014 republicans took back congress saying they were going to repeal obamacare and they didn't. that was the promise they made to their voters and their voters don't like the affordable care ak and they're angry it hasn't been repealed yet despite the promises of the people they elected. that's that anger and frustration that donald trump is tapping into. and his argument is, if i make you a promise, i'll follow through on it. that's resonating right now with republican voters. >> have the angry messages resonating but then the theater of it all from the "time" cover where he's posed with a real bald eagle, which is samd uncle sam, to his campaign saying on friday. he's moving his event in alabama from a smaller venue, the mobile civic center, to a much larger venue, a football stadium holding 40,000 people potentially. we don't know if 40,000 people will show up. but combined with the new

hampshire turnout, the magazine with the bald eagle to a football stadium in the south where donald trump will come in with rock music and all, this is the angry message meets someone who is incredibly larger than life. >> exactly. and donald trump right here has taken the rules of politics and thrown them out the window. don't wear funny hat, don't pose with live animals. don't take on the media, don't hold these big rallies and raise your expectations so early. he's thrown that out the window and running the campaign he wants to run. his celebrity is integral to who he is, always has been. and that's why people vote for him, if he went to do something understated, he would lose his supporters. he needs almost that shock factor, that wow factor. that's what gets him the attention and that attention is what drives his poll numbers. >> to your point, my colleague just said this morning, you had people showing up in iowa debating what plaid shirt to wear. donald trump arrives in a

helicopter. with that said at the beginning of the week, he had this interview on "meet the press" with chuck todd and many thought, this is a chance to press donald trump him on these huge platforms he continues to talk about and his polling continues to rise even with his controversial ideas. i want to play what he talked with you about with regard to immigration. >> before i even start the wall up, i'll get the badz ones out. we've got some really bad dudes in this country. they're gang members in baltimore. gang members in chicago. and they're very bad people and we're going to get them out because i can do that the first day. >> just talking about the hardworking, peaceful undocumented immigrants here -- >> illegal immigrants. you know the word illegal. >> the illegal immigrants -- >> they go out and we'll have a system if they're expedite, they'll come back in.

they'll come back in legally. >> do you forcibly remove them? if they say, i'm not going -- >> it will all work out. it's called management. politicians can't manage. all they do is talk. >> that answer speaks to the entire article that you wrote regarding "deal with it." that is donald trump in a nutshell, deal with it. >> exactly. that answer on immigration is revealing because if you do try to challenge donald trump on the substance, ultimately there's not a lot there. you end up with, it comes down to management or leadership or some other buzzword phrase that voters want to hear. part of running for president, one of the more revealing questions is, he's really rich and his supporters actually aren't. but there's an element of aspirational -- that he thinks that, if i get off my 757, i take my helicopter to the state fair, people look at that and say, i want that, i understand that, i want that in my president, i don't want people who look like me. i don't want people who talk

like me. i want something different. i want something like trump. >> zeke, thanks for joining us. we're getting our first read this morning at the e-mails -- or first look at the e-mails that sparked the fbi's investigation into hillary clinton's use of a personal e-mail server while secretary of state. two e-mails were identified and one was sent to clinton in november 2012 regarding possible arrests in benghazi. the second was sent to clinton by her close aide detailing deteriorating conditions in benghazi with the fbi specifically looking into whether any classified information was mishandled, clinton insisted no e-mails were marked classified at the time they were sent. clinton's communications director, jen palmieri, acknowledged the former secretary of state would have done things differently in retrospect. >> i have encountered this a lot in politics where people think the answer is a lot more complicated than it really is. she's answered this many times.

she did have her own e-mail account. others had done it before. and it was just more convenient and she kept it like that. and she didn't really -- that's the thing. she didn't really think it through and she has said had she, she would have done it differently. >> joining me now, politico white house reporter josh girstein. she has a great article up, the ten e-mail questions still lingering regarding hillary clinton's scandal here. she's insisted that she did not send or receive classified messages. the two e-mails that we're finally getting a glimpse of now, does this help or hurt the case at this point? >> well, certainly her campaign thinks it helps their case because these are e-mails that already came out in batches that were released publicly by the state department. and they clearly didn't have any markings on them at the time that said they were classified. in fact, one of them explicitly has an abbreviation on it which means sensitive but unclassified. her position is, and even the position of her top aides,

people like huma abedin, it was marked as unclassified or ordinary e-mails and they had no way to know they weren't supposed to be handling this on her private system. and it shouldn't have been on the unclassified system at the state department if indeed it really was classified. >> that's some of what her campaign is pointing out, these flaws in the system, if you will, in the state department that may have led to not obviously her having a private server in her home but for this miscommunication or whatever it chooses to be described regarding what's classified and what's not. >> right. this is an interesting turn in the clinton campaign strategy, they're really taking on something that journalists, historian, researchers have been saying for a long time that the federal government's classification system is broken, that it's also often incoherent. sometimes one agency will say this is top secret and another saez, let's release it. they pointed to an example of a document the state department withheld from a group here in

washington the other day with a very, very large chunk cut out of it, a 40-year-old document and they found it was already ant state department's website completely unredacted. so they've said it's a ridiculous thing to conduct an investigation about. >> josh, thank you so much for your time. greatly appreciate it. now back to the breaking news involving former president jimmy carter who revealed in the last hour that he's been dr diagnosed with melanoma. nbc's sarah dallof is in atlanta with more and as mentioned at the top of the hour, the former president says he will start treatment this afternoon. >> reporter: that is correct, tamron. former president carter laid out personal details of his diagnosis and his treatment at the press conference today revealing that four spots of melanoma have been found on his brain. he will receive four rounds of radiation as well as an immune system-boosting drug in the coming weeks. he says he will cut back on some

of his work here at the carter center. and he also may skip a planned humanitarian trip to nepal that was set for november. he says he doesn't want to delay his last round of treatment which would coincide with that trip. he spoke very candidly about his emotions surrounding his diagnosis. he says he has completely confidence in his medical team. he said he's lived a good life and is ready for his next adventure. he took the time to thank well-wishers including the obamas, the bushes, the clintons, secretary of state john kerry joking at one point it was the first time in a long time he's heard from some of those folks. so some light-hearted moments amid some very heavy news here today at the carter center. >> and obviously our thoughts and prayers are with mr. carter and his family. the ongoing trial centered around a prestigious prep school enters its third day. the student who says she was

student of sexual assault at an elite prep school was back on the stand today being cross-examined by the defense. the alleged victim has been giving emotionally and disturbing testimony over the past two days about what she says happened between her and owen lebree back in may of 2014. prosecutors say it was part of a school tradition called the senior salute where older students ask out younger ones just before graduation. the accuser testified when she agreed to meet him, she expected only kissing but he went too far even though she said no three tichlz. the defense argues e-mails and messages sent back and forth between the two the night of the incident shows she was a willing participant and that's something the prosecution confronted head-on yesterday. nbc news is not showing the accuser's face and we are disguising her voice.

>> when he says that you're a gem, how do you respond? >> i was just saying it as a generic response to what he just said to me. i was trying to match everything up because i didn't want to show any weakness to him. >> the defendant has pleaded not guilty to the charges. with me is the spokeswoman for the accuser's family. she just spoke with the young lady who just got off the stand moments ago. laura, thank you for joining us. >> thanks for having me on. >> as i pointed out, the clip we show, that was the prosecutor asking the alleged victim about her interaction with the suspect after she says that special sexually assaulted. it seems their strategy is, let her explain her thinking before and after this alleged attack. how did she feel following her testimony? how did she feel things went?

>> well, she's been on the stand 2 1/2 days now. the first two days as you mentioned was with the prosecutor. but she just finished the cross-examination with the defense. during direct, she was able to explain a lot of victims go through trauma because of a sexual assault and afterwards they don't know how to think about it, how to react and it takes a while to process. she did a great job making that clear that this was a violent attack, that it took a while to process but she knew it was wrong and decided to speak up and to seek this case. and today after coming off the defense, the first thing she said is, i can now say i'm a survivor. she feels proud she stood up for herself and is thankful she's going through this process regardless of the outcome because she gets to speak out against what happened to her. >> i saw you recently talk with my colleague, savannah guthrie, over at the "today" show. and you talked about the family experienced really a backlash f of sorts that people in these small communities pointed out this is one of the most elite schools in the country, have felt the need to take sides here

even as this plays out in the courts. >> yes, there's definitely been issues from the very start when she first reported what happened. there wasn't a lot of support at the immediate school in the community, the family has left that area. she's no longer at that school. they have found support. there's a lot of advocacy organization, the new hampshire coalition here and a lot of other survivors have rallied around them and their pham family at this time. but they faced a lot of retaliation. but at this point, they know they are doing it for a reason. they're in court seeking justice. and they didn't just do it for themselves. it's not just because this victim was harmed. they know that sexual violence is happening everywhere across this country and they want to show others you can speak out, you can take matters into your own hand and report this crime. >> back to what we watched play out in court here, the heavy focus being on these e-mails and text messages in which we played -- the defendant described the young alleged victim as an angel.

she said to him, you're quite an angel yourself, keep the upcoming events to yourself regarding what had happened. are you concerned that people and perhaps even some jurors will go back to the hold adage of blaming the victim here? when you have people who question, why did she continue to talk to him or why didn't she do this rather than taking a closer look at perhaps his actions and the allegations and even the school and what it knew about the senior salute? >> yeah, i think that's one of the many attacks is doing, putting the blame on the victim. but she knows even though she was traumatized and didn't know how to react at first, that that is common, a lot of survivors freeze in the moment. a lot of survivors don't know how to explain what's happened to them, let alone a 15-year-old girl who's never had a sexual experience before. she feels very confident in explaining herself. we'll see what the jury takes

away it from. i think there's been more awareness in recent years that victims do have a hard time coming forward. it's hard to process. and i think she did a great job with the prosecution explaining that. so we will have to see what the outcome is. but i know that she's walking away with her head held high and proud that she was able to stand this test. it really is a test to be on the stand for 2 1/2 days and face all these questions. >> i should point out the defense says that this was a willing act and that she was a willing participant and as you pointed out, this is all playing out in the courts right now. we'll see what the jury ultimately decides here. thank you for your time, laura. >> thanks for having me on and letting the victim speak out. up next, the latest on where jared fogle is this morning as he awaits his next court appearance on child sex and pornography charges. and dramatic video of a gas explosion destroying part of a motel in washington state.

former subway spokesperson jared fogle has been confined to his home with a leg monitor until his next court appearance on child sex and pornography charges. that appearance could be months away. according to the u.s. attorney's office, at that point, a judge will decide whether to accept fogle's guilty plea and determine his sentence. this as more shocking details are coming out about the allegations against him. according to federal indictment papers, fogle traveled to new york city at least twice between 2010 and 2013 seeking sex with minors. he stayed at luxury hotels and paid for sex acts with girls he knew to be 16. he also told one of the girls he would, quote, make it worth her while if she would find him a girl even younger than herself, writing in a text message, quote, the younger, the better. the details have brought new

attention on the issue of child sex trafficking. according to unicef, 1.2 million children are trafficked worldwide each year and many of these children are forced to become sex workers. and joining me now is opel singleton, president and ceo of million kids, an organization formed to combat human trafficking in the u.s. and internationally. opel, thank you so much for your time. >> thank you so much for having me. i really appreciate it. >> of course. in the course of reporting this story with jared fogle, it was reported a number of times that he had had sex with, quote, underage prostitutes and a number of advocates for children like yourself took great issue with this and really wanted to educate the public that these children in almost all of these cases have been forced into this. these are children who have been exploited and are being trafficked. they're not adults making decisions and thus referring to them as underage prostitutes is minimizing what's really happening to these children. >> absolutely.

this is kind of a unique phenomena that is going on. partly because of the internet and partly because of the growth of pornography. i'm not surprised when i read this story with jared and child pornography. quite frankly, i would be surprised there aren't more celebrities in the future because they start with child pornography which was the case in this case as he developed a relationship with russell taylor. one of the things that happens first of all with child pornography has to do with the fact that they often associate themselves with children. and of course that is what both of them did here with his foundation. on top of it, these are people who kind of prey on children and believe that they have a right to do that. i would guess that if you talk to jared maybe six months ago, he would not have seen himself as a predator or a pedophile. but think of this, one of the things that tells you how

addictive this is is that jared continued on even after russell taylor was arrested. and he is out, as you said, he's getting prostitutes to solicit for him other young children. that is, in fact, sex trafficking. it will be interesting to watch these charges and see what he's actually charged with. it started with pornography. it became prolific. he's very addicted and it progresses and then it's advanced into acting out. >> as it's pointed out already, jared fogle will pay the 14 victims, $100,000 each to help them with medical treatment and counseling and education. his attorney said he's volunteered to make restitution to those individuals and he knows it can't undo the damage that he's done but would do all in his power to try to make it right. his attorney also spoke of an illness with jared fogle. i think sometimes it is also easy for people to say, well, these victims will now get

$100,000 each. he made $15 million and somehow this pain magically goes away. >> it never goes away. think about this. if you're a young girl, you've been violated, it changes your self-image. it changes your attitude towards self-worth. it will change you for the rest of your life. there's not enough money to compensate for that. they need counseling. they need interception here to be able to do this. but the fact that he was a celebrity and he took advantage of that celebrity is really an issue. and it greatly diminishes the victim and the role that they have in this. so there are several issues going on here where he is addicted. that's the medical condition they're talking about. child pornography is, in fact, addictive and it is also progressive. you continue to act out and you begin to seek out people.

and it really is interesting how so much of this is taking place on the internet. one of the things that happens here is so many kids now put their photos out on the internet thinking that it's private. maybe they send a nude photo to a boyfriend and then they get intercepted and end up on these porn rings. so teenagers are highly at risk there and that's one of the things that we really need to teach our young people, never, ever put a photo on the internet because you can't get it back. >> this case is certainly, as you pointed out, opening up a number of conversations to be had as we await the sentencing of jared fogle thank you so much for your time, opal. >> thank you. coming up, will iran be allowed to inspect its own military site? new details emerge of a so-called secret side deal with iran and does that put the president's historic deal in jeopardy? it's part of this morning's first read in publics. no one burns on my watch!

we are back with your first read on politics this morning. has the white house run into another setback on the iran nuclear deal? after two key democratic senators say they won't support the deal, the white house is having to clarify reports that iran would be inspecting itself. plus, jeb bush has supported comprehensive immigration reform in the past. why is he now using what many see as a loaded phrase, anchor babies? and why our team says the gop immigration debate is awkward for senator marco rubio. also, as ben carson rises in the polls, he now says he's open to using drone strikes to police the border. joining me live, marc murray. let's talk about the iran deal and this report that iran will inspect itself at its most sensitive known military complex to clear up suspicion of past

military activity. >> politically yesterday's report that came first from the "associated press" was a bad day for the white house in which they had been kind of racking up endorsements from democratic senators in the past. but it is worth noting that the iaea chief ended up coming out with a statement earlier today saying that it was actually incorrect that the a.p. suggests that iran would be checking itself. that the iaea would be using the same type of procedures it always does. what's tricky about this is these are confidential agreements that have been made. so people can pick and choose what they want to see. but all the nuclear experts have said this is more standard operating procedure than something that allows iran to police themselves. >> moving back to presidential political, i want to play what jeb bush told bill bennett about immigration. let's play it. actually, i have a quote from

has pointed out why this debate over the 14th amendment brought up again by donald trump is awkward for marco rubio. >> we were able to confirm with the rubio campaign that neither of marco rubio's parents were u.s. citizens at the time that he was born in the united states in 1971. if you take the logic of the entire debate to end birthright citizenship that people whose parents weren't u.s. citizens and their children should not be u.s. citizens if they're born here, people can end up saying, do you mean someone like marco rubio or even bobby jindal shouldn't be u.s. citizens and shouldn't be eligible to run for the presidency? it's enshrined in the 14th amendment, some of these efforts to end birthright citizenship would require a constitutional amendment to be able to pull out. but it just shows you how this birthright citizenship has become very awkward for the republican party and some of the republicans in favor of it. >> and ben carson now upping his

former prison escapee david sweat returned to court this morning. that tops our look at stories around the "news nation." sweat was arraigned on three felony counts relating to his big escape from an upstate new york prison back in june. he'll return to court next month. sweat was captured by law enforcement after 22 days on the run. just this hour, danny became the first hurricane of the atlantic season. the category 1 storm has winds of 75 miles per hour and is expected to get stronger in the next couple of days. we'll keep an eye on it. forecasters say it is too early to tell if danny will reach the continental u.s. nine people arrested in st. louis last night following the deadly police shooting of an 18-year-old man. police say he was shot when he point add gun at officers. nearly 150 protesters gathered near that scene shortly after the shooting with some throwing glass bottles and bricks, according to officers. police deployed teargas to break up the protest.

government. though a member of parliament says her address was stolen and used without her knowledge. online a lot of angry reaction. i hope everyone gets what's coming to them, wrote one. but also this, cheating is wrong, but also hacking personal information is wrong. already some have asked cyber security pros for help. >> i've had people actually confess to me that they have, you know, these various, well, fetishes, i guess, and that the concern that their information is going to be found and that in some cases, maybe even their spouse will find out about it. >> reporter: the hackers claim their mission is to shame ashley madison and customers. in a statement the parent company says we will not sit addressly by and allow these thieves to force their personal ideology citizens around the world. in the past a company has set up to believe somebody who had a
