1:00 pm
massive man hunt continues in illinois. the search continues. >> i'm not going to set a time limit on this. i have a murdered colleague, police officer. and we're not going to stop. >> will he or won't he? >> vice president joe biden just finished speaking in miami. his first major address since speculations starting swirling over a 2016 bid. >> people believe that there is an american promise. there is an american dream. the problem is and a lot of neighborhoods around this country today, parents don't have the confidence to look their child in the eye and say honey, everything is going to be all right. >> we'll tell you why he could make his decision on a white
1:01 pm
house run just eight days from now. >> and sealing the deal, as president obama finish his alaska adventure he picks up a major victory in washington. right now there are enough senators supporting the deal with iran to ensure it cannot be blocked. we start with breaking news. the already massive man hunt for three accused cop killers in illinois has expanded. hundreds have been searching for more than 30 hours now, in the air and on the ground and door to door. right now multiple law enforcement agencies are conducting so called "saturation patrols" in the town of fox lake, illinois. in a press conference this afternoon investigators revealed an autopsy was conducted and they are now reviewing surveillance video from the area. >> we've been following up on leads since yesterday, throughout last night and still continue following up on leads.
1:02 pm
we have a lot of social media leads coming in. the community has been fantastic in phoning in tips and leads. we're going through a lot of data and a lot of information. >> more than 400 local, state and federal officers are involved, along with at least 48 police dogs, we're told. residents in the town of 10,000 are being asked to stay indoors. at least seven schools are closed today after lockdowns yesterday. and again police say they are looking for two white men and one black men. meanwhile as the search continues there, a community is in mourning. fox lake police lieutenant charles gliniewicz as the 30 year veteran, married with four sons, two of those active duty military. he was a youth mentor and also an active duty army veteran. he was set to retire at the end of the month. joining me is my panel.
1:03 pm
adam, let me start with you on the scene. are they any closer to finding these guys? >> it doesn't appear that way, craig. they have a hundred investigators focused on this show. canvassing the area, looking at leads, tips and also social media. that is also a big part of this. any one tip they say could be a huge break. even a small one. right now as you mention, craig, two white men, one black men. that is all they have and that is all they are telling us they have. they are looking at forensics on the scene. any dna that might have been left on the crime scene, any dna on the officer's body that might have rubbed off. videos from businesses, and residents. and eye witnesses, of course. did anybody see them coming or going from this december late area where the officer went to pursue them. they want to know where they are and who they are. they still don't know who they are looking for. but they say that is not
1:04 pm
unusual. they have had many cases where they start out not knowing who they are. they just need one piece of the puzzle. craig? >> do we think that the suspects are still in that area? >> it is really not clear. they could have made it out of the area. there is a number of ways they could have driven out of area. there is a commuter railroad that goes right through this town. there is also a number of lakes. they call it the chain of lakes. there are nine likes. they could have made off in a boat. yesterday we saw this massive man hunt. one of the things officials were using were boats. they were using boats, atvs, heavily armored vehicles. so it is not clear whether they are in this area or not. they did say there have been no carjackings, no reported cars stolen. it is not clear. they could be here. they could be anywhere. >> stand by adam. i want to bring in jim cavanaugh. jim, i want to play a piece of whether the task force commander had to say about this idea of surveillance video and we'll talk about it on the other side. here it is. >> there is video throughout the
1:05 pm
area, as you know. it is pretty common now days not only for businesses but for private residences to have fair sophisticated video systems. so we've been canvassing throughout the area in trying to identify specific locations and collect that video. >> how would that change this case, jim? >> well it would be big. if they could lock down video on the road to the cement plant during the particular hours just before the murder of the lieutenant they might be able to get a series of vehicles passing by the surveillance video of a business or residence or multimillion security cameras. and through process of elimination -- remember this is a small community and right now the public is on your side. and you can leverage that and you can go back and say anybody that was on that highway from 10:00 p.m. last night until, you know, one hour last the -- when the lieutenant was murdered. we want you o the call us. come in, talk to us.
1:06 pm
you are a witness. we want to know with tif you wee on that road what car you were driving, were you on your way to work. and if they can get down -- this is the advantage of working rural areas -- and maybe have a car they can't identify and work back from there. also like adam reported and he was very clear in an excellent report. from the crime scene, the dna, fingerprints. you know. and then of course you move loo electronics, what cell phones are used in the area. they will be working all those things. we still don't know if the lieutenant was shot with a gun the killers had or his own gun. if he was shot by o a gun of the killers that information can be put in the national system. there are all ways to try to get a break there and force a lead to give you a break. >> jim, i don't know if you had the opportunity to actually will
1:07 pm
be to t-- listen to. the news conference. it seems law enforcement doesn't know who these guys are. how believable is that? >> he may not be sure. the commander did a good job but he has to make his decisions with staff and agencies what they are going to let out as they move forward. and the way they do it and we did successfully in many cases we decided a few things that we would not let out that were sacred. we and only the killers would know. others we would if there were to our advantage to apprehend them. >> why would you not let out some of those things you consider sickry sangt. if you have three cop killers on the loose, why not put it all out there. >> sometimes you get people come in confessing and they debaidn'o it. and you can eliminate them. in a bombing case we had just like that. a guy came in and confessed to the bombing and we asked what
1:08 pm
the bomb was like and of course he didn't do it. it was a fake confession. and we knew. so there are some important things. also you have three actors here so you want to be able to put some things against the other and verify whether the statements are true and there may be other search warrant issues but not to say that every last fact should be held. just as one example, if they used another gun to kill the lieutenant. they know they had another gun. they know what the gun is. so at some point that may not be something you want to hide. you want to say look they had a 40 millimeter pistol or whatever and if you know anyone that had one like that or this make. they already know they have the gun. so you have to decide carefully. right now they have i'm sure a list of crew, they have tips from fugitive task forces around the region, escaped prisoners. they are looking at some people on robbery crews. the key is if they will search that area again, they might be able to find out what those guys were doing there.
1:09 pm
were they digging a hole? about to hide something? were they hiding something? digging something up? it could be money, it could be drugs, it could be a body, it could be guns. or they could have been casing or wanting to leave a car there for a getaway. something was going on and if they can help find out what that was, it might move the case along as well. >> adam, i understand that we also now have a clearer picture of the time line yesterday. walk us through thif you can. >> the commander gave us a timeline from yesterday morning, when he was on what was routine patrol. 7, 7:52 spots three suspicious individuals. 7:55 radios for back up. 8:01 back up arrives and his body is found about 50 freet from his car minus his gun and there was some suggestion he was missing his pepper spray.
1:10 pm
it is unclear if he took the entire belt. we just don't know. >> jim, anything that can be gleaned from that timeline? is there anything that screams at you from that timeline? >> yeah what screams at me is there are more than enough time from the time that lieutenant asks for the backup at 7:55 to the back up find them at 8:05 is more than enough to get to your car and get in it and drive away before the back up is found. the back up arrived pretty quick. and they might have been passing responding officers driving away. a couple of them ducking down in the car and getting away. so there is more than enough time to slip out of there and they could have been watching the news coverage for two days. but i think the key craig is get something there that you can identify, dna or fingerprints or ballistics and tie them back to the murders. i believe they will come up with their identities, but they are going to need that or video surveillance evidence.
1:11 pm
>> something. >> yeah. and they got lot of investigators there. illinois state police, lake county sheriffs. they have enough people. they are going to root it out. >> they have flooded the zone for sure in northern illinois im. jim cavanaugh. thank you for your time and adam reiss as well and fox lake on the ground for us this wednesday afternoon. for more a fox lake resident i want to bring in. jason was one of the folks unable to get home with his six-year-old daughter while police patrolled his neighborhood tuesday. walk us through what happened yesterday. and what did you think when you first saw officers in your quiet neighborhood? >> well i didn't notice at first. i got a text from my mom about 9:30 saying that fox lake was on lockdown. and then i looked out my window and i saw a couple of officers at the entrance of my subdivision patrolling. firearms out and everything.
1:12 pm
>> what about today? are they still patrolling your neighborhood? have you had an officer knock on your door to assure you and your family that everything is okay or to ask any questions? >> i've seen a couple of police squad cars come through. but no knocking on doors or anything. or looking through bushes and stuff. >> how did -- how did you explain what had happened to your daughter? or did you? >> umm, she's six yeersd old right now and she still really doesn't know what's going on. but i explained to her, you know, there are bad people out there in the world. and you know, i just told her you have to be safe and know your surrounds and just be careful. coming up. moments ago vice president joe
1:13 pm
biden gave a speech in the key primary state of florida. is she closer to a 2016 bid and we'll take a look at why dick cheney said biden should get involved. and a baltimore judge denied a motion to dismiss this case. so what happens now? and congress will not be able to block president obama's nuclear deal with iran, or so it seems. the deal now has enough support to ensure it is enacted. can you spot the difference? the wind farm on the right was created using digital models and real world location-based specs that taught it how to follow the wind. so while the ones on the left are waiting, the ones on the right are pulling power out of thin air. pretty impressive, huh? now, two things that are exactly the same have have never been more different. ge software. get connected. get insights. get optimized.
1:14 pm
1:15 pm
1:16 pm
with speculation about him entering the 2016 race already in overdrive, vice president joe biden today headed to the battle ground state of florida, testing the political waters with a speech about college affo
1:17 pm
affordability and the economy in miami. it was his first high profile public appearance since the obama-biden white house started. bide listen also n will also be private fundraiser for democrats this evening. culminating with an appearance on the late show with stephen colbert next thursday here in new york city. and the all comes on word that the draft biden super pac is keying up in the state of south carolina. joined by my panel. joy, let me start with you on the ground there. this is a little more of what joe biden had to say a short time ago. take a listen. >> the middle class in america is no longer the wealthiest
1:18 pm
middle class in the world. we can't let that stand. and by the way let me be very clear what i mean by middle class. i have a lot of really bright economists work for me in the administration. some of the best in the world. when asked about middle class, they will say well is that 51,800 or 52,600 -- it is not a number. it is a value set. >> joy, what are focus on the ground saying. >> it was classic joe biden in a lot of ways. that is the core sort of the biden message talking about middle class and relating to the average joe. i think just listening to joe biden over a period of time, he wasn't the sort of same -- he wasn't as up baeet i guess as yu typically hear wide biden say.
1:19 pm
i didn't necessarily hear a presidential candidate up there. and you have to remember that biden is doing double duty. he is on a mission from the administration even though they did secure the votes as far as the iran deal, they want the full 41 democrats on the record. and they are pushing back on other groups still working other democratic members trying to deny them that vote. he's on multiple duties here. >> john u while he's there in florida and the palmetto state and south carolina there, word earlier today they are beefing up a draft biden super pac, staffing up a bit. can joe biden realistically get in the game this late? >> well that is the big question, craig. i think he can. but he's got the make his decision pretty quickly. hillary clinton has got a huge organization a lot of money and bernie sanders has a lot of passion on his side. joe biden, there is an opportunity for joe biden to
1:20 pm
run. because hillary clinton is starting to really seriously leak some energy out of her campaign. but he's got to jump in with both feet. it might not have sounded to joey like a campaign speech. but in the snippets it kind of did and he's talking about declining middle class which really kind of happened in the last ten years so he's got to explain as he's campaigns. >> one person who wants him in the race, fellow named dick chen cheney. take a listen to what he said this morning on morning joe. >> i think it is good for the kmoktic party. they need more choices. they are far short of candidates compared to us. we've got a lot of candidates. i'd love to see joe run. my attitude is go for it. >> who would you rather see republicans up against next fall? >> i think that is a good question. depends how hillary does the next couple of months. my own opinion is i think joe biden would be an easier candidate to beat.
1:21 pm
that said hillary is not looking that strong. the easiest candidate for us to beat would be bernie sanders so i've been kind of rooting for bernie to run and run hard. >> what is primarily running this biden speculation. is it hillary's e-mail problems? is it sagging poll numbers? is it the media? is it biden himself? is it a combination of all of the aforementioned? >> well i mean i think part of it, just talking with people who are real obama democrats. people who got on board with the obama campaign going back to 2008, is that there is a core of obama democrats. particularly in the political operative world who just have great affection for joe biden and feel he would be a more direct champion for barack obama's legacy if her were to be the president. and there are a lot of staffers out there, the steve shales of the world, some of the people you are seeing sign on in south carolina, they just have affection for the guy and may
1:22 pm
not be as passionate about hillary clinton quite frankly. if there is a deficit on the democratic side. there are people who want bernie sanders and there are people who just want something else. and joe biden is giving them that opportunity. i get a sense i when i talk to people that the core of those biden support are really obama people who go back to '08 and then a lot of younger democratic staffers who go back to 2012 but who just have great affection for joe biden himself. >> let's turn to the republican race here. donald trump, jeb bush continue to spar. the attacks also seem to be getting more personal as well. after releasing a blistering attack ad questioning trump u trump's record as the conservative. ed to the busch teh team hammer home the which trump are you --. appearing on good morning america today trump did not seem all that fazed by his rivals newfound combativeness. >> well i think he had really no
1:23 pm
choice. he's doing very poorly in the polls. he's a very low energy kind of guy and they had to do something. so they are spending a lot of ads. he really had no choice i think. he had to go out with an ad. he did a very kmpsive ad. and let's see what happens. so far everyone who's attacked me had gone down. let's see what happens here. >> first of all why is trump's favorite insult for jeb bush, why is it calling him low energy? every time he talks about jeb bush, well he's low energy. >> it sticks to him is run reason. and many ways trump has bk become the archie bunker candidate. and has everybody with his sound bites. and i don't think the bush campaign is ready to take trump on in this full frontal way. i know they think if they could take trump down they would be the soul survivor. and o i'm not sure i believe
1:24 pm
that. and trump has showed himself to be a good counterpuncher and really good on his feet with this low energy low-t guy thing he says is very effective and hits bush pretty hard. >> i haven't heard the low t. just the low energy. >> someone said it. >> a quote from politico. it was increasingly clear trump was trying to run a legitimate campaign and needed to be treated as any other candidate would, that includes exposing his record and agenda that will increase power in d.c. if nobody else is going to do it, we will. joy, do you think trying to make this a two-horse race works to the advantage of the bush campaign? >> well so far, to be honest with you nothing has really worked to the advantage of the bush campaign. i think out of necessity they feel they have to fight back because they do understand that all of the passion is on the trump side and jeb has not been able to generate any passion and
1:25 pm
quite frankly is kind of low energy. it is not a very e boulient campaigner. he comes across as the reluctant candidate when you see him on the stump. he's never been a high energy, engaging politician. so i think they have been backed into a strategy of trying to fight trump head on and be the guy to take him down in a verbal one-on-one. so far it is not working but it is as good a strategy as any at this point. >> a big thanks to both of you. appreciate your time. just ahead four months after the death of freddy gray in baltimore, hears today in the trial of the six police officers charged in connection with his death. >> also a kentucky county clerk continues to defy the supreme court today refusing to issue marriage licenses because she opposes gay marriage. now other clerks are standing by her. we're live in kentucky. also president obama's selfie stick is back. we'll explain that as well. hey terry stop! they have a special! so, what did you guys think of the test drive?
1:26 pm
i love the jetta. but what about a deal? terry, stop! it's quite alright... you know what? we want to make a deal with you. we're twins, so could you give us two for the price of one? come on, give us a deal. look at how old i am. do you come here often? he works here, terry! you work here, right? yes... ok let's get to the point. we're going to take the deal. the volkswagen model year end sales event ends on labor day. so hurry in to your local volkswagen dealer today. yup, we're constantly making thinkorswim better. here at td ameritrade, they're always working.

development right now in the first day of hearing for freddy gray, a baltimore judge denied two defense motions. rejected a motion to dismiss charges against the six officers allegedly involved in gray's death. also rejected a motion to remove baltimore's state's attorney marilyn mozby from the case. the decision comes four months after the arrest and indictment of six police officers, including one on murder charges in the death of 25-year-old freddy gray. gray died april 19th of a spinal injury sustained while in police custody. gray east death spurred massive protests in baltimore. and today the protests actually resumed outside the courthouse, although much smaller and much quieter. for more i'm joined by my panel. the judge called some of mosby's
1:30 pm
comments, quote, troubling. but decided to keep her on. how much of a victory are today's decision frgs ts for th prosecution. >> today's hearings were not about the evidence in the case. it was kind of like marilyn mosby, the prosecutor was on trial. and the judge said she's not guilty. she hasn't done anything even close to requiring her to be removed in the case. you know prosecutors in high profile cases hold press conferences all of the time where they talk about what a bad dude the defendant is and the strength of their evidence. so that is what she did in this case. it is just that we're not used to seeing that in prosecutions of police officers. >> decisions yet to come on whether the officers themselves are going to be tried together or tried separately. as well as whether the defense is going to get a change of venue. what do you expect on those two fronts? >> prosecutors have a lot of discretion. the defendants would like six
1:31 pm
different trial for each of the officers. that would be very inefficient. judges don't usually go for that. now the prosecutors are asking for two trials. i would be surprised if that's okay. the motion ab whether to move the case out of baltimore is huge. that is make or break. if it isbaltimore. we're talking not only different geography, politics. and jurors are much less likely to be skeptical about the place. that is going to be decided next week and i think is going to be the most dispositive motion in this case. >> can they get an impartial jury in baltimore? >> absolutely. i have a lot of confidence in juries after trying a lot of jury cases. the standard isn't whether they have ever heard about freddy gray or know about the concerns
1:32 pm
of baltimore police. you would have to be living under a rock if you didn't know about that stuff. and we don't want jurors like that. the question is there can be 12 people who can objectively look at the evidence in this trial and render a dispassionate fair verdict. and i don't think it is difficult people in baltimore can do. yes they heard a lot about the case but that doesn't mean they can't be fair. >> always appreciate your insight sir. thank you. >> great to be here. coming up as president obama urges the world to get serious about climate change while visiting alaska today, the president scored a major victory back in washington on the iran nuclear deal. that is next. mornings. wonderful, crazy mornings.

we figure you probably don't have time to wait on hold. that's why at xfinity we're hard at work, building new apps like this one that lets you choose a time for us to call you. so instead of waiting on hold, we'll call you when things are just as wonderful... [phone ringing] but a little less crazy. we're doing everything we can to give you the best experience possible. because we should fit into your life. not the other way around.
1:35 pm
everyone loves the picture i posted of you. at&t reminds you it can wait. right now the iran nuclear deal has the votes to go into effect. today after months of uncertainty over whether congress would kill the deal, president obama secured enough votes to survive a congressional
1:36 pm
challenge. when marmd senator barbara mccall ski became the 34th senator to come out in favor of the deal. all of this as john kerry offered a powerful defense saying the world would blame the united states if the deal was rejected and iran developed a nuclear weapon. >> the truth is that if this plan is voted down, question not predict with certainty what iran will do. but we do know what iran says it will do. and that is begin again to expand its nuclear activities. and just who do you think is going to be held responsible for all of this? the world will blame the united states. >> congress expected to vote on whether to approve the deal september 17th. i'm joined now by nbc news capitol hill correspondent kelly o'donnell. and kelly, opponents at this point of the iran deal, what is left for them to do now that the president seems to have enough
1:37 pm
votes to override the congrea congressional veto. >> next week there will be a debate. and it really is not a coincide that john kerry was making his big remarks today at the same time that democrats were able to secure the necessary votes. we had expected that barbara mccull ski, the venerable senator from maryland who has served longer than any woman in congress in history. she is retiring so she is able to cast this important vote for some of the appearance of it. she becomes the deciding vote. therefore other democrats who might be vulnerable in their own reelections are not cast in the, sort of, deciding vote way. which could be politically sensitive in some places. also her colleague is the senior democrat on the foreign relations committee. and he has worked closely with bob corker, the top republican, who came up with this idea of how congress would actually take
1:38 pm
a vote on the president's deal and how this will play out. so the suspense is sort of removed but the debate goes forward anyway. and we'll see how there are going to be arguments from republicans that despite the fact democrats put together enough votes in the senate, there is still substantial numbers of members of congress in the house and senate who oppose this and that is what they will try to shine a light on. they may not be able to stop it but they will sure talk about it. >> kelly o'donnell from washington. thank you. while in alaska this week president obama has a lot on the agenda. renaming mountains, hiking glaciers, speaking about climate change, starring in reality tv show with bear grylls. and apparently using a selfie stick. this is the president's latest dispatch from alaska. >> hi everybody. we're at -- fiords national glacier park. one of the most visited glaciers
1:39 pm
in alaska. it is spectacular, as you can see. let me give you a little shot of what we're looking at all across this incredible valley. it is beautiful. >> i'm joined now from anchorage, alaska. chris jansing. let's talk about the president's trip. first let's talk about the big deal for white house today. getting enough votes to secure the iran nuclear deal. any reaction from the president today on that? >> yeah this is a very big deal for this president. they have said all along publicly expressed confidence that this would happen. that they could have enough votes on their side, having said that, there was a time when i was with him in martha's vineyard when he was going to be on vacation where he was making calls that perhaps they didn't think he would have to. look, there was a bit of nervousness until they got that final vote. now the question is from the other side was not able to get
1:40 pm
enough momentum, could they gain enough momentum to get the 41 votes that they need so that there wouldn't have to be a question about a veto. would they stop the resolution from going through at all? but yes this is a major policy win for the president. and i can tell you that the people who have been working this -- and that involves just about everybody on his senior staff and his cabinet -- breathing a sigh of relief right now. >> let's turn to where you are right now, alaska. the president using this visit as the platform to talk about climate change. something he did yesterday with the backdrop of a receding glacier. take a listen. >> we've within abbeen able to day out here just learning how the glaciers are receding. and it is a sign post with what's happening with the changing climate. i'm going to give you little bit of a view of what it looks like out here. this is worth preserving. >> how does president obama hope that this ship is going to be
1:41 pm
effective in pushing for stronger action on climate change moving forward? >> look, he's approaching this in a way that we've never seen before. he's using a lot of social media. he's using technology. and frankly, there is a phrase that we use at the white house that is particularly apt here. and that is the be"the bear is loose," meaning the president is out there. he's used the phrase himself actually. and he is really trying to use the biggest possible bully pulpit and use all of the technology that is at his fingert fingertips. you saw him using the selfie stick to do that little video. for the first time ever all of the photos posted from oklahoma on instagram were posted by the president. not the staff photographer. only by the president. they have been really trying to use the visuals that they have here and go to places, not just
1:42 pm
that no president has gone before. but this is logistically, a senior official tells me, one of the most tough trips they have ever done. certainly in the united states. because they have tough communication there. where he's going later today, you can't get there by road. you have to either fly or take a boat. and so he's kind of pushing the envelope pushing his agenda and to do list and dprafrarngly his bucket list. >> tensions rising in kentucky as more clerks refuse to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couple couples. and here is a story a lot of folks continue to talk about today. pro wrestling legend, jimmy super fly snuka charged with murder in an unsolved case from three decades ago.
