following severe flash flooding last night. intense rain triggered what emergency services called a wall of water and debris. enough to sweep away two vehicles. 16 people were washed downstream. authorities say several children and mothers were among the dead or missing. we do know at this hour that three people did survive. but the search has been scaled back due to safety concerns. emergency crews will return to full-scale efforts in a matter of hours. and of course we will update you on that information as becomes available to us. also breaking news overnight, the police say the suspect at the center of yesterday's campus shooting in mississippi is now dead. shannon lamb was a professor at delta state university. police had been looking for him all day after another professor was found fatally shot in his office. on top of that lamb was also being sought in connection with another deadly shooting 300 miles away. the woman he was living with was found dead in their home yesterday morning as well. police eventually got in contact with lamb and he told them he was, quote, not going to jail. a few hours later they found him

driving his car. >> at a point is when he pulled over, and decided to get out of his car, and that's when they heard the single gunshot. >> that sound right before police found him dead of an apparent self-inflected gunshot wound. they still are not sure of a motive. the lockdown at delta state university campus has been lifted. 23,000 people have been displaced by two devastating wildfires in northern california, with the community of middletown nearly being wiped off the map. 400 homes and hundreds of other buildings were consumed by the valley fire. it is the most destructive in the state. officials and residents were shocked by the intensity of the blaze. >> every ember that was blowing a quarter to a half a mile in front of the fire ignited a new fire and it became a self-pro l self-propelling animal. >> it same like a freight train. it was bounding from place to place. >> five firefighters have been injured battling the flames.

at least one person, an elderly disabled woman, died. 13,000 have been displaced in lake county following mandatory evacuations. politics now, gop front-runner donald trump got a texas size welcome at a campaign rally in dallas last night. as many as 15,000 people turned out at the american airlines center for the event. trump had a lot to boast about including his lead in the polls and his lack of a teleprompter. the donald was also outspoken about his plans for illegal immigration. >> we are a dumping ground for the rest of the world. we are. a dumping ground. i don't mean to be disrespectful. but when a man has a problem and he's got his wife, or his girlfriend, and they move her over to the border for one day, has the baby on the other side of the border, our side, now that baby is a citizen of our country for however long the baby lives. hopefully -- it's wrong. it's wrong. >> well, trump got a lot of

cheers inside the arena, outside was a whole different story. crowds gathered for a dump trump rally. they were protesting trump's stance on immigration. meanwhile, fellow gop candidate carly fiorina is turning one of trump's insults into a political ad, it's called faces and responds to trump's rolling stone quote about fiorina's works. >> this is the face of a 61-year-old woman. i am proud of every year and every wrinkle. >> fiorina isn't the only candidate out with a new ad. jeb bush released this one featuring his mexican-american wife columba. in the ad bush speaks entirely in spanish. and columba speaks in english. on the democratic side, bernie sanders tried to find some common ground with students at liberty university yesterday. now liberty is the world's largest evangelical university and is known for its conservative culture. sanders asked attendees to look past their disagreements on issues like abortion and

same-sex marriage and instead look in to his economic agenda. coming up on andrea mitchell reports senator bernie sanders will be andrea's guest at noon eastern right here on msnbc. during an interview with extra tv hillary clinton was asked whether she would ever consider her husband, bill, as her vice president. she says he'd be good, but he's not eligible according to the constitution. >> he has served his two terms, and i think the argument would be, as vice president, it would not be possible for him to ever succeed to the position. at least that's what i've been told. so it has crossed my mind. >> during the interview, clinton was also asked about donald trump, kim kardashian and kanye west. well nbc has a new host of the celebrity apprentice. actor and two-term governor arnold schwarzenegger. yep, he is going to replace donald trump for the 2016-2017 season. schwarzenegger tweeted wow, i'm

blown away and honored by all your tweets. i can't wait to bring my experience to the board room and raise millions for charity. trump left the show earlier this year in order to run for the gop nomination for president and he tweeted congrats to my friend arnold schwarzenegger who is doing next season's celebrity apprentice. he'll be great and will raise lots of money for charity. well it was quite a scene on an american airlines flight out of miami last night. a female passenger had to be restrained after allegedly striking a crew member. cell phone footage shows the woman being removed by police. the chicago-bound flight was diverted to indianapolis. but was back in the air a short time later. the woman now faces several charges including battery. both the fbi and tsa are investigating the incident. also a major turning point in europe's refugee crisis. hungary is slamming the door shut on its border with serbia. for months, it's been a virtual human highway for migrants fleeing the horrors of war in their homelands. many seeking refuge in the arms of the european union.

20-3 at the half. falcons, well the eagles, they begin rolling in the third. 14 unanswered. both by running back dimarco murray. eagles down by two with under two minutes left in the fourth. sam bradford's pass is tipped. and intercepted by ricardo allen to seal the win. falcons win it 26-24. late night game vikings/49ers under a minute left, colin kaepernick in the shotgun and the nifty spin move scores the first points of the game. fourth, 17 yards out for his second touchdown of the game. he finished with 26 years and 168 yards the second most in san fran season openers. they win it 23. now to baseball yankees/rays top of the ninth. rodriguez rips one to right center field. they tie it up on a-rod's rbi double. two batters later, heathcot takes the pitch over the fence for the three-run home run.

welcome back to "first look." i want to show you the anatomy of the lead story the deadly flood in hildale, utah. this is the topography. the two cities are at the base of what they call a canyon. the actual name of it is water canyon. this is where the thunderstorm went right over the top. you can see from the topography that all of the rain that fell into the mountains flowed into the canyon and roared right through the city. here's the radar at 3:00 p.m. yesterday. a nasty thunderstorm. that's magenta. that's extremely heavy rain right over the top of that canyon. and then all the water flied right through. millions of gallons in like 20 minutes. and that was all it took for that horrendous flood there. they'll be cleaning up from for a long time. the other story this morning. it still feels like fall for at least one more morning. it's 39 in western new york this morning. we are in the 60s in new york city. 51 in raleigh. there's some cool spots out there.

charged with a skriem and has repeatedly denied past allegations. meanwhile though the stars, they are coming out for the pope's visit. according to the new york daily news aretha franklin, jennifer hudson and gloria estefan will perform at papal events when the pope francis visits the united states next week. he'll visit washington, d.c., philadelphia, and new york city. harry connick jr., norman lewis, and martin sheen will appear at madson square garden. the georgia joycen center says kids are actually getting drunk on hand sanitizer. a number of instances has increased 400% since 2010. sanitizers can contain 45 to 95% alcohol. so, consuming two to three pumps can give children alcohol poisoning. now to costa rica. look at this. sea turtle invasion anyone? that's what it looks like. on september 4th over 5,000 sea turtles arrived on shore to lay their eggs. air india has done something maybe a lot of people might not be happy with.

leading the news in the detroit free press, first ever bubonic plague case confirmed in michigan. a woman is recovering after apparently contracting the flea borne illness after a trip to colorado. she is not a public health threat. ringo starr and his wife are sending more than 800 items to auction to clear up some clutter as they call it. among the items are starr's first drum set from the beatles. this auction house estimates the lot will bring in $10 million. >> that's a garage sale and a half. >> i'll take that clutter. last night jimmy fallon celebrated arnold schwarzenegger taking over "celebrity apprentice." but he had one small concern. >> the first challenge figuring out what arnold wants you to do on "celebrity apprentice." you've got to go down to the chair.
