the website. i'm ayman mohyeldin. jonathan capehart picks up live coverage. i'm jonathan capehart. tonight, the day after the big debate, we'll fact check carly fiorina, talk trump and bring you the funniest moments. plus, bernie sanders reveals the biggest mistake he thinks obama made after his election. and the latest on the 14-year-old who was arrested for bringing a home made clock to school. but first, carly fiorina stole the show. the fight to the main stage paid off in a big way. carly fiorina received glowing reviews for taking control of wednesday night's primary debate. >> someone in the system their whole life, they don't know how broken the system is. a fish swims in water, it doesn't know it's water. it's not that politicians are bad people. it's that they have been in that system for ever. we could rebuild the six fleet. i will, we haven't. we could rebuild the missile

defense program. you know what a leader does? challenge the status quo, solve problems that have festered for a long time and produce results. that's what my whole life has been about. women are not a special interest group. women are the majority of this nation. we are half potential of this nation. and this nation will be better off when every woman has the opportunity to live the life she chooses. >> fiorina was the only woman who graced the stage but she's not the only one running for president. the former business executive said she's ready for hillary. >> mrs. clinton is going have to defend her track record, her track record of lying about benghazi, lying about her e-mails, about lying about her servers. she does not have a track record of accomplishment like mrs. clinton, i too have travels hundreds of thousands of miles around the globe. unlike mrs. clinton i know flying is an activity. it is not an accomplishment. mrs. clinton, if you want to stump a democrat, ask them to name an accomplishment of

mrs. clinton's. >> the second biggest takeaway from last night's debate wasn't the candidate, it was a topic. planned parenthood. the health care provider unattack by candidates who called for a fiscal budget that would defund the organization. many cited videos that activists released discussing the sale of tissue for medical research. >> i agree that we should defund planned parenthood. i don't know many people in america that don't think we should. >> i defunded planned parenthood 4 1/2 year ago. >> the systemic murder of children in the womb to preserve body parts for profit. >> i defunded planned parenthood. >> are these my values? these are horrifying. on these videos planned parenthood confesses to multiple felonies. >> i'd ask, do you think the unborn child united states a human being or is it just a blob of tissue? >> fiorina railed against the group with an especially vivid

tirade. >> i dare hillary clinton, barack obama, to watch these tapes. watch a fully formed fetus on the table, its heart beat, its legs, kicking, while someone says we have to keep it alive to harvest its brain. this is about the character of our nation and if we will not stand up and force president obama to veto this bill, shame on us! >> that's powerful stuff. details of the video she points out are striking but may not exist. sarah cliff watched all 12 hours, she says, quote, fiorina is wrong and those images fiorina described simply don't appear in the footage. either fiorina hasn't watched the videos or she's knowingly misrepresenting the footage. planned parent action fund said the footage is nonexistent. after a confrontation about the article, fiorina is ticking to

her story. >> there's a lot of commentary about these tapes being doctored. that's what the mainstream media keeps talking about the tapes and their origin. rest assured i have seen the images that i talked about last night, rest assured that human lives are being aborted fully formed in order to harvest body parts. >> fiorina's spokesperson told nbc news the videos speak for themselves. they are gruesome and planned parenthood is funded by taxpayers. those are the facts. fiorina's performance at the fir gop primary debate earned her praise of moderators, boost in the polls and place at big kid's table. this time a fact checker. her comments on planned parenthood and record hewlett-packard are both getting scrutiny. let us know what you think about the topic. tonight's question, do you think republicans will shut down the government to defund planned parenthood?

logon to pulse.msnbc.com and cast your vote. we'll share your response later in the show. joining me now is michelle coddle, senior writer at national journal, margie o'meara, a democratic pollster, and also maria teresa kumar, also on the national board at planned parenthood. thank you all. carly fiorina, will she be a woman's health advocate? >> look, carly fiorina has made no secret of the fact that she is running as a pro-life candidate and she was talking to was the republican base which wants their social issues dealt with. now, they will, because she is entering the adult table and getting more attention start being a little bit stricter about her facts, as you say, there will be fact checkers. what she needed to do last night get people to sit up and take notice of her. and i think she more than amply

achieved that. >> maria teresa, what's your response to the barrage of planned parenthood attacks at the republican debate, specifically what carly fiorina said and she said in her rebuttal she has seen the video that she described yet sarah cliff at vox, glenn kessler at washington post fact checker say that video doesn't exist. >> the easiest thing to do is for the campaign to put the video out there. that way she you can see what she's claiming is true. let's be clear, first, the federal government does not fund abortions for a planned parenthood. what it does do is goes into the areas that are most deserving, individuals that unfortunately don't have health clinics close by and most deserving of the population and provide from everything pap smears to cervical cancer screenings. the list goes on. for someone to take a shot at women's health do it for cheap political points, not only is it unfair but incredibly costly

because you're putting women's lives on the line. >> plamargie the discussion las night, particularly what carly fiorina had to say, makes you wonder if the republican party has regressed on women's health issues. do you think so? >> well, i think that she did a fantastic job of being a role model to kids who are watching, young women, even young women on the right, young women on the left, who can see a strong woman do incredibly well under difficult circumstances. i think she accomplished that in a way that appeals not just to women but menace well. i think if she wants to, the next step, reach out to women voters be republican or swing voting republican women or swing voting democratic leaning women, she's going to need to find some more daylight on some of the issues that appeal most to women. majority of women don't want to see planned parenthood defunded. majority of women, even majority of republicans overall, support

mandatory parental leave, something that she has come out against. so i think she's going to need the next step to really find issues common glund where she is empathizing with the voter and whether that's women specifically or voters overall, she can make that choice. but some of her positions so far are not in alignment where even republicans are. >> if anyone was following my twitter feed during that marathon of the debate or read the piece i wrote today, i thought carly fiorina won the debate. do you think carly fiorina won the debate last night? >> i agree with you. i think people were very impressed with her ability to stand up and take on donald trump to detailed policy positions. you know, there was a lot of question about whether she deserved to be at the big kids table for the debate. i think she dispelled all of those questions and came out swinging, which is what this republican base wants. donald trump, ben carson, carly fiorina, they are all running to be the outsider, you know, speak truth to power candidate, and i

think she absolutely addressed that last night. >> carly fiorina has been consistent from the breakfast i saw her at in april, kid's table debate last month and last night there at reagan library. margie, do you think that carly fiorina's performance, terrific performance, will translate in the polls? >> well, i'll tell you. as i've been following polls week by week they change relative to what's going on in the political dialogue. they change after debates, change after trump makes a news splash, change when walk does and, they change when he starts to slip and lose ground. republican voters are paying close attention. you can see polls reflect accordingly. i expect her to have a big bump following what happened last night. >> the republican party in the last election was knocked for having quote a war on women. is carly fiorina the answer to

the republican party's so-called woman problem? >> well, i i think that she's like margie said that she's definitely someone that is a strong woman. she's coming out as a strong candidate. she's not afraid of donald trump. if anything is basically put a mirror to the republican party how they become more accessible to women. resonating with republican women but resonating with independent women. a lot of women that have left the republican party. they keep playing their cards right and making sure she's polished but her facts check out, she has a strong contender. >> you just sort of alluded to her confrontation with donald trump, michelle. we got to see carly fiorina react to donald trump's commentary about her face live and in person. to me the kaboom moment. let's take a listen. >> you know it's interesting to me, mr. trump said that he heard mr. bush very clearly in what mr. bush said. i think women all over this

country heard very clearly what mr. trump said. >> how did she handle that? >> it was kind of genius. not only made donald trump seem sophomoric with personal insults but remained the entire republican party he's a bad ambassador for their brand in terms of not just women, but also the hispanic community and all of these people they've been trying to reach out to. so i think she got her point across pretty well. >> real fast, carly fiorina, she's definitely a rising star as a candidate. how will the democrats react to her if she ends up becoming the front-runner and then the nominee? >> i think you have to dust off when she went toe to toe with senator boxer. senator boxer had her facts in order, able to look at someone that gleaned a lot of the information from what was happening to her at hp and that's the shoe's going to drop. how effective was she at hp, what happened under her

that. >> mr. trump, you're using the talking points of the democrats and as we all know -- >> i'm using facts. >> -- three times in 4 1/2 years when i get elected it is working, we balanced a budge. many are saying, carly fiorina won the debate but it's important to point out trump dominated the drudge report's post-debate poll. 52% say he won last night's debate. the candidates were anything but cordial to each other in the debate. we see it on the campaign trail. lots of anger-filled personal attacks. white house press secretary josh earnest summed it up pretty well. >> watching the debate remained me of a tough day at the airport. when you saw -- well, you saw a dozen people in suits who are lined up in key ofbs in front of a plane, seemed angry, pessimistic and looking for somebody to threaten but stood there for three hours some you can hardly blame them. but what we didn't see, we

didn't see a lot of the sunny optimism that was typical of the president whose library they stood in. >> for more, let me bring in perry bacon, nbc news political reporter and a democratic strategist and warshaw professor of politics at usc. >> glad to be here. >> perry, do you think josh earnest's assessment is accurate of the people at the debate last night? pretty good. >> it was. they were not sunny, this was definitely like not morning in america, it was definitely even and definitely dark. the way they described the country being in decline, all agree the obama era's bad. unsurprisingly in a lot of ways. i do think the airplane analogy and the waiting around was accurate in the sense you could tell that third hour particularly donald trump and ben carson, they got tired. i was tired of watching it their

defense, they were exhausted. >> your reaction and all of the attacks last night. >> first of all, it was as long as a meeting of the speeches that fidel castro used to give. i turned to my wife and said, lord, i wish this was over. number two, everybody and there's a lot of stuff in the establishment press and some generally among republican establishment, that said, well, trump got done in in this debate. he did not. trump did not get trumped. you referred to the poll in drudge. there's a poll on news max that shows the same thing. . much more reflect the republican base than the elites who were sitting there in the reagan library. i thought the big losers last night were, first of all, scott walker, that prepared line on the apprentice didn't do him any good. he's almost out of the race. secondly, jeb bush, because he seems peevish, looks like he doesn't want to be there.

glared at trump over and over. i'm not sure mixing it up with trump the way he does does him a lot of good. thirdly, ann colter, the conservative commentate who are used a tirade of anti-semitic tweets which have drawn huge attention on social media. >> perry, what do you think about how donald trump did in the debate? as bob was saying, a lot of people not among member of the elite or washington bubble who say he won? >> i think bob is right in the sense that i read a lot of pieces saying marco rubio did really well and carly fiorina did. i expect fiorina to go up in the polls, because she drew a lot of attention to herself, very strong in her answers and i think that will help. that said, i watched the first debate. i did not think, wow, donald trump and ben carson were so good. i really did not think that. i barely noticed ben carson was there. yet they surged in the polls.

i think we should be careful to assume the washington new york people think who is good is who is good. conservative base is very different and they may like the way carson and trump approach issues like immigration. >> you know what, bob, in the last debate, you know, the elite folks all said carly fiorina won that kiddie table debate, should have been at main debate and should be in the cnn debate, and there she is. now today a lot of people are still praising her performance last night. will you be surprised if carly fiorina doesn't tick up dramatically in the polls and maybe even threaten ben carson, dr. carson's place -- spot second place behind trump. >> that's the history of the republican party in the last few years that all of these people come up usually disappear, that's what people thought was going to happen with trump. i would be very surprised if she didn't gain in the polls. i thought she did very well in the debate. she was crisp, concise, often

wrong but that doesn't matter because nobody corrects you on facts except donald trump who went after her business record. so i'd be surprised if she didn't go up. what i think i would be very surprised is if donald trump didn't hold his basic position in the republican party. no one has succeeded in shaking it at this point. he speaks for those alienated folks who helped power the republicans to take over congress in 2014, help them in 2010 take over the house, and it was a kind of bargain that the republican party made and now it's paypack time. those folks are driving this primary process. >> do you agree with what bob said? donald trump despite the performance last night is going to hang on to that position of front-runner in the republican party? for this nomination, i mean? >> i'll be honest. i don't know. i think the important thing to note what changed from the first debate the second debate you all after the other candidates, like the first debate was mainly

megyn kelly and chris wallace versus donald trump. last flight was rand paul, scott walker, jeb bush, chris christie, carly fiorina, fiorina's line about trump being sexist i thought was powerful. i'm not sure but i did see a more coordinated effort by pretty much the majority of the republican field to say we do not want trump as our nominee. you also have the club for growth running ads against trump. you have the establishment is firmly i guess even more against donald trump. so it would be a good test of his numbers, durability now. >> on that note, thank you. still ahead -- texas teen arrested for bringing his home made clock to school gets a massive show of support. my take on the debate's most-talked about moments.

california, was three hours of a lot of talking, a lot of standing around by the candidates and by judging from the way they all looked and the perspiration, it was unbelievably hot in there. there were moments throughout the night that were kind of good. we'll get to them in later blocks. marco rubio had a good one speaking english in the united states. lindsey graham had a terrific one involving late senator strom thurmond. three clips i want to show and talk about that i thought noteworthy. here's chris christie's opening statement. >> hi, my name is chris christie i'd like you to take the camera off of me and put it on the audience. ed a like to ask all of you, how many today believe in barack obama's america your children will have a better life than you've had? you see, that's why i'm running for president because leadership is not about me, it's about our country. what we talk about tonight it's not about us, it's about the people in the audience tonight

because in seven short years this president has stripped away their trust and their faith and belief that the next generation will have a better life. he has stolen that from us. when i'm president i'm going to take it back. >> that was terrific. chris christie, the man who was supposed to be the gop front-runner, the man who was at the very end of the stage because he barely made it into the debate, used his opening statement to make an incredible contrast to look at me, look at me, look at me, donald trump, chris christie, who everyone said was an ego maniac always want attention on himself i thought, smartly, said this isn't about me, it's about you. turning the cameras on to the audience and away from himself, and something he did consistently throughout the debate, i thought, saved him. chris christie isn't out yet. don't count him out. now let's talk about jeb bush. jeb bush was asked what he want a secret service code name to be. take a look. >> every ready, it's very high energy, donald.

>> okay. that moment there was notable for two reasons. one, donald trump has been attacking jeb bush as a low energy candidate for weeks now, for weeks, saying that jeb bush, he's just not there, energy's just not there. but when he was asked what his secret service code name wassing jeb bush had the perfect comeback, energizer, whatever it was. but another point in that moment that was also very telling and it was that sort of rather aggressive gimme five moment at the enwhere jeb bush whacks donald trump's hand. on the one hand it was like, great, wonderful moment where two guys are connecting. but there was a loud smack there. so you could see that jeb bush maybe was letting out a little

bit of the rage he has at donald trump for a lot of the things he has said, in particular, about jeb bush's wife. now, here's senator marco rubio talking about climate change. >> we are not going to destroy our economy. we are not going to make an american a harder place to create jobs in order to pursue policies that will do absolutely nothing, nothing to change our climate, to change our weather because america's a lot of things. greatest country in the world, absolutely. but america is not a planet. >> did you catch that? i certainly did the first go-round. america is not a planet. now i would say, this probably came in the third hour of the debate and if you were like most people watching that debate at home, by the end of the second hour you were so exhausted you could forgive anybody for saying just about anything. so we're going to talk about more things coming up from the debate, lie i said, marco rubio, lindsey graham. still ahead, a battle oak

today is constitution and citizenship day and the white house is rolling out a new

campaign to encourage immigrants who are permanent residents to become american citizens the president praised diversity in a video promoting the initiative. >> it's not about changing who you are. it's about adding a new chapter to your journey as an american citizen and to our journey, as a nation of immigrants. >> last night on the debate stage in california, some of the republican candidates took a different tone. donald trump doubling down on his english-only talking point. >> we have a country where to assimilate you have to speak english. we've had many people observe the years for many years saying the same thing, this is a country where we speak english, not spanish. >> but marco rubio, the son of cuban immigrants, defended using spanish to convey his conservative message to a broader audience. >> i do give interviews in spanish. i believe that free enterprise and limit government is the best way to help people who are trying to achieve upward mobility. they get their news in spanish,

i want them to hear that directly from me, not a translator at univision. >> the candidates were split on how to deal with illegal immigration. in an un-reagan-like move, several candidates called for building a wall. >> i want to build a wall, a wall that works. >> what we need to do is secure our board somewhere need to do it more than just a wall. we need to use electronics, we need to use drones, fbi, taf. >> yuma county, arizona, they stopped 97% of the illegal immigration there. they put in a double fence with a road so there was quick as ses by the enforcement people. >> for more i'm joined by maria teresa kumar, msnbc contributor and a "the washington post" contributor. give me your take on last night's debate. particularly when it comes to gop's immigration policy. >> clearly they don't have one. the idea that we're going to

build a fence along the side of mexico, this is one of the longest borders in the world. they're not providing viable solutions they're using quick talking points that are able to galvanize the base but not majority of the republican party and that's where the republican party has a problem, they are not providing actual leadership and saying this issue's complicated. we have 11 million people living within our borders. number two, net migration between mexico and the united states is net zero, we haven't seen an increase. finally, how are we going to actually ensure that we're going to win the white house if we are not talking about immigration in the right way and you're excludeing a whole swath of americans that happen to be latino. >> ej, one of the things, i think, donald trump is the one who has part of his immigration plan, deportation of 11 million people, including the american born citizen of those children. i don't want to get too far afield. a lot of the candidates concede

mass deportation is not a viable option. did you hear sensible options for dealing with undocumented workers from the group. >> first i should say buenos dias, good to be with you. jeb bush has a reasonable position on immigration. it done go far enough, in my view, because i don't like not giving people citizenship. i think that ultimately undercuts rights of everyone. but you know, i thought it was very significant that he chose to say, quote, ronald reagan and cite what ronald reagan did. i think it was a real sign how far to the right the republican party has moved on this issue or a large parts of it has moved on this issue that quoting ronald reagan now sounds like quoting a liberal on this question. and i think what you saw on that stage is, number one, a real split in the party. there always has been something of a split between critic of immigration and its business

constituency, which is very pro-immigration. but there is a much larger restrictionist wing in the party now. and that donald trump, by setting out this really radical position that's absurd position, we're not going to deport 11 million people it would cost a fortune. we took the money that he's proposing to spend on deportation and a wall, we might be able to improve our infrastructure. but a lot of the republicans are gravitating towards that. scott walker who used to be for immigration reform said my positions aren't that different from donald trump's. so he's a magnet on the party that's dangerous for it, if he cares about winning any latino votes in the next election. >> jeb bush and marco rubio have not been shy about speaking spanish on the campaign trail. when they do that, does that have any impact with latino voters on the campaign trail when they speak spanish? >> you're trying to connect with
