hillary clinton spoke a moment ago. >> the wages are not rising for most people, and everything from college to prescription drugs keeps going up, and inequality is still too big of a problem. and you know, in america, if you work hard and you do your part, you should be able to get ahead and stay ahead. that is the basic bargain of this country. while clinton got a big welcome, debbie wassermann schultz was shouted down with the chant of "more debates." >> while trump was at it again, one of the supporters in the audience called president obama a muslim, my friends, what is more important drawing a contrast with the republicans or arguing about debates? let's focus on the mission and the task at hand. enough is enough.

religious liberty is at stake. obama has been horrible. i will be great." and this is typical trump, and refusing to backdown and refusing to apology, and will the latest kon e trover si have an impact, because past ones have only caused his poll numbers to get up, but this is different, because he is getting criticized from the fellow democrats and frontrunner hillary clinton and the white house and this flap comes on the heels of what many saw as a wobbly debate performance from donald trump failing to put meat on the bones of a number of key policies like how to smooth over rush sharks and the tax policy, and some of the supporters want specifics about those things before they can get behind him. and as you point out, donald trump has tweeted about it, but he has not spoken about it, and we anticipate that he is going to do that it latter on tonight in iowa. thank you, kristen welker at the white house. and from there to alex in

manchester, new hampshire, not necessarily a big civic center, but it is what it s and so tell us what popularity hillary clinton is getting as oppose d o bernie sanders? >> well, hillary clinton brought down the house, and interrupt bade lot of applause and the campaign did a good job to stacking the audience with the supporters and passed out over 700 tee shirts and it is a good day for hillary clinton who could use one, because she has not had one in a while, but one of the loudest applause lines came when she talked about donald trump who is a major punching bag when she has been up here campaigning for her in new hampshire. this is what she has to say. >> don't be distracted by the flamboyant frontrunner, trying to bully and buy his way into the presidency, and the latest outrage and the way he handled the question about president obama is shocking but it is not

surprisi surprising. he has been trafficking in prejudice and paranoia throughout this campaign. >> so this is clearly a fight that hillary clinton is eager to have, and donald trump is the perfect foil for her, and she wants to position herself as the party's standard bearer in 2016. she wants to be talk about the republicans going up against them now and she does not want to be talking about bernie sanders whose name she did not mention and does not want to talk about joe biden who is eyeing the pace or the poll numbers or the e-mail, and she loves the talk about donald t m trump and you can expect to hear more about him from her in the days to come. >> and i want to ask you, alex, abouter bernie sanders and you talked about hillary and them cal pa campaign stacking the audience and giving out the 700 t-shirts and anything from bernie sanders? >> well, we have yet to hear him speak, but the supporters from both of the campaigns were lined up and by far the biggest

presence and a few from martin o'malley campaign and few others, but inside a lot of the bernie sanders' supporters and typically at the evens when you have all of the candidates there, he tends to not bring the organizers to the the event where they are happening, but they tend to be very, very loud, and very, very enthuse yas tegic, and they rival or match clinton's enthusiasm even though the numbers are tending to be smaller. >> thank you, alex, manchester. in phoenix, police say they have a man responsible for several of the seemingly random shootings. this morning, a man was taken to jail after being questioned by police. officials say that his gun was linked to 4 of the 11 cars hit since august. and we go to glendale, arizona, for the latest. and so he is only accused of the four hits, and the police are believing that the rest are copycats? >> well, alex that is probably

the most important question for people here in phoenix right now, but unfortunately, he is, we have not gotten the results of the investigation, a nd so i is unclear if the question has been answered, but today on the front page of "arizona republic" arrest. this is the sigh of relief for the hundreds of thousands of people in phoenix who have to travel up and down i-10, and the details on the case are very, very scarce and the police are keeping a tight lip on what is going on, but we are finding out a little bit more about the gun. i talked to a city councilor who was briefed by the police about the gun, and he says that this gun was a 9 millimeter, and maybe pawned at a local can pawnsh pawnshop, and that is what led the police to the gun suspect and matched at least four of the shootings along i-10, and the suspect is leslie allen merritt, and he is a landscaper and gun

aficionado and he was arrest ed at the walmart, and now the family is coming to the defense of the man, and they are saying that the police have the wrong guy. and this is 4 of the 11 shootings, but three others maybe due to possibly a pellet g gun, and that leaves four additional shootings still at this point unsolved, so that is the big question as this investigation is moving forward, alex. >> well, say lil -- sounds like a little bit of the relief, but we will be with you next hour with a briefing from the arizona dps chief. and the pope is going to be arriving in havana around noon and then heading to washington for his next stop, and large crowds are expected there where large crowds are expected.

and claudio, i know that the pope is a few hours from touchdown there in havana, but how large of a rollout are the cuban officials preparing? >> well, alex, everybody is ready to have the pope a huge welcome. he arrives in about four hours from now, and he is going to be welcome and greeted at the airport by raul kascastro and t cardinal of cuba, but the highlight is later on today, and may or only may meet fidel castro to dday, and this is notn the official schedule, but the vatican has hinted that meeting may take place if castro's health allows it, so watch out for later on, alex. >> and also with the parallels and the similarities of what the pope can expect when he arrives in washington, and he has an oval office visit as well. >> well, he will be welcomed again by president obama there when he lands in washington, but

the big difference there is going to be how big and strong the security cordon is going to be around the pope. the security now is so tight during the whole of the united states visit, but first in washington and then new york and then philadelphia, and the fear is that the pope is going to be not in an arm's length with the flock and the people, and he loves that. he loves to interact with people, and he is not afraid of anybody or anything, and he insists that he wants to travel in the popemobile and not cov covered by the bulletproof glass and the security may not be so happy about it, alex. >> yes, there are many challenges to keeping him safe. than you, claudio vargas in havana. and now, we now know the identity of baby e doe. her body was found in a trash bag on the beach in massachusetts. her name is bella bond, and she was 2 years old. her mother and boyfriend will be

charged in her death. >> the boyfriend and mother took steps to keep the disappearance secret to avoid prosecution. and kim davis may have violated a judge's order. one of the deputies is accusing her her of modifying licenses that may cause them to be invalid. the judge released her under the condition that she not interfere with employees as they issue marriage licenses. and authorities are worried that fires are going to roar back to life and undo major gains. the fire burning north of san francisco and the beaut fire burning southeast of sacramento

fun to watch, and to listen to, and to listen to. >> and well, may i ask you, because the word "fun" that you put there, and how much of this has the entertainment feel to it because of donald trump? >> well, i find it very entertaining, and you know, so much ado is made of a lot of nothing sometimes, but it has n been very, very fascinatinging, and i know a majority of beet of the candidates on both sides of the aisle, and i find it very, very fascinating, and it has increased the interest amongst the public, and people are talking about it in all walks of lif life, and that is a good thing, a good thing for the united states. >> a lot of people can agree that political discourse is a good thing across the united states, but what about donald trump. is he a legitimate candidate and good for the republican party? >> well, he is a phenomenon, and unbelievable that he has risen to the top so quick ly, and he has stayed up there. it is a fascinating event, and i

know donald trump. he is a very, very nice person, and people are talking about him everywhere you go all of the way from walmart to costco to louis vuitton, and people are interested in that there is an array of candidates, and it is true on both sides of the aisle. and look at bernie sanders and he is another one that has been talked about and shot to the top. so it is very, very fascinating. >> all right. let's talk about immigration relative to donald trump's plan that calls for the building of the full border wall paid for by mexico, and calls for ending of the birthright citizenship which calls for the changing of the 14th amendment, and is this realistic? >> well, it is a very very difficult situation that we in the united states have face and of course, i am very familiar with the southern border, and i

believe that the first and foremost, we have to get the border secure. no doubt about it. it is -- arizona has become the drug gateway with the drug cartels, and the crime that came with it, and the drophouse, and the extortion and the kidnappings, a nd if we don't gt the border secured and then if we could do it, we can then deal with all of the other issues, and how the border wall is going to be paid for in your question regarding donald, i don't know how he is going to be doing it, but nothing is going to be happening in regards to the situation that we are facing until the border is secured. >> and how about the logistics for arizona to handle the deporting all of the undocumented immigrant, and what would the impact be on the economy? >> well, it is not arizona that does the deport iing, but it is the responsibility of our federal government, and that is what our concern was that we would have to step up, and do the job that the feds wouldn't do.

and you know, they were very successful in securing the border in california. they certainly were successful in yuma of securing the border, but in the tucson region, they have not, and we are faced with all of the costs, and the crime that comes dealing with the cartels, and it is outrageous. we shouldn't have people living in southern arizona that are fearful for their lives dealing with that the day in, day out. it is something that the federal government needs to step up and do, a nd they can do it. why don't they do it? and so that we can move on and deal with the other issues regarding the birth riright citizenship, the 12 million and the 11 million people that are already here. you nknow, we have to have a solution, and i think that the discussion that we are having with all of the presidential candidates is good. we need to hear ideas from everybody. how it is going to be done. when is it going to be done, and they have to be truth teller, and when they tell us what they

are g are going to be doing, they need to do it, and that is what we base our vote on, and so i am listening very, very carefully. >> i know you are obviously, but the gop approach to the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the u.s., and might that approach lose to a latino vote for a generation, and are you worried about some growing latino force with some harsh rhetoric out there spouted by donald trump? >> well, i think that as politicia politicians, i think that we are all concerned about citizens, and we should all be concerned about people voting for certain fl philosophies that we agree in. you know, i don't believe at all that latinos are going to be voting differently than a lot of the republicans are going to be voting. we have a lot of republican latinos in arizona that agree that the border needs to be secured, and then they want to work on the solution. i don't think that anybody

denies the fact that we have to have a solution. again, it take me back to the border. we have to have the border secured, and deporting 11 million or 12 million people is difficult. i don't know if in fact it is possible, but we have to stop the flow, you know. you have to plug the hole in the wall. >> and what about the exchange between donald trump and the supporter there thursday today, and in fact, just play it, and take a listen. >> okay. this man, i like this guy. >> i am from white plains, amen. okay. we have a big problem in this country, and it is called muslims, and we know that the current president is one. you know that he is not even an american. >> we need this as a first question. >> anyway, we have training camps growing where they want to kill us. that is my question. when will we get rid of them. >> we will be looking at a lot of different things, and lot of people are saying that, and that bad things are happening, and we are going to be looking at that

and a lot of things. >> a lot of people have weighed in on that, and are you, ma'am, uncomfortable with that the response to the question? >> well, i don't know if i am unk uncomfortable with the question, and a lot of people know that we have a lot of muslims in the country, and that is their faith -- >> but the president is not one of them? >> well, no, the president says that he is a christian. but i think that it is a lot of big to do the about something that politicians engage in during their careers and a lot of people say a lot of thing, and the public says a lot of things, but, you know, i don't know what faith the president obama is, but being a muslim doesn't make you a terrorists and we have a lot of good ones, and a lot of the musl muslim-practicing people in the state of arizona, and they are practicing the faith, and that is what we are all about, the right to do that >> and with regard to that exchange there, and for someone

who is running for the dignified office of the president of the united states, doesn't he have an obligation to correct someone who is making a blatant error and stating a falsehood about the current president of the united states, and you certainly recall what happened when your senator john mccain in the '08 campaign faced somebody in the audience who made a derogatory comment, and he was firm, and he took the microphone away from her, and he corrected her. and in this case, donald trump just kind of says "right" under his breath, and then says, i have to get this question first? >> well, i have heard that it is a plant in the audience, and you know, when you are on the campaign trail and you have an audience out there, and lots of times, and i have been in that

position, that things are said to us in a bad light and sometimes you don't hear correctly, and you have -- it is a difficult situation to be put into, but i believe that he answered basically the question of what he thought that he had heard. and it was a guy a plant and is the news media making this something larger than what it is? you know, alex, we have so many important issues that we should be discussing and everybody has their mind made up in regards to the president obama and the faith, and he says he is a christian, and why is that even being discussed and why does anybody have to defend him? let it go. move on. and let's talk about what is really important to the united states of america. >> all right. well, former governor of arizona jan brewer, we will guarantee to have you back to talk about issues that you find to be important down road. thank you so much, and good to see you.

. >> welcome back to "weekends with alex witt." kelly ayotte once got senator ted cruz to lay out his strategy for success as he plans to end government funding for stopping fund i funding to planned parenthood. and he said that he is not opposed to it if it achieves the desired result. and now, after seeing that, are you seeing the establishment trying to rein in the party brands? >> well, ted cruz has been trying to change minds since he became a senator, and he is not particularly open to it, and kelly ayotte, and mitch mcconnell and john boehner

believe that planned parenthood should not be receiving federal funding, and they are all on the same ideology, but conservatives want to see the lawmakers to do everything possible to strip the federal funding from planned parenthood, but as kelly ayotte says, the votes are not there for the republicans. and social conservatives want to see the lawmakers to take it to the white house to the president. >> and do you think that the gop leaders are worried because a shutdown that is perceive ed d e driven to the gop ahead of an election year would do some damage? >> well, absolutely, and going into the general election, this is something that we have seen the last time that we have had a funding fight that goes to the brink, and the gop establishment says they are worried that washington is broke n and they are shutting down the government over these disputes, but the republican primary voters, they

are so angry at washington and saying, look, before the last midterm cycle i was told that if the republican leaders were in kon troll of the house and the senate, we would get it done and get obama care defunded or stripped or de-funded, and it has not happened, because of the political realities in washington. >> and senator cruz brought the possibility to the forefront at the gop debate, and listen to that. >> the republican leadership in both houses has begun the discussion by preemptively surrender i surrendering to barack obama that we will give in, because obama threatens a e veto, and he is committed to the liberal principles, and he will fight for them, and he says that he will veto any budget that does not budget planned parenthood and we need to stop surrendering and start standing for our principles. >> and what is he trying to do to insthais the party stand up when the chances are pretty

close to nil? >> well, the republicans are spoiling for the fight, and looking at both donald trump, ben carson, and ted cruz and carly fiorina, and they are seeing a surge there among the primary voters, and they say, i don't care about the rules in washington, but i am cared about results, and getting it done, and they are rewarded for saying it in debates, and now, when you are governing and on capitol hill, there are fill bibuster rules, and debates, and there are a series of constitutional rules that you go through, and but republican primary voters don't care about that stuff, and they want to see the result, and seeing the ideology that they have been vocal about and enacted on in washington, and the reality is that it it is not going to happen, and they are spoiling for the fight and wanting barack obama to be vetoing measures, and saying at least we got that far. >> and okay. to the frontrunner donald trump, and the latest on the remarks of the supporter who made remarks and the refusal to correct those

remas remark, and carrie, any fallout of the polling or will he get away with it as he has in saying other thing, and only increases the support? >> well, it is the level of outrage expressed in mainstream media has inverse number of poll number, and they have gone up when he had disparaging comment s on john mccain's military record, and the series of statements about the mexican americans, and that has fueled the rise, and nothing about this statement is going to be different here, and it is worth looking into some of the poll numbers about what the republicans believe about the president, and there is a substantial chunk of republican primary voteers and some 30% to 40% who believe that the president might be muslim, and the people who are speak iing t or the people that donald trump are speaking to, i don't believe that their mind is going to be changed at all by this. >> and carrie, any indication if carly fiorina is going to be getting a bump as to the wildly applauded gop performance wednesday? >> well, she had a strong performance and we heard from the voters on the ground who

led the birther movement, and does he bear some are responsibility? >> yes, and when they tried to get trump to defend him, and he on the stage, and the audience, and the question comes to him, and he has to swing. he just can't take it. the problem is that the presidential primary, republicans, it is like a circus, and it is viewed like an entertainment, and the quips and the repas and the gaffes and who is going to be falling off the high wire, and it is not surprising that the republican nomination process which is a circus attracts a circus barker, and donald trump is a cheap barker. >> and now, this is what chris h hayes, my colleague was told by the new hampshire campaign manager for new hampshire trump

group. >> it is time we have a businessman to run this country, and we need somebody to negotiate contracts and bring jobs back into the country and we can't expect that from a politician and he is not bought and paid for by any special interests. >> and she is talking about how he was on the tv show "the apprenti apprentice" and a successful person is also bernie sanders who is speaking his mind. >> and he is also, a major, and senator and mayor of burlington, vermont, and it is not a record like the "apprentice" but that l lady is representative of millions of voters who do not do their homework and that is the

problem. elections should not provide spectator sport for millions of voters ash and the candidates have a responsibility to engage the voters to make them participate to say, send us your agendas, and what you think should happen, get out there and march and protest and fill the auditoriums, but you have to do your homework. if the american voter was astute and knowledgeable about voting for the next president as they are now about sports where they know the records of the players, the strategies of the managers and i mean, it is brilliant in terms of depth, we'd have a much stronger democracy, and so i go right back, alex, to the fact that the voters have to develop living room sessions where they study the records, and study the language, and study the personality and character of the candidates, and then they make up their mind. and in an internet age, you could have a whole network of these living room session, and it does not take that much, 10 or 15 hours before november 2016

or before the primaries, and the focus has to be on the issues and the dynamism coming from the voters, and otherwise, they are spectators before a circus. >> all right. in terms of the people who have studied in as we switch gears to the wednesday night debate, and that exchange between donald trump and carly fiorina. and here is some of it. >> it is interesting to the me, because mr. trump said that he heard mr. bush very clearly in what mr. bush said, and i think that women all over this country heard very clear ly what mr. trump said. >> i think that she has a beautiful face and i think that she is a beautiful woman. >> so what kind of impact do you think that her comment made on both of their campaigns? >> well, i was a nice repast and

dignified, but it is a side show that it is, and what is that the need for full medicaid for all, and the cracking down on the crime gamagainst consumers and workers and the waste in the public budget or the wars of aggression overseas or not repairing america and providing jobs in every community the way that bernie sanders has been talking about public workers and infrastructure, and it is all a side show, alex, and the media has a responsibility to call it for what it is, and start sponsoring really serious discussion about matters that are on people's minds trying to the raise their families and send them to schools, and having to have a safe and healthful environment and having their taxes respected in terms of the way they are used, and that is why there is a left-right alliance bubbling up around the country on a lot of the issues including restoring the minimum wage which is gutted for tens of millions of american workers.

cannot be recycled like what? >> well, this really got me, 1 of every 6 items that people put in the recycle bin is not recyclable like animal carcasses is a thing that they get to the pl plastic bags, and that is going to fall into the category of aspirational recycling which is the idea that should or might be recyclable, and is so, i will do the good deed of throwing it in the recycling bin just in case, but in most cities, plastic bags are not recyclable, and gum up the machinery and make it more expensive to get it through the system. >> and what about in europe some things called extender producer expendability, and how does that work? >> it is the idea that the producers of the items that we are e throwing away should be responsible for the entire life cycle down to disposal, and we have it a little bit in the united states especially with the electronic waste.

of excitement here this weekend for the gop hopefuls speak iing this weekend. >> thank you. and now, with the war against isis, the war against the taliban continues to remain outside of the spotlight, but the u.s. drone strikes killed six pakistani militants, and in yemen, the u.s. has launched six new strike, and now a book takes us deep inside of president obama's drone campaign and how the controversial target anwar al awlaki has far outlived his death. and scott, welcome to you, author of the book "inside the rise of the drone warfare." as you know, the president

conde condemned the drones, and then he is in yemen and condemning that, and then he is plotting the attack of two airliners, and what is it is that happened there with al awlaki? >> well, it is interesting, and why i wrote the book, because we have families with career aspirations, and emotions, and that is what i set out to understand is how a guy that was a successful cleric in three american mosques who actually preached about the appeal of religious freedom in america, and he liked at lot of things about america, and he anded his life, as you say, plotting the deaths of americans. and it is a complicated story, but one of the things that i discovered was that he left the u.s. and left what was a promising career in the states as a public figure in part

because the fbi in looking at possible terrorist connections did not find any terrorist connections, but he was visiting prostitutes all over the d.c. area where he was and ima'am at one of the mosques. >> and now, the president went from the mow benobel peace priz unprecedented use of the drone strikes, and what is to be concerning about this? >> when he came into office the war wars in afghanistan and iraq were failures, and there were hundreds of thousands is of civilians kill and the effect on american security unequivocal, and so he wanted to get out of those en taken elements, and he

recognized the real threat, and he seized upon the drone as the potentially the ideal answer to the problem. he would often tell the aides, let ee's kill the people who ar trying to kill us, and by implication not all of the people who are dying in the big wars. so he actually while it was classified so he didn't talk much about it on the campaign trail explicitly, he'd actually planned all along to yuse the drones in an aggressive way to take on al qaeda in pakistan. >> and how about al awlaki, more powerful as the propaganda figure, alive or dead? >> well, one of the remarkable things about anwar al awlaki is that he remanins today four yeas after his death in the yemen in a drone strike, he is a powerful influence, and i would say more than half of the terrorism cases that i look at in the united states or cases where the young

people are trying to fly off to join the islamic state in syria, if you look back into the how they were radicalized, you will find that al law awlaki's yout video videos were, you will come up with 40,000 individuvideos ark is an extremely potent force and in some ways seen as a martyr by the admirers, and given him new authenticity and authority. >> and the perception of president obama is that of a studied constitutional law profess professor, and somebody who doesn't make rash decisions, and the death of a ordinary americans was a important decision for him? >> well, he told colleagues at the time that it was in fact an easy decision. and, you know, there are some legal scholars who agree with him, and some who do not. and you know, his feeling was that this guy is posing an

imminent threat to the united states, and plotting activity will to blow up the airliners and at a tack in other ways, and that he needed to be killed. i think that there are people who are strongly going to disagree with that point of view, and strongly disagree with the notion that the president should have an american killed without trial based on e secret intelligence, and another thing that the president certainly did not anticipate was a killing him would leave in play this enormous legacy that the al awlaki left behind and would preserve him as a dangerous influence after that dangerous drone strike. >> and when you look at the drone campaigns in current states of iraq, yemen, and iraq and afghanistan, and what does all of this have to say about president obama's legacy? >> well, you know, i think that he was hoping to sort of be a

domestic president, to get us out of the two big wars and certainly, he did with draw u.s. troops from iraq, and he is greatly reduced the u.s. presence in afghanistan, but of course, you know, iraq has gone south and he now, he came to face, you know in some ways a more formidable foe than al qaeda ever was in the islamic state in syria, and it is turning out that the drone has not really solved the problems that he faces with isis. so, you know, despite his, you know, the fervent desire to get the united states out of these ma ra-- morasses in the middle east, that is he has failed to do that and that is a big part tof the legacy. >> thank you, author scott shane and thank you for the discussion.

of the book, "the nurses." thanks you for joining us, alexandra robbins. and what made you write that column? >> well, their comments exacerbated the misconception of what nurses do. they make so many sacrifices, and put up with long hours and ridiculous understaffing and aggressive patients because they want us to heal, and nobody should be silencing the nursing, but honoring them. >> and repercussions is growing and advertising is pulling the commercials, and "people" magazine spoke with her, and he told the magazine that miss collins criticized miss colorado, and there was intense criticism, and advertisers are pulling the plug. >> not only it is skill and

dedication, and miss colorado chose her talent portion to enable her spokesman skills which is what miss america was about and so deriding it is mean spirited and it is a lot more talent to earn those nurse scrubs and stethoscope than it does to wear a bikini. >> and now sh, what impregts do nurses going into the profession say to you? >> well, some people wanted me to share the stories for those who go into the beach read book. i followed four character nurses for a year and interviewed hundreds others and left with the impression that nurses are intelligent, selfless and nurses are not shams. >> why are these stereotypes remain, and the average nurse makes about $66,000 a year, and it is one of the largest e growing employment areas in the country, but why the

stereotypes? >> because the nurses don't have the voice they deserve. the field of nursing has changed drastically in the last several year, and now in 21 states and the district of columbia, nurse practitioners players on a health care team. >> do you think all of this controversy in books subpoena as your own are going to have a positive impact on the nursing profession? >> i really do. i think a silver lining to this, nurse supporters are aligning to spread awareness that nurs are truly heroes. and i think people are finally starting to listen. >> is there one story that stands out from your book that you'd want to share, one particular passet of the four that you followed? >> one woman, molly, who i followed for a year. she was an e.r. nurse. she stayed past her shift to help a dying man and his wife. it was one of the most moving stories that came across during that year. and i'll and nutshell it for you. instead of leaving her shift, she stayed with them because

they had spent the whole night at the hospital knowing that the husband was going to die. and when a medical room finally opened up for him to die in, instead of wheeling him straight there, she stopped at a beautiful location in the hospital with a big window because she knew it would be the patient's last sunrise. she waited and she let the couple embrace each other in front of that sunrise. the man ended up passing away in his wife's embrace. the things that nurses do, nobody should be deriding them and we should respect them as the heroes as well. >> wow that put a knot in my throat. compassion with a capital "c." i'm glad that you shared that with us alexandra robbins. thank you so much.
