politics and the comments from republican presidential candidate ben carson that are now drawing criticism. the renowned neurosurgeon and devout christian saying on "meet the press" that a muslim should not be elected president of the united states. >> should a president's faith matter? should your faith matter to voters? >> i guess it depends on what that faith is. if it's inconsistent with the values and principles of america, then of course it should matter, but if it fits within the realm of america and consistent with the constitution, no problem. >> so do you believe that islam is consistent with the constitution? >> no, i do not. i would not advocate that we put a muslim in charge of this nation. i absolutely would not agree with that. >> the comments drew condemnation on the council for american relations who said his statements disqualified him as a

candidate. "you cannot hold these kinds of views and at the same time say you'll represent all americans of all faiths and acgrounds." he added in "the hill," muslims feel your religion is part of your public life and what you do as a public official, inconsistent with our principles and our constitution. he'd make an exception if a candidate publicly rejected all the tenets of sharia and lived consistent with that, then i would nt' have any problem. fellow republican candidates also reacted to the question about whether a muslim could be president. >> to me i think the american people are going to decide who the president is based on the merits of their positions and qualifications, not based on their religious beliefs. >> i think this shows that dr. carson is not ready to be commander in chief. he said he didn't believe someone of the muslim faith could be loyal to the constitution. my believe is that the 3,500,

approximately, american muslims wearing the uniform of the united states military are loyal to the country, they're fighting and tying for their nation. >> can you imagine supporting or being comfortable if a muslim ever became president of the united states? >> i can say that it's something that at some point could happen. we'll see. i mean, it's something that could happen. would i be comfortable, i don't know if we have to address it right now but it is something that could happen. some people have said it already happened, frankly, but of course you wouldn't agree with that. >> questions regarding heated rhetoric toward muslims came up last week after donald trump refused to correct a supporter who painted all muslims as extremists while rejecting president owe pa ma's state of religion and place of birth. he responded friday in a series of tweets "am i morally obligated to defend the
