along fifth avenue on his way to new york city's st. patrick's cathedral. speaking at a packed evening prayer service the pontiff gave thanks to the nuns and religious women of the u.s. >> to you, religious women, sisters and mothers of this people, i wish to say thank you. >> nbc's dave ray is live in manhattan where pope francis will address the u.n. general assembly and later on lead a mass at madison square garden. it's going to be a really busy day for the pope. >> hey there, good morning, betty. in all pope francis is scheduled to spend just over 30 hours here in new york. much of that time will be filled with what he seems to enjoy the most, greeting the faithful face to face. as they have at each stop on this historic tour, thousands greeted pope francis as he arrived in new york yesterday afternoon. lining the roadways through manhattan, waving flags and

banners, raising their cell phones for a picture. many waiting hours just for a glimpse of the holy father. his first and only stop late thursday, st. patrick's cathedral where he took part in vespers, or evening prayers. >> thank you for stopping by. come back soon. >> reporter: the pope day in new york city will be a full one today. beginning with an address to the general assembly at the united nations, where he's expected to touch on the environment, the sanctity of life, peace, and an open dialogue among leaders. all issues he's discussed throughout this tour. next, he will visit the 9/11 memorial museum and world trade center site for a multidema'amational service. >> he has a very, very tight agenda and he is the one that said i want time to go in to an inner city catholic school. >> reporter: he will do that at our lady queen of angels school in east harlem. >> this is the best day of my life so far. >> reporter: the students spent the summer practicing prayers and hymns that they will recite for the pope later today.

next, the papal motorcade will wind through central park in the tour and visit to the city with a mass at madison square garden. now the iconic arena seats about 19,000. but many more are expected to line the hallways and corridors there. the crowd likely spilling out onto the sidewalk and street. that will be the end of his new york visit. then he travels to philadelphia, where pope francis will end his six-day u.s. tour. that's the latest here in new york. i'm jay gray. betty back to you. >> along the way everyone wanting to get a glimpse of the pope. new york city mayor bill de blasio is calling the pope's visit the largest security challenge ever faced by the nypd. in order to protect the pope the city is using 24,500 barriers, measuring a total of 37 miles. 409 pieces of concrete block weighing a total of 818 tons. 1200 traffic cones. 43 sand trucks, and 19 barrier trucks. just a reminder, nbc and msnbc

will have live coverage of the pope's events throughout the day so you don't want to miss it. it was a chaotic scene at the muslim holy site of mecca. massive crowds and confusion caused a stampede that killed more than 700 people, leaving at least 800 injured. it happened yesterday just miles from mecca's grand mosque. a california lawyer and his wife were there. >> from our perspective, crowd control was almost nonexistent. nobody was telling us anything. >> despite security and infrastructure development, this is the latest in a string of tragedies at the hajj. it's a pilgrimage every muslim is expected to take once in their lifetime, claiming 3,700 lives since 1990. saudi arabia's leader has ordered an investigation. now to seattle. yesterday a deadly collision between a charter bus and a popular tourist ride known as duck boats. four people are dead, 15 remain hospitalized, 12 of them in intensive care. nbc's morgan ratford reports.

>> reporter: just before noon a charter tour bus filled with students collided with a popular duck tour vehicle crowded with tourists. nearly 100 first responders rushed to reach the horrific scene on a seattle bridge. a triage was then set up to rescue the trapped and treat the injured. at least 50 people were evaluated. witnesses say the open-air vehicle struck the middle of the bus, shattering the windows, ripping off panels, and reducing it to a twisted chunk of metal. >> shot across all three lanes at full speed, hit the side of that bus. people on the bus flew through the front of the windshield. >> reporter: in a statement from ride the duck seattle, the company expressed condolences, but said the cause of this accident is not known. on the bus, 45 students and employees from a local college. many of them international students getting ready to start the school year. >> we had a terrible tragedy. there's been a terrible loss of life and there's been injuries. and our thoughts, the thoughts and prayers of this city, go out to everyone. >> reporter: duck tours is a popular tourist attraction.

the boat is designed to travel on the roads, as well as water, so the hull is actually stronger than most buses. but without seat belts. and this isn't the first time a crash like this has happened. a july 2010 duck tour accident in philadelphia sent 37 people into the water. >> that was nbc's morgan ratford reporting. over the next few days, president obama will be meeting with the leaders of superpower rivals china and russia. the president of china will be welcomed at the white house this morning. then on monday, president obama is scheduled to meet with russian president vladimir putin at the united nations general assembly in new york. nbc's tracie potts has the details about what is on president obama's agenda. >> reporter: china accused of human rights abuses and suspected of hacking government computers, gets another formal welcome at the white house this morning. >> we continue to be a cheap date when it comes to human rights, then we could expect these atrocities to continue on and on and on. >> we want to be greater business partners but we have to

do so in a legal environment, where they stop stealing our stuff. >> reporter: the state department insists the u.s. will not shy away from confronting those issues. >> we're going to continue to be just as forthright and candid about those as we have been. >> reporter: but china is a key trading partner and the world's biggest polluter. today china and the u.s. are expected to announce a new deal to curb emissions. mean time, at the united nations this week, russian president vladimir putin has asked to meet with president obama. the white house says ukraine will top the agenda. >> i hope that russia sees what's happening in ukraine, and will rethink it. >> reporter: they're also expected to discuss russia's support for syria's government. >> president obama will make it clear once again that russia doubling down on their support for the assad regime is a losing bet. >> reporter: tracie potts, nbc news, washington. well, donald trump seems to have a new feud brewing.

this time with fellow gop presidential candidate marco rubio. on msnbc's "morning joe" yesterday trump made a comment about rubio being sweaty. >> i'm looking at guys like marco rubio, who has the worst voting record in the united states senate, and young guy, although he sweats more than any young person i've ever seen in my life. i've never seen a person sweat -- i've never seen a guy down water like he downs water. >> well, later in the day rubio sat down for an interview with kentucky sports radio, and at one point he called trump a very touchy and insecure guy. then, late last night trump fired off this tweet saying quote, just watched marco rubio on television. just another all talk, no action politician. truly doesn't have a clue. worst voting record in senate. this is the first time rubio and trump have gotten into an extended back and forth but it seems like nothing new for the donald. a spokesperson for fox news says trump will be meeting with fox news chairman roger ailes next

week. they'll be discussing their, quote differences of opinion, regarding trump's presidential run. and this sunday on "meet the press" host chuck todd will have an exclusive interview with hillary clinton. he'll also be speaking withed only other woman competing for the white house, that being carly fiorina. nine minutes after the hour. time to get down to business. cnbc's landon dowdy is here. good morning. >> good morning, betty. more interesting every day with those politicians. volkswagen's board is expected to name a new ceo today after former chief martin winterkorn resigned on wednesday in the wake of the company's u.s. emissions scandal. the board says the head of vw's porsha unit is the front-runner. volkswagen could also fire several top executives including the ceo of its u.s. operations. and strike while the iron is hot. amazon is selling prime memberships for $67. but only for today. prime offers unlimited free shipping and streaming video normally for $99 a year. amazon's promotion today is to celebrate the five emmys won by its original show "transparent."

here's your first look at friday's "scrambled politics." a new cnn/wnur poll shows bernie sanders beating hillary clinton in new hampshire. 46% of those who plan to v in new hampshire' democtic primary next year say they would vote for sanders. 30% back clinton. vice president joe biden, who hasn't even entered the race, has 14%. maryland governor got to meet the pope. he tweeted it was an honor to meet his holiness today and receive his blessings on behalf of all cancer patients. back in june hogan announced he was diagnosed with non-hodgkin's lymphoma. in an interview with "vanity fair" rapper kanye west isn't backing down with his plans to some day run for the white house. if, in fact he does, there's at least one person he'd like to work with. he said when i run for president i prefer not to run against someone i would be like, i want to work with you. as soon as i heard ben carson's speech i tried for three weeks to get on the pho wit him. i was like, this is the most brilliant guy, end quote. as we mentioned earlier,

interesting that hillary clinton is losing to a self-described socialist from vermont. and i think that it is ntllbecause of this e-mail server controversy that has dogged her campaign. and quite frankly she hasn't really had the most transparent campaign. she hasn't given many interviews. but if you look at the past couple of days, betty, you're seeing that secretary clinton is starting to showcase more of her personality. she gave an interview to lena dunham. she's also kind of, you know, she gave an interview just last weekend on cbs on the sunday show. and so you're starting to see, i think, hillary clinton really kind of apprehensive about how senator sanders has gained on her, and the apprehension of a lack of debate within the democratic party. >> she's also on "meet the press" this sunday, as well. >> yep. >> but is it a little too late to start showing this? are people seeing, i guess, the motive here? does it not seem genuine? >> well, you know, all of this is happening just weeks before she is set to testify on capitol

hill for those e-mail controversy and of course the fbi is investigating her. but there's a lot of rumblings that vice president joe biden is very carefully considering getting into this race. and s i also think that she's trying to ease some of the concerns of the democratic establishment and the democratic donors who are sitting there, betty, and quite frankly they're scratching their heads saying hey, wait a minute, what's going on here, hillary? but we'll have to see whether or not joe biden gets in. >> he's not even on the ballot just yet. does that mean that, if biden is really serious about this, he should jump in? >> you know what was remarkable, just yesterday seeing those images of vice president biden sitting behind pope francis, you know. vice president biden really going through a personal struggle right now with the loss of his son. and so i think that he has a really tough decision and personal decision to make. >> oh, absolutely. all right, kevin, thanks so much for joining us always a pleasure on a friday. >> thank you, betty.
