will speak directly to the world's most powerful leaders but it is his afternoon meeting that could have the most far-reaching consequences. edward lawrence is in washington for us today. good morning to you. how important is this meeting with russian president vladimir putin? >> betty, the meeting with the russian president could be the most important news of the trip. the tour at odds but president obama hopes the message of unity to the u.n. will be heard by russian president vladimir putin. the president spoke at the sustainable development goal summit at the u.n. sunday, ahead of an address to the entire body today. he high righted unity among nations. >> today we set aside the skepticism and we lift up the hope that is available to us through collective action. >> reporter: isis will be the top issue when the president meets with russian president vladimir putin face to face, after his speech today.

u.n. ambassador samantha powers says with problems in syria because of isis and the ukraine, the president sees an opportunity. >> the president believed it would be irresponsible to let this occasion in which the two leaders would be in the same city pass without trying to test to see whether progress could be made on these seemingly intra intractable cises. >> when you look at the final product and you look at what the president has been saying and you look at the poll at thises he's been implementing, it really makes me wonder is it the analysts that are actually getting the intelligence wrong or being politicized somewhere in the process in. >> reporter: the president is expected to ask for a joint effort against the growing isis threat, as well as a transition in the syrian government. france has already joined the fight, conducting its first air strike since syria on an isis training camp. the president is also expected to use his nuclear deal with iran in his u.n. speech as an example of what can happen when

the world works together. the deal is highly criticized in the u.s. >> thanks for that. democratic presidential front-runner hillary clinton says she's is trying to be as transparent as possible about her use of a private e-mail server while she was secretary of state. during an interview on "meet the press" she cold chuck todd if she could have done it all over again she would have used a separate e-mail account. >> i have tried to the best of my ability to be able to respond and if people are uncertain if they have concerns about these questions around the e-mails, it is their choice to say that's going to influence how i think about the election. i understand that. i get it. >> her husband, former president bill clinton, talked about the controversy on cnn. he said hillary is sorry that using her personal e-mail caused all this confusion. clinton also discussed donald trump and the likelihood that he could become the republican presidential nominee. >> could trump be the nominee?

>> i think so. how do i know? i don't understand any of it very well. look, i've been out of politics a long time. >> donald trump talked about his tax plan on cbs's "60 minutes" last night, part of which includes increasing taxes on the wealthy. >> but republicans don't raise taxes. >> we're not raising taxes. >> what kind of republican are you? >> the only -- well i'm a pretty good republican but i'll tell you this, i have some differences. i don't want to have certain people on wall street get away with paying no tax. >> a new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll shows trump and ben carson leading the pack. 21% siding with trump, carson is right behind him with 20%. ben carson isn't shooting down kanye west becoming president. he said he's "certainly willing to give him a chance." carly fiorina had a bit of a scare at a campaign event last

person gets there. >> on sunday, house minority leader nancy pelosi reacted to the news of boehner resigning, said she's not quite sure if she'll miss him. >> we can agree to disagree without being negative about each other, but yes, i don't know if i'll miss him. we just work. >> pelosi said the whole idea of the speaker resigning is the sign of the disarray in the republican party. john boehner is set to step down september 30th. >> right about now, pope francis is landing back in rome after his three-city u.s. tour but before he left there were some funny moments. he stopped his procession to kiss a baby dressed like the pope himself. how cute is that? he also met with an argentinean family that drove 13,000 miles in a volkswagen to meet him. the pope's reaction? president obama, then addressing a joint session of congress, the first pontiff ever afforded that honor. he continued to navigate the tight rope between politics and religion as he traveled to new york, speaking before the united nations general assembly. francis, addressing the most powerful leaders in the world. but still, always taking time for the most vulnerable among us. it was those moments face to face with the people that will define his historic visit. ready smile, a knowing glance, stopping his motorcade to bless the children. they were the times francis seemed to cherish the most. closing out his american tour in philadelphia, focused on family, faith and service, and offering one final blessing. >> my god bless you all. god bless america. >> reporter: jay gray, nbc news,

hopefully you caught it. volkswagen's own staff and a supplier were warned years ago about a software for the emissions test. the software affected engines in 11 million diesel cars worldwide. it is suspending the research heads at its vw, audi and porsche brands. jetblue is adding a charter flight to havana ahead the expected opening of commercial travel. nonstop flight every tuesday starting december 1st in partnership with the travel company licensed by the u.s. government. shell is pulling the plug on exploring oil in waters off alaska. it failed to find enough crude in the area. shell's unsuccessful campaign could cost it $4 billion. bet betty, back over to you. >> thank you. football night in america, to the motor city we go.

this is mississippi's gulf coast, heavy rains turn the streets of pass cagoula into rivers. remarkable footage, remember last friday at this time we had reports of a tornado. this is video of inside the tornado from johns island, south carolina, home security video from a house and this was an f2 tornado with winds over 100 miles per hour. pretty amazing stuff. thankfully no one was injured or killed in the tornado. over the weekend, heavy rains were down in the gulf, that continues this morning. mobile, alabama, picked up seven inches of rain, that's as much rain as we've in the northeast in three months. we'll continue to watch the threat of heavy rain panama city down towards tampa and that's a squeeze play we'll watch two areas of low pressure, one in the gulf, a little area of low pressure off the south carolina coast.

20, 30 years they will never, ever raise taxes. most have taken a pledge to never raise taxes but donald trump has never come up through state government and taken that pledge. he's not a politician. what i see is both parties like the idea of lowered taxes and think the rich are getting off too easy. economic populism is popular on both sides. >> even the base is going to like this, even the wealthy, the rich people taking advantage of are going to like this plan? >> a lot of republican establishments are not going to like the plans but trump's base not necessarily the classic gop race will see it as a sign of his aleenlgian to them over the party. >> gotcha. his plan also includes going after businesses that set up shop overseas to avoid some of these higher taxes, right? >> it is popular on both sides of the aisle but no one seems to have an idea how they'll get it done. >> it's talked but but kind of where it falls dead.

>> exactly. everyone supports it but no one gets it done. this is the trumpian part of his campaign, he says i'm going to do the tax cuts and various hikes and reputation, but he doesn't tell us how. >> a businessman in action. we'll see how the action plays out. new poll has trump neck and neck with ben carson. what is causing carson to surge in the polls? >> it's weird to look at the two candidates they're so different. trump is bombastic, carson quiet and intimate guy but they're both outsiders. i think that's what we're seeing is people want a candidate who has never been elected. >> they want something different, that's for sure. all right, thank you so much, we appreciate it. today might be a dream come true for all you beer drinkers everywhere. we'll explain next.
