of the stage collapsed as she was speaking. and hillary clinton claimed she's handed over all work-related e-mails from her time as secretary of state but a new chain of e-mails casts doubt as the drip drip drip of stories continues. it's 5:30 on the east coast, 2:30 out west, this is "way too early." ♪ good morning. it's monday september 28th. i'm jonathan capehart. the slow drip of reports on hillary clinton's i mails continues. new string of e-mails emerged between the secretary of state and general petraeus. here's what she told chuck todd over the weekend on "meet the
2:31 am
press." >> everything we had access to you was out there. the e-mail train was on a government server. from my perspective, we have a very thorough review process that we conducted, and my attorneys supervised it they went through everything and what we had available at the time was turned over. there was a transition period. i went that he focused on my e-mail account to be clear here. >> let me stop you there. >> yes. >> you say you weren't focused on it. >> right. >> this seemed to be to put an e-mail server at your house is a complicated thing. >> but it was already there. it had been there for years, it is the system that my husband's personal office used when he got out of the white house, and so it was sitting there in the basement. it was not any trouble at all. i know there are a lot of people who are questioning that but the fact is that it was there. i added my account to it it apparently took a little time to do that and so there was about
2:32 am
a month where i didn't have everything already on the server, and we went back tried to recover whatever we could recover, and i think it's also fair to say that you know there's some things about this that i just can't control. i can't control the technical aspects of it. i'm not by any means a technical expert. i relied on people who were. >> it has the feel of a drip drip drip. can you reassure democrats that there's nothing else here? >> well it is like a drip drip, drip and that's why i said there's only so much that i can control, but what i have tried to do in explaining this is to provide more transparency and more information than anybody that i'm aware of who has ever served in the government, and i'm happy to do that because i want these questions to be answered. >> we haven't heard much from bill clinton this election season but here's what he said of his wife's handling of questions about her e-mail use and why it's turned into as big of a story as it has. >> you can't complain.
2:33 am
this is not -- this say contact sport. they're not givening the job away and people who want to race wanted her to drop some and people in the other party desperately wanted it because she's already put out more positions on more issues and said how she would pay it than i think all the others combined based on the, the republicans based on the two debates i saw. >> but you think it's a republican plot really? >> no i'm not going there, because that's what -- it's not a plot makes it sound like it's a secret. no. i think that there are lots of people who wanted there to be a race for different reasons. >> and the new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll shows clinton still losing ground to senator bernie sanders. clinton is seven points ahead of sanders, 42% to 35% in a race
2:34 am
that includes vice president joe biden, who takes 17% of the vote. clinton's lead grows to 15 points without the vice president in the race but that's down from clinton's 34-point lead over sanders in july and a 60-point lead as recently as june. donald trump has led in every national republican poll taken in the last 78 days but now he is facing his slimmest lead yet, the new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll shows trump leading dr. ben carson by just one point, 21% to 20%, a ten-point increase for carson since july. senator marco rubio and carly fiorina seeing significant gains, tied for third at 11 points each and jeb bush comes in fifth, dropping seven points since july when he was in third place. this as donors tell "the washington post" that bush is entering a critical phase of his bid as fund-raisers say he faces defections unless he rebounds in the polls. yesterday bush dismissed any

nervousness. >> look, it is a marathon and we just started advertising. i'm confident we get good response, we got a great ground game in these early states. i'm confident i can win new hampshire for sure. i'm running the heart campaign running with heart and we're making great progress. the polls really don't matter they don't filter out the people that aren't going to vote. it's just i know it's an obsession because it frames the debate for people for that week but i'm in it for the long haul. >> donald trump will unveil his tax plan today in a press conference at trump tower. but first he offered a preview of his proposal in an interview last night on "60 minutes." >> who are you going to raise taxes on? >> if you look at actual raise, some very wealthy are going to be raised, some people that are getting unfair deductions are going to be raised but oversaul a tremendous imis enive to grow the economy and we're going to take in the same or more money and i think we're going to have something that's going to be spectacular. >> republicans don't raise taxes.
2:36 am
>> we're not raising taxes. >> what kind of republican are you? >> the only -- well i'm a pretty good republican but i tell you this, i have some differences. i don't want to have certain people on wall street get away with paying no tax. >> carly fiorina may be rising in the polls. part of the stage collapsed around her speaking at an event in texas yesterday. she was mid sentence when this happened. fiorina was addressing women business owners in san antonio when the curtain behind her gave way. you can see several women rushing to shield the presidential candidate, as she warned others around her to be careful. no one was hurt and fiorina even cracked a joke when someone yelled out "trump." >> okay trump, hillary, it could have been lots of people. anyway -- >> fiorina continued to speak and took questions for another half hour. earlier in the day fiorina

clashed with chuck todd on "meet the press." she stood by her description of a scene in one of the videos claiming to expose planned parenthood and also refused to say directly if she thinks republicans in congress should force a government shutdown to defund the organization. her description in the last gop debate of a scene she saw in the on tie planned parent hood video has been widely disputed. >> no evidence the scene you described exists. are you willing to concede that you exaggerated that scene? >> no. not at all. that scene absolutely does exist, and that voice saying what i said they were saying we'ring if to keep it alive exists as well. here's the thing. yesterday i was -- >> you saw that moment on the tape? >> yes, and i would challenge planned parenthood here is the deal, yesterday i was protested by planned parenthood people throwing condoms at me. i don't know what that has to do
2:38 am
with this. they're trying to distract the american people from the hideous reality that planned parenthood is aborting fetuses alive to harvest their brains and other body parts. that is a fact. i believe if the president of the united states and democrats are willing to stand up and defend for what is roughly a $500 million to $ 00 million line item in a budget, if they are willing to stand up and defend this practice and shut down the government over it then let them explain it to the american people. >> so you want this showdown. you think republican leaders in congress should force this shutdown. >> there are a variety of ways to deal with this but i believe this is something we must stand up and fight for. >> now to house speaker john boehner's stunning announcement friday he's resigning the speakership and from congress at the end of october. in his first interview since that announcement boehner is

speaking out in more blunt terms about a faction of the republican conference. >> well are they unrealistic about what can be done in government? that's -- >> absolutely unrealistic. but you know the bible says beware of false prophets. and there are people out there, you know spreading noise about how much can get done. i mean, this whole idea we'll shut down the government to get rid of obamacare in 2013 it's plain never had a chance. we have groups here in town members of the house and senate here in town who whip people into a frenzy believing they can accomplish things that they know, they know are never going to happen. >> is ted cruz a false prophet? >> you can pick a lot of names out. i'll let you choose them. >> you don't debate that assertion? >> i'll refer you to my remark at a fund-raiser i made in august in colorado.
2:40 am
>> let me ask you -- by the way you called ted i believe the word you used was jackass. >> i'm referring to that shame remark. >> all right. >> this comes as our new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll, 72% say they're dissatisfied with his party's congressional leadership. pope francis is back in rome this morning after wrapping up his historic six-day three-city tour of the united states. yesterday the event bringing a much more celebrateory feel than the one earlier in the day when the pope sat down with the victims of sexual abuse by priests and others in the church. francis announced to a group of bishops that he had met with five abuse victims earlier this morning, telling them "god weeps for the sexual apuss of children." promising that those responsible will be held accountable. the pope then visited a local jail where he greeted about 100

inmates personally. during his remarks, he told them "i am here as a pastor but above all as a brother to share your situation and to make it my own." it's a hectic day ahead at the united nations within the space of two hours, the presidents of the united states france china, russia and iran will all take their turn to address the 70th session of the general assembly. president obama spoke yesterday and plans to meet face to face on the sidelines with several counterparts most notably russian's president vladimir putin who is giving his first address to the assembly in a decade. they're expected to address u.s. concerns about russia's military buildup in syria. in an interview for "60 minutes" putin ruled out sending troops to the region calling intelligence reports to the contrary anti-syrian propaganda.
2:42 am
>> translator: russia will not participate in any troop operations in the territory of syria or in any other states at least we don't plan on it right now. but we are considering intensifying our work with both president assad and with our partners in other countries. >> the two leaders are set to talk after putin's address this morning. let's turn to business where it's a big week for the auto industry, as tesla prepares to roll its first suv and volkswagen continues wattling reports about rigging emissions tests. steve sedrick joins us live from london. >> this time out of germany itself, a couple of publications had some interesting news when the company itself new these emissions were illegal. frankfurt [ speaking in foreign language ] which cited a vw supervisory report had an internal report

about this from technicians in 2011 and where else sontag said the supply of bosh talked about this as early as 2007. the national highway traffic safety administration the regulator overseeing the replacement of air bags takata could have bigger recalls going on including volkswagen and tesla. >> steve n other auto news you mentioned tesla, the first suv fully electric, i think it's called model x, is almost here? >> yes, it's a bit late. it was due to come out in 2013 but technically very adept. the model x could be very fast zero to 60 in 3.8 seconds unless ludicrous mode 3.3 seconds, falcon wings. the different between the falcon and a gull wing i don't know. it sounds better. $132,000 it starts up to $147,000 and just one more story
