championship league series. it's 5:30 on the east coast, 2:30 out west and this is "way too early." good morning, everybody, it's wednesday, october 14th, i'm amy holmes. we begin this morning at the wynn hotel in las vegas, where last night the five democratic candidates for president came face-to-face on the debate stage for the first time. it was the question everyone knew was coming that produced the moment of the night. here's hillary clinton addressing the controversy surrounding her private e-mail server. >> well, i've taken responsibility for it. i did say it was a mistake. what i did was allowed by the state department, but it wasn't the best choice. but let's just take a minute here and point out, that this

committee is basically an arm of the republican national committee. it is a partisan vehicle, as admitted by the house republican majority leader, mr. mccarthy, to drive down my poll numbers, big surprise, and that's what they have attempted to do. i am still standing. i am happy to be part of this debate. and i intend to keep talking about the issues that matter to the american people. >> let me say -- let me say something that may not be great politics. but i think the secretary is right. and that is that the american people are sick and tired of hearing about your damn e-mails. >> thank you. me, too. me, too. >> you know. the american people want to know whether we're going to have a democracy or an oligarchy as a result of citizens united.
2:32 am
enough of the e-mails. let's talk about the real issues facing america. >> thank you, bernie. thank you. >> big applause. and the candidates may have been cordial when it came to clinton's e-mails. but things got a little more contentious on the issue of gun control. >> is bernie sanders tough enough on guns? >> no. not at all. i think that we have to look at the fact that we lose 90 people a day from gun violence. this has gone on too long, and it's time the entire country stood up against the nra. the majority of our country -- supports background checks, and even the majority of gun owners do. senator sanders did vote five times against the brady bill. since it was passed more than 2 million prohibited purchases have been prevented. >> as a senator from a rural state, what i can tell secretary clinton, that all the shouting
2:33 am
in the world is not going to do what i would hope all of us want, and that is keep guns out of the hands of people who should not have those guns. and end this horrible violence that we are seeing. i come from a rural state. and the views on gun control in rural states are different than in urban states. whether we like it or not. >> senator, it's not about rural -- senator, it's not about rural and urban. have you ever been to the eastern shore? have you ever been to western maryland? we were able to pass this and still respect the hunting traditions of people who live in our rural areas. and we did it by leading with principle. not by pandering to the nra. and backing down to the nra. >> -- voting record, i don't think i'm pandering. but you have not been in the united states congress. >> well, maybe that's a healthy thing. >> -- check it out. >> things may have gotten heated but sanders seemed to regain his footing later on in the evening when the debate turned to a core

issue of his campaign, financial regulations. >> in the 1990s, when i had the republican leadership, and wall street spending billions of dollars in lobbying, when the clinton administration, when alan greenspan said what a great idea it would be to allow these huge banks to merge, bernie sanders fought them. and helped lead the opposition to deregulation. >> i respect the passion and intensity. i represented wall street as a senator from new york, and i went to wall street in december of 2007, before the big crash that we had, and i basically said, cut it out. and my plan would have the potential of actually sending the executives to jail. nobody went to jail after $100 billion in fines were paid. and, would give regulators the authority to go after the big banks. >> in my view, secretary clinton, you do not, congress does not regulate wall street. wall street regulates congress.
2:35 am
and we have got to break off these banks. going to them and saying, please do the right thing -- >> no, that's not what -- >> is kind of naive. >> and according to the clock, hillary clinton dominated talk time. "the new york times" reports she spoke at least three times as long as lincoln chafee, and when she was asked directly about changing course on some positions, she may have provided more fodder for democratic opponents, and conservative admakers. >> you're against same-sex marriage, now you're for it. you defended president obama's immigration policies. now you say they're too harsh. you supported his trade deal dozens of times. you even called it the gold standard. now suddenly last week, you're against it. will you say anything to get elected? >> well, actually i have been very consistent over the course of my entire life. i have always fought for the same values and principles. but like most human beings, including those of us who run for office, i do absorb new information. i do look at what's happening in the world. you know, take the trade deal.
2:36 am
i did say when i was secretary of state three years ago that i hoped it would be the gold standard. it was just finally negotiated last week. and in looking at it, it didn't meet my standard. you know, everybody on this stage has changed a position or two. we've been around a cumulative quite some period of time. you know, we know that if you are learning, you're going to change your position. i never took a position on keystone until i took a position on keystone. >> polls of the democratic race taken just hours before the debate show clinton is still in a strong position. at 45%, clinton has a 20-point lead over senator bernie sanders in a race that includes vice president biden. sanders at 25 and biden pulling 19%. with biden out of the race, clinton's margin grows to 26 points. sanders with 28%, and every other contender in low single

digits. but the poll also finds clinton in a weaker position in the general election where she's losing to every top republican candidate nationally. the number of democratic debates ahead of the 2016 election has drawn criticism from some members of the democratic party. former governor martin o'malley briefly taking attention away from his democratic opponents to take aim at the party chair debbie wasserman schultz last night. >> i see the chair of the dnc here. look how glad we are, actually, to be talking about the issues that matter most to people around their kitchen table. we need to get wages to go up, college more affordable -- >> thank you, governor. >> we need to make america 100% clean electric by 2050. >> -- for more debates to give the american people the opportunity to hear from these presidential candidates, to listen to what they've got to say. >> and the vice chair of the dnc, congresswoman gabbard made headlines after saying she'd been disinvited from last

night's event because she said publicly there should be more debates. >> you know, i was on your network, msnbc, talking about "meet the press" daily about how we do need more debates. the same thing that i've been saying now for several weeks. and the very next day got a message saying that if i'm going to continue talking about that, that i shouldn't go to the debate. it's not surprising to me that she is saying things that aren't true. >> you disinvited her from coming here? >> well, first that's simply not true. herein lies the problem. you and i are now talking about tulsi gabbard rather than concentrating on our candidates. >> meanwhile, republican presidential candidate mike huckabee on twitter last night, and raising some eyebrows. at one point huckabee tweeting quote, racism exists, because we have a sin problem in america, not a skin problem. four minutes later he tweeted, quote, i trust bernie sanders with my tax dollars like i trust a north korean chef with my

a former pakistani defense minister appearing to confirm yesterday that his country knew that al qaeda leader osama bin laden was in pakistan at the time of his death in 2011. while it's widely assumed that parts of pakistan's military and civilian leadership were aware of bin laden's location, pakistani officials have always maintained that they didn't know until the u.s. raid. when asked if the pakistani president, the army and others in both the civilian and military chain of command had prior information about osama's location in pakistan, the defense minister's answer was, quote, yeah. now, let's turn to some business. and wall street where u.s. stocks dropped, snapping a seven-day winning streak for the dow as earnings season kicks into high gear. cnbc's nancy hugrave joins us live from london. first up for the wall street banks with jpmorgan. how did they fare?
2:46 am
>> that's right, amy. well it wasn't such good news out of jpmorgan chase. they did miss on both earnings and revenue, even though earnings managed to actually increase. but the real concern here was on revenue. they reported about a 6% drop in revenue on the period and a lot of this was due to both the market volatility and a hit on trading revenue that was largely due to the low interest rates. and it's expected that that low interest rate environment will continue, as you know, with the fed expected to stay on hold for rates for the foreseeable future. and the cfo at jpmorgan warning that analysts may be a little bit too optimistic about the next quarter. so that will cause some investor concerns, especially as we have several other big banks reporting earnings this week. today we hear from bank of america and wells fargo. i should mention with jpmorgan there was one bit of silver lining here and that was on mortgages. for the consumer bank division that was the only one really to report an increase in income and a lot of that came down to mortgages. the bank said it issued a 41% increase in mortgages on the
