good morning. it's thursday, october 15th, i'm jonathan capehart in washington. we begin this morning overseas, where a wave of violent attacks are once again pushing tensions between israelis and palestinians to the breaking point. even as israeli authorities began implementing emergency security measures yesterday, a pair of new attacks in jerusalem left two dead and one injured. one of those deadly encounters played out before the eyes of our nbc news team near the entrance to jerusalem's old city. nbc's ayman mohyeldin witnessed it all and has this report. and a warning, some of these images may be disturbing. >> reporter: it happened in an instant. in front of our camera. a man with a knife runs past a security checkpoint, and is shot dead by israeli police. the knife clearly visible in his hand.
2:31 am
>> he pulled out a knife, and police officers managed to neutralize the terrorist. >> reporter: he was identified as 19-year-old basel sidar a palestinian from the west bank. just hours later, at jerusalem's central bus terminal, another palestinian man stabs and injures a 72-year-old israeli woman. he, too, is shot dead by police. israel is on high alert. hundreds of additional security forces called up. police checkpoints increased. palestinian neighborhoods sealed off restricting movement. israel is warning that bodies of attackers will not be returned to families, and their homes will be demolished. but palestinians are also mourning. 30 dead in recent weeks. some of them attackers but many of the killed were protesters. the funeral of one in bethlehem was followed by more clashes with israeli police. palestinians claim a double standard. that israel cracks down on palestinian attackers, but goes easy on israeli extremists.
2:32 am
their anger, fuelled by social media and viral videos like this one, allegedly showing an injured 13-year-old palestinian left to bleed. israel released its own video showing knife wielding palestinians. both sides feel under siege. israel by attacks, and palestinians by what they consider an occupying power. while the war on the ground continues to rage on unabated in syria, u.s. and russian officials now say they're getting closer to a deal to avoid confrontations between their warplanes flying over syrian skies. the development comes as moscow acknowledged that one of its fighter jets came within a couple of miles of a u.s. aircraft on saturday. russian airstrikes continued to hammer targets in hama and aleppo in support of a syrian army offensive aimed at reversing rebel gains. and "the new york times" reports those strikes are showing off just how modernized russia's military has become. they have involved aircraft that

are being combat tested for the first time and ship-based cruise missiles which some analysts say surpass the u.s. equivalent. donald trump had a heavy day of campaigning, and media appearances yesterday. in an interview with the hill, he said the secret service should be giving him protection, noting that president obama had agents at this point in the cycle in 2008. quote, i want to put them on notice, because they should have a liability. personally, i think if obama were doing as well as me he would have had secret service earlier. i have by far the biggest crowds. trump jokingly added, they're in no rush because i'm a republican. they don't give, expletive. trump later clarified, quote, of course i don't think they'd want anything to happen. a spokeswoman for the department of homeland security said, it had -- hadn't received an official request for protection, which is then determined after consulting with an advisory committee that includes house and senate leaders from both parties. president obama received secret service protection the earliest of any presidential candidate,

followed by ted kennedy, whose two brothers were assassinated, and herman cain and jesse jackson. hillary clinton, of course, received her campaign secret service in november 2007. though she was already under protection from having served as first lady. and yesterday, trump spoke with nbc news correspondent katy tur about what he's learned so far. >> so what have you learned for the next 118 days? >> i think i could be perhaps a little bit -- i can watch my words a little bit, maybe, be a little bit more politically correct. but to be honest with you i think one of the reasons i am doing well is because i don't want to -- being politically correct takes a lot of time. it takes a lot of effort. i can be more politically correct than anybody that you've ever interviewed. but it takes a lot of time to do it. and you're going around, in different circles, and you're never getting there. we don't have time for it anymore. >> trump also hit the campaign trail in virginia. crowd estimates were between 5,000 and 7,000 people at the richmond raceway complex where
2:35 am
protesters briefly interrupted. but trump rolled on, offering praise for hillary clinton for opposing the trans-pacific partnership, and tied it to the investigation around her private e-mail server. >> i have to hand it to hillary clinton. i have to hand it -- you can all be angry. i have to hand it to her. it took great courage for her to go against president obama and the trade pact. you know why? because maybe she gets indicted! because -- because she is being totally protected by the democrats, because what she did is illegal. now, i'd want it to go a fair investigation, let everything be fair. but, what's happened is absolutely crazy. >> trump also went on a fence against bernie sanders yesterday beginning by telling "morning

joe" the senator made a quote big mistake by dismissing the issue of clinton's e-mails. he added more in an interview with nbc's katy tur. >> bernie had a moment last night where he defended hillary clinton. he came off as magnanimous. could you see yourself ever being that way to one of your competitors? >> yes, i could. and i could be very mag ma'am muss if i have to be. but bernie made a mistake. he got a great couple of seconds. but he took a situation that's a very serious situation where hillary is being investigated by the fbi and he gave it away. he just gave it away. he can never bring it up again. and it's not like he's winning. he's losing. he's losing actually big if you look countrywide. so i think he made a mistake. >> i watched hillary last night with we're going to give this, we're going to give that, the poor woman. she's got to give everything away, because this maniac that was standing on her right is giving everything away. so she's following! that's what's happening! this socialist/communist, okay? nobody wants to say it.
2:37 am
no. >> and that's not all. trump's campaign also took to instagram to hit sanders, using video of the senator losing his microphone to black lives matter activists in august. >> the world is a dangerous place. we need a tough, strong leader. and it's not this guy. the world is a dangerous place. we need a tough, strong leader. and it's not this guy. >> one day after the first democratic presidential debate, senator sanders traveled to california for a series of speeches and fund raisers. his day ended at a night club in downtown hollywood, where they reportedly served cocktails

story. but if we talk about why the middle class is disappearing, and almost all new income and wealth is going to the top 1%, not a big story. so what the political revolution is, is forcing a debate, not about trivia, but about the real issues. >> my favorite video of the day. sanders also stopped by the set of the "ellen" show where he was caught dancing. getting down. look at him busting a move. during an interview that will air later today, he addressed his comment in tuesday night's debate about hillary clinton's e-mail. >> you, i think what you said about hillary and the e-mails, you said this may not be political, and i think that's the exact thing that people are sick of, is people being political. i think people just need to hear you say what you feel. >> i think that's absolutely right. i think, ellen, you know, you hit the nail on the head, and i will tell you, i have been in many, many campaigns in my

millions of dollars and tons of time. >> clinton's campaign says it shows the committee has zero credibility left. and here's what the candidate told nbc affiliate kusa yesterday. >> i'll be appearing before the congress next week, and answering a lot of questions that they may have. although, now it's clear that this whole effort was set up for political partisan purposes, not to try to get to any useful end. >> the chairman of the committee, trey gowdy, has vehemently denied the investigation is politically motivated. protests erupted at baltimore city hall overnight. it happened during a city council hearing, committee members were voting to confirm interim baltimore police commissioner kevin davis as the city's top cop. a group of demonstrators took to the balcony of city hall and delayed the voting. chanting no justice, no peace. during the hearing, both davis -- davis told both council

wage to $10 an hour from $9 an hour. that move was largely welcomed by proponents who have been pressuring walmart to do this for a long time now. it will weigh on its operating expenses. keep in mind that walmart has been trying to play catch-up, fend off increasing competition from amazon. so now going to make a big boost in investment into its online presence, as well. all of that weighing on expenses and the stock continues to be down in after-hours premarket trade. and it's also had a ripple effect in some of the other retailers, we saw the likes of target and costco and best buy dipping on the session yesterday, as well. another interesting story moving into the business space today will be an announcement from uber that it is increasing its delivery services. it started off as a test pilot program in new york but now uber will be taking its delivery service to san francisco, and chicago, for same-day delivery from businesses to consumers. and that, of course, could present a competitive threat for likes of fedex and u.p.s. jonathan? >> wow, nancy hulgrave, live from london, thank you.

time now for sports. former nba and reality tv star lamar odom remains in the hospital after being found unconscious at a nevada brothel on tuesday. a sample of odom's blood was obtained using a search warrant, but results from toxicology reports have not yet been revealed. investigators say no illegal drugs were found in odom's suite. and the brothel's famed owner dennis hof said his staff saw no evidence of illicit drug use. enews that is owned by nbc news universal says odom is on a ventilator after suffering at least one stroke. and the sources said they'd been told by medical personnel that multiple drugs were found in his system, and that he had suffered brain damage, but is not brain dead. police yesterday described odom's condition when paramedics arrived at the scene. >> he was unconscious, but breathing. he had blood coming from his nose, and his mouth, along with a white substance. >> kim kardashian and kris
