thanks for joining us today, i'm betty nguyen. we do have some breaking news. shots fired at a college campus. this time in tennessee state university. that is in nashville. authorities say the shooting happened in an outdoor courtyard. it was apparently prompted by a dispute over a dice game. one man was killed. two others were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. police are still investigating but right now there's no indication of an active shooter. this does come just a week after three people were wounded by gunfire at a nearby off campus party. next to texas, which is facing a deluge of water from ongoing storms. in odessa, over three inches fell in just a few hours, leading to 30 swift water rescues yesterday morning. in lubbock, overloaded storm drains, they flooded streets, over 2,000 customers were without power in midland. and the national weather service has issued a flash flood watch for the dallas-ft. worth area through saturday. our own bill karins will have much more on this. plus that category 5 hurricane making its way from mexico. right now, though, want to talk about this. marathon 11-hour testimony.

that's in the rear view mirror. hillary clinton is looking to get back on the campaign trail. the house select committee, though, was hearing the benghazi testimony ended late last night after it was over, chairman trey gowdy couldn't identify anything new that he had learned. saying he'd need to read the transcripts. but yesterday was not without fireworks. nbc's andrea mitchell reports. >> reporter: it was supposed to be about benghazi. but it soon dissolved into bickering. >> i don't care if he sent it by morse code, carrier pigeon, smoke signals, what is relevant is that he was sending information to the secretary of state. >> will the gentleman yield? >> i'll be happy to but you need to make sure the entire record is correct. >> that's exactly what i want to do. >> well then go ahead. >> reporter: while they argued the star witness tried to stay above the fray, unlike in 2013 -- >> what difference at this point does it make? >> reporter: this time, hillary clinton was poised, practiced, pushing back with put-downs.

that, madam secretary. >> reporter: it was clinton to spent the most time talking about the victims of the attack. >> you know, i would imagine i thought more about what happened than all of you put together. i've lost more sleep than all of you put together. >> reporter: information officer and air force veteran sean smith. cia officers tyrone woods and glen doherty. and ambassador chris stevens. >> i stood next to president obama as marines carried his casket, and those of the other three americans, off the plane at andrews air force base. >> that was andrea mitchell reporting. and set your dvrs tonight, richle maddow sits down with hillary clinton for her first interview following her 11-hour marathon testimony before the benghazi committee. a u.s. soldier has been killed in combat in iraq for the first time in four years. it happened during a hostage rescue mission carried out with kurdish forces, a key u.s. ally in the fight against isis. nbc chief foreign correspondent richard engel has the dramatic details.

>> reporter: the raid was supposed to rescue kurdish hostages. like these. held by isis in cages. u.s. intelligence have learned they were about to be executed. so when the kurds, washington's closest allies in iraq, asked for help rescuing them, u.s. forces agreed. at 2:00 a.m., america's special ops and kurdish forces in five u.s. helicopters, headed for the town of hawija landing near an isis prison on the outskirts of town. sources say isis had already dug mass graves for their hostages. kurdish troops stormed in. about 20 isis guards inside fought back. so the u.s. troops, there to assist, guard the perimeter and communicate with u.s. aircraft above, decided to step in to protect the pentagon says, their kurdish allies and the hostages. about 15 isis guards were killed. but not before the u.s. military says an isis fighter shot one

american commando, so far unidentified, who later died of his injuries. the first american to die in combat in iraq since u.s. forces withdrew four years ago. but the pentagon insists this was a unique situation. >> u.s. forces are not in an active combat mission in iraq. and that's -- i can say that directly. >> reporter: when the fight was over, the americans and kurds loaded the freed hostages, 75 of them according to u.s. officials, and at least 5 captured isis guards, on the helicopters, and left. >> richard engel reports that the freed hostages turned out not to be kurds. about 20 of them were kidnapped iraqi security forces, and there were a number of so-called isis defectors. today is a pivotal crossroads in the 2016 election season. on the same day we mark 100 days until the iowa caucus, donald trump has now officially been leading in major national polls for 100 days, which is why this is so appropriate. a new quinnipiac university poll

reveals ben carson has overtaken trump in iowa. go figure. that prompted this since deleted retweet from trump. ben carson is now leading in the polls in iowa. too much monsanto in the corn creates issues in the brain? perhaps in an effort to not insult iowa's proudest item, the trump campaign blamed that retweet on a, quote, young intern. ben carson will appear on nbc's "meet the press" this coming sunday. trump is also trying to turn the tables on another issue. he is disavowing nine unauthorized trump super pacs, demanding that they return money raised and calling on other candidates to do the same. he's trying to get out from under a day's worth of "washington post" reporting that links his campaign manager with the make america great again super pac. yesterday the man behind that group shut it down to eliminate those accusations. potentially bad news for another gop candidate. chris christie. and the state of new jersey. both are being sued by the nurse who was detained and quarantined during the ebola panic. an aclu filed -- the aclu filed

a suit on her behalf and they claim that she was held illegally against her will. and just a few hours lincoln chafee says he'll address the future of his campaign at the dnc women's forum. it's unknown if he will withdraw from the 2016 race. bond has been set for the suspect in a road rage shooting that killed a 4-year-old girl. tony torrez appeared via video from jail yesterday. but did not enter a plea. the judge agreed to the $650,000 cash-only bond due to the violent nature of the charges. torrez is accused of opening fire on the pickup truck carrying 4-year-old lilly garcia. she was hit in the head and later died at the hospital. during torrez's appearance judge chris schultz had this to say. >> this is possibly one of the most wanton and atrocious acts it's alleged i think in the history of this city. >> he went on to say the weight of evidence against torrez is substantial, and that torrez failed to appear in court for a previous felony charge. eight minutes after the hour. time to get down to business. cnbc's landen dowdy is here on

this friday morning. good morning. >> good friday morning to you. the markets look to end the week on a positive note, stocks rallying thursday with the major averages closing at some of their highest levels since the august market turmoil, with stark gains driven by positive earnings. the dow closing up 320 points led by mcdonald's. the biggest dow contributor thanks to a big earnings beat. and mark zuckerberg has a new venture. he and his wife priscilla chan are launching a private elementary school in east palo alto. the school set to open in august 2016 will target about 700 of the most disadvantaged residents in the neighborhood. and amazon ceo jeff bezos is now the third wealthiest person in the country, with bill gates and warren buffett ahead of him. that's after shares of amazon jumped 10% in extended trading after the company reported a surprise earnings beat. this increase raised his fortune by almost $5 billion. >> not bad for a day's work, right? i'd take it

welcome back to "first look." amazing, intensification over the last 24 hours. and we are now talking about what is going to be a historically devastating storm to people from manzanillo to purt vallarta, mexico. this storm is the third strongest storm we've ever recorded on our planet. that includes the big super typhoons they get out there in the areas of the eastern and the western pacific. this has 200-mile-per-hour winds. i mean that is incredible. it's the strongest storm we've ever seen in the atlantic, or in areas just off of mexico in what we consider here the eastern pacific. it has a fresh ear down to 880 mill bars. one of the lowest pressures ever measured in any storm and the hurricane air force airplane was just in it so we know that this is an official measurement. this storm is going to make

landfall in about 12 hours from right now. it doesn't have time to weaken. the strongest storm ever to make landfall was typhoon haiyan in 2013 in the philippines. that had 190-mile-per-hour winds. this is expected at landfall to have 205-mile-per-hour winds. this would be the strongest landfalling storm ever in the history of our country. not our country, our planet, that we've ever seen. of course we go back about 200 years. puerto vallarta, manzanillo are the areas of concern. i can't express enough the pictures we're going to see out of there. eventually some of the rainfall does make it to texas. compared to what texas is going to be dealing with and mexico, it's no comparison. >> strongest storm -- >> strongest storm to make landfall anywhere on our planet. that we know in our recorded human history. that's what mexico is going to be dealing with. >> all right, thank you. now to some breaking news out of france, at least 42 people are dead and several others injured after a bus and truck collide and catch fire in southwest france. the bus was carrying mostly seniors. paul ryan has announced that he

coming up on 19 minutes past the hour. there is a new challenger for the top spot in the republican primary race and he is nothing like donald trump. mild mannered and soft spoken, ben carson has been quietly climbing the polls for weeks. and as we told you earlier, the latest quinnipiac poll in iowa shows him with a healthy lead. he said his appeal is his popularity with women. msnbc's jane timm has more. >> reporter: conventional wisdom and decades of polling say women vote democrat. >> the republican party is not good for women. >> there's a very obvious palpable anxiety about a loss of control and loss of limit. >> reporter: and then there's dr. ben carson. >> that's the man. >> i can't believe i met him and touched him. i'm not going to wash my hand for 100 years. >> reporter: in the last six elections women voted for democrats over republicans by

double digit margins. but carson bucks the trend in polls. he's got the highest favorability rating of any candidate, democrat or republican, running for president. >> women have been such a big part of my life. you know. i had the most incredible mother that anybody could imagine. i got the most incredible wife anybody could imagine. i had the most incredible senior p.a. that anybody could imagine. office assistants. i couldn't do it without women. >> reporter: fans say it's that soft-spoken, thoughtful demeanor that has earned their trust. >> i think he's the real deal. maybe our antenna can feel that out if he's not just a politician >> he's tender. he's soft-spoken. he's gentle. i think that appeals. that appeals to women. >> reporter: these women are a key part of his base. >> our two strongest demographics are what i call the broader christian base, not just the evangelical base, also females. women, usually 40 and up are very, very strong. >> reporter: his demeanor strikes quite a contrast with

after the first presidential debate. and of course, a strong showing yesterday on capitol hill. >> yeah, but can republicans really spin it as more questions than answers? because even trey gowdy who chairs the committee heading up the hearing admits nothing new was revealed, despite hours of questioning. so will that lead voters to view this as a partisan witch-hunt? >> you know what else is really interesting is that representative gowdy said that he would not be calling secretary clinton again to testify for a second time. so i think that that in and of itself sends a clear message that there will not be another hearing for secretary clinton to testify on. capitol hill. >> all right. move on to ben carson, because as we just saw, he's surpassing donald trump in this new quinnipiac poll in iowa with female voters behind him. could this really be a pivotal moment in the gop race? >> i think that it's time for voters to take a look at dr. ben carson. and i think that there is no question that this is a candidate who has a lot of appeal to the republican base. he is also someone who has a

compelling personal narrative. now, on policy issues, although he is appealing to the grassroots of the republican party, i have to be honest, there was a white paper published yesterday by the conservative club for growth that really attacked him for some of his policy positions, ranging from the economy to health care. so it's going to be interesting now that he has more time in the spotlight, whether or not he's going to be able to sustain his lead. >> right. >> but you are absolutely right, he is dominating the field in iowa. crucially among women. and it will be interesting to see whether or not he's able to hold onto those numbers. >> i mean, that was really my next question because 100 days still to go until this iowa caucus. can he hold on? there's a lot of time between now and then. >> i know. it feels like the way we talk about it, that it will be tomorrow. but you know, we'll have to see. i think that senator marco rubio is one to watch heading into the next debate as well. >> kevin cirilli, thanks for joining us. you have a great weekend. >> you, too, thanks for having me. >> just ahead, a look back at what a big week we had in politics and then some. that's next. sold every month.
