decision and his message on hillary clinton. and tragedy in oklahoma, this morning the woman accused of crashing into a crowd of people at the oklahoma state homecoming parade makes her first court appearance. it's 5:30 on the east co, 2:30 out west and this is "way too early." ♪ good morning. it's monday, october 26th, i'm jonathan capehart. we're less than 100 days from the iowa caucuses. two polls show ben carson opening up a big lead over donald trump. the billionaire took the gloves off against the neurosurgeon. >> we have a breaking story. donald trump has fallen to second place behind ben carson.
2:31 am
[ booing ] we informed ben, but he was sleeping. ben carson is super low energy, right? it's super. he's super low. super low energy. >> but trump gained the most attention for his comments in florida on saturday, where he appeared to question carson's religious denomination. carson is a member of the seventh day adventist church. >> i don't have to say it. i'm presbyterian. can you believe it? nobody believes it. i'm presbyterian. i'm presbyterian. boy, that's down the middle of the road, folks, in all fairness. i mean, seventh day adventist, i don't know about. i just don't know about. >> some conservatives claim the seventh day adventists are not christian. were you trying to send a dog whistle to them because ben carson is beating you among evangelicals in iowa?
2:32 am
>> not at all. nationwide i'm beating ben with the evangelicals but no, not at all. i just don't know about that particular religion. >> ben carson asked for an apology. will you goive to had im? >> i didn't say anything bad about it. i just don't know about it. i would certainly give an apology if i said something bad about it but i didn't. all i said was i don't know about it. >> and for his part, carson chose not to respond to trump in kind while defending his low key demeanor. >> you know, everybody has their own personality, and if he liked to do that, that's fine. that's not who i am. and i don't get into the mud pit and i'm not going to be talking about people. i will tell you in terms of energy, i'm not sure that there's anybody else running who has spent 18 or 20 hours intently operating on somebody. >> do you think that people mistaken your soft spokenness with lack of energy? >> i think so. i have plenty of energy, but you
2:33 am
know, i am soft spoken. i do have a tendency to be relaxed. i wasn't always like that. there was a time when i was you know, very volatile, but you know, i changed. >> when was that? >> as a teenager. i would go after people with rocks and bricks and baseball bats and hammers and of course, many people know the story when i was 14 and tried to stab someone. and you know, fortunately you know, my life has been changed and i'm a very different person now. >> it was a rocky weekend for the presidential campaign of jeb bush. on friday, bush's campaign revealed it is cutting its payroll by 40%, slashing its budget and downsizing its miami headquarters with some senior staffers working on a volunteer basis. one anonymous bush fund-raiser told "the washington post" "it feels very much like a death spiral and it breaks my heart. i don't know anyone who wants to reinvest now."
2:34 am
back on the trail this weekend, bush addressed the "adjustments" his campaign is making. >> the falling apart, he may not even -- blah, blah, blah. you know what they're saying out there. taes' my answer, blah, blah, blah. watch it. president cain was winning the republican primary in 2007. senator clinton was up by 25% gins an unknown guy named barack obama eight years ago. i think president giuliani was leading the field for a brief time more or less this same time, and so you look at the race, october is not when you elect people. it's february. >> and bush's trouble comes amaid new reporting on his father's frustration with the republican primary. former president george h.w. bush has been participating in the regular conference call, jeb bush holds for top supporter answer according to the "new york times" he's been baffled by
2:35 am
the dominance of donald trump in recent months with friends quoting him as saying "i'm getting old at just the right time." it appears jeb bush shares his frustration with raw comments about the state of the race at a town hall in south carolina saturday morning. >> if this election is about how we're going to fight to get nothing done, then i don't want any part of it. i don't want to be elected president to sit around and see gridlock back so dominant that people literally are in decline in their lives. that is not my motivation. i good a lot of really cool things that i could do other than sit around being miserable listening to people demonize me and me feeling compelled to demonize them. that is a joke. elect trump if you want that. >> and speaking of trump, trump pulled no punches this weekend in going after bush. >> here's a guy wants to run our country and he can't even run his own campaign. so bush has no money. he's cutting, he's meeting today
2:36 am
with mommy and daddy, and they're working on their campaign. they're working. >> i thought jeb was going to be the front-runner. obvious he wills' no longer the front-runner. i probably won't talk about him so much anymore. let's turn to the democrats and saturday night's jefferson jackson dinner featuring the three remaining presidential candidates for the party. hillary clinton held a rally that featured remarks from her husband and musical performance by katy perry that drew thousands. bernie sanders held an outdoor rally with his supporters and a march to the event and martin o'malley served as his own musical entertainment before headed inside the dinner venue. once inside sanders and clinton drew some of their sharpest contrasts in the campaign. sanders repeatedly compared his record with clinton's without ever once mentioning her name. >> and let me be clear about the current trade deal that we are debating in congress, the

husband's third term and i'm not running for barack obama's third term. i'm running for my first term and i'm running as a proud democrat. i know and you know it's not enough just to rail against the republicans or the billionaires. we actually have to win this election in order to rebuild the middle class and make a positive difference in people's lives. i've been told to stop shouting about ending gun violence. well, i haven't been shouting but sometimes when a woman speaks out, some people think it's shouting. >> vice president biden was not in attendance. in an interview last night on "60 minutes" he spoke about the motivations behind that decision, his announcement speech in the rose garden and his relationship with the
