conducted from thursday through sunday shows trump trailing ben carson by 14 points. the poll had them tied in august. senators ted cruz and marco rubio are tied for third place with rubio gaining six points. and a new statewide poll from iowa's own loras college finds carson rising and trump falling. carson is up 13 points to 31%. while trump dropped six points to 19%. marco rubio also gained six points, placing third in this poll, as well. altogether, four polls released within four days of each other, have shown trump losing steam in iowa, where the republican caucus is little more than three months away. donald trump is receiving attention this morning for a comment he made at a special new hampshire town hall on yesterday's "today" show. take a listen. >> with the exception of your family, have you ever been told no? >> oh, many times. i've been told no by him. many, many times. i mean my whole life, really,

a 45 slide power point presentation the bush campaign reportedly targeted marco rubio. now they pointed out he doesn't have a single endorsement from a fellow senator. and one slide was even titled marco is a gop obama. and a top staffer noted the two have strikingly similar profiles, that include being lawyers, university lecturers, and former state legislators, with, quote, few legislative accomplishments. but just across town, ted cruz visited a gun range with the president in tow and at a news conference beforehand, while he was cordial to the bush family, for whom he once worked, the message seems clear. >> to date our campaign has raised over $10.9 million from the state of texas. far more than any candidate in the field. and part of the strength of the campaign, the campaign altogether has raised over $26.5 million in just over six points.

and we finished the last quarter reporting the most cash on hand of any republican in the field. this state continues to respect the bush family. i certainly do. i hold the family in high regard. they have a remarkable legacy of public service. a decency, a commitment to making a difference that i very much respect. i think at the same time, texans recognize circumstances have changed. seven years of barack obama in washington, in politics there are a handful of consultants in washington who always advise to republicans, the way to win is run to the middle. run to the mushy middle, sound like democrat lite. it's an interesting theory but every single time we do it, we lose. >> let's turn now to the democrats, and escalating feuds between hillary clinton and bernie sanders over a comment sanders made at the first democratic debate that the clinton campaign is now painting as sexist. here's what bernie sanders said

during the first debate after clinton attacked him for not being tough enough on guns. >> as the senator from a rural state, what i can tell secretary clinton, all the shouting in the world is not going to do what i would hope all of us want. and that is keep guns out of the hands of people who should not have those guns. and end this horrible violence that we are seeing. >> as "the new york times" and others have pointed out, the shouting phrase is one sanders had used regularly throughout his campaign, even before clinton released her plan to address gun violence. but clinton zeroed in on the line on twitter and in consecutive speeches on friday and saturday. >> i've been told to stop, and i quote, shouting about gun violence. well, first of all, i'm not shouting. it's just when women talk some people think we're shouting. i've been told to stop shouting

about ending gun violence. well, i haven't been shouting. but sometimes when a woman speaks out, some people think it's shouting. but, i won't be silenced and i hope you won't be either. how many more people have to die before we take action? >> well, i was talking about very clearly is that all across this country, you've got people shouting at each other. >> right. >> we've got to calm it down -- >> she's suggesting that you're saying that she's shouting and that you -- when you hear a woman talking you think that they're shouting. >> no. well, what can i say. that's just not the case. >> and now sanders' chief strategist is pushing back further, telling politico, quote, if there's going to have a campaign that attacks bernie on gun safety, and implies he engages in sexism, that's unacceptable. we're going to have to talk about other things if they do that.

the days of president obama battling republicans in congress over the country's major fiscal issues may be behind us. at least for a little while. congressional leaders and the white house have reached a two-year budget agreement that includes modest increases in military and domestic spending, in exchange for long-term cuts to social security and medicare. it's paired with an extension of the federal borrowing limit through march 2017. well past next year's election. text of the 144 page bill named the bipartisan budget act of 2015 was posted just before midnight. a vote could come as early as tomorrow in the house, where paul ryan is expected to be elected speaker on thursday. this morning the meat industry is hitting back at an alarming new report that claims processed meats cause cancer. researchers from the world health organization say the same is probably true for red meat, as well. the risk, they claim, colorectal and possibly stomach cancer. nbc's anne thompson has a look at the numbers.

>> reporter: the report says such meats cause cancer. eating 50 grams a day, about two slices of bacon, increases the risk for colon cancer 18%. red meat, which it says probably causes cancer, 100 grams a day, a piece the size of a deck of cards, raises the risk 17%. the report puts processed meats in the same category as cigarettes and asbestos. but the danger is not even close. the cdc says smoking increases risk your cancer by 2,000%. the $134 billion meat industry called the 800 studies the w.h.o. report looked at unconvincing. >> scientific evidence just simply doesn't support a causal link between any type of red or processed meat and any type of cancer. >> researchers said the risk of developing cancer from processed meat is small. about the magnitude of, quote, passive smoking. but they're adamant that the risk increase with consumption is significant. this morning, police in south carolina are investigating after

a video surfaced that appears to show an officer dragging a high school student from her desk. a warning, and i'm serious, some may find the video graphic. in it you see deputy ben fields, a school resource officer at spring valley high school in columbia, south carolina, approach the student at her desk at one point you can see fields put his arm around her neck before appearing to slam the student to the ground and drag her to the front of the room. the richland county sheriff's office told the local nbc affiliate the student had been asked to leave the classroom by her teacher, and when she refused, officer fields was called in and asked to remove her. according to the sheriff the student was told she was under arrest, but refused to leave the room. and then the altercation occurred. fields has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation. the confrontation has drawn intense criticism. the city's mayor said he was outraged the district superintendent says they are

fully cooperating, adding she is deeply concerned and pending the outcome of an investigation, the officer is not to return to any school in the district. yesterday, fbi director james comey acknowledged there is little data that a so-called ferguson effect is responsible for a recent rise in violent crime. it's the notion that increased scrutiny has made officers less aggressive and more reluctant to fight crime. here's what the fbi director said friday, and the sproens from the white house yesterday. >> in today's youtube world, are officers reluctant to get out of their cars and do the work that controls violent crime? i spoke to officers privately in one big city precinct who describe being surrounded by young people with mobile phones held high, taunting them when they get out of their cars. they said to me, we feel under siege and we don't feel much like getting out of our cars. i've been told about a senior police leader in this country who urged his force to remember that our political leadership

has no tolerance for any of you being involved in the next viral video. >> the evidence that we've seen so far doesn't support the contention that law enforcement officials are somehow shirking their responsibility. and, in fact, you hear law enforcement leaders across the country indicating that that's not what's taking place. >> the fbi director spoke on the issue again yesterday, telling a group of police chiefs that the surge in criticism and anti-police protests is, quote, the one theory that to my mind, and to my common sense, is explains the rise in crime. it's a new day at ole miss. yesterday the university of mississippi removed the state's flag from its campus, after votes from students and faculty over the confederate emblem. the university is steeped in southern tradition. but has overhauled traditions in recent years, including shedding its confederate rebel mascot. interim chancellor wrote in a statement, quote, i understand the flag represents tradition and honor to some, but to others, the flag means that some

on all three major indices ahead of its key earnings report due out after the close today. cnbc's carolyn ross joins us live from london. what is wall street watching for in apple's earnings? >> well, first of all, the expectations were pretty high after a number of very strong tech reports coming out last week from the likes of amazon, microsoft, alphabet, the new google parent for example. so it's very uncertain whether apple can actually match those expectations. second of all, and this is very important, given that iphone sales count for roughly 60% of the company's sales. even the most bullish analysts out there believe that apple iphone sales will actually slow year-on-year. all right also want to talk about walmart, because it seems like walmart is getting in to the drone business, going against its rival amazon. now walmart has applied to u.s. regulators for permission to test commercial drones outside. what would they use it for? maybe for delivery. maybe for store pickup.
