president richard nixon's. he was a big man. he stood 6'6". the role he is best known for, arthur branch on the nbc series "law and order." thompson was a republican who appealed to voters as a conservative who would challenge president clinton. he left in 2003 saying he didn't have the heart for another term. he tried his hand at politics four years later when he launched a bid for the presidency. thompson's pertinent and charisma could still fire up a crowd. he delivered a passionate speech in 2008. >> we live in the freest, generous, most prosperous nation in the world, and we're thankful for that. his family said fred was the same man in the movie studio or the senate floor.

the bodies in the deadly crash in the sinai peninsula are back in russia. the majority of the passengers were russian. bill neely has more. >> reporter: it fell out of the sky and no one knows why. but there were more clues today. the debris is so scattered. the plane's tail three miles from the cockpit. russian investigators say it broke up in midair. search terms are examining human remains. the tangled wreckage for any signs of explosion, fire, mechanical fail very. tragic reminder of the 224 lives lost. the plane's two black boxes have now been recovered. soon the voices and the data from the cockpit will be analyzed. investigators still have no idea why the plane suddenly lost altitude and speed at 31,000 feet. why the pilot made no distress

welcome back to "first look". this was over the weekend in texas, trying to recover from tornados and flooding.

a fierce storm. some areas picked up 5 to 10 inches of rain over the weekend, killed five people. it spawned tornados from texas to louisiana. now the same system providing us with a flood threat in the southeast. one to three inches yesterday. new thunderstorms are firing up. it doesn't look like severe weather. but pensacola to atlanta, heavy rain, ponding on the roads. isolated to minor flooding problems. keep that in mind if you're near atlanta, down to montgomery, pensacola. raleigh, norfolk, charlotte, steady rain. one to two inches of rain. areas with thunderstorms, up to four inches. we won't see horrible flooding, but we will see some. we are now into november, but it doesn't feel like it. much above normal temperatures. everywhere in the yellow and
