our 45th president and the candidates, they are busy. jeb bush is now into his jeb can fix it tour. a big reset starting in florida. that phrase was trending on twitter worldwide, but maybe for the wrong reasons. people make jokes out of it like jeb can fix it referring to the 2000 election in florida. >> i think he's highly joet rated. i think he's an overrated person. i don't think he's going to make it. he's nowhere in the polls. >> and to more friction between trump and his fellow republican candidates. trump is throwing a curveball. he will continue to negotiate tv deals with the network instead of as part of that gop group effort. as far as the debates are concerned, president obama joked about them at a fund-raiser last night. >> it turns out they can't handle a bunch of cnbc

moderators. if you can't handle those guys, you know, then i don't think the chinese and the russians are going to be too worried about you. >> those gop candidates are all looking at brand new data from nbc news. a new poll with its brand new front-runner and in a big way. nbc's tracie potts is live from washington. tracie, which candidates are waking up to good news this morning? >> certainly ben carson even more than we've already seen. and the poll tells us the economy is still the number one issue with voters. but they're split over whether democrats or republicans should be in charge here. >> new from our nbc "wall street journal" poll, americans are frustrated. just over a quarter think we're headed in the right direction. more than half think the deck is stacked against them.

gathering by a u.s. satellite is raising some concern. >> the wreckage tells the story of a plane that broke apart in midair, scattered so far a satellite was used to find debris. each piece, a clue in this mystery. investigators worked on the two flight recorder's, extracting information but releasing none. the airline metro jet claims a technical fault couldn't have caused the crash, blaming an external impact. russian officials insist that isn't based on fact. one fact we know is that the doomed plane was involved in a previous accident. its tail hitting the ground, landing here in cairo 14 years ago. and nobody is ruling out terrorism. isis, which operates in the area, claims it downed the plane. egypt and russia discounting that. the u.s. is not. >> we don't have any direct evidence of any terrorist involvement yet. >> the bodies of nearly 200

people are back in russia now. among the dead, the sheen family, pictured leaving for egypt. and the youngest victim, 10-month-old dorina, waiting to go home, lost in a disaster still to be explained. bill kenealy, nbc news, cairo. new developments in that uber attack caught on camera. benjamin golden, with taco bell, is out of a job this morning. golden repeatedly punching an uber driver went viral yesterday. he has not responded to requests for comment on the case. >> he was charged with public intoxication. in a statement on cnbc, a taco bell spokesperson said given the behavior, it's clear he can no longer work for us. the company encouraged golden to seek help. the hotly debated xl pipeline may be put on hold. the secretary of canada send john kerry a temporary request

to withdrawal its license. the request could keep the project alive, though the state debate is not obligated to grant the suspension. as president obama pushes for sweeping criminal justice reform, he sat down for a candid, exclusive interview with nbc's lester holt. >> you take out you of the underpinnings of the justice which is deterrent when you say no jail or diversion or shoert sentences. are you afraid it could send the wrong message? >> actually, nobody is talking about no jail in all circumstances. the question is how do we go through the various levels of the criminal justice system and tailor it so that we are getting the best results, which are safe streets and a reduced incarceration that results in society spending $80 billion a year? and some of it is necessary. i've said repeatedly, if you've

got violent crippminals out the, they need to be incapacitated, they need to be taken off the streets. nobody is more invested than i am in continuing the trend towards reduced crime. >> and for the first time, president obama spoke about his decision to put boots on the ground in syria. >> we haven't heard from you since last friday when the decision was announced to put a small number of u.s. special operations forces on the ground in northern syria. many will look and see you've broken your promise about boots on the ground. have you? >> keep in mind that we have run special ops already. and, really, this is just an extension of what we are continuing to do. we are not putting u.s. troops on the front lines fighting fire fights with isil. but i've been consistent throughout, that we are not going to be fighting like we did in iraq with a battalions and
