2:30 am
with tremendous energy. thank you very much, folks, i will take the job. the best of donald trump's news conference yesterday debuting his new book and ramping up the attacks against his rivals, especially marco rubio, plus brand-new polling on which gop candidate would give hillary clinton the best run for her money, but is it the person republican voters want to put in the white house? and there was big money and star power behind the campaign to legalize marijuana in colorado and this morning the results are in. it's 5:30 on the east coast, 2:30 out west and this is "way too early". good morning, everybody, it's wednesday, november 4th, i'm amy holmes. we begin with presidential
2:31 am
politics and ben carson still technically off the campaign trail today, but you would never know it by the long lines of people waiting to see him at book signings in florida. and in a new nbc news "wall street journal" poll carson is the only republican who ties in a head to head match up with hillary clinton, both locked at 47%. donald trump trails clinton by 8 points up slightly from a 10 point deficit in september. marco rubio and jeb bush also trail in general election matchups with clinton though rubio is just inside the margin of error, mean while donald trump made his case for why he will defeat carson. >> i think that ben just doesn't have the experience. i'm going to make the greatest deals you have ever seen on trade, we're going to run the military properly, i'm going to take care of the vets. ben can't do no he is things, ben can't deal on trade -- >> why not? >> it's not his thing, george. you're born with it. it's not his thing, he hasn't
2:32 am
got the temp president remt for it, it's not the right thing for him. >> what would you expect? he's got a lot of experience, more than i do. he's not going to say that. experience comes from a variety of different things. it doesn't only have to be in one segment or the other. so, you know, i have had a lot of experience, for instance, doing things that have never been done before, particularly in the medical field. >> another new poll shows donald trump holding a massive lead over marco rubio and jeb bush in their home state. the florida decides poll shows trump ahead with 37% of the vote winning with nearly every demographic, including republican hispanics. ben carson is at 17% and rubio at 16%, about you wish is way back at 7%. this comes as marco rubio's personal finances are under new scrutiny. the tampa bay times reporting that rubio still hasn't turned over some records related to a
2:33 am
state party credit card that he used while speaker of the florida state house. earlier statements show that he charged personal expenses, like repairs to the family minivan and a $10,000 family reunion to the card. rubio has defended the charges and has said that he has reimbursed the party for all of them. his campaign tells the times that more records will be released soon, possibly within the month. meanwhile, donald trump is already on the attack. >> and i'm way up in florida over everybody, but marco is a sitting senator and he doesn't show up for the people of florida. look at marco's stance on illegal immigration, it's really trouble for him. i don't see how he can win. all you have to do is look at his credit card. i mean, he is a disaster with his credit cards. he certainly lives above his means, there's no question about that. >> and marco rubio has on capitol hill yesterday to vote in the senate on new epa rules. he also received the endorsement of a colleague freshman senator
2:34 am
steve danes of montana while majority leader mip mcconnell who has endorsed rand paul defended rubio for his voting record in year. >> you know, i can't recall democratic senators complaining about senator obama missing votes. i can't even recall them complaining about senator mccain missing votes. senators running for president missing votes is not terribly unusual. meanwhile, jeb bush took his jeb can fix it tour to the early voting states of new hampshire and south carolina yesterday, but in between events the former governor responded to donald trump's call for him to drop out of the race. here is what donald trump said yesterday and bush's reply. >> look, jeb is a nice guy, he is a stiff, he is a nice guy. he doesn't have a chance. he ought to do what walker did. >> you think he should drop out. >> absolutely. he has no chance. he has money but the money is not going to do it and he has been branded as a low energy person.
2:35 am
>> by who? >> i don't i don't know. i can't imagine. >> he has run for president twice and quit and i've run for governor in the biggest swing state and won twice. i know how to win. i've done t i actually know how to govern which is going to be an attribute when we get closer to the election. >> so for the record for donald trump you're not quitting? >> no. i mean, what -- do we have to talk about donald trump? no, i'm not quitting. he is entertaining, he's fun, he says really funny things in the breaks in the debate, but i'm running for president of the united states and it's a serious endeavor. >> bush continuing to take thinly veiled swipes at trump and rubio. out on the trail yesterday making references to the big personality on the stage as well as candidates who want to go from one side of tfof the capit the next. >> america does it better when
2:36 am
it's a dynamic response to the opportunities and challenges we face. that's how we do it. that's how we roll as a country. and we are not rolling that way right now. that's how america has always been, moving forward. always believing in the dynamic response, always embracing the unforeseen because we are americans, dammit. >> i want to win. i want to win. i want to restore our greatness as a nation. i don't want to talk about it anymore. >> but for us who? who is going to lead the world? who is going to take care of the persecuted? who is going to take care of oppressed? who is going to deal with islamic terrorism. >> good energy tonight. >> i actually had pretty good energy every night. the nbc news "wall street journal" poll also finds senator bernie sanders performing well against republican rivals, he leads donald trump by 9 points, 50 to 41 and marco rubio by 5
2:37 am
points, but 1 point better against trump and two points better against rubio than hillary clinton nationally. another poll finds the vermont senator trailing in neighboring new hampshire. the monmouth university poll finds clinton back in the lead 48% to 45%. this as donald trump said yesterday that sanders is already finished. >> when the e-mail problem came up bernie sanders lost his whole campaign. what he did was so stupid from his standpoint. in order to get a one minute sound bite of some applause he gave up the e-mails. that was the end of his campaign. >> but sanders did not take trump's attack lying down tweeting, quote, if i am finished i don't know what it says about trump's situation when i'm 9 points ahead of him in the nbc poll. hillary clinton is renewing his pledge to turn gun control into a campaign issue in hopes of starting a movement to counter the nra.
2:38 am
the presidential candidate said she would push to close loopholes in background checks and vowed to make this a voting issue just like the other side do does. they just released a new television ad to run in iowa and new hampshire. >> epidemic of gun violence knows no boundaries. between 88 and 92 people a day are killed by guns. we're better than this. how many people have to die before we actually act? before we come together as a nation. >> on monday clinton traveled to chicago and met privately with the mothers of several high profile shooting victims where she praised them for turning their grief into a national call to action. clinton tweeting, quote, while in chicago discussing the way forward another child dice from gun violence just miles away. devastating. she is referring to nine-year-old taishon lee who
2:39 am
was shot multiple times and left to die in an alley. that same day kay listen prior was also gunned down on chicago's south side. and just yesterday at least 11 victims are shot across the city claiming the lives of two people and all of this coming as spike lee releases the trailer for his controversial new movie about chicago gang violence called shy rack. >> >> this is an emergency. this is an emergency. >> homicides in chicago, illinois, have surpassed the death toll of american special forces in iraq. >> welcome to chiraq. land of pain, misery and strife. peace.
2:40 am
>> there have been at least 2500 victims of gun violence in chicago so far this year and spike lee says that he believes that great art can impact the world and that it would be irresponsible for him as a filmmaker to ignore what he calls, quote, self-inflicted genocide. this morning officials are expected to announce that investigators believe the shooting of the illinois police officer that sparked a massive manhunt in september was, in fact, a suicide. this according to the chicago nbc affiliate citing a law enforcement source. moments before his death lieutenant charles gliniewicz radioed dispatch that he was in pursuit of two white males and a black male on foot, inciting a manhunt that closed down schools and disrupted train service in the area. vigils and a funeral service attended by thousands were held for the veteran lieutenant. an officer over 30 years and father of four. now let's turn to some business news where shares of takata plunged as much as 20%
2:41 am
yesterday after the japanese air bag maker agreed to pay a fine of at least $70 million in a deal with u.s. regulators over exploding air bags. cnbc's geoff cutmore joins us live from london with more. >> reporter: this takata story has been running for some time now, no surprise to see the value of this business deflate by quite so much on the stock market, given this $70 million fine that they have received from the safety agency and as a result of honda deciding they will no longer use takata to supply their air bags. i think that is probably the greatest blow alongside that significant fine. so not a good story for takata and of course a number of deaths linked to that company now and problems with those air bags. i just want to move you along here. we have another fascinating business story here involving that major brewing deal, sab

miller seeking an extension of the deadline for the inbev offer to be made here. we know that this is in the realm of about $100 billion but apparently the lawyers need a little more time to get the paperwork done on the deal. that's why they've sought the extension. the financing is in place they say. they also have due diligence done here. we can still expect this deal to happen, but they just need a bit more time to dot the i's and cross the t's. a couple fascinating fascinating social networking stories. apparently twitter users are not happy about the fact that the star favorite icon is to be replaced with the heart like. that kicking off a little bit of controversy on the twitter sphere. fascinating that google are trying out technology now they say is like artificial intelligence and may ultimately lead to the service answering your e-mails for you.

profile race there were still signs of life for the tea party. republican matt bevin stunned democrat jack conway to become governor elect in kentucky. bevin braved a rocky road to get there in 2014 he got trounced by mitch mcconnell in an ugly senate primary. in this year's race the republican governor's association pulled out their money only to rush back in at the last moment. bevin proved the polls wrong and promised to unite the state while flanked by his wife and nine children, four of whom are adopted by ethiopia. >> i know many of you are weary of turning on your tv and seeing my evil twin and so i just want you to know i have asked him to move out of kentucky. i have asked that guy -- i don't know who he is exactly, but he has been up to no good apparently and he has been given me a bad name.
2:48 am
>> the state's gold standard poll had conway up five points with just days to go. national democrats explanation, quote, unfortunately john conway ran into the unexpected headwinds of trump mania, losing to an outsider candidate in the year of the outsider. one other note the state elected their first ever african-american to statewide office, janine hampton. and in ohio voters overwhelmingly rejected a measure that would have legalized marijuana for medical and recreational use. the measure known as issue 3 came under fire even from long time legalization supporters who opposed the amendment because it would have given a handful of wealthy investors who spent about $25 million to bank roll the initiative exclusive rights to grow marijuana commercially for at least four years. the buckeye state would have become the fifth to legalize marijuana for recreational use. seven other states are expected to vote on the issue next year.

are the other republicans afraid to debate? well some of them should be. my jeb impression, nah, i don't want to do that. i don't like to show a person sleeping at a podium. ben carson does not have that energy. i think marco is highly overrated. he certainly lives above his means, there's no question about that. look at his credit card.
