but now it's official. the university of virginia fraternity at the center of a now defunct rolling stone article is suing the magazine for big bucks. it's 5:30 on the east coast, 2:30 out west and this is "way too early." good morning. it's tuesday, november 10th. i'm jonathan capehart in washington. this morning, students at the university of missouri are learning firsthand the power of protests. yesterday, the university system president and chancellor stepped down. tension has been bubbling up for some time over the administration's handling of racial issues on campus. but when the entire division one football team led by black players threatened to walk out the calculus changed. nbc's jacob rascon has more on how it came to this point.

>> reporter: after two months of anger and unrest on campus, an announcement as sudden as it was stunning. >> i'm resigning as president of the university of missouri system. >> reporter: and hours later, the chancellor announced he will be stepping down at the end of the year. students say this semester has been plagued with incidents of racial harassment. >> i think there's been a lot of racial tensions, and i'm glad that something has finally been done. >> reporter: in september, the black student body president said a group of white students had shouted the "n" word at him. >> i'm walking down the street and someone screams the "n" word out at me again. >> reporter: other students reported a swastika left on a dorm wall. and the university's response was lacking. even infuriating, they said. they could hardly believe the news. enough to bring some to tears.

enough for protest leader jonathan butler to end his hunger strike after eight days. appearing weak, and unsteady. >> our humanity is worth fighting for. that's what we're saying in this moment that we're worth fighting for. >> reporter: they celebrate not because it is the end of a journey, they hope it is a new beginning. the anger is fuelled by racial tension across the country. including last year's riots in ferguson, less than two hours away. the tipping point came over the weekend, a photograph worth a thousand protests. the football team backed by their coaching staff refusing to play until the president was out. now back in the game. >> please, please, use this resignation to heal. not to hate. and let's move forward together for a brighter tomorrow. >> the university's governing board announced a new series of

>> you need to get out. >> i actually don't. >> all right. hey, who wants to help me get this reporter out of here? over here! >> "the new york times" identifies that woman at the end apparently grabbing the camera as melissa click, assistant professor of mass media at the university. she reportedly didn't respond to requests for comment last night. president obama's immigration plan has hit another roadblock. a federal appeals court has ruled 2-1 against the president's executive order. under the plan millions of undocumented immigrants would be shielded from deportation. now, at this point the administration may be able to appeal the decision to the supreme court for consideration. meanwhile, senator bernie sanders rolled out his own immigration proposal yesterday, expanding on the president's executive action. >> mothers are worried about their children, children are worried about their fathers. that is not what america should be about. so what we have got to do is to fight as hard as we can to end

that fear that exists by taking people out of the shadows immediately. as quickly as possible, and providing legal status. >> the top republican candidates will square off in milwaukee for a fourth time tonight. with only eight on the main stage, four in the undercard, and three on the sidelines completely, we should expect to hear more from the candidates. while new national polling shows a close race. ben carson and donald trump running neck and neck, 24 to 23%. marco rubio is at 12%. while ted cruz and jeb bush tie for fourth place at 8%. and in the pivotal south carolina primary, the monmouth university poll shows ben carson with a slight advantage over trump. 28% to 27%. where carson is now leading trump among evangelicals 33% to 18%. 24-point swing since august. donald trump stormed an

arena in springfield, illinois, last night, drawing a crowd of more than 10,000. that breaks a record set by elton john at the prairie capital convention center. that's just down the street from abraham lincoln's family home. trump's speech focused on his opponents, beginning with an impression of bernie sanders after protesters interrupted by chanting, quote, feel the burn. >> first of all, a couple of young women took over the microphone from bernie a month ago, right? they took it over. he was like this, oh. he is not stopping isis, i will tell you. but i don't mention him anymore because he's just not working out. he's not doing too well. and he's been defined. now i have to define a couple of other people. with what's going on with this election, i've never seen anything like it. people are getting away with murder. i never saw anything like this.

you could say anything about anybody, and their poll numbers go up. if you try and hit your mother over the head with a hammer, your poll numbers go up. you stab somebody, and the newspapers say you didn't do it. and you said, yes i did. i did it! no, you didn't. yes, i did! i stabbed him and it hit the belt. and they said, you didn't do it. if they said i didn't do it, i'd be so happy. this is the only election in history where you're better off if you stab somebody. what are we coming to? >> "the new york times" reports that supporters of ben carson are preparing to counter recent attacks on his personal narrative by showcasing his career as a doctor. carson's super pac has reportedly hired a media team that will be tasked with doing just that. in an e-mail to supporters the chairman of the committee writes, quote, the liberal media

and powerful political establishment are doing everything they can to undermine dr. carson's integrity, but we're committed to staying positive and telling america about the ways dr. carson's -- dr. carson has saved lives. it comes at least as at least one of carson's personal anecdotes to get media scrutiny in recent days. about a prank psychology test he was forced to take while at yale is now getting some backup on friday "the wall street journal" reported that it could find no evidence to support carson's claim that he was subjected to taking a hoax test in that psychology class but a former staffer at a satirical campus newspaper who claims to have helped write the fake test has since told buzz feed that he is, quote, 99% certain the way carson remembers it is correct. meanwhile, the white house is now weighing in on carson's recent claim that he has received more media scrutiny than barack obama did during his first bid for the presidency. >> do you agree with that, that ben carson is under more

scrutiny than barack obama? >> i don't agree with that statement. i think many of you who have covered, you know, both the 2008 campaign and this campaign, i think, can obviously draw your own conclusions. this process is good for our democracy. it's not easy to run for president. it shouldn't be. and that people when they make public comments are going to have their claims scrutinized. even if their claims got their own biography. and that's -- that's part of the process. >> allies of jeb bush are considering unleashing an onslaught of attacks against marco rubio in the coming weeks. this according to a report in this morning's "new york times." the paper reports that mike murphy, the chief strategist at bush's right to rise super pac has recently expressed his willingness to spend as much as $20 million to damage rubio's representation and stunt his rise in the poll. murphy himself tells the "times," quote, part of running for president is you have to put

your big boy pants on and get vetted on the issues so we know we don't have a dud candidate running against hillary clinton. but as the paper points out, bush has oftentimes spoke glowingly about his former protege, since their time together in the florida state house, and rubio campaign has already begun collecting footage of him doing so to counter the attack. for example, here's bush in 2012 explaining why rubio would make the best running mate for mitt romney. >> he has enough preparation to be one heartbeat away from the president? >> i believe so. look, he has more experience than barack obama had when he ran. and more practical experience. and certainly got the intellectual acumen and the fortitude to be a good president. and i have a special place in my heart for him. it's hard to describe the pride i, you know, feel for his incredible success. >> meanwhile, shortly after "the new york times" article outlining the bush team's new attack plan was posted online, the rubio campaign shot out a

fund-raising e-mail informing supporters about the piece and inviting them to help fight back. president obama and israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu had four thirst face-to-face meeting in more than a year yesterday. for about two hours both men discussed their shared goals of fighting terrorism, increasing security in israel, and the crisis in syria. when discussion turned to the nuclear deal with iran both leaders found a common interest. >> we had a disagreement, president obama and myself, on the nuclear issue. that a deal was signed. right now, we are in agreement that we want to keep iran's feet to the fire. we want to make sure they don't violate the deal. >> the university of virginia fraternity that was the focus of that now discredited article in the "rolling stone" about a reported rape case of gang rape has filed a $25 million lawsuit

against the magazine and the article's writer. phi kappa psi alleges the article made it, quote, the object of an avalanche of condemnation worldwide shortly after publication last november the phi psi house was vandalized and the words uva center for rape studies were scrawled across its walls. "rolling stone" asked for a review and the report was unambiguously titled a failure that was avoidable. afterwards the magazine retracted the story and issued a public apology. "rolling stone" declined to comment on the lawsuit. now let's turn to business and as wall street struggles to come to grips with the possibility of an interest rate hike next month. cnbc's jeff cutmore joins us live from london. jeff, the markets are not liking this talk from the fed at all, is it? >> no, not at all. and that's why the s&p had its weakest session in six weeks. and you know, the future that's suggesting that we will have a

were, in a sense, sabotaged. during the 2014 sochi olympics russia's secret service reportedly posed as technicians at a lab outside of moscow where positive drug tests were destroyed or covered up. the anti-doping administration recommends the russian federation be suspended until it cleans house and that could mean missing out on the olympic games in rio. >> it should be, could be a watershed moment where people wake up and realize, look, when you have state-sponsored doping like this report alleges, that calls to mind the east germans of the 1970s, and we've all got to move forward from this. >> reporter: the russian sports minister denies the government orchestrated doping, and the cover-up. but there is a dark cloud over russia's victories. >> for now, the decision to suspend russia would be up to the iaaf, track and field's world governing body, which itself was implicated in the report for what the authors called its laissez-faire policy in pursuing doping suspicions.

a quick look at monday night football. chargers hosting the bears to san diego it was another close finish for chicago last night defeating the chargers 22-19. missing injured running back matt forte the bears reached a push from jeremy lankford who combined for 142 yards and a touchdown in the game. jay cutler threw for 345 yards and two touchdowns, including a one-handed grab by tight end zack miller that capped a ten-play game-winning drive in the fourth quarter. one-handed. you see that, bill? >> i did. that was impressive. >> i know. all right, bill, time for weather. what's going on? >> a lot of active weather over the next two days, jonathan. unfortunately probably some damaging weather, too. let's start with the storm system that went onshore yesterday in california producing more snow. this was the good part of the forecast. we des atee snow in the sierra nevada and we continue to get some of that

snow yesterday up to a foot in some of the higher elevations. the storm there, some of the pictures of it now, that has cleared out. so if anyone traveling throughout that region of the country today, no problems there. this morning, heavy rain now moving up into areas of delaware, southern portions of new jersey, philadelphia, some light rain for you. that's about to move up into new york city. so grab that umbrella and head out this morning. pittsburgh, cleveland, williams port, erie, all areas that need the umbrella as you head out the door. now as we move back here this is the amount of rainfall we're expecting today. about one to two inches across pennsylvania. only about a quarter to a half an inch from boston to philly to new york city, d.c. we could get some minor airport delays. i don't think we're going to have a lot of problems there. today is the calm before the storm, chicago, st. louis, kansas city, tulsa area, little rock, memphis included. areas around paducah, kentucky, because tomorrow we're going to have severe weather setup. the storm that brought that snow to california pushing into the middle of the country, warm, moist air from the gulf comes out ahead of it, severe weather outbreak possible and on the backside, this is now wintertime, so we're drawing the cold air in.
