yet and we just scratched the surface. wait until you hear the tirade he unleashed on his closest opponent, ben carson. and the u.s. secret service hit with another scandal. a 37-year-old officer assigned to the white house accused of sexting with a 14-year-old girl. it's 5:30 on the east coast, 2:30 out west, this is "way too early." good morning. it's friday, november the 13th, i'm louis burgdorf. we begin with breaking news overnight. a u.s. military strike targeting the notorious isis militant known as jihadi john, a senior u.s. counterterrorism official confirmed the strike but tells nbc news that there is, quote, no definitive proof yet that he was killed. joining us from london, nbc news
2:31 am
foreign correspondent keir si n simmo simmons. keir, exactly when and where did this all happen? >> well, louis, the drone strike was over in the city of raqqah. that is isis de facto capital in syria. and there are reports via twitter from groups inside raqqah saying that the strike hit a vehicle near the clock tower. these twitter reports say. and according to reporting, the man known as jihadi john was inside that vehicle. clearly, intelligence crossed the west from the u.s. to the uk would have been trying to track where he was and would have been looking for an opportunity like this. as you mentioned, right now, we don't know for sure whether he has, indeed, been killed. we are hearing that there may be a statement by the british prime minister pretty soon, and that may clarify some of this. but already we're getting reaction from some of the families whose loved ones were killed in those sickening videos
2:32 am
that you see. jihadi john, his real name by the way, mohammed emwazi, he is a british man from the streets of london, who went to syria and joined isis. the family of steven sokolof, the american journalist who was killed, said i haven't really hear the news. if they got him, great. it doesn't bring my son back. who knows if he's gone but i don't think there will ever be closure. that's a quote from shirley sotloff, the mother of steven sotloff. . reaction, too, from the family of james foley. this reaction given to abc news. it says, this huge effort to go after this deranged man filled with hate when they can't make half that effort to save the hostages while these young americans were still alive. that from diane foley, the mother of james foley. so reaction already, although i say again, we don't know for certain whether jihadi john has, indeed, been killed. >> seems like the families are
2:33 am
seeing that it's too little, too late. nbc keir simmons, thanks so much. we're also following breaking news in the effort to retake the isis-controlled town of sinjar. nbc news has confirmed that kurdish forces have now entered the northern iraqi town, and are clearing out the remaining isis militants. the terror group overran sinjar last year. the operation to retake it began yesterday with the help of some 20 u.s. airstrikes. peshmerga forces have also reportedly recaptured a main highway that isis uses to transport supplies between iraq and syria. meanwhile, it's a national day of mourning in lebanon following yesterday's twin bombings near the capital city of beirut. at least 43 people were killed and more than 200 injured when twin explosions went off in a shopping area. isis quickly claimed responsibility for the attack. according to the global security firm flashpoint intelligence, isis militants say a motorcycle equipped with explosives was detonated first, followed by a suicide bomber wearing a vest of
2:34 am
explosives. officials say this appears ton the first suicide bombing by isis in lebanon. let's turn now to some domestic politics, even by donald trump's standards last night was a theatric cal one, renewing his attacks on ben carson while campaigning in iowa. once more he targeted a signature part of the neurosurgeon's biography, his claims of a violent youth. but last night trump made a striking comparison. >> now, carson's an enigma to me. i didn't say it! carson's an enigma. he wrote a book. and he's doing great in iowa. he's second in the polls. with all these professional politicians, i'm first, carson's second. and i don't understand it. i really don't understand it. because he wrote a book, and in the book he said terrible things about himself. he said that he's pathological,
2:35 am
and that he's got basically pathological disease. i don't want a person that's got pathological disease. i don't want him. now, i'm not saying he's got it. he said it. this isn't something that i'm saying oh, he's a pathological liar, he's got path -- i'm not saying it. he said he's got pathological disease. he actually said pathological temper and then he defined it as disease. so he said he has pathological disease. if you're a child molester, a sick puppy, you're a child molester, there's no cure for that. there's only one cure, we don't want to talk about that cure. that's the ultimate cure. well there's two, there's death and the other thing. but if you're a child molester, there's no cure. they can't stop you. pathological, there's no cure. now, he said he was pathological. okay. >> trump also went after carson's story about hitting a
2:36 am
friend in the face with a padlock, and claim that he tried to stab someone. >> here's the beauty of all. he took a knife, and he went after a friend, and he lunged, he lunged that knife into the stomach of his friend. but lo and behold, it hit the belt! it hit the belt. and the knife broke. give me a break. let me tell you i'm pretty good at this stuff. so, i have a belt. the belt moves this way. it moves this way. it moves that way. but he took the knife, he went like this, and he plunged it into the belt! and amazingly the belt stayed totally flat and the knife broke. how stupid are the people of iowa? how stupid are the people of the country? to believe this crap.
2:37 am
>> carly fiorina stood up for carson last night writing on facebook, donald, sorry i've got to interrupt you again. you would know something about pathological. how was that meeting with putin? or wharton? or your self-funded campaign? anyone can turn a multimillion dollar inheritance into more money, but all the money in the world won't make you as smart as ben carson. now the battle over immigration is front and center once again in the republican primary with ben carson staking a more moderate position on the undocumented. >> i propose that we give them a six-month period in which to register. if they don't register within that six month period they're criminals. and are treated as such. but if they're -- if they register in that six-month period, and they have a pristine record, and they wish to be guest workers in this country, they would have to pay a back tax penalty and they have to continue to pay taxes going forward.
2:38 am
but they would no longer have to live in the shadows. >> donald trump reacted on twitter yesterday, saying, quote, wow, ben carson, who is very weak on illegal immigration, just said he liked amnesty and a pathway to citizenship. immigration has also the second tier republican candidates duking it out. senator ted cruz is attacking marco rubio for working in bipartisan gang of eight on immigration reform back in 2013. >> republicans nominate for president a candidate who supports amnesty. we will have given up one of the major distijzs with hillary clinton and we will lose the general election. that is a path to losing. >> my reaction in all of politics is talk is cheap. that you know where someone is based on their actions. you know, as the scripture says, you shall know them by their fruits. the gang of eight, they fought tooth and nail to try to jam
2:39 am
this amnesty down the american people's throat. >> rubio said yesterday that cruz was rewriting history while his campaign circulated a clip of the senator advocating to give legal status to the undocumented back in 2013. >> ted is a supporter of legalizing people that are in this country illegally. in fact, when the senate bill was proposed, he proposed legalizing people that were here illegally. he proposed giving them work permits. if you look at it, i don't think our positions are dramatically different. >> i don't want immigration reform to fail. i want immigration reform to pass. and so i would urge people of good faith on both sides of the aisle, if the objective is to pass commonsense immigration reform, that secures the borders, that improves legal immigration, and that allows those who are here illegally to come in out of the shadows, then we should look for areas of bipartisan agreement and compromise to come together. >> cruz now says that he supported the amendment to
2:40 am
expose democrats' unwillingness to compromise. let's move to the left, and hillary clinton. she's revived a personal story out on the campaign trail about how she was rejected by a marine recruiter back in the 1970s. it's a story clinton reportedly told for the first time about a year and a half after becoming first lady, and it popped up again this week in new hampshire. >> he looks at me and he goes, how old are you? i said well i'm 26, i'll be 27. and he goes, well, that's kind of old for us. and then he -- and then he says to me, and this was -- he said to me, maybe the dogs will take you. meaning the army. >> republicans pounced after her retelling of the story, suggesting it's an embellishment. back in june of 1994 "the new york times'" maureen dowd who was a reporter at the time expressed skepticism writing quote, even given the fact that the nation has become accustomed to miss clinton's intriguing
2:41 am
shape-shifting the latest one is still jarring, and it did not seem to fit with the first lady's own persona. after all, hillary rodham was an up and coming legal star, involved with an up and coming political star. meanwhile, john mccain tweeted, quote, hillary in the marine cor corps? well, she did come under sniper fire in bosnia, right? "the washington post" fact checker has awarded clinton's account two pinocchios meaning significant omissions and/or exaggerations. but the clinton campaign is pushing back releasing a statement that reads in part, quote, her interest was sincere and it is insulting but not surprising that republicans would attack her for this, too. now, the university of missouri has named an interim president to lead its school system after the resignation of its former chief amid racial tension. the governing board appointed mike middleton, a mizzou grad who was a professor and administrator with the university system for more than three decades. yesterday he addressed the controversy on campus, and the change in leadership.
2:42 am
>> i suspect that my color will be met with much criticism from parts of our community. i also suspect that my color was a factor in the judgment that i was the person at this time to take this position. color in this country is an issue that is considered, that affects many, many decisions that are made. positively and negatively. >> mean time, one of the men charged with making terror threats on campus, 19-year-old hunter park, has been denied bond. prosecutors have also charged a third missouri man, also accused of posting an online message, threatening to attack the school. now, the republican presidential candidates are also weighing in, as protests continue on college
2:43 am
campuses. donald trump didn't mince words calling protests at the university of missouri disgusting, while ben carson had this to say about protests like the ones at his alma mater, yale. >> we're being a little bit too tolerant, i guess you might say, accepting infantile behavior. i don't care which side it comes from. you know, to say that i have the right to violate your civil rights, because you're offending me, is un-american. it is unconstitutional. and the officials at these places must recognize that and have the moral courage to stand up to it. because if they don't, it will grow, it will exacerbate the situation, and we will move much further toward anarchy than anybody can imagine. and much more quickly. >> now to the latest black eye for the secret service.

an officer assigned to the white house has been suspended following a bust for sexting minors. 37-year-old lee robert moore has been charged with sending explicit photos of himself to someone he thought was a 14-year-old girl. according to delaware state police, moore chatted with an undercover officer, posing as an underage girl on the social media app kick. prosecutors say moore admitted to sending some of the messages, while on the job at the white house. now president obama bestowed the nation's highest military honor on an army captain who risked his life to stop a suicide bomber in afghanistan three years ago. 32-year-old retired army captain florent groberg said his instincts kicked in when he saw a bunch of motorcycles whipping around a corner. he and another sergeant tackled one of the men when captain groberg noticed that the man was wearing a vest. however his quick actions are thought to have saved more than a dozen lives. most of his patrol. now groberg is just the tenth living service member to be
