according to turkish armed forces. now russia's defense ministry says, quote, we are looking into the circumstances of the crash of the russian jet, the ministry of defense would like to stress that the plane was over the syrian territory throughout the flight. russia says the plane was downed by artillery fire, but turkey claims that its f-16s fired on the russian plane, after it ignored several warnings. now, video that we have been watching for the last several minutes, dramatic footage from turkish tv, shows a warplane going down in flames in a wooded area, with a long plume of smoke trailing behind it. the video shows a pilot parachuting down, so far, though, no updates on the status of anyone who was in the warplane. russia is an ally of syria's assad, and has been helping with the battle against isis. this all comes as president obama prepares today to host french president francois hollande at the white house where they're expected to discuss efforts to defeat isis. and of, course, a major part of

that will be the discussion over russia's role in this fight. this is all part of a diplomatic blitz by the french president who's trying to bolster international support as his country steps up air strikes following the terror attacks in paris. obama and aides have pledged an intensification of their existing strategy. hollande met with british prime minister david come ran yesterday and later this week will meet with leaders in germany, italy, and very important russian president vladimir putin. now mean time in a paris suburb, a discarded explosive belt, similar to those used by the terrorists, was found in the trash. investigators are reportedly analyzing it to see if it may have been used in earlier attacks. this all comes as authorities continue an international manhunt for suspects from the paris attacks, which happened a week and a half ago. police continue to make arrests, but so far, have not found fugitive salah abdeslam who allegedly fled to brussels after the attacks, fearing an attack a

security alert has been extended for a week. brussels remains in virtual lockdown with troops patrolling the streets. but the metro transit system there and schools could reopen on wednesday. belgium has been at the heart of the investigation since the attacks in paris which killed 130 people. shannon? >> all right, joe, thank you for that developing information. now i want to turn back to that breaking news from the turkish/syria border. we want to bring in retired army colonel jack jacobs, medal of honor recipient and msnbc military analyst. good morning to you, colonel. >> good morning, shannon. >> tell me if you can what the significance of this is at this point? >> well, you know, we've been talking for a long time. ever since the russians decided to enter the fray in syria to support assad that because we and our allies were also operating in the region, and we were -- we were supporting those who were trying to overturn assad, exactly the opposite side of the people the russians are supporting, that there was a huge potential for a big mistake.

you had people on opposite sides, dropping bombs, and strafing areas, and they're operating in the same airspace. they're on opposite sides of e the -- of the war. they're not talking to one another. and there's always the possibility that russians would drop bombs on americans. we do have americans on the ground. isn't that a fact, special forces and special operations forces. the russians have people on the ground. as well. and there was the possibility for a big mistake. well, here's a good example of what possibly can happen, not as bad as people may have feared, but it demonstrates what happens when you do not have any established protocols, any established rules of engagement between parties from opposite countries supporting opposite sides in the same airspace. the turks say that the russian su-24, i believe it was an su-24, strayed across the border

between turkey and syria. and refused to return to syria even after being warned to do so. and that it subsequently shot the aircraft down. using f-16s, turkish f-16s. the russians deny that initially, which is what one would expect in any case from anybody. and then subsequently -- denied the fact that the russian plane was in turkish airspace. and subsequently said that the plane was shot down by groundfire from turkey, which the turks deny. >> why is that -- why is that discrepancy important? >> it is not important, actually. but i think the russians were grasping at straws to demonstrate that they, in fact, knew what the facts of the case were, and that what the turks were reporting was inaccurate. it's irrelevant whether it was ground fire or air-to-air fire.

the greater likelihood, of course, is that it's air-to-air fire. the turks have f-16s on patrol all along that border. and one of the reasons is, that the turks protect ethnic turkamen who live on both sides of the border. both in syria and in turkey. and the turks were contending, are contending, that the russians repeatedly bomb the turkamen encampments, who are not -- not part of the revolution against assad, whom the russians are supporting. the truth will come out fairly quickly, because -- >> right. >> -- of gps and other electronic means we'll be able to tell where that aircraft was. >> fluid situation. colonel jack jacobs joining us this morning on "first look." we appreciate it, colonel, thank you. >> you bet. also breaking overnight the u.s. military confirms that four army crew members have died after their helicopter crashed at the fort hood military post in texas last night. the crew was taking part in a

routine training mission aboard a uh-60 helicopter, similar to this one. an investigation is under way and the names of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of next of kin. donald trump is not backing away from what many call an urban myth. last night he again insisted he saw thousands and thousands of muslims in new jersey cheering as the towers fell on 9/11. his evidence, first, people are tweeting to him that it happened. but also, he's pointing to a 2001 "washington post" article, although the author of that piece, and "the post," both say the reports were small and unverifiable. nbc's katy tur reports. >> reporter: after picking up controversy about supporting a muslim database -- >> birmingham, we love you. >> reporter: -- donald trump riled up voters in alabama with tales of the 9/11 attacks and terrorist sympathizers in america. >> i watched in jersey city, new jersey, where thousands and thousands of people were

airliner. it says u.s. citizens overseas should exercise vigilance when in public places, or using transportation. and avoid big crowds, especially at holiday festivals. standard advice. but getting extra attention this year. here in the u.s., the secretary of homeland security says there's no credible threat of a paris-style attack. police in many big cities remain at heightened level of awareness. new york police over the weekend conducted a long planned terror response drill, modified to apply lessons learned from the paris attacks. and police say they'll have extra security out this week for the thanksgiving day parade. homeland security's advice for people here at home, travel, attend public events, celebrate the season, but be vigilant. the aclu filed a federal lawsuit against indiana governor mike pence for pledging to block syrian refugees from settling in his state. the suit claims the plan violates the constitution's equal protection clause for singling out refugees from syria. the governor's office has not

commented. in an editorial pence said he is deeply moved by the crisis, but security gaps remain. later today, canadian prime minister justin trudeau will announce plans to resettle 25,000 syrian refugees by december 31st. cbc news quotes unnamed sources that say unaccompanied men will not be part of the program. in new orleans, an arrest has been made in the shooting of a tulane university medical student. charges against the 21-year-old are expected to include murder, attempted kidnapping and armed robbery. police say he shot peter gold who intervened when he saw the suspect dragging a woman to his suv early friday. >> he did make a full confession that he was, in fact, the person who committed that offense. >> and now he will likely spend the rest of his life in jail, as he should. >> gold is recovering from a gunshot to the stomach. he remains hospitalized in guarded condition.

we have an update now to a story we brought you yesterday. police have made a second arrest in the murder of a pastor's pregnant wife. 21-year-old jaylen watson was arrested on mon die and charged in the murder of amanda blackburn. 18-year-old larry taylor was arrested earlier in the day. blackburn was shot dead two weeks ago during a home invasion in ipgs. court documents allege taylor shot blackburn as she charged him, quote, so he wouldn't be scratched. blackburn's husband davey released a statement saying he was extremely relieved and although he wants to be hateful and angry he has decided to love and not hate. remember the texas teen whose homemade clock was mistaken for a bomb? well, now his family wants big bucks. details on that coming up. plus, sharks off the coast of florida. in a frenzy. details on this next.

look." obviously a lot of people traveling over the next couple of days. we have a new storm that's now moving into the west. this storm is going to be moving into areas of the rockies over the next couple days with some snow primarily in the higher elevations. we could get a good dose of snow out of this, too. forecast is 6 to 12 inches, pretty widespread from idaho mountains, especially wyoming. if you're going skiing on the thanksgiving holiday in jackson hole, some of the resorts near casper, you chose wisely. eventually this will push out to the plains. the timing of it is here. snow in the northern rockies wednesday, snow, ice and rain into the plains on thursday, and of course denver is in the way of this storm, too. and denver could be in for a very rude thanksgiving. we'll explain it to you here. here's the weather map for the busiest travel day of the year on wednesday. everyone in the east, you're fine. all the way through friday you're great. the snowstorm is going to be on wednesday, still in nevada, still into areas of wyoming and northern portions of utah. thanksgiving day, it brings itself out from the middle of the country, snow and temperatures crumbling into the 20s and teens in colorado. that's going to be troublesome.

and then possibly an ice storm, areas from omaha, back into western kansas, even into friday, we could be dealing with icy weather in kansas and oklahoma. so, we are going to have some travel trouble out there, especially thanksgiving day. >> wouldn't be the holidays without a little tricky travel. thank you, bill. family of texas clock teen ahmed mohammed is demanding a $15 million settlement of sorts. mohamed is the 14-year-old muslim student who was arrested in september for bringing a homemade clock to school, which was mistaken for a bomb. his lawyer sent letters to the city of irving and the irving school district demanding $10 million and $5 million respectively, as well as apologies. the letters claim mohamed and his family suffered physical and mental anguish. the city has 60 days to respond, before mohamed's attorneys decide to file a civil suit. miami police are still on the hunt for two armed robbers who stole cash registers from a walgreens on halloween night. in this surveillance video you see the suspects ripping the registers right off the counter.

then they have a shoot-out with a man outside the store who they mistook for police. and check out this incredible video of a shark feeding frenzy off the coast of florida's panhandle. the frenzy took place very close to shore where some kids were playing. lasted for about an hour. quite a sight for them. fortunately no one was injured. who will be "time's" person of the year? and the nasty back and forth between donald trump and john kasich. all right, time now for your tuesday edition of "scrambled politics." donald trump is on rival john kasich's home turf, ohio. and kasich is defending his ground, going after trump directly in a new ad, while the pro-kasich super pac does the same. the ohio governor also held two conference calls yesterday to talk about trump. but in typical trump fashion he is not backing down. trump got a mixed reaction when reading poll numbers at a rally last night. >> wow. -- only two, what happened? wow. >> then this from twitter. going to ohio, home of one of the worst presidential candidates in history, kasich. can't debate, loves obamacare. dummy. trump also released an anti-hillary clinton video on his instagram, showing the

democrat laughing while headlines, and at one point the flames from benghazi burn on the screen. >> including fbi -- >> look -- >> i don't know why that's funny. meanwhile john kasich is one of the republicans taking advantage of equal time rules on nbc, after donald trump's appearance on "snl." he and mike huckabee, jim gilmore and lindsey graham will have local ad time in key early voting states this weekend during "snl." and george pataki may be granted time, as well. the investigator fired from the benghazi committee in june has filed a federal lawsuit against the committee. he's also personally suing his chairman, congressman trey gowdy, for defamation and discrimination. gowdy originally said the air force major was fired partially

for mishandling classified information. pod his kasays that charge is totally false saying he was fired based on his military obligations and refusal to advance an agenda targeting hillary clinton. the committee tells msnbc the complaint is, quote, meritless. . and a new pew poll finds only 19% of the americans trust the government always or most of the time. among the lowest levels in the past half century. bernie sanders leads online voting for "time's" person of the year by more than double second place malala yousafzai. ted cruz is tied for 55th place in that vote and last night jimmy fallon gave an update on his campaigning. >> ted cruz's campaign announced that it's going to launch a national prayer team next month. where people will pray for ted cruz to win. then god said oh, i tuned out of
