would i approve waterboarding? and i said, well let me ask you a question, on the other side, they chop off our young people's heads. and they put them on a stick. would i approve waterboarding? you bet your ass i'd approve it. you bet your ass. in a heartbeat. >> we'll hear much more of his comments from ohio last night. it's 5:to on the east coast, 2:30 out west. this is "way too early." good morning, i'm tuesday, november 24th i'm chris jansing live once again from paris. and we begin with that breaking news. we've learned turkey has shot down a russian military jet. it happened along the border between turkey and syria. footage from turkish television shows a warplane going down in flames, in what looks like a wooded area. you can see a plume of smoke trailing behind the plane. the turkish president confirmed the news early this morning.

saying the russian jet violated its airspace. according to the turkish air force the jet was warned ten times before being shot down. let's bring in nbc news chief foreign correspondent richard engel, who is live for us in istanbul. russia -- richard, what is russia saying this morning? what else can you tell us about this incident? >> well, we have two contradicting accounts. the turkish government, as you said, says that a jet violated its airspace. that the jet was warned ten times over the course of five minutes. and that two american-made f-16s operated by the turkish air force engaged that plane, shot it down. the pilots appeared to have ejected. the russian government, however, the russian defense ministry, is -- has a totally different version of events. it says that the russian jet was on a bombing mission against isis, in syria. part of its counterterrorism mission. that it was hit by groundfire.

and that the fate of the two pilots is unknown but that they did manage to bail out of this plane before it impacted into the ground. the fate of the pilots at this stage remains unknown. there have been some helicopters reportedly seen in the area, searching for those downed pilots. but this has the potential to escalate very dramatically. what we have here is apparently a turkish nato jet firing on to a russian jet, and bringing it down. either as it was violating turkish airspace, according to the turkish government, or inside syria on a counterterrorism mission, according to russia. >> let's talk a little bit about that potential for escalation, since turkey is a member of nato, richard. what can you tell us about that? >> well, the -- this country is a major air base for nato airstrikes the u.s. has recently moved more fighter jets, f-16s

here, to bolster the counterisis mission, and you have isis in the crosshairs now by american jets, french jets, which intensified the airstrikes after the paris atrocities, and russian jets. there's very little coordination, and this is the first time in recent memory that a nato plane has shot down a russian plane in circumstances that are still disputed. >> richard engel live in istanbul, turkey, with this breaking news. we'll continue to follow it. thanks, richard. mean time the french military is carrying out new missions targeting isis in iraq and syria. fighter jets took off yesterday from france's charles de gaulle aircraft carrier. it arrived in theater just sunday. the ship is the only one of its kind in the french fleet, and according to military officials, fighter jets destroyed two targets in iraq early in the day. then later on monday, another wave of airstrikes was carried out in raqqah, syria. these new missions come after

french president francois hollande vowed to intensify airstrikes against isis following the deadly attacks in paris. u.s. officials say american warplanes destroyed nearly 300 isis oil tanker trucks yesterday along the syria/iraq border. officials say 24 precision guided bombs were dropped on the trucks near a fuel collection point. the u.s. state department has issued a worldwide travel alert for american citizens due to, quote, incountriesed terrorist threats. that alert which is to be in effect through february 24th, was issued because authorities believe the likelihood of terror attacks will continue as isis members return from syria and iraq and cite continuing threats from groups like al qaeda and boko haram as well as so-called lone wolf assaults inspired by major terrorist organizations and their recent attacks. the alert says u.s. citizens should exercise vigilance when in public places or when using public transportation. it advises to be aware of

immediate surroundings and to avoid large crowds, or crowded places, and to exercise particular caution during the holiday season, and at festivals or events. now this american travel alert comes as france announces this morning it is adding security gates at certain train stations. the gates will be installed by december 20th for passengers boarding cross-europe trains at paris and lille. meanwhile president francois hollande arrives in washington today where he'll meet with president obama at the white house this morning. the two leaders expected to discuss greater cooperation between the u.s. and russia in the fight against isis. the u.s. has not ruled out cooperation but has been skeptical that president vladimir putin will focus on the militant group, rather than force his fighting of president bashar al assad. they'll also pressure iran to keep actions in place. all of this coming together diplomatically as an explosive belt with possible links to the

terror attack is discovered in a southern paris suburb reportedly found by a street cleaner. the associated press reports the belt contained bolts and the same type of explosives used by the terrorists last friday. and that a police official said the device, which did not have a detonator, was found in the garbage and close to where a cell phone potentially belonging to suspect salah abdeslam, was pinpointed by gps on the day of the attacks. all of this as the manhunt continues in belgium, where the prime minister announced that brussels will remain at its highest alert level for at least another week, as increased security measures have virtually shut down the belgian capital. we turn now to cnbc's julia chatterley for the latest in brussels. what can you tell us about the raid, and the state of the city this morning? >> good morning. as you quite rightly said, brussels operating still at its highest level of security and will be like this for at least the next seven days. so i think the takeaway here is clearly that the threat of an

imminent terrorist attack, even a copycat of what we saw in paris, remains very much front and center. a concern for the authorities here, having said that, they want to try to bring this city back to as much normality as they can. so the lockdown that we've seen on the subway, on schools, on colleges, that's going to start unwinding from tomorrow, even if it happens in a staggered basis. but of course the other thing here is that the placework continues, as you mentioned, the final suspect in those terrorist attacks is still wanted in this country. he's still being hunted. they have made, though, a further arrest in connection to the paris attacks. that now makes four. the authorities have said look, the work is continuing, we are making progress and we are gathering information. now, more broadly across europe we've got this heightened sense of vigilance. as you also mentioned the u.s. now following suit. and i wanted to talk very briefly about that because the state department issuing this worldwide travel alert. we've seen that hit european airline stocks this morning. so i think if you're watching

what happens now in the u.s., that's something certainly to focus on. the knock-on impact there, particularly ahead, of course, of the thanksgiving holiday. greater vigilance needed. back to you. >> julia chatterley, live from brussels. thank you for that update. back here in paris, the only person facing terror charges related to the attacks has gone before a judge. he was taken into custody moments after giving a television interview where he acknowledged giving shelter to two people from belgium and said he didn't know who they were, or what they planned. among those staying at his saint-denis apartment were abaao abaaoud. french authorities have to either charge him or release him today. republican front-runner donald trump has spent the last two days defending his story he told at a rally in alabama on saturday night about watching, quote, thousands of people celebrate in new jersey as the twin towers fell on 9/11. it's a claim he defended all weekend long.

>> i watched when the world trade center came tumbling down, and i watched in jersey city, new jersey, where thousands and thousands of people were cheering as that building was coming down. >> i saw it. it was -- >> you saw that with your own eyes? >> george -- >> -- didn't happen. >> -- there were people that were cheering on the other side of new jersey where you have large arab populations. >> but polite fact reports trump's allegation flies in the face of all evidence they could find. and "the washington post" fact checker came to the same conclusion, awarding the claim four pinocchios. but yesterday, trump shot out this tweet, asking "the post" for an apology, with a link to an article of theirs from september 18th, 2001, an excerpt reads quote in jersey city within hours of two jetliners plowing into the world trade center, law enforcement authorities detained and questioned a number of people

who were allegedly seen celebrating the attacks, and holding tailgate-style parties on rooftops while they watched the devastation on the other side of the river. but when msnbc reached out to the reporter who wrote that story, he said this, quote, i do not recall anyone saying there were thousands, or even hundreds, of people celebrating. that was not the case, as best as i can remember. meanwhile, at a rally last night in columbus, ohio, trump tripled down and read aloud from "the washington post." >> during a speech recently, i said that i saw in parts of new jersey, jersey city, but parts of new jersey, i saw people getting together and in fairly large numbers celebrating as the world trade center was coming down, killing thousands of people, thousands and thousands of people. but the media was going crazy. they were having a field day. and one of my people came in, mr. trump, i have a story in

"the washington post." "washington post"? authorities say five people were shot late last night in minneapolis near the site of an ongoing protest over the fatal shooting of a black man by a police officer. while police have not released any information on possible suspects, protesters have been camped out at the site for ten days now. ever since 24-year-old jamar clark was shot and killed by police after a scuffle last sunday. witnesses claim clark was handcuffed when an officer shot him in the head though police dispute that claim saying clark was shot after going for an officer's gun. justice department attorneys are in the twin cities now as part of a federal civil rights investigation into the shooting. a key issue during their visit will be whether authorities should make videos of the fatal encounter public. including one from an ambulance

at the scene that the state's governor now says is inconclusive. and in new orleans, authorities have arrested the suspect in friday's shooting of tulane medical student peter gold, who has been hailed as a good samaritan for trying to stop an apparent abduction. police say 21-year-old euric cain confessed to his role in both crimes after his arrest yesterday morning. tulane university said gold continues to improve but remains in guarded condition. next month, british rock band cold play will release their seventh album and it will feature a very special guest, president barack obama. ♪ amazing grace how sweet the sound ♪ >> that clip of the president singing amazing grace at the funeral of mother emanuel shooting victim reverend clemente pinckney will be featured on cold play's new
