1:01 pm
together what's going on at the king supers shopping center. where there's an active shooting situation under way. there's a huge police and fire response. it's been going on now since 11:38 local time, when somebody in the vicinity of the planned parenthood that is in this shopping center, reported an active shooter. that shooter has not been found. that is according to police just a short while ago. the situation is not considered contained. people in the stores, whether they are customers or work there, have been holed up for hours now, have been told not to let anybody inside or outside as police try to contain the situation. there are three officers confirmed injured. we know that a local hospital has received three injured. we don't know if those are the police officers or if they're civilians. there are reports of an unknown amount of civilian injuries. we don't know how serious any of these injuries are.
1:02 pm
a spokesperson at the hospital that we spoke to just a short while ago didn't know either. that's how fluid the situation is. there are any number of reporters heading to the scene and they're trying to get more information. it's hard to do when police don't know everything just yet either. let's bring in clint van zandt who is one of our experts on situations such as this. in fact, you have been in many situations just like this, clint. tell us what's going on from what you can see. >> both as an fbi hostage negotiator, as a first responder, and of course as a criminal profiler, deal in situations like this. i think you did a very good job resetting where we're at. the challenge for the authorities right now is that we're told at least three police officers have been injured. the story we have so far, of course, suggests that a call came in, ostensibly from or near the planned parenthood office in this small strip mall,
1:03 pm
suggesting there was a man with a gun. the first three responding officers, we believe, came in, in three separate vehicles, all were engaged by a gunman with a long gun. when we hear that long gun, that suggests normally either a shotgun or a rifle. of course on a worst case, a semi- automatic weapon, something such as that -- >> clint, sorry, i just want to interrupt you for just a second, because it looks like we saw a couple of civilians being rushed out by law enforcement on the scene. we are seeing this live picture. a s.w.a.t. vehicle just came rushing back -- or is rushing back out again. we've seen that same vehicle do that a number much times so far. there are two ambulances right there, it looked like two women who were being run from the scene by police officers. we don't know where they came from. they might have been inside a car. we know that people might have been in their cars at the time. we know that people are stuck
1:04 pm
inside stores as well. so i just wanted to point out that that's what's going on right now, and please continue. >> yeah, one of the things law enforcement would have done is told everyone in the shooting itself, if they couldn't escape, or in the businesses nearby, to shelter in place. i'm watching the same shot that you just commented on. and again, that could suggest that they're evacuating nearby buildings to get innocent people out of the way. or they may even have active negotiations going on with the shooter and that could be individuals released. we don't know right now. and of course the challenge for law enforcement, even if they have, let's say a shooter in custody, or a shooter down, they don't know at this point, if there were multiple individuals or not. so, like every other scenario we see like this, you're going to see law enforcement continue to press until they have at least one shooter in custody.
1:05 pm
and then they're going to have to make a decision, are there other individuals involved? what type of vehicle did the shooter use to get there? is that vehicle still there? so it's a highly fluid situation. we see on the right of your screen, the tactical officers that are there. we're at least an hour's drive from denver. so even though the local law enforcement is very good. to get tactical teams on scene can easily take an hour, two hours. and again, here we are, the day after thanksgiving. we were all leaning forward in the saddle, thinking if we were going to have a terrorist related situation, it likely would have taken place on thanksgiving, but again, we never know the minds of someone who would do something like this, and why they would do it. sometimes the thinking is, let's wait until the day after and law enforcement will be less prepared. so right now, we don't know a whole lot about this situation. we know there's a lot of law enforcement on scene. we know there are tactical
1:06 pm
teams. i just saw a shot where there was at least five ambulances, stacked up, waiting, unfortunately to see if they were needed to transport other individuals. we know there are three officers that are injured. we presume shot and down. we know there are three people in the hospital, and we also are hearing that there may be multiple other injuries. and that seems to be the extent of what we know right now. hopefully law enforcement knows more. for example, do they have a shooter? do they have him or her contained in one location? those are all the things they need to find out. >> let's talk about what we're seeing right now. these ambulances have been sitting there for hours, waiting. now we see two circling and a stretcher coming out of two of them. i counted one just a moment ago. and somebody, it looks like a uniformed officer is being loaded onto that stretcher right now. >> i see the same thing,
1:07 pm
unfortunately, and obviously that suggests, we've told three officers have been hit. that may be one of the three, and it may be a fourth officer. but what it also suggests is that if there was a wounded officer, they would have got him or her out of there just like a civilian, as quick as they could. seeing that we're two hours into this situation and we're still getting people evacuated, that's not a good sign, because it suggests that there may have been people injured for the last two hours or more that law enforcement has not been able to get to until this very moment. so this is a very dramatic scene right now. we see law enforcement working as hard as they can to get the injured out. and realize, of course, their responsibility dealing with the snow, the weather they're in, is to find the shooter or shooters and make sure that person doesn't have a chance to injure anyone else like the presumed injured people we're watching
1:08 pm
right now be evacuated from the area. >> are they able to contact people inside a store? what's the priority when they cannot reach them? >> one of the things they'll try to do, try to contact in multiple ways. they'll toll the telephones inside stores or buildings. number two, everybody has a cell phone and there may be people who have already sent text messages or called out. that information would have been provided to law enforcement. so as you suggested earlier, they'll have a mobile command post on site. and they'll start trying to determine how many people they know they have in a given location. again, this may be multiple store fronts that they may have people barricaded in, hiding in, or injured in. while they're trying to figure out what they have, how do they get to them and how do they avoid anyone else getting shot. >> clint, hold that thought. we're going to take a break as we gather more information on this developing situation in colorado springs.

1:36 pm
covering this, if that gunman is inside, he likely has access to television, so he's watching what's going on. so i think it's prudent as usual, for the television networks not to show direct police activity. in essence, what the tactical teams are doing, if anything, and if that person is inside, and they can hear you and i talking, the very best thing they could do at this point is talk to law enforcement. they're not going anywhere. they're barricaded inside. there's a strong tactical perimeter around that facility, so the very best thing a shooter could do right now is to accept that call from a negotiator and find a way to get out without anybody else being injured. >> clint, i couldn't agree with you more about us not giving away police movement. and i do promise our viewers that we are very, very mindful of that, even in our questioning when we don't have visuals. obviously the police are in grave danger right now, and we

we are back live in colorado springs, colorado, where both law enforcement officials and civilians are in a very precarious situation. for the past several hours, there has been an active shooter situation, which is ongoing. gunfire has been heard as recently as just a few minutes ago. we know that several officers are injured, along with an unknown amount of civilian injuries. we know that at least three are in a local hospital and there
1:45 pm
has been an outpouring of response from law enforcement, and we now know the fbi has been called in to help as well. we do know that people have been hiding inside of stores, both customers and employees, since all this went down at about 11:38 this morning. colorado springs time. we're told that as soon as shots were fired. police were on the scene, if they were not there already. the situation is very fluid, and we are trying to get as much information as possible as we can bring it in. we're also trying to find information for you about the condition of those who have been brought to the hospital. as of now, there are a number of ambulances on the scene. we have seen some movement there but not in a little while now. but this is the scene in the, paing lot outside of a shopping center. it's called the king supers shopping center in colorado springs. it's your basic shopping center in a suburban area with lots of shops. there are a couple of banks.
1:46 pm
there's a lot of activity surrounding the planned parenthood that's in this shopping center. we have spoken to the phone with people who have been told to hide inside their stores. they are doing just that. they are staying away from the doors and windows. they've been told not to let anybody in and to not let anybody out. but at our last check, the asso shooter was still active, not contained, despite the overwhelming police presence there. let's go back to our local affiliate there in colorado springs. >> -- a waiting emergency vehicle there. no one on that gurney right there that we can see. i got to think that police are going to move their vehicles in front of these live cameras as they move on. we've seen this process for the
1:47 pm
last hour and a half or so. but more pronounced here in the last 45 minutes, of people being transported, transferred from one emergency vehicle to another. the latest word was shots fired, exchanged. our photographer on scene believes that lieutenant captain kathryn buckley said it was the planned parenthood building to begin with. report of shots fired, four officers wounded, the extent of their injuries, we don't know. >> as they brought that patient out, we understand the s.w.a.t. team with that bearcat went in and they have now transferred those. that one patient that we just witnessed, into the awaiting ambulance.
1:48 pm
folks that have been hunkered down for the better part of 3 1/2 hours have been tweeting out and contacting loved ones about their situation. we heard from king supers, for example, that 150 people were sheltered in place there at the shopping center. safety protocol. >> we've been listening to our local affiliate in colorado springs, koaa, as they continue to follow the story in their own neighborhood, as it develops. joining me on the phone is caren kesterson, you're inside a local business. update us on what you've seen and heard since we last spoke, please. >> um, well, they said that the gunman was moving and i think he was -- now he's in the bathroom. they're listening to the police scanner. so i got that pulled up on my computer now too.
1:49 pm
then my sister said that a deputy got shot in the leg, and another shot in the leg and i guess they showed him on the camera or something and he has an ak, the shooter does. i don't know if -- either the deputy or one of the officers, but my sister said, one in the hand, one in the leg, two in the shoulder. then she texted, because she's listening to the police scanner. her husband's updating her and they said that he was moving and he was in the bathroom now. >> we do just want to point out that all of this is unconfirmed at this point. we do have confirmed four injured officers at this point and an unknown amount of civilian casualties as well. we can hope at this point that there won't be any more and
1:50 pm
caren, have you heard any more gunfire since we last spoke? >> yes, i heard three. >> about how long ago? >> i don't know. time is going by so slow, so i want to say, maybe like 20 minutes, i think. >> has law enforcement contacted you at all with any new information as to what you should do? >> no. >> all right, caren, thank you very much. we'll check back with you, and i'm glad to hear that you're still safe inside your shopping center there as are so many people hiding out at this hour, as we continue to follow this breaking ns in colorado springs, where an active shooting situation is still in progress and very dangerous.

>> for those of you who may just be joining us, we are following breaking news out of colorado springs, colorado, where there's an active shooting situation in
1:54 pm
progress. it's been going on since 11:38 local time there, with at least one shooter active, as much as just a few minutes ago. police are still operating under the possibility that there may be more than one, but at this point, we do know that there's at least one active shooter in this shopping center in colorado springs, and since the first shots were fired this morning, local customers and shop keepers were told to stay inside their buildings and away from any doors or windows, called sheltering in place, which they have been doing for hours now. i want to say something that i think is more important now than -- that this has escalated, clearly, that we're not mentioning business names anymore. we're not going to say certain things that in our judgment would compromise police activity there on the ground in any way, because the last thing we want
1:55 pm
to do is put anybody, police or civilian in danger. so going forward, please just know, so i'm searching for the right words. we're trying to be very careful here. joining me now is june izu, who is an eyewitness in a nearby business. and tell us, we're on the phone. tell us what your experience has been from the start right up until this point. >> um, well, about 11:30, i think, police started to come over and started closing off the roads and everything and telling us that there was a shooting, you know, near the planned parenthood, which, you know, so, we were told to lock up the door and just stay put. >> so, police told you
1:56 pm
initially, came to the door. >> no, they didn't come -- we were trying to go outside, and they said go back in the building. go back inside, stay away from the windows, you know, because we are very close from the planned parenthood, so -- >> and tell us, as far as you have seen and heard, we have spoken with people who have heard gunfire relatively recently, within the past half hour. >> be honest with you, where i'm at is very close to planned parenthood. i haven't heard anything, but i'm sure there's police -- they are in my building right now, where we are, telling us to go hide in the back room where there are no windows. so we don't get caught in fire. >> so you're inside a business, you have employees and customers, both inside? >> yes. yes. we're hiding, you know, next to the heavy walls, not next to the
1:57 pm
windows. >> have you been given any idea as far as whether it's close to being resolved in any way? >> i have no idea. they are in front of the area, where all the windows are. they just told us to just stay put, you know, go hide behind heavy walls. >> how many hours has it been for you now that you have been hiding? >> well, that started about 45 minutes ago. about. what happened was, you know, from where i'm at, i could see everything, to the planned parenthood and everything. >> did you spot the shooter? >> no. no. no, not at all. >> how is everybody holding up in there? >> we're okay. we're holding up really well.
1:58 pm
we know there's police officers in this building, so we feel pretty secure. so -- >> okay, jun, aizu, thank you, joining us from a local building. jim cavanaugh, we're looking at a very cold, snowy day, with an ongoing, very, very dangerous situation for everyone involved. both for the civilians who are hiding out, also for the officers who are putting themselves directly in harm's way to resolve this situation. what is the latest you can add given all the developments since we last spoke? >> well, you've developed a lot of information in the last few minutes or so. and colorado springs pd s.w.a.t. appears to be inside the planned parenthood and they have engaged in gunfire with the barricaded suspect. that's been clear from all the witnesses and the reporting you've been having. so he's located.
1:59 pm
that is critical. we went for a couple hours today, where they did not know where he was. colorado springs pd had put out a new report that they did not know where he was. but they did find him inside the planned parenthood, it looks like, and they're engaging with him. that's what they want to do. they got to press the contact. the on-scene commander is pressing to contact. because you have to find the guy. once they found him, you started seeing injured come out. they're coming out behind s.w.a.t. so s.w.a.t. is able to press forward. if there's injured, they're bringing some is of them out, the injured officer, the injured people. it's not over, there's a lot of action going on. but they have located him. they've been exchanging with him. he has an ak-47, according to witnesses. an ak-47 is a devastating weapon. you see them on the news all the time, they create really awful wounds. so that's what the officers are
2:00 pm
up against. colorado pd s.w.a.t. is in, and the sheriff s.w.a.t. is also there, they're the backup. they're going to squeeze him down. they're telling the occupants of the nearby businesses where other officers are and other tactical officers, to get down, stay away from the windows. this guy could get in an elevated position and he may have run some of the building, that's a pretty large building when you see the pictures of it, with windows all around. so if they can squeeze him down to a room, a hallway, a stairway, that's what they're going to want to do, but he's going to want to be running around and shooting obviously. >> earlier, we had this whole discussion about what it means to have a gunman contained. i do want to point out that a lot of this is not confirmed for us. but in this situation, if it's a situation where he's holed up in a room, is that what you would consider having a gunman contained? >> well, yes, you have him
