2:31 am
good morning, it's thursday, december 3rd. i'm mika brzezinski. we begin with breaking news from san bernardino, california. the scene of the latest mass shooting in america. this morning we're learning new information about the suspects, reportedly husband and wife. but first, how the tragedy unfolded. >> went behind that suspect vehicle, the black suv, shots fired. >> they're shooting at us both the suv. -- cross fire. >> shooting at us. >> a deadly gun battle with police in the wake of a massacre. and manhunt terrorizing san bernardino, california. a community 60 miles east of los angeles. the first frantic calls came in just after 11:00 a.m. pacific
2:32 am
time with gunshots still tearing through the air. >> shots heard in the area of 1365 south waterman. >> male in black clothing. he's still firing rounds. >> we have at least 20 victims. >> be cautious of who is coming to you. make sure the hands are up. >> there at a social services center for the disabled police say two shooters sprayed bullets into a conference center being used for a holiday party by the county health department. a witness told the "los angeles times" that the shooters ran out of bullets, reloaded, and fired again. when it was over, 14 people were killed, at least 17 injured. it is the deadliest massacre since the mass killing at an elementary school in newtown, connecticut. and the first since columbine to be carried out by multiple attackers. first responders raced to the scene as hundreds of people ran for their lives. others sheltered in place. >> it was a shooting, she's scared. she's hiding in a closet with two other people. >> they turned off the lights and tried to block the door and
2:33 am
lock it. so that they couldn't get in if the shooters were around that area. >> officers went room to room hunting for the killers, and evacuating survivors. the shooters had fled, leaving behind an explosive device. hours passed with the community on lockdown after police followed a lead to a nearby redlands home. a street battle erupted just two miles away, with police exchanging gunfire with a black suv matching the reported getaway car. an officer was wounded, and is expected to survive after the suspects hurled what officials feared might be homemade bombs. >> in an abundance of caution the atf explosive ordnance officer responded and determined that it was just a very thick pipe with a piece of cloth that was made to look like a fuse. but it did not contain any explosives. >> in the end, 28-year-old county employee syed rizwan farook and his partner,
2:34 am
27-year-old tashfeen malik, were dead. at this time, police believe they are the only suspects. joining us from san bernardino, california, msnbc's craig melvin with the latest. craig? >> mika, good morning to you. we can tell you that of the 17 who are hurt at last check, ten of them, ten of them are listed in critical condition at area hospitals. you mentioned the 28-year-old suspect syed farook. kerry sanders will have more on the two suspects. but right now i can tell you again, like you just said, police believe that they are the only two people who were involved. there had been a third person who was detained but at this point officials believe that it was just the two of them that carried out this massacre. heavily armed suspects, turned these streets in san bernardino, we're talking a city of about 200,000, they turned these streets into a war zone. there was the mass shooting, a
2:35 am
subsequent shoot-out with police, involving, according to the police chief, at least 20 police officers. one officer was wounded during that shoot-out. we're told that officer is expected to be okay. but the question that everyone continues to ask, why? why did they do it? the police chief spoke to that last night. take a listen to what he said. >> i think that based upon what we have seen and based upon how they were equipped there had to have been some degree of planning that went into this. so i don't think they just ran home, put on these types of tactical clothes, grabbed guns and came back on a spur of the moment thing. >> they were apparently clad in some type of military gear. they had four weapons between them. at least four. two assault rifles. two handguns. the atf said a few hours ago that at least two of those guns were purchased legally. officials at this point not ruling out terrorism. the investigation continues. we expect to have another
2:36 am
update, mika, at 12:00 eastern, 9:00 local time. >> craig melvin, thank you very much. and we are learning more this morning about the two assailants accused of opening fire during that holiday party. the attackers identified as 28-year-old syed rizwan farook, and 27-year-old tashfeen malik, were a married couple, with a 6-month-old daughter, relatives say. farook, a u.s. citizen, had been employed as a county health inspector for five years. and was at a holiday gathering yesterday morning when he stormed out amid a dispute. what that dispute about remains to be seen. authorities say according to police he and his wife then returned with assault rifles, and opened fire on the celebration. a man who identified himself as farook's brother-in-law told reporters he had no idea what may have motivated the attack. >> i just cannot express that how sad i am for what happened
2:37 am
today. i mean, i -- my condolences to the people who lost their life, and i am very sad that people lost their life, and there's victims out there. i wish a speedy recovery to them, and again, i am in shock. i have no idea why would he do that? why would he do something like this? i have absolutely no idea. i am in shock myself. >> farook traveled to saudi arabia earlier this year, and returned with a wife, a co-worker told the associated press. another colleague who shared a cubicle with farook told the "los angeles times" that the people appeared to be, quote, living the american dream. joining us from san bernardino, california, nbc news correspondent kerry sanders. kerry, what more are we learning about the suspects? i'm still trying to sort of take in the fact that they had a baby six months ago. >> a baby, and that 6-month-old child apparently they left with
2:38 am
his grandmother, and then said that they were going off to a doctor's appointment, where instead they were heading over here to begin this mass shooting. so, it's a little confusing apparently even to the family as to what's going on here. we do know from coworkers that the gunman here who led this, that he apparently began growing a beard recently, in the last two years that he was expressing quietly that he was becoming a little bit more devout. a little bit more religious and then as you noted he recently traveled to saudi arabia, where he got married. and came back with his 27-year-old wife. coworkers say that for them, there were no obvious grudges. no indications that there was something wrong, that he was mostly quiet, and did his job and kept to himself. the real question i guess at this point now is, what motivated them? and we don't have that answer.
2:39 am
we do know that farook was born in the united states in illinois, to parents from pakistan. we know that his wife was from saudi arabia. we don't know whether she is now a naturalized citizen. she only recently came to this country, so likely she is not. and we're not really sure what it was that caused them to obviously plan something here because they had these homemade bombs that involved controllers to remote controlled cars made with black powder. we know that from one of his online accounts that he had that's sort of dated account, it was one of these that was set up for actually trying to find somebody to perhaps date and marry, but this aged account indicated that among the things that he liked to do was sit in his backyard with his friends and do target practice. so we do know that based on that, that he had some familiarity with weapons. >> kerry, i -- i mean, you know, in your storytelling about what
2:40 am
you're getting on the background of this couple, there are strains that it's hard not to put together. i'm just wondering what authorities are saying, or anybody is saying at this part about any type of terrorism? >> yeah, well see nobody's connecting the dots but they're also not ruling it out. they're not suggesting but then they're also not saying that he traveled to saudi arabia and perhaps she was the influence that caused him to perhaps become a little bit more radicalized. all of these are questions, and quite frankly the reason the authorities are not answering those suspicions that you might have, and other people might immediately wonder, is because they don't have the answers yet. they need to talk to family members. and the family members that they've spoken to already are not indicating, at least in first blush, with the information that's being shared with us, that that's what happened. of course, those are very important questions that need to be answered. >> the other question is what that dispute was about. what was it? happening in that party that caused him to storm out?
2:41 am
hopefully there are some witnesses that can help answer those questions at some point. hopefully. kerry sanders, thank you. >> absolutely. >> we'll be talking to you again soon. coming up, much more on the massacre in san bernardino, including dramatic video of the moment police stormed the building where dozens had just been gunned down. we're back in just a moment.

2:45 am
>> a hospital spokesperson on the tragedy that unfolded in san bernardino yesterday where 14 people were killed, 17 more wounded. the two suspects are dead, as well. sources familiar with the investigation told nbc news two of the four weapons were found to be legally purchased. we want to show you some new video from inside the inland regional center, as police swarmed in. the "los angeles times" reports at first people inside thought it was just a drill. and nurse dorothy vong even texted her husband, as much. but quickly learned it was anything but. >> i'm looking out there -- >> yeah, look. they're all geared. they're all geared up. >> rifles? >> rifles and everything. >> they're coming on -- >> they're coming on to here. >> they're running right there. >> they're coming over here?
2:46 am
>> that's where they're headed to. >> i think so. they're all right here. >> and the man in a nearby neighborhood recorded this video while seemingly crawling around his home on his stomach. here's a small section of the video. you can hear the gun battle that goes on for more than a minute between police and the suspects. [ gunshots ] >> and to capture more of the chaos a reporter for a local newspaper found himself trapped in the shoot-out between police and the suspects. he works for the press

enterprise and was trying to find the black suv that police were searching for. he says he was on san bernardino avenue when, quote, i thought oh, my god, that could be gunshots. and then he pulled over, and he continued, quote, then i see cops running in that direction just arriving, maybe six of them. and i hear more gunshots, and i grab my camera and i'm taking pictures, taking pictures of cops running with guns and then all of a sudden, a bunch more gunshots, and then i ran. yesterday's attack took place at the inland regional center. which is a state-run facility that provides services to people with developmental disabilities. but specifically the shooting took place in a conference area that the san bernardino county department of public health had rented out for a holiday party. it's a two-story building, where various community events are held. the vice president for the inland regional center's board of trustees tells nbc news that the organization provides housing and work programs, as well as therapy and social

services to more than 30,000 people with developmental disabilities. the facility's facebook page says it employs 670 staff members, and the secretary of the board of disability rights for northern california tells us it's the largest of 21 nonprofit agencies that work with the state on assisting people with conditions such as autism, cerebral palsy and epilepsy. she described the center as a quote, enormous complex with a budget of hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars. inland's regional website, which was down for much of the day yesterday, says its mission is to, quote, enhance the lives of people with developmental disabilities, and their families, by working to include them in the everyday routines and life rhythms of the community. but again, yesterday's attack took place in a conference area, where county health department employees had gathered for a holiday event. the associated press reports
2:49 am
that san bernardino county will close most of its offices for the rest of the week, at least. and coming up, the very latest on the investigation in san bernardino. and a look at some of the other stories making headlines today, including breaking news overnight in the oscar pistorius murder case that could send the olympian back to jail. "way too early" is back in a moment. its official, i work for ge!! what? wow... yeah! okay... guys, i'll be writing a new language for machines so planes, trains, even hospitals can work better. oh! sorry, i was trying to put it away... got it on the cake. so you're going to work on a train? not on a train...on "trains"! you're not gonna develop stuff anymore? no i am... do you know what ge is?

2:51 am
before i begin, i just want
2:52 am
to say that we are all thinking about the current and ongoing tragedy in california today. and i would like to have a brief moment of silence now for those who are affected. please keep the victims and their families in your prayers right now. >> that was house speaker paul ryan at last night's christmas tree lighting on capitol hill. holding a moment of silence for the victims of the massacre in san bernardino, california. the scene of just the latest mass shooting in america. the death toll stands at 14 this morning. and terrorism has not been ruled out yet. we're learning more about the suspects syed farook who apparently worked for the county, and a woman, said to be his wife, tashfeen malik, a
2:53 am
third person seen fleeing from the scene of the shoot-out is still in custody. we're going to have more on the investigation in a moment. but first, a check on some of the morning's other headlines. breaking overnight, a south african appeals court has convicted oscar pistorius of murder in the death of girlfriend reeva steenkamp. he was originally convicted of manslaughter. the double amputee olympian was sentenced to five years in prison, but was released in october after less than a year in order to serve the rest of his sentence under house arrest. pistorius now faces at least 15 years in prison. a damning new report from the house oversight committee claims that the u.s. secret service is in crisis. the report discloses several security breaches, and incidents of misconduct, for the first time, including an agent who accessed a woman's personal information, and then traveled from new york to california to ask her on a date. we've also learned of a security breach at the biden's delaware
2:54 am
home in 2013, when four people went fishing in their backyard, and were only detected when neighbors alerted officials. lawmakers also released new information on the breach that allowed an armed security guard with an arrest record to ride an elevator with the president during a visit to the cdc last september. it's unspeakable. the report states that the president's security was breached at least three times during the visit, and that the secret service failed to conduct background checks on the security guards, the chairman of the oversight committee says he's concerned for the president's safety. >> secret service is in crisis, the situation is getting worse, not better. i put this at the foot of the president, and the secretary of homeland security. i think the president is in jeopardy. and i think he needs to personally get involved. i really do worry about his safety. i really do. >> this is all being reported by "the washington post." the committee says they have been 143 security breaches over the last decade.
2:55 am
and that a staffing shortage is putting the agency's mission in jeopardy. testimony continues today in the trial of the first police officer charged in the death of 25-year-old freddie gray, the case that sparked those riots in baltimore. officer william porter has pleaded not guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter, assault, reckless endangerment, and misconduct in office. prosecutors say the officer neglected his duty by failing to give gray medical help when he was injured while riding, without a seat belt, in the back of a police van. the defense disputes that claim and says porter did check on gray and believed he may have been faking an injury. porter is one of six officers charged in the 25-year-old's death. all pleaded not guilty, and will be tried separately. coming up on "morning joe," we're going to go back live to san bernardino, california, where we are learning new information about yesterday's workplace massacre. and more about the suspects. stay with us. it takes a lot of work... to run this business.
