30 days of their 18th birthday now, too? that is an open question. not yet decided but it will be soon. everybody freak out. be soon. everybody freak out. "first look" is up next. and a good friday morning to you. this is a special edition of lu bernardino, california. we have more details about the victims involved in wednesday's shooting. authorities have released the names of the 14 victims including a father of six and a cousin of a new york giants player. we will have more on them in just a moment. president obama taking time out at the national tree lighting ceremony last night to commemorate those killed. and the families who lost loved ones saying their loss is the american people's loss. back here in california, thousands of people attended a candlelight vigil at san manuel
2:01 am
stadium, many who say they knew victims and victims' families. the largest mosque in san bernardino county held a prayer vigil honoring the victims and urging people not to link islam or the islamic community with the attacks. and we're learning more about the shooters, syed farook and his wife tashfeen malik. farook appears to have been radicalized and in contact with people with extremist views and the four guns purchased were done so legally. jay, as you've been following the story over the last 24 hours, we have been getting a lot of information, it is the first 24 hours of forensic data coming in about the suspects. >> it appears they were leading a double life, richard, here. a lot of the neighbors, co-workers say, hey, we didn't see this at all. they were quiet, they were calm, never any problems, while they were stockpiling ammunition, explosives, building homemade bombs, a lot going on in that house that no one knew anything
2:02 am
about. >> what everybody is asking, even asked 100 times, the motive. >> yeah, and that's the key. that's what police, that's what federal agents are trying to determine right now. and they're using computer correspondents as well as plans to build these explosives as a key to maybe finding out what they were thinking about, what the motive may have been here, was this planned long before or did something happen at that party that sparked this, that brought it to the front before they had planned to attack, use these weapons, use these explosives. still no real answers yet. going to take some time according to investigators. >> what do we see in the next 24 hours? >> we see them continue to interview a lot of people inside the room at the time of the attack, a lot of the family members of the suspects in this case who are cooperating, by the way. they want to get to the bottom of who these people were, and only then according to the agents i've talked to can they begin to explore how connected they were with others maybe
2:03 am
overseas, maybe online. >> jay, as you follow so many of these stories in the past here, we have the names of the victims. that's so important for this somewhat small town of san bernardino city, 200,000 people. >> i think it is key. and like you talked about coming into this, there are a lot of people here who if they didn't know someone inside, they know a friend of someone inside. it really affects everyone in this community. and it is key to begin the healing process. a lot of people talk about that. it is going to be a tough process in this town, a lot of people close to those who were inside, those who were wounded, and now they begin that difficult process as they go through the holidays. >> as we start the first weekend, nbc's jay gray. thank you so much. the names of all 14 people killed in this massacre have been released. morgan radford has more on what we learned about these men and women. >> reporter: this was the moment ryan reyes found out his partner had died. until now, ryan still had hope
2:04 am
that daniel kaufman made it out of work alive. >> i immediately freaked out, tried to call him, text him. >> reporter: kaufman was listed among the 14 people killed at the inland regional center when an office holiday party became a target. among them, michael wetzel, a father of six, coached youth soccer. damien meins, a health worker, played santa for children. sierra clayborn, a sister, loved protecting people as a health inspector. and nicholas thalasinos, a loving husband. >> i'm sure he went down fighting and protecting people. >> reporter: his wife jennifer says he knew the gunman syed farook. >> he knew syed. he worked with him. he never had anything bad to say about him. >> reporter: he wore traditional tassels. his wife thinks he may have been targeted. >> he believed in the jewish tradition and i feel my husband was basically martyred. i'm wondering if maybe they did get into an argument because my husband was very outspoken.
2:05 am
>> reporter: tense moments unfolding with each passing minute. 21 were wounded, several critical. >> i will leave it for the patients themselves to tell their own stories. >> reporter: families of the survivors speaking out. >> doors opened, gunman started shooting, everyone, you know, hit the floor. >> reporter: kathie's sister was shot, the bullet still in her body. >> the bullet currently is still somewhere in her abdomen and we're just waiting. >> reporter: waiting and praying. >> you never think it is going to hit that close to home until it happens. >> reporter: but it did. families now asking for support and answers. >> nbc's morgan radford with that. san bernardino police lieutenant mike madden was the first officer on the scene of wednesday's mass shooting. a 24-year veteran who normally has a desk job and was on his way to lunch when that call went out. and last night he spoke about that horrific scene he encountered. take a listen. >> i'll tell you, it was something that although we train
2:06 am
for it, it is something you're never actually prepared for. my goal was to assemble an entry team and enter into the building to engage the active shooter. this mind set and this type of training became indoctrinated in us after the columbine incident and that was the goal. as we made our way around to the east side, it was immediately evident that the reports that we were getting were 100% true. there were victims who were clearly obviously deceased outside of the conference room, and i relayed that information to the other responding officers and again requested assistance. it was unspeakable the carnage that we were seeing, the number of people who were injured and unfortunately already dead, and the pure panic on the face of those individuals that were still in need, and needing to be
2:07 am
safe. and when we entered, there was fresh gunpowder and the smell of gunpowder in the air leading me to believe there was, in fact, there were, in fact, shooters still. it is extremely loud. the fire alarms were going off. there were -- there were people who were obviously injured and obviously in great amounts of pain. and that was evident in the momemon and wails we heard in the room, we had fire sprinklers going off in the room, so that added to further chaos. i noticed upon entry there is a christmas tree in there, all the tables were decorated for a christmas party, and it just -- it just seemed so senseless that, you know, here is people going into their holiday festivities and now we were dealing with death. there were many officers who did extraordinary jobs yesterday for our department and also for all of the agencies who responded so
2:08 am
quickly. it was just -- it was -- it was true ly overwhelming to see all of the agencies that got here and got here in a hurry, to provide us assistance. nobody hesitated. people knew what their job was, their job was to try to bring some calm to chaos. >> now to shiba russell, my colleague there in new york city. and shiba, you can see from the lieutenant that ark of trying to move forward and part of that, we're now closer and more forward than we have ever been here, closest to the crime scene right behind us. >> there are still more details that we are sure to learn about today. richard lui reporting for us live from california. we are going to turn to political reaction now, to the shooting in california. and it was a big part of a busy thursday on capitol hill. senate republicans overwhelmingly rejected new gun control legislation. twice yesterday democrats tried to attach new provisions on to a budget bill, including the ability to bar suspected
2:09 am
terrorists from buying guns. the bill itself was a major it now heads back to the house where it is expected to clear. the white house said president obama will veto the bill. the other big move by the senate, they passed a $305 billion, five-year transportation infrastructure bill. it is the largest of its kind in a decade. and not a moment too soon. current funding in the federal highway trust fund expires today. there is a big omission. the zdraga act is reportedly not included. bill karins with your weekend weather is straight ahead. and the second amendment under fire as president obama and the candidates weigh in. "first look" is back in three minutes. constipated?

2:22 am
they say would infringe on their second amendment rights and there is no middle ground here, that even the reforms that maybe people could agree on, there is so little trust on either side and so much frustration that in two years since newtown, so little has gotten done that no one is going to find any common ground here, even things like the bill we saw yesterday trying to get people on the terror watch list, not to be able to buy guns. >> the vote was closed around tightening the background check system. is this something we could see grow legs in the future here over the next couple of weeks? especially with president obama? >> i think we really thought we could have background check loopholes close after newtown. there was so much opposition, they got close but couldn't get there. >> another big story coming out of the senate today, huge voting to defund planned parenthood and repeal large portions of obama care. this is one week after the shooting in colorado, what do you make about the timing of this particular vote? >> there is so much opposition to any kind of funding for planned parenthood, even when it is funding, they're not funding abortions the republicans
2:23 am
oppose. they're funding -- women's health care. and there is so much, such a polarize the issue and so little trust as we see. this is another issue we see such a political stalemate. the one thing they do agree on is repealing that part of obama care we saw yesterday, the cadillac tax, 40% ex-ize that no one likes it, it is the one thing -- there is that moment of unity. but it creates an $87 billion budget short fall. that's big. >> what implications do you see here, jane that this particular vote on planned parenthood could have on the republicans running for re-election and the swing states next year? >> you know, i talk to voters on the trail, they just kind of don't like this issue, particularly the conservative voters. it is not something important to really conservative primary voters. not going to be a problem in the republican national election. as you say, those swing state voters, that is going to be something you're going to see. the ads will say they voted to defund women's health care.
