i'll tell you, it was something that though we train for it, it is something you're never actually prepared for. when we got the call, i oversee dispatch, it is one of my functions and responsibilities

with the police department. and i know my dispatchers. i know the tone of their voice. i know the severity of calls as they're going out. and i could hear it in our dispatchers' voice that this was actually happening. this was a real event. and it was the event that, you know, we have an active shooter, we have an active shooter going on in our city. >> that was the first officer on the scene of wednesday's massacre here in san bernardino, describing for the very first time publicly the moment that he got the call about the shooting. this morning, we are also learning more about the husband in this married killing duo, including reports he's been in contact with extremists, local and internationally. 5:30 on the west coast -- excuse me, 5:30 on the east coast. 2:30 here out west. this is "way too early."

and a good morning to you. it is friday, december 4th. i'm craig melvin bernardino, california. the hunt for answers to the massacre here continues this morning. the fbi has taken over the investigation into the exact motive of the killers. while evidence points to both religion fueled extremism and potential anger at the shooters' co-workers, who were among the 14 dead and 21 wounded here at the scene. even top officials including president obama himself were reluctant to pinpoint the cause. >> we don't know why they did it. we don't know at this point the extent of their plans. we do not know their motivations. it is possible that this was terrorist related. but we don't know.

it is also possible that this was workplace related. >> yet many signs point to the radicalization of american born 28-year-old syed farook. authorities tell nbc news that he was in fact in touch with persons of interest, here in the los angeles area who have expressed jihadist views as well as some overseas, this as police release photographs from the scene of wednesday's shootout that wounded two officers and killed farook and his wife. pakistani born tashfeen malik, who immigrated to the united states from saudi arabia on a k-1 fiance visa. the couple 76 rounds, prepared to fire many more, carrying multiple 30 round magazines, many taped together. in total, they carried 1600 bullets into the gun battle with two handguns and two legally

purchased assault style rifles. malik's appeared to have been modified to accept high capacity magazines, while farook's tampered with in an attempt to fire multiple rounds at once, though that attempt appears to have failed. police returned fire shooting 380 rounds, we found out last night, 380 rounds in the gun battle at and around the black suv that was rented three or four days before the slayings. police found three pipe bombs at the social services center, stitched together on a remote controlled car. as seen in these photos from cbs news. they also recovered 12 pipe bomb type devices, a slew of ammunition with thousands more of rounds of ammunition at the couple's home as well. and new this morning, lester holt sitting down with the brother-in-law of syed farook, he said there was absolutely no indication that syed may have

espoused radical beliefs nor any warning of what was to come. >> and what is the outcome? you left your 6-month-old daughter, you know, in this life. some people cannot have kids, god give you a gift of a daughter, and you left that kid behind. what did you achieve? i don't know what message they would left. >> are you angry at your brother-in-law for doing this? >> absolutely. very angry. very upset and angry. >> and for leaving his daughter? >> yeah. it hits me every few hours that -- it makes me angry what he did now. >> the couple responsible for the deaths of those 14 folks and injuring 21 others were careful not to raise the suspicions apparently of anyone around them. nbc news' stephanie gosk talked

to those who knew farook and they say they never saw anything like this coming. >> syed farook came to the mosque two years ago, looking to heat up his lunch. he would go on to pray here three or four times a week. >> we never saw him curse at anyone, disrespect anyone, he was always a very nice guy. >> the assistant imam had no idea who was behind the shooting until three officers showed up at his home. >> open the door, gun pointed at my face, with a flashlight, i mean, what did i do to deserve a gun being pointed at me at my door? >> all three of the men are shell shocked by the news. >> he was an american citizen. he had a good paying job. he had a family. he was living the american dream. he had everything he could have. >> farook graduated from college and worked as a health inspector. public records show he made more than $70,000 a year. certifying restaurants like the five and fly pizza place. when he was looking for a wife on dating sites, farook was described as calm, cool and thoughtful. he liked to hang out in his

backyard and shoot target practice with friends, and was looking for a girl who would have the same outlook and wear a hijab. he found her. tashfeen malik, a pakistani, they got married in saudi arabia two years ago at the grand mosque in mecca. >> i mean, imagine to say i got married in the holiest place of islam. >> farook helped his wife get a visa to the u.s. when malik got pregnant, she registered at target. a car seat, diapers, bath soap. but behind the seeming normalcy were farook and his wife, becoming radicalized. did your mosque radicalized syed? >> never. >> and -- >> that would be the question a lot of people will ask. >> there is nothing radical in islam. nothing radical at all happen here. >> even so, hours after the shooting, the mosque became a target for anti-muslim hatred. >> i hope some psychopathic [ bleep ] does something to you. >> look at the harm came out of

it, we're fearing for our lives, we're fearing for the muslim community. >> that was nbc's stephanie gosk reporting there. one of the survivors of the mass shooting sat feet away from the suspect for years. patrick bacari shared a cubicle with his co-worker and was se seated at the same banquet table when farook disappeared. he said he was in the bathroom when the violence began. >> i get ready to return, i hear explosions, the walls pummeling, i look back at the mirror, i see i'm bloody on my face. as i go to exit, not knowing what is going on, i could see the bullet holes higher on the wall, so i told everyone we're being attacked, get on the floor, and we just secured the restrooms so nobody could enter. i laid on the floor and put my feet against the door. and i had the other gentleman beside me do the same.

he wasn't going to be able to get in. i guess if he did, it would be over our dead bodies. when the s.w.a.t. team finally came and we opened the door and exited the restroom, i exited with everybody. basically tried to run as fast as we could away from the building. and follow whatever procedures they wanted. i told them i was a medic. another guy said he was and one of my good friends there, she was shot and so i tried to render her aid with what minimal equipment we had. >> san bernardino police lieutenant mike madden was one of the first responding officers on the scene wednesday. he says despite active shooter training, during his 24 years on the force, nothing, nothing prepared him for the, quote, unspeakable carnage he and his team encountered while trying to clear that conference room. >> as we entered, into the conference room, that the situation was surreal.

it was something that i don't think, again, we prepare for and they try to -- active shooter we talk about sensory overload, they try to throw everything at you to prepare you for dealing with that. what you're seeing, what you're hearing, what you're smelling, and it was all of that and more. it was unspeakable, the carnage that we were seeing, the number of people who were injured and unfortunately already dead. and the pure panic on the face of those individuals that were still in need, and needing to be safe. we asked -- we got as many people out as quickly as we could. we went further into the building and that was a difficult choice to have to make as well, passing people that we knew were injured and in need of assistance, but our goal at that time had to be trying to locate the shooters, and deal with them

before we could get further assistance in for those people in need of medical attention. >> last night, some 3,000 to 4,000 people filled the san manuel baseball stadium for a candlelight vigil to honor the victims. civic leaders, the city's mayor, they all spoke, expressing their condolences for the victims. msnbc's thomas roberts met some of the people who just felt like they had to be together last night. >> every single person in there mattered, regardless of, you know, who they were, their status or they're very important, you know. some child doesn't have their mother today. it is just -- it is a big deal. >> even though we don't know at this point what happened, i don't think that that really makes a big difference in how people have been affected by the sadness, the overwhelming -- the feeling of being overwhelmed and the frustration. it is senseless. it makes no sense at all. >> there was also a vigil at the

largest mosque in san bernardino county. mosque leaders released a statement yesterday saying in part they are paying -- they are praying for the swift recovery of the injured. the san bernardino county coroner released the names of all 14 victims of wednesday's massacre. 12 of them, 12 of the 14 were county employees. among the dead, 37-year-old michael wetzel. married father of six. 58-year-old damien meins, a married father of two. 27-year-old sierra clayborn, a recent addition to the team of county inspectors. and nicholas thalasinos, a devout messianic jew. >> he knew syed. he worked with him. and he never had anything bad to say about him. but i'm wondering if maybe they did get into an argument because my husband was very outspoken. obvious he believed in the

jewish tradition and i feel that my husband was basically martyred. and i'm sure that he went down fighting and protecting people. >> here is nbc's morgan radford with more on the other lives lost in wednesday's attack. >> reporter: this was the moment ryan reyes found out that his partner had died. until now, ryan still had hope that daniel kaufman made it out of work alive. >> i immediately freaked out, tried to call him, text him. >> reporter: kaufman was listed among the 14 people killed at the inland regional center when a office holiday party became a target. other victims, bennetta bet-badal, fled iran at 18, to escape extremism. robert adams leaves behind a wife and 20-month-old daughter. isaac aminos remembered as a great husband.

tin nguyen to be married next year. and harry bowman, 46. yvette velasco, 14 nint victims taken too soon. families now asking for support and answers. >> that was nbc's morgan radford reporting there. yesterday, the senate, the upper chamber, rejected several gun control measures introduced in response to wednesday's attack. joe manchin and pat toomey reintroduced their plan to expand gun background checks. it failed in the months after new towne a newtown and failed again yesterday. they also rejected senator dianne feinstein's amendment to prevent people on the government no fly list from buying guns. the house voted down that same measure earlier this week. more than a dozen white house hopefuls descended on washington, d.c. yesterday for a forum hosted by the republican jewish coalition.
