"first look" starts right now. good morning, everyone, thanks for being with us. i'm shannon mulaire. has donald trump gone too far this time? political rivals are lining up to condemn his latest controversial proposal, a complete shutdown of muslims entering the u.s. until leaders, quote, figure out what's going on. last night he dug in his heels. >> we have to figure it out. we can't live like this. it's going to get worse and worse. you're going to have more world trade centers. it's going to get worse and worse, folks. we could be politically correct or we could be stupid. but it's going to get worse and worse. >> trump's rivals are stepping back in a big way. not a single gop candidate has agreed with trump using words like ridiculous and downright dang. and no surprise from the democrats, hillary clinton is calling the situation reprehensible and prejudiced. and bernie sanders rallied against demagogues.

even conservative stalwart dick cheney is speaking up. he says the ban is against everything we stand for and believe in. but how about this for a reaction? retweeted almost 6,000 times from the democratic mayor of st. petersburg, florida, i'm hereby barring donald trump from entering st. petersburg until we fully understand the dangerous threat posed by all trumps. let's bring in nbc's tracie potts live in washington for us. good morning, tracie. >> hi there, shannon. good morning. so we are tracking even more reaction that we'll show you in just a moment. and also, looking into what is behind this idea from donald trump. he's been citing a poll from the center for security policy that found more than one in five american muslims do, at times, support violence in the u.s. to achieve their objective. trump says we can't afford that type of hatred. right now he looks like he's out there on his own on this one. overnight donald trump doubled

down on his idea of closing our border entirely to muslims. >> they have no respect for human life. so we have to do something. don't worry about profiling. i promise, i will defend you from profiling. i promise. >> reporter: muslim leaders call it reckless and un-american. >> donald trump sounds more like a leader of a lynch mob than a great nation like ours. >> reporter: democrats tweeted, hillary clinton, declaring war on islam or demonizing muslim americans, plays right into the hands of terrorists. bernie sanders, trump wants us to hate all muslims. martin o'malley calls him a fascist demagogue, even republicans are distancing themselves. >> saying we're not going to let a single muslim into this country is a dangerous overreaction. >> no, that is not my policy. >> it goes against everything we stand for and believe in. >> reporter: jeh johnson who oversees customs and border control. >> we must not force american muslims to run and hide, and retreat to the shadows. >> reporter: legal scholars

question whether it's even legal to close our borders to certain people. based solely on religion. so, what's the political impact of all this? latest polls show trump up by 13 percentage points. but monmouth university's got him down by five behind ted cruz, who in that poll is now holding the first place. >> interesting stuff. tracie, thank you. the fbi says the terrorists who killed 14 last week in san bernardino were radicalized for quite some time. although, where and by whom is still unknown. syed farook and tashfeen malik were seen at shooting ranges in the area. nbc news has learned farook went to this range the sunday and monday before the shootings for two to three hours, firing a number of weapons, including an assault rifle. and we now have our first look of the couple entering the country to the back in 2014. nbc's morgan ratford is in san bernardino with more. >> reporter: well, shannon, the fbi now calling this

investigation one, on, quote, a massive scale, saying that they confiscated 19 pipe bomb making components from that home and they said that this couple had been radicalized for quite some time now. even, they've gone target practice shooting just days before this massacre. of the five guns that were confiscated, two were registered and purchased by enrique marquez. i went to his home on sunday and spoke with a neighbor who said in the past few months his behavior had become increasingly erratic and odd. he said after two years of dropping her son off home from school, he pretended like he didn't even know her just months ago, when she ran into him at the local walmart. so the fbi is not only focusing on him, they detained him for questioning, although they are saying he has not been named a suspect. they're also focusing on the mother of syed farook. this is the mother who law enforcement officials say were living inside the home with the couple, in a home that was effectively a bomb making factory. so lots of questions investigators are asking this week, namely how, when and by whom this couple was

radicalized. shannon? >> all right, morgan, thank you. america's seen a spike in gun sales following the san bernardino terror attack. last friday saw record-setting gun sales and over 185,000 new background checks were processed by the fbi. nbc's kevin tibbles reports. >> reporter: as the national debate rages over gun control, guns are selling. many worried americans like this family visiting local shops, ready to buy. >> maybe a terrorist might not knock down my door but when mayhem starts to happen i want to be prepared. >> reporter: they aren't alone. fbi statistics show a marked increase in the number of firearm background checks related to gun sales, following each mass shooting in america. a 15% jump following ft. hood in 2009. a 17% increase after aurora, colorado in 2012. and a 38.7% spike after the

school shooting in newtown, connecticut. >> this 24-hour, live shopping in thework -- >> reporter: and coming in january, gun tv. a specialty channel dedicated to firearms. one study suggests there could be fewer mass shooting casualties if more people were armed. >> a small portion of concealed carry can cut down casualties by 5% to 15%. >> reporter: but in october's oregon college shooting, some people were armed and ten people died. >> the gun lobby wants us to believe that more guns is the solution to this problem. if that were true, given that there are over 300 million guns in this country, we'd be the safest nation in the developed world. the reality is, americans are 20 times more likely to be murdered by a gun than in any other country. >> that was nbc's kevin tibbles reporting. attorney general loretta lynch says the justice department is monitoring the anti-muslim rhetoric that has emerged following last week's

san bernardino shooting. lynch added that federal law enforcement prosecutes deeds and not words, and americans shouldn't let rhetoric turn into violence. meanwhile islamic residents in kansas city took part in an annual march celebrating their community, and a prophet who stood up to terrorism centuries ago. this year's march took on added meaning with members declaring terrorism is not islam. and being muslim means not harming others. one man added nearly all of the islamic world condemns terrorism. >> 99% of islam world condemns terrorists. and the terrorist is very minority in islam. and not the realize lamb. the true islam is for peace. >> many also chanted yes, yes, peace during that march. u2 had a very special guest at their concert in paris monday night. >> nothing left except to introduce you to some people whose lives will forever be a

welcome back to "first look" on this tuesday. all the bad weather in our country is in the pacific northwest. heavy rain yesterday, it was the second storm in three days. they have a new one coming in today, and another one on thursday. and you can see all the flooding problems they've already had to deal with. flood watches are in effect. we have some snow warnings. winter storm warnings. the highest of elevations. you can see our storm system here, it's cranking up to the gulf of alaska. big old storm. and this storm has connections into the warm tropics here of the pacific. and this is just a fire hose coming up into the northwest. that's why we're going to see some heavy rainfall over the next couple days. already we're getting a little bit of shower activity. that next batch of heavy rain up towards the olympics. flooding today will likely be up there somewhere near seattle. rain fall amounts could see the possibility rate here of 5 to 7 inches of rain over the next three to four days with our series of storms. we're also going to get some snow out of this. we're not going to see like epic amounts but the high terrain, also the northern rockies, and the best news is that some of the snow is going to get into

the mountains that desperately need it for the snow pack where the drought is the worst there near yosemite. everywhere east of the rockies is warm still. a little bit of fog in the great lakes but the west is getting what they need. >> all right. good news there. bill, thank you. now to some breaking news this morning. early this morning, a judge granted convicted killer oscar pistorius bail for $688. the double amputee olympian will be electronically monitored, and will remain under house arrest. pistorius was convicted by south africa's supreme court of appeal last week for the 2013 valentine's day murder of girlfriend reeva steenkamp. the former olympian known as the blade runner will be sentenced april 18th. the minimum sentence for murder in south africa is 15 years. a paris-bound flight from san francisco was diverted to trudeau airport in montreal late last night because of an anonymous bomb threat. anxious air france passengers tweeted out photos from the aircraft before they were evacuated. authorities are inspecting the

plane that was supposed to arrive in france this morning. seattle police have released video that we have edited showing a high-speed chase, and shooting. the suspect, a 35-year-old white male branded two handguns at businesses in downtown seattle and proceeded to steal three cars. officers were then able to locate the suspect and began pursuit. the suspect opened fire on police during the chase, and later crashed with police cruisers. a shoot-out then took place, and the suspect was killed. two officers were injured in the crash. the officers involved in the shoot-out have been placed on routine paid administrative leave. boston college has confirmed that 30 students, including 10 members of the men's basketball team, have gotten sick after eating at a local chipotle. that restaurant has since been closed. the department of health is investigating whether or not the incidences are connected to e. coli outbreaks at other chipotle restaurants nationwide. so far there have been 52
