news/"wall street journal" poll, almost six in ten americans oppose his proposal, with only 25% supporting it. but among republicans, support for the ban outnumbers the opposition, 42-36. still his rivals are on the attack, and last night hillary clinton said she does not find donald trump funny. >> but now he has gone way over the line, and what he's saying now is not only shameful, and wrong, it's dangerous. >> even ben carson's getting in on the action. he wrote an op-ed in the uk's "the telegraph" saying donald trump may be afraid of muslims but he needs to face that fear. and just hours ago, after being endorsed by a key new england police union yet another bold proposition. a very strict executive action. >> anybody killing a police officer, death penalty. it's going to happen. okay? can't go. we can't let this go. >> but there could be trouble on the horizon. early signs of a fracture in the

unofficial cease-fire between trump and the fast-rising ted cruz. nbc's tracie potts is in washington for us this morning. tracie could that detente between trump and cruz actually be over? >> well, it's possible. and if you take a look at the numbers, cruz certainly has a reason to take on trump. especially with ben carson out of the way in some of the latest polls. now we're taking a look this morning at a bunch of numbers when it comes to donald trump, as you said, for people who thought he'd be off the radar by now he seems to be defying the odds. his numbers are growing. as signs declaring him a racist go up at donald trump's d.c. hotel, and rivals urge him to leave the party -- >> don't let the door hit you in the butt. >> reporter: our new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll show 77% of republicans like trump's style. >> people are saying, you know, trump is right. but more than half of americans think his plan to ban muslims is wrong. >> the front-running candidate for president, he's not a serious man. >> reporter: trump canceled his trip to israel amid criticism. >> most people are relieved that

friends up north. just hours ago a canadian military plane carrying 163 syrian refugees arrived at toronto's airport. prime minister justin trudeau was there to greet them. after processing, the refugees will get a meal, and winter clothing. trudeau plans to resettle 25,000 syrian refugees by the end of february. quite the contrast. the u.s.-led airstrikes against isis have taken out the terror group's finance minister. a u.s. military spokesman says recent strikes killed abu salah who is described as one of the most experienced members in the group's financial network. a senior leader responsible for the group's extortion activities, and another senior leader, were also killed in recent weeks. now this comes as a new "new york times"/cbs poll shows americans are more fearful about the likelihood of nor terrorist attack than at any time since the weeks after 9/11. 44% of americans thinking an attack is very likely in the next few months. meanwhile, officials are

continuing their investigation into the san bernardino shooters. and now, new leads have pointed investigators to a lake only a few miles from where the mass shooting happened. the fbi has deployed dive teams to search for possible new evidence. nbc's miguel almaguer has the latest. >> reporter: the fbi sent divers to search a lake three miles from where the shooting took place. authorities said it was related to their investigation, but declined to say how. >> we're seeking evidence of anything that had to do with this particular crime. >> reporter: mean time, investigators continue to question syed farook's friend enrique marquez. officials say he's speaking freely to the fbi after going on a drinking binge following the massacre, and now feels remorse. police say he bought the two assault rifles that ended up used in the shooting. he has not been arrested or charged. investigators say he told them that farook discussed staging an attack in the l.a. area in 2012.

possibly at a university or a big public gathering, but got cold feet when four southern california men were arrested and charged with plotting to kill u.s. soldiers in afghanistan. authorities are looking at whether farook knew one of those men. marquez and farook once lived next door to each other in this neighborhood and were close friends. and officials say farook's brother, also named syed, is married to a ukrainian woman whose sister is married to marquez. officials tell nbc news they're looking at whether that marriage was a sham, a favor he did for farook. neighbors say they had no idea marquez had a wife. marquez's mother has told nbc news she didn't know her son was married either. she says all she wants to say is as a mother is, quote, he was a great kid. nbc's miguel almaguer reporting. first lady michelle obama is many things. now she can add rapper to her resume. check it out.

good friday morning. the storm we've been talking about all week long in the northwest is on the move this weekend. still very impressive on satellite imagery. here's how it's going to affect the country this weekend. east coast no problems at all. middle of the country, you're the one that's going to have a chance of some severe weather, maybe even a few rare december tornadoes. those two words don't usually come together. for today, very warm, possible record heat in areas from oklahoma through areas of the ohio valley. d.c. near 70 degrees. all the stormy weather there in the northwest and into the rockies. by saturday our storm is now pushing into the middle of the country. notice denver drops into the 30s, with chance of snow. very warm and stormy. we will have a chance of some severe weather on saturday afternoon into the evening. area at risk, about 10 million people in this area of yellow. that's i-35 from wichita southwards to oklahoma city, dallas to fort worth. isolated strong storms, san antonio to houston. not a tornado outbreak but we

will have to watch out for a few strong storms. then into sunday. heavy rain moves from arkansas to st. louis to chicago to michigan. we're still very warm up the east coast. should have a record high in new york city of 67 degrees in the middle of december, gigi. that doesn't happen very often. the record for new york city 64. it should easily break it. >> i'm going sun bathing. thanks for the tip. >> you won't be the only one. >> all right. we do have some breaking news from kern county, california this morning. a medical helicopter crashed in a field while flying to a nearby hospital. there are no reported survivors. four people confirmed dead. a search was started last night after ground control lost contact with the chopper. the fire department official stated the chopper went down in dense fog. connecticut governor danielle malloy announced plans to issue an executive order yesterday. people on the no-fly list will be banned from buying guns in the state. these individuals will also be denied gun permits. governor malloy will be the first to sign an executive order

of this kind. former oklahoma city police officer daniel holtzclaw was found guilty by a jury yesterday. he was convicted on 18 counts of sexual assault, rape and other offenses. the jury recommended a total of 263 years in prison, served consecutively. sentencing set for january 21st. . michael cavallari, brother of reality star kristin cavallari was found dead in utah yesterday. according to the local sheriff's office, search crews found a body believed to be michael's about five miles from his car. kristin cavallari posted a photo of herself as a child with her brother on instagram stating, quote, you had such a good heart and will be forever missed. on a lighter note a must-see jon stewart imitation of donald trump. and harrison ford's reality check.
