convention? we'll have more on the high-ranking strategy session. and courtroom breakdown. a former oklahoma city police officer on trial for raping several women during traffic stops falls into tears as the guilty verdict is read. it is 5:30 on the east coast it 2:30 out west, this is "way too early." good morning, everyone. it is friday, december 11th, i'm shiba russell. national security and terror is are in the front of voters' minds in a way they haven't been since the terrorist attacks of september 11th. a new york/cbs news poll finds 79% of americans believe an attack in the u.s. is very, or somewhat likely, in the next few
2:31 am
months. the 44% who say very likely is the highest number polled since october 2001. seven in ten americans now call isis a major threat to u.s. security. the highest level since the poll began asking the question last year. terrorism and isis are now considered the most important issue in the u.s., up 15 points from just four weeks ago. and among likely republican primary voters, donald trump is viewed as the most able candidate to handle terrorism followed by ted cruz and marco rubio. last night trump accepted the backing of the new england police benevolent association, where he promised to institute the death penalty for those who kill police officers nationwide. he also talked about national security. >> one of the first things i do in terms of executive order, if i win, will be to sign a strong, strong statement that will go out to the country, out to the world, that anybody killing a
2:32 am
policeman, a policewoman, a police officer, anybody killing a police officer, death penalty, it's going to happen. okay? can't go. we can't let this go. what i said the other day, all of a sudden i'm watching the shows this morning, and i'm watching the shows tonight, well, you know, trump has a point, the visa system is not working. this woman came in on a marriage visa. and she was totally radicalized. and she came in, and all of a sudden they're saying, it's not working. the visa system. and then another show is talking about something else. not working. we've got to get down to the problems. we can't worry about being politically correct. we just can't afford any more to be so politically correct. people have to be vigilant. people have to keep their eyes
2:33 am
open. if they did that you wouldn't have had the world trade center. of course if they did what i said you would have had osama bin laden killed before he ever got to the world trade center. you know that. >> all right. now to another poll here, an nbc/"wall street journal" poll finding voters largely opposed to trump's proposal for a quote total and complete shutdown of muslims entering the united states. only 25% are in favor. 57% are against. republicans are split on the question. 42% in favor, 36% against. and 41% of all voters find trump's campaign statements and approach to issues, quote frequently insulting and wrong. however 40% of republicans say trump is quote, telling it like it is. the senate judiciary committee has approved an amendment to condemn trump's muslim ban. ranking member patrick leahy of vermont offered the sense of the senate amendment to put the opinion of the body on record. >> this is a sense of the senate that the united states must not
2:34 am
bar individuals from entering into the united states based on their religion. as such action would be contrary to the fundamental principles on which this nation was founded. >> well, nine democrats and seven republicans, including chairman chuck grassley and lindsey graham voted for the amendment. four republicans voted no, including presidential candidate ted cruz, whose office called the vote nothing more than a political stunt. last night democratic front-runner hillary clinton stopped by the set of late night with seth meyers, and in between some lighter moments she unleashed a pointed attack on her republican counterpart, donald trump. >> you know, i have to say, seth, i no longer think he's funny. >> yes. i will say i started -- >> and what he's saying now is not only shameful and wrong, it's dangerous. this latest demand that we not let muslims into our country really plays right into the
2:35 am
hands of the terrorists. and i don't say that lightly. but it does. he is giving them a great propaganda tool. a way to recruit more folks from europe, than the united states. and because it's kind of crossed that line. i think everybody, and especially other republicans, need to stand up and really say enough, you've gone too far, that's not who we are, that's not the kind of country that we believe we are. and we're just not going to tolerate it. >> clinton is set to outline her own counterterrorism strategy next week in minnesota. her campaign says the speech will focus on combatting domestic radicalization. fbi divers spent hours searching a lake near the san bernardino shooting scene yesterday. investigators say they're following a lead that indicates the shooters may have spent some time there. it is not clear at this point what divers are looking for, but officials say they're leaving no stone unturned. >> we think this search will last for days.
2:36 am
it's very possible. we would be remiss not to go in to this lake and do a -- conduct a thorough search for any evidentiary items that may come back. >> the mother of enrique marquez, the man who bought two of the guns that were subsequently used in the attack, told reporters yesterday her son is a good person. marquez has been cooperating with investigators. according to officials he went on a drinking binge following the massacre, and now he feels remorse. he says syed farook told him he was considering an attack in the los angeles area in 2012. marquez has not been charged with a crime. meanwhile, on capitol hill, fbi director james comey gave a classified briefing about the shooting to lawmakers yesterday. >> the director has emphasized that we're not aware of any other components to this particular plot. in other words, co-conspirators that may still be out there that pose a risk to the public. that's obviously a first and foremost priority for the
2:37 am
bureau. they're not aware of anything along those lines. >> also on thursday, the first funeral for one of the shooti i victims. hundreds of people including several law enforcement officers remembered 27-year-old yvette velasco. while congressional democrats continue calling for a fix to the so-called watch list loophole, without much success, connecticut's governor took matters into his own hands yesterday. dannel malloy announced he was signing an executive order banning people on federal terrorism watch lists from buying firearms in his state. >> like all americans, i've been horrified by the recent terrorist attack in california, and paris. this should be a wake-up call for all of us. this is a moment to seize, here in america. and today i'm here to say that connecticut, we are seizing this moment. if you cannot fly, due to being on a government watch list, you should not be able to purchase a firearm while on that watch list as well.
2:38 am
this is basic common sense, the american people get it. >> malloy says the order will go into effect once the white house, who he has been working with on this policy, grants the state access to some of the government's watch lists. the first canadian government plane carrying syrian refugees arrived in toronto. prime minister justin trudeau greeted refugees with warm coats last night as they arrived at pearson international airport. canadian well-wishers came with signs welcoming 163 people into the country. the prime minister plans to resettle 25,000 syrian refugees by the end of february. and a former oklahoma city police officer is facing more than 260 years in prison. last night a jury found former officer daniel holtzclaw guilty on 18 rape and sexual assault charges. prosecutors say holtzclaw, who openly sobbed as the verdict was read, worked the night shift and targeted black women with previous arrests, forcing them to perform sexual acts after
2:39 am
searching them for drugs. most did not dare report what happened to them. one woman accused holtzclaw of driving her to a field, raping her in the back seat of his squad car, then leaving her behind. she testified, quote, there was nothing i could do. he was a police officer, and i was a woman. another woman testified she didn't think anyone would believe her because she was, quote, a black female. holtzclaw was finally arrested last june one day after a 57-year-old day care worker sold the sex crimes division that he had molested her during a troughic stop. he will be back in court in january for sentencing. cadets at the historic citadel military academy in charleston, south carolina, have been suspended after a photo emerged of them dressed in white hoods. the photo was posted online according to school officials, showing upper class cadet in front of seven younger students. the school's president wrote in a statement that first reports indicated they were singing christmas carols as part of a ghost of christmas past skit but
2:40 am
he also said the images are not consistent with the school's core values of honor, duty and respect. there was a mandatory schoolwide meeting just before noon. the charleston community has been tested by other high profile cases this year you may recall from the officer involved shooting death of walter scott to the massacre that left nine african-american parishioners dead at mother emanuel church. all right. we want to go to chicago now, where calls for mayor rahm emanuel's resignation are intensifying. [ chanting ] these medical students take part in one of several demonstrations across chicago yesterday. criticized the mayor's handling of the laquan mcdonald police shooting, and demanded that he resign. the wheels are also moving in springfield to force him out. activists are trying to build support for a bill that would allow a recall election. if passed by the legislature and signed by the governor the bill would then need the signatures of at least 85,000 chicago voters. plus the support of two city
2:41 am
aldermen. yesterday activists with the coalition for a new chicago urged passage of the bill, and pledged to bring, quote, a million signatures to springfield. >> we're going to get this done now, someone said to me, well you think there are any city councilmen that will? i think so. and if there aren't we will develop city councilmen. matter of fact, i will work a miracle, and give birth to two city councilmen to get rahm out of office. >> the mayor's office accuses his critics of playing politics while he's focused on the people of his city, and police accountability. let's turn to business now, where crude oil is once again dipping near seven-year lows. prices settled under $37 a barrel yesterday for the first time since the recession. cnbc's jeff cut more joins us live from london. jeff, are we anywhere near the bottom here? >> it doesn't look like it, shiba. and i can tell you that within the last hour or so, we've seen that oil price down another percent or so.
2:42 am
so we are $36 and change here for a barrel of the black stuff. and the reason is, the iea which advises developed countries on their demand in the oil space has come out and said it sees no change in the falling price for oil in 2016. in fact, the market will continue to be oversupplied by opec members, and non-opec members, and demand is just not strong enough to mop up that additional oil. so the message within the last hour or so, we will continue to see weakness in 2016, and the oil price will continue to fall. goldmans have even talked about $20 a barrel here. so i guess bad news for the oil companies, but, hey, on the bright side, american motorists might be a little happier in 2016. back to you. >> might? i would say definitely, jeff. thank you. jeff cutmore live from london. okay. still ahead here on "way too early," army sergeant bowe bergdahl in his own words for the first time.

the popular podcast serial launched its second season yesterday turning the spotlight on u.s. army sergeant bowe bergdahl and why he left his post in afghanistan more than six years ago. bergdahl was held captive by the taliban for five years before being freed in a prisoner swap. the podcast features his firsthand account of walking off his remote army post back in 2009. bergdahl insists he wanted to warn commanders about leadership, and security problems within his platoon. >> basically what i decided to do, the first plan was go from point "a" to point "b."
