the fringe in this case was too much for that one university in florida. it's not apparently too much, though, for the guy next in line to be the republican nominee for president. to be the republican nominee for president. "first look" is up next. it is friday, december 18th. right now on "first look," the biggest movie of all time now belongs to the masses, "star wars: the force awakens" is finally unleashed. two weeks after the san bernardino terror attacks, federal prosecutors have filed charges against this man, a friend of one of the attackers. he is out of jail on $5 million bond, but wait until you hear the details surrounding charges against this vilified wall street ceo. plus a hustling lebron and courtside seats make for a dangerous combination. the nation's most famous theme parks take security to new levels. and it's official, mother teresa is a saint. rehberg rehberger. federal prosecutors have filed the first criminal charges stemming from the mass shooting in san bernardino. enrique marquez is a friend and former neighbor of the attackers who bought the assault weapons used in the massacre. he made his first appearance in federal court last night. nbc justice correspondent pete williams has details. >> reporter: two weeks after the shooting attack that left 14 dead and injured 22, federal prosecutors filed charges against 24-year-old enrique marquez, a friend and former next door neighbor of one of the attackers, syed farook. prosecutors say in late 2011 the two men plotted to attack riverside community college where both had been students with pipe bombs and guns. the fbi says they also talked about throwing pipe bombs to stop traffic on a crowded section of a state highway during rush hour then to shoot at people stuck in their cars. marquez is also charged with violating firearms laws when he bought the two assault rifles in 2011 and 2012 that ended up

being used in the san bernardino shooting. under federal law it's illegal for someone to buy a gun knowing the purchase is being made for someone else. the gun store form even warns you cannot acquire a firearm for another person. but charges filed say marquez and farook continued to plan for terror attacks by going to firing ranges but the two stopped plotting to the in late 2012 after some unrelated terror arrests in southern california. and there's nothing to indicate that marquez knew about the plans for the shooting in san bernardino earlier this month. he's also charged with defra defrauding the government with a sham marriage. officials say share ook's brother, also called syed, is married to a ukrainian woman whose sister is married to marquez. fbi agents questioned marquez for at least a week after the shooting. they say he answered questions voluntarily and did not request a lawyer. president obama was briefed on the national threat picture at the counterterrorism center, and said there are no known threats of attacks. he urged people to get on with the holidays.

>> we cannot give into fear or change how we live our lives because that's what terrorists want. that's the only leverage that they have. >> reporter: earlier this week, the bodies of syed farook and his wife tashfeen malik who were killed in a police shoot-out were buried in the muslim tradition at an undisclosed cemetery miles from san bernardino. last night marquez did not enter a plea. he'll be back in court monday for a bail and detention hearing. president obama will visit san bernardino to meet with victims' families later on today. meanwhile a federal grand jury has indicted a 22-year-old bay area web developer on one count of attempting to provide a material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization. prosecutors say he attempted to travel to turkey to help al nusra front terror group before authorities stopped him at an airport. according to an affidavit released by the fbi, he had a number of phone conversations with associates, expressing his

desire to die with the anf, his lawyers say he is innocent. he has been called the most hated man in america for exploding the price of a potentially life-saving drug. infamous pharmaceutical ceo martin shkreli could face 20 years in prison. this morning he's out on $5 million bond. nbc's stephanie gosk reports. >> reporter: just before his arrest, 32-year-old martin shkreli broadcast live for three hours on youtube, playing chess, the guitar, and surfing ok cupid. hours later the fbi would be at his door. >> all the way over. >> reporter: the pharmaceutical exec dubbed by some the most hated man in america for wildly inflating the price of a life-saving drug now stands accused of a laundry list of securities fraud charges. >> these charges in today's indictment highlight the brazenness, and the breadth of shkreli's schemes and the outrageous web of lies and

deceit. >> reporter: the charges have nothing to do with shkreli's decision in september to hike the price of daraprim 5,000% from $13.50 a pill to $750. at the time he argued the price increase would fund important research and development. >> and doctors and patient groups saying they can't access this drug. are you going to change the price? >> no. >> reporter: later his company said some hospitals and patients would be eligible for discounts. now shkreli is accused of creating an elaborate ponzi scheme. among other things stealing more than $11 million from his former pharmaceutical company to pay off investors in another one of his businesses, a failed hedge fund. shkreli is already so widely despi despised, he actually united hillary clinton and donald trump in a common cause. >> that guy is nothing. he is zero. he's nothing. and he ought to be ashamed of himself. >> i am announcing a detailed plan to crack down on these abuses. >> reporter: shkreli is the son of eastern european immigrants raised in brooklyn. his parents worked as janitors.

he recently spent $2 million for the only copy of a hip-hop album and told the magazine, i'm the most successful albanian to ever walk the face of this earth. now, he's well on his way to becoming the most infamous, as well. stephanie gosk, nbc news, new york. a representative released a statement saying shkreli is confident he'll be cleared of all charges and a few hours ago he tweeted, glad to be home. thanks for the support. with christmas a week from today and mass shootings on the minds of so many americans, major theme parks in orlando are tightening security. nbc's kerry sanders reports. >> reporter: they're among the most popular destinations in the u.s. but now a trip to any of the country's major theme parks can mean a new kind of ride, through a security check point. at disneyworld, seaworld, universal and other parks, walking through metal detectors and wand detectors became the most visible part of the theme park's security.

>> they're considered soft targets because they're generally considered to be low security. but high density of people. >> reporter: there are more than 400 amusement parks across the u.s. the magic kingdom alone attracted more than 19 million visitors last year. this time of year, those in florida and california are most active. and holiday school breaks bump up attendance. disney says it's implementing additional security measures as appropriate. universal studios, a division of nbc universal promises we are able to help guests move swiftly through this process. in addition to added security, disney parks have banned the sale of toy guns, including the popular buzz light-year pistol, and they've banned character costumes for guests 14 years and older. theme park goers in orlando seem to be taking it all in stride. >> if it means a couple extra minutes for my child's safety, so be it. >> reporter: security experts say like tsa at the airport this new security will eventually

seem routine. kerry sanders, nbc news orlando. democratic presidential candidates are gearing up for saturday's debate in new hampshire. ahead of the debate, hillary clinton has penned an op-ed in the new hampshire union leader laying out a three-part plan to fight and defeat isis, which includes shutting down online jihadist recruitment while empowering muslim american communities. meanwhile, republican candidates ted cruz and marco rubio are locked in a battle on immigration policy. a fight that could benefit front-runner donald trump. but as nbc's hallie jackson reports, second place ted cruz is facing fresh competition. >> reporter: he's playing defense after attacks from marco rubio over what to do with the estimated 11 million people living here illegally. rubio wants to eventually make some of them citizens. cruz does not. and says he doesn't support any kind of legal status. that's more politically palatable to conservative primary voters. but now he's having to explain why he said this, proposing an

amendment back in 2013. >> they would still be eligible for legal status. >> sounded like he wanted the bill to pass. >> of course i wanted the bill to pass -- my amendment to pass. >> you said the bill. >> what my amendment did is take citizenship off the table. >> reporter: cruz says is he was trying to make a political point to prove the bill's spoefters wouldn't budge. >> it lay naked the partisanship, the hypocrisy and the lies behind the proponents of the rubio/schumer amnesty plan. >> reporter: it's rubio who should be on the ropes for his support of that comprehensive immigration reform bill, unpopular with most republicans. instead, rubio's pouncing. trying to blur the lines. >> he's going to have a hard time because he's not told the truth about his position in the past on legalization. >> reporter: still the bottom line? a rubio versus cruz immigration battle is a fight that leaves the front-runner untouched on top. >> that was nbc's hallie jackson reporting. later today, president obama will hold his annual year-end press conference where he is

expected to praise this year's accomplishments while setting the stage for 2016. it is the day millions of die-hard "star wars" fans have been waiting for. "star wars: the force awakens" began opening in thousands of theaters last night. reports say it's headed for a record shattering $55 million-plus in thursday's sales alone. fans were lined up for hours to catch the first screenings, and many dressed the part in l.a. and australian couple got married as they waited in line. even mark zuckerberg's newborn daughter got in on the action. the facebook founder posted this photo saying quote, the force is strong with this one. i'll say. meanwhile, in an interview with buzzfeed uk, han solo actor harrison ford made a plea for people to stop posting spoilers. >> stop that. don't do that. please don't do that. don't do that. >> and mark hamill who plays luke skywalker tweeted loose

lips sink starships. a scary moment last night in a cavs-thunder game. late in the fourth quarter of a tight one, lebron james dove for a loose ball going out of bounds and landed an a woman in the front row who happens to be ellie day, the wife of jason day, who is the second ranked golfer in the world. the cavs actually welcomed the couple before the game on twitter. play was stopped and she was taken out of the arena on a stretcher with her head and neck immobilized in a brace. jason day accompanied his wife as she was taken out. according to tnt's craig seger she was alert and communicating with medical personnel at the time. she is reportedly being held at a hospital overnight for observation but is doing fine. after the game lebron tweeted an apology saying i hope you're doing okay, i hope you guys come back another game soon. the cavs would go on to win a thriller 104-100. lebron finished with 33 points. let's get down to business now with cnbc's landen dowdy. good morning, landon. >> hey milissa, good friday

welcome back, everyone. good morning. it looks like that record warm weather that we've seen east of the rockies will continue next week in time for christmas. but right now we're tracking a powerful storm across the northwest. very heavy rain along the coast and heavy mountain snows as you head to those higher elevations. look at the jet stream for next week, again record highs east of the rockies. cool out west and some severe weather possible across the south. as you're heading out there today, drying out in the northeast. temperatures finally cooling off, 20s in minneapolis. we haven't seen cold like this yet. the coldest weather of the season so far. lake-effect snow later on tonight into tomorrow as we head to the northeast. a blustery day for saturday and yet another storm moves into the pacific northwest as we head into saturday night and sunday a very stormy pattern there, milissa. typical of el nino and that will continue throughout the weekend. >> all right. thank you so much. breaking overnight from the vatican in rome. mother teresa will be made a saint by the roman catholic church. the nobel laureate who died in

1997 and dedicated her whole life to helping the poorest of the poor is expected to be canonized in september. the u.s. marshals have joined the hunt for ethan couch. he is the texas teen who was sentenced in 2013 to ten years' probation after he drove a pickup truck while drunk into a crowd, killing four people. as you may remember, his lawyers claimed he suffered from affluenza, being too rich to know right from wrong. the 18-year-old and his mother have not been seen since he missed a probation appointment last week. some fear they may have fled the country. couch's name has been added to a national fugitive database. the united nations took an historic step to fight isis on thursday. the u.n. security council unanimously passed a u.s./russian-led resolution to track and cut off isis money and punish those who profit from it. isis collects $1.2 billion in annual income from oil, stolen antiquities and taxes. and just in time for the

holidays, u.s. air force drone pilots are getting six-figure bonuses in order to bolster their drone fleet. pilots with six years experience will receive $125,000 bonuses, getting $25,000 annually for five years. what can we expect at tomorrow's democratic presidential debate? we'll tell you what to watch for.

bernie sanders' campaign of improperly accessing confidential voter information gathered by the clinton campaign, a claim acknowledged by sanders' campaign manager. the campaign says a low-level staffer viewed the information after a software glitch allowed access. the dnc is temporarily blocked the sanders campaign from a strategic voter information. meanwhile ahead of saturday's democratic debate the sanders campaign announces it has received more than 2 million donations, the majority of which are small. democratic rival hillary clinton, on the other hand, has received about 600,000 donations, but much larger by comparison. the sanders campaign says it raised $2.4 million just since monday and $1.1 million on wednesday alone, right after the republican debate. senior white house officials say the obama administration is working on a, quote, nontraditional state of the union address that will focus more on big picture issues delivered on the big stage instead of the normal legislative to-do list. mr. politico mike huckabee

real fallout for the sanders campaign improperly accessing clinton voter data? >> the bottom line is that the senator sanders campaign is saying that they did nothing wrong, in that they immediately got rid of this information. they didn't access it, didn't print it. their distancing themselves heavily from this. they're blaming the dnc, which, of course, escaped a lot of questions lately about just organizing the debates in general, and when they're scheduling them. but this is not a good look for bernie sanders at all. particularly, yeah, he's doing well in new hampshire. but you know, how is he going to be able to compete on super tuesday? the self-described socialist facing a lot of questions heading into tomorrow night's debate. >> on the heels of the gop debate in las vegas, the focus on fighting isis, hillary clinton lays out her own plan in an op-ed this morning. will this be the dominating theme? >> i think it will be. but again i'm not sure that she's going to be facing many tough questions from her colleagues. she is still on the left, i think that she clearly is still the front-runner. where this is really going to

come ahead, of course, is the general election match-up. i think that all of the republicans are positioning themselves to be the more clear alternative to former secretary clinton, and how she is proposing to combat isis. of course, we're hearing a lot from conservatives like senator ted cruz, as well as the billionaire celebrity donald trump, that they would -- they say toughen the border control security. and i think that that contrast is what the clinton campaign is going to continue to try to drive home in this debate. >> do you think mrs. clinton will continue to hammer away at both donald trump and ted cruz? >> you know, milissa, that's a great question. and i think what she's going to try to do is lump all of the republicans with donald trump. but it's going to be really interesting, because you have a lot of republicans who are running who are also trying to distance themselves from donald trump. so you know, it will be interesting to see, in the next couple of weeks, just how

successful she is able to do that. but i got to be honest, she's going to be facing a lot of attacks with the obama administration for not doing enough to combat isis. which national security clearly very much on the minds of a lot of americans, particularly post-paris heading into this holiday -- now in this holiday season. >> president obama's holding his year-end press conference today. what do you think he's going to focus on? >> national security. national security. national security. again, i mean, if you're just traveling around the country, talking to voters, it is really the number one issue on the mind. there's a lot of fear on a lot of the voters' minds post-paris, post-san bernardino. and he's got to come out and really set the tone that he has a plan to keep americans safe against isis. >> kevin cirilli, thank you so much. >> thank you. >> i'm milissa rehberger, this is "first look" on msnbc. 2:30 out west, and this is "way too early." ♪ good morning. it's friday december 18th, i'm jonathan capehart. we start with breaking news this morning. pope francis has cleared the way for mother teresa to become a saint. the pontiff marked his 79th birthday yesterday by approving a decree that the nunn who had performed a second miracle which full sainthood requires. no official date has been set yet for the canonization but the italian media speculate the ceremony will occur the first week of next september, to coincide with the anniversary of her death. mother teresa, a nobel peace prize winner, died in 1997, at age 87. the man who purchased the assault rifles laterd
