to do with no fear of legal consequences. >> reporter: senator bernie sanders says he can be tough on gun manufacturers. >> when gun manufacturers, for example, are selling guns into an area and know that those guns are going into the hands of criminals, absolutely, those gun manufacturers should be held accountable. >> reporter: a new nbc news/"wall street journal"/marist poll shows iowa closer than ever. within a margin clinton slightly leads americans. the same with republicans. trump took aim at cruz's ability to be president because he was born in canada. >> has to solve this problem because the democrats will sue him if he's the nominee. >> reporter: cruz believes the matter is settled. and senator ted cruz was born to an american mother in canada and he believes that is the reason he's constitutionally eligible to be president.

dara? >> edward lawrence, busy week ahead, thank you so much. mexico has formally begun the process of extraditing el chapo to the u.s. gabe gutierrez explains. >> reporter: mexican law enforcement official tells nbc news mexican authorities want to speak with sean penn and mexican soap opera star kate del castillo about their secret trip. it's believed to be his first interview in decades, the article published by "rolling stone" magazine overnight. guzman admitted drugs destroy but said unfortunately where he grew up there was no other way to survive. asked if he was prone to violence, guzman said all he does is defend himself. guzman only agreed to take the questions penn writes after a previous seven-hour face-to-face

meeting days before a failed october raid. according to penn, this picture authenticates that meeting. in the rest of the interview conducted by blackberry messenger, penn quotes el chapo saying "i supply more heroin, methamphetami methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana than anybody else in the world." on friday the attorney said guzman's desire to make a movie about himself and interaction with producers and actors eventually led to his arrest. another mexican official confirms investigators were able to learn details of el chapo's whereabouts from intercepted phone calls from del castillo and penn. >> they want to identify as many people closely associated with el chapo as they can. >> reporter: a trusted source tells nbc news authorities were aware that penn and del castillo were in mexico to meet with guzman in october as law enforcement was closing in. plan to arrest was delayed to assure the two would not be

harmed. when the raid eventually took place el chap ono and his security team escaped. it wasn't until three months later, friday morning, that the mexican navy captured el chapo following a bloody shootout. this is the drainage tunnel where he tried to make a last ditch effort to escape. we reached out to penn and del castillo, neither commented. on social media many wanted them to face charges for not alerting authorities about their meeting with one of the most wanted criminals in the world. the stars of tv and film turned out for the 73rd annual gold en globes. ricky gervais kept everyone on their toes. we turn to jinah kim in beverly hills. >> "the revenant."

important. lot of people like last week in iowa saying i'm just tuning in now. i really wasn't going to pay attention six months out before i was going to vote and people say i'm still undecided but those debates will be important to me. i think what you're going to hear people say is start to go after who will be a successful candidate. iowa and new hampshire they have their favorites but they want someone who is going to twin. they don't want to vote for somebody who is not going to win. the first in the nation status is important to both states. >> you brought up a very important word, win, win. donald trump winning, winning, and here he is, spent all weekend attacking ted cruz about this whole birther thing and is this going to end? when is this going to stop? ted cruz isn't biting. >> donald trump will keep going after ted cruz until he does well in iowa because he cannot handle losing. part of his narrative is that he can win, that he can win and everyone else is a loser and's the winner. if he doesn't win in iowa, that challenges that narrative and i think that's why he's going after ted cruz so hard. ted cruz seems to have found the solution to donald trump

attacking you, which is to just ignore him. >> ignore it. he's attacking the nfl saying football is soft, taking hits. what is he going to attack next? >> i think we have to wait and see, but donald trump can almost attack anything and it works for his voters. they say he's strong and outspoken, he's bold. i like that. that's what his voters tell me time and time again. >> it will be interesting to see what happens. i want to get your spot on this, the nbc/"wall street journal"/marist poll says bernie sanders is outperforming clinton, trump and cruz in the general election matchups. what do you think about this? >> i see bernie sanders having a lot of momentum in the early states but he needs to get the votes. xolg say one thing or say something else but he has to put his votes where his poll numbers are, and i think we'll see iowa and new hampshire coming up real fast. >> it's interesting, they have him winning against not only the democratic but also the republican, so do you think this could possibly play out? >> bernie sanders chairs some of
