heat in the early voting states of iowa and new hampshire. our new nbc news/marist/"wall street journal" poll finds hillary clinton leading bernie sanders by three points in iowa, 48% to 45%, inside the margin of error. in new hampshire it is sanders on top, 50% to 46%. there it goes, that's within the poll's margin of error but a new fox news poll out of the granite state has sanders with a wider lead, in this poll he's ahead of clinton by 13 points in new hampshire. and in our new nbc news polls, sanders performs better than clinton in hypothetical general election matchups in the early states as well. in iowa clinton leads trrp trmp by eight points but sanders leads him by 13. in new hampshire clinton is ahead of trump which just one point but sanders tops him by 19. apparently emboldened by the numbers and others like them, sanders had this to say about his electability yesterday.
2:35 am
>> for a start i would urge those voters, voters all over this country to talk a look at recent polls in which bernie sanders is matched with republican candidates trump on down. hillary clinton is matched with republican candidates. so if people are concerned about electability, and democrats should be very concerned, because we certainly do not want to see some right wing extremist in the white house, i think bernie sanders is the candidate. >> in an interview yesterday clinton brushed off those new numbers saying "polls go up and they go down" then she went on to repeat an attack on senator sanders over his record on guns. here's what clinton had to say about her opponent's 2005 vote on a bill that gave gun manufacturers immunity from prosecution when their products are used to commit a crime followed by sanders' response. >> you know, president obama and i and senator sanders were all in the senate at the same time. two of us voted against what the
