"first look" is up next. it's tuesday, january isth. right now on "first look," change is in the wind as president obama lays out his view of america heading in his final state of the union address. >> alabama back on top! of the college football world. national champions for the fourth time in seven years but clemson put up one heck of a fight. inside the attempt to flush out the world's most infamous drug lord. and new details surrounding the infamous meeting with actor sean penn. the political barb flies as the political frontrunners hit the entertainment shows.

and arctic air across the central and eastern u.s. rupert murdoch with hall. and "first look" starts right now. good morning i'm dara brown. we begin with breaking news out of turkey. at least ten people are dead and more than 15 wounded following an explosion near a popular tourist site in istanbul, turkey. the cause of the explosion is not clear although some police officers were overheard saying they thought it was a suicide blast. turkey has been dealing with a set of isis-linked extremists. a double suicide bombing that killed more than 100 people in the turkish capital in october was blamed on isis. turkish officials said in december they thwarted an isis attack for new year's eve celebrations. some are calling it one of the best national championship games ever. the undefeated number one clemson tigers facing off against number two, alabama crimson tide. let's jump right in. just before halftime the game, clemson with the first down, but the clock did not stop.

clemson coach made sure the refs knew it. instead of being able to try and gain a few more yards they settle for a 44-yard field goal which comes up short. now to the fourth all tied up at 24 and alabama with a game-changer. >> and now, a broadside kick. it is caught. alabama's got the ball back. >> two plays later, quarterback jay coker finds a wide open o.j. howard for the touchdown and the lead. and later in the fourth after a clemson field goal cut the lead to four, alabama's kenyan grace set for the kickoff. >> grace can fly. he will not be caught! that gave the crimson tide an 11 point lead which was too much for the tigers to overcome. alabama beat clemson 45-40. it's alabama's fourth national championship in seven seasons. and the fifth for head coach

nick saban. only legendary coach bear bryant has more with six. the win is also saban's 100th as alabama head coach. after the game he spoke about what it meant. >> there weren't very many people early in the season that thought this team could do it. and this team made a tmendous commitment to one another, and did it together, and i've never been prouder of a group of young guys than i am, and that's why i'm so happy for these players. >> and now to tonight's main event. president obama's final state of the union address. the white house says it will be nontraditional with that message to the nation, and with an optimistic tone nbc's tracie potts is live in washington, d.c. for us this morning. tracy, any specific word on what we're expected to hear f >> a white house spokesperson has said he's going to talk about a few things he thinks congress may be able to get done this year. but the focus will be.

marco rubio, rand paul and bernie sanders are expected to attend. and in the first lady's box tonight, an empty chair representing the victims of gun violence. dara? >> tracie, thank you so much. msnbc is the place to watch the state of the union address. our special coverage led by chris matthews and rachel maddow begins tonight at 8:00 p.m. eastern. turning now to the race for president. the battle for the democratic nomination isn't a sure thing for hillary clinton as bernie sanders is putting up a fight. that top pair came together last night for the brown and black iowa forum on fusion. backed by strong polling numbers out of iowa and new hampshire, sanders lashed out. >> do you notice lately she's been getting more aggressive with you? >> yes. why is that? >> i don't know. >> you tell me. >> it could be that the inevitable candidate for the democratic nomination may not be

so inevitable today. >> clinton answered with digs of her own questioning the senator's electability and his perceived weak stance on gun control. but she also had a bigger fish to fry, the republican front-runner. >> anybody can win. i mean, this is -- who would have thought donald trump would be leading in national polls. i mean for those of you ever thought of running for president, take heart. >> well, her target there, donald trump was on "the tonight show" last night. and if he's telling the truth, we ain't seen nothing yet. >> the newest poll came out today where i'm beating her easily and substantially, and i'm winning against hillary one-on-one. so, you know, look -- and i haven't even started on her yet. although last week i did a little bit. but we haven't even started. >> trump has seen to be in a good mood. a new poll has him dominating in new hampshire. and another has him retaking the lead from ted cruz in iowa. farther down in those polls,

carly fiorina and rand paul, so low, in fact, that they've both been relegated to the kid's table for the next gop debate. but senator paul says he's not going. >> i won't participate in anything that's not first tier. because we have a first tier campaign. >> and you notified fox of that? >> we've let them know that. >> that debate will be this thursday night. mexican authorities have released new video of the raid and capture of drug kingpin joaquin el chapo guzman. the mexican network has obtained these mug shot pictures of el chapo although they've not been verified by nbc news and there are new details in the strange sub plot featuring an oscar winning actor. nbc's gabe gutierrez reports. >> reporter: dramatic video just released by the mexican government showing friday's raid of joaquin "el chapo" guzman's safe house in los noches. mexican marines closing in on the most wanted drug lord in the world as el chapo makes one last

ditch effort to escape from the house with a top lieutenant through an underground tunnel. they emerged from this sewer line about a half mile away and they stole a car and that driver called it in and authorities were able to track him down. after his dramatic escape from a maximum security prison last july, guzman was on the run. but in early october took a secret meeting in mexico with oscar-winning actor sean penn, brokered by soap opera star kate del castillo who once played a drug lord on mexican tv. castillo tweeted about guzman and rolling stone said he reached out to her to discuss the idea about making a movie about his life. she connected with penn and and together they travelled to mexico to meet with guzman. under surveillance by mexican authorities. penn would arrange this video interview and write an article for rolling stone describing the process as a clandestine horror show, burner phones, anonymous

e-mails and encrypted messages. it would be three months before authorities would track guzman to los noechs. penn has ventured into journalism before filing stories about raul castro in cuba and hugo chavez in venezuela. if guzman is extradited, legal experts say penn's decisions could come back to haunt pym. >> it's not here sean penn violated any american laws. it may not have been particularly ethical but it wasn't necessarily illegal. >> penn told the associated press he had nothing to hide. >> nbc's gabe gutierrez reporting. next can authorities have started the extradition process to bring guzman to the u.s. meanwhile u.s. law enforcement authorities say penn had nothing to do with the final capture of el chapo. let's get down to business with cnbc's landon dowdy. good morning. >> dara, good morning to you. you're never too old to find love. rupert murdoch engaged to one time supermodel and mick

wintertime, lake-effect snow caused near whiteout conditions. this is what buffalo should look like in the middle of winter. more expected throughout the upcoming week. the plows had difficulty keeping the highways cleared because the snow was coming down so fast and furious. take a look at this car. any guess what type of car that is? that's frozen solid off lake erie. the waves were washing up onto the car and surprising it with a frozen mist. look at the building side, too. firefighters facing subzero temperatures battling a fire. the weather froze the water instantly leaving behind this eerily ice covered room. we are tracking snow, we've had very little in the way of snow tracking this winter. cleveland, you've got about a fluffy inch on the ground in a few spots and that's going to continue throughout the morning. this is going to move to the east as we go throughout the day. even some of the cities that haven't seen any snow this winter like philadelphia and d.c. could possibly see a little burst of snow. no accumulations, though.

this is what we call a clipper low. alberta clipper, usually they're very little moisture with them. and a lot of cold air behind them. but this storm's going to redevelop in the gulf of maine. we're going to get a lot of snow in maine, possibly up to a foot of snow. the full-fledged snowstorm for you tonight, tomorrow morning ponly school cancellations and also off the lakes, a lot of another -- a lot of another batch of very heavy snow. that cold air right now is from fargo to sioux falls and minneapolis and international falls. there are the windchills. negative 30 right now in fargo. you know, those kids are going outside and getting ready for school and that's not fun. >> that is so wrong. >> negative 30 is dangerous. >> not good at all, bill, thank you so much. the state of unions that represent teachers, nurses, and others hangs in the balance after the supreme court heard a pivotal case yesterday. judging from the justice's comments as reported by pete williams it appears the court may decide that non-union workers will not have to pay

dues to the unions. roughly half of the u.s. states require non-members to pay dues to cover the cost of contract negotiations. one teacher feels it violates her free speech. because she disagrees with many of the union's positions. >> we should be able to decide whether what the union is doing is good for us and good for our workplace and good for our students. >> and the residents of whitesboro new york voted on a controversial village seal yesterday. the seal appears to show a white settler choking a nature of american and has been called offensive. the website says the emblem dates back to the early 1900s. a majority of residents were in favor of keeping the image despite the backlash. check out this video of a vehicle in michigan ramming into a police car while a man was on the hood. the man in the car -- on the car was reportedly fighting with his brother who was inside driving. both brothers were arrested for domestic disturbance. stay there. less serious topic, her recent appearance on "saturday night live." >> you get there, and it really is live tv, as you know, and all of a sudden, you know, they're running in and saying well we're going to do this. we're going to change that. and the first thing they wanted to do, they wanted to end the skit, as it eventually does, with me singing. and i said, you really don't want to hear me sing. oh, yes, we do, they said. so we go out to rehearse it and we get to the point where i sing and i sing and the producers look at me and say, no, we don't want to hear you sing. >> and just announced the brady campaign to prevent gun violence will endorse hillary clinton for president. it's her second key gun control endorsement after gabriel giffords backed her this week. one person in the crowd for tonight's address, kentucky clerk kim davis who was jailed for refusing to hand out licenses to same-sex couples. it was reportedly arranged by the family research council.

and some interesting factoids to impress your friends. historically less than half of actions proposed in the address are successfully enacted by congress during the legislative session. and the most discussed topic on facebook leading up to the state of the union has been terrorism. followed by obamacare, and immigration. for the record, for most words used in a state of the union, that's held by jimmy carter who beat second place william howard taft by a mile. and stephen colbert has an idea of what the white house is calling a nontraditional speech. >> i'm not sure what that is but i assume it means it's going to be barefoot on the beach. everyone's in like cream linen, rolled cuffs, and instead of maybe state of the union cake, maybe cup cakes. that's fun. and congress is writing its own vows. we promise not to do anything you propose forever and ever and ever and ever. >> and that is your morning dish

of "scrambled politics." i'm joined nowpy political analyst and best-selling author ellis henican. >> good morning. >> a great way to start off with this. >> i think they promise that every year by the way, to do absolutely nothing at all >> a question for you. they're sing it's nontraditional. what are we to expect nontraditional. what's that mean? >> is optimism infectious? that's basically the question tonight. the president wants to be above the fray. the candidates out on the race to replace him. just doom and gloom and the whole world is going to hell. and if he wants to step forward in his final year and say, you know what? we're bigger than that. we're better than that, here are some general big themes about the kind of stuff that we ought to be aspiring to over the next 12 months. >> okay, let's talk about those themes. is the president going to look back at his years in office? or is he going to look forward and possibly set the agenda for the incoming president? >> a little bit of both. there's a little bit of a victory lap. he wants to take credit for a couple things that have been

accomplished. this trade deal. the fact that the economy is coming back, unemployment is down. you'll hear mentions of that kind of stuff. but this isn't going to be a to-do list. over the next month i want this policy and that policy. because you know what? congress isn't going to give him any of that anyway. so, you know, why just come up with another list of things that a president talks about in a speech that never happened again. >> well we're going to move on to the caucuses now because they're going to kick off in three weeks and we have this latest poll showing in new hampshire that one in three voters is actually locked into a candidate. >> yes >> gut one in four are still very much up for grabs. could be good for swing votes. what's your take on this? >> well it's clearly good for the people who weren't in front, right? so if you're not donald trump in new hampshire, you'll like that. and if you're not ted cruz in iowa, you think that's possible. and there's a lot of history here. a lot of people have zoomed up, rick santorum went from 3% to 4% and won there previously. so there's a lot of hope for these guys. it ain't over yet. >> ellis henican i appreciate

as news of david bowie's death spread so did the worldwide tributes. fans left flowers at bowie's star on the hollywood walk of fame and the chamber of commerce laid a wrooes honoring the rock legend. london's british telecom tower scrolled bowie's name and spotify streams jumped 2700%. yesterday his final album topped

charts with three more of his albums in the top ten. a tribute concert planned to honor the singer before his death will be held on march 31st at carnegie hall. the roots, cyndi lauper and many more are slated to perform. and the cincinnati zoo named a baby penguin bowie after fans wreath in on social media the two shared a january birthday. guinness world records just released a stunning video of a record breaking light show in germany. ♪ the show is made up of 100 drones lighting up the sky to the tune of bait oafen's fifth symphony. it earned the spot for most unmanned aerial vehicles in the air at the same time. the team hopes it will demonstrate the immense capability of uavs and inspire others to push the limits of the industry. amazing. >> never seen anything like that. >> absolutely not. >> i could see that on fourth of july.
