good morning i'm gigi stone woods. did you win? there are three winning tickets for last night's historic $1.5 billion powerball jackpot. one winning ticket was sold at this 7-eleven in chino hills, california. where, as you can see, a huge crowd has already gathered. the other two were in tennessee and florida and for more let's go to nbc's morgan radford who is actually live in chino hills. morgan, i'm guessing it wasn't yours. >> it wasn't me, gigi. but i can tell you that inside this 7-eleven where the winning ticket was sold, the mood was absolutely electric. people were coming just to get an inside look at the store and a glimpse of the glory. we're talking $1.5 billion. that is the largest amount in all of powerball jackpot history. and it's going to be split now in three different ways. one right here with the winner in california. one also in tennessee. and one in florida. but now that these winners have been chosen, they're going to get to do the choosing now, gigi. they get to decide whether or not they want this in annual installments, or if they want

this in one lump sum. and for just $2 a ticket, the odds for them for these winners were 1 out of 292 million. try to wrap your head around that. now luckily there were also some smaller winners, if we can count small being in the millions. there were five $1 million tickets that were winners in michigan. there was also a $2 million ticket that won in iowa. so, lots of winners across the country tonight. we still do not know exactly who these winners were of the powerball jackpot. but we are keeping an ear out for that. >> all right, well if you see the winner tell them if they go for the lump sum to hire a very good accountant. thank you. >> absolutely. breaking news overnight. several explosions and gunfire near a popular shopping mall in the indonesian capital of jakarta. ge tails are sketchy. the blast happened near a starbucks and police say at least seven people have been killed. among them two foreigners. police are reporting four of the attackers were also shot dead. now other suspected militants have been arrested.

and the u.s. embassy issued an alert urging u.s. citizens to avoid this area. hours before the attack al qaeda leader zawahiri posted a message saying southeast asia is right for a jihadist revival. ahead of tonight's republican presidential debate it is increasingly evident that there's a growing rift within the party with the party even making preliminary plans for a brokered convention in case no candidate wins enough delegates to secure the nomination. and south carolina governor nikki haley, a rising republican, used her national platform during the formal republican response to the president's state of the union. haley lambasted some within her party, including presidential front-runner donald trump. nbc's hallie jackson has more. >> reporter: even when he's not supposed to be in the spotlight, donald trump still is. >> those angriest voices are not helpful. >> reporter: nikki haley's

and listen, the donald seems to be a little bit rattled. >> reporter: trump, keeping up his birther attacks on cruz with 15% of iowa republicans now saying it bothers them cruz was born in canada to an american mother. >> that's more than a technicality. that is a big, big factor. >> reporter: the rivals, now fighting for first in iowa. leaving little room for the establishment candidates. >> nbc's hallie jackson reporting. on the democratic side, things are getting more contentious, as well, with just days left before sunday's democratic debate airing here on nbc. hillary clinton and bernie sanders are intensifying their war of words. this is clinton's poll numbers continue to slip. nbc's kristen welker reports. >> reporter: hillary clinton and bernie sanders escalating their sniping clinton firing the first volley. he will meeting her toughest attacks on health care, and guns. >> senator sanders has been a pretty reliable vote for the gun lobby, and i have been standing against them for a long time.

>> reporter: on msnbc, sanders punched back. >> to say that i'm kind of a supporter of the nra is really a mean-spirited, and unfair and inaccurate statement. >> reporter: the ramped up rhetoric comes with the democrats now locked in an unexpected nail-biter. a new national poll showing clinton's once dominant lead tumbling. she still tops sanders, but only by seven points. 48-41%. a sharp decline from her 20-point lead last month on the "today" show clinton downplayed the numbers. >> no, i'm not nervous at all. i'm working hard and i intend to keep working as hard as i can. >> reporter: so why are more and more democrats feeling the bern? sanders, a self-described democratic socialist could be tapping into voters' desire for an anti-establishment candidate. that hunger particularly strong among younger voters under 45, who favor sanders nearly two to one. >> nbc's kristen welker, thank you. msnbc is the place for politics all night long.

let's call this one a major ice breaker. in buffalo, new york, that car that we showed you a couple days ago that became encased in ice. after being hit by the waves from lake erie this week it's now free. workers covered the car in ice melting cass yum. they were then able to pull it out with a tow truck leaving behind the encasement. look how thick that ice was. let's talk about alex. alex yesterday became a very rare january subtropical storm. our first named sis tell. the "a"-named storm of our hurricane season in 2016 that starts by the time we get in june. it's located well out here, far in the atlantic. it's not going to affect anyone. but it's just kind of that rare thing the water still just barely warm enough for this to be classified as a subtropical storm. we've had a couple of these in the past. this is the first one since 1978

to form in january and the fourth recorded january storm. the second earliest a-named storm. there was one back in 1938 that became a hurricane. and something like this happens out of hurricane season about once every ten years. so it's not a complete hairty. as far as our weather in the lower 48, still cold in many spots. the thing to watch is this rainstorm now starting in the gulf of mexico. not so much today southern portions of coastal louisiana will get a little bit. also northern portions of florida. as we go throughout friday soaking rains go through alabama, mississippi, southern half of georgia and then florida could deal with some pretty strong thunderstorms friday afternoon. friday night to saturday morning mid-atlantic but then it's trending offshore so we could get a pretty decent forecast as we go towards saturday in new england. it was looking very rainy. now it's not looking too bad. >> okay el nino giving us storms in january is not good. but i will take that, bill thank you. massive inferno at an oklahoma oil well that destroyed 22 oil tankers at a continental resources site leaving behind more than $20 million worth of

sudden. what are you hearing? >> i think that's true. it's because ted cruz is finally getting this very intense look by the media. he was ignored for much of 2015. and finally as people are turning in to his record they know that there's more things to look at. you talked about that $500,000 loan that he didn't disclose. this is going to be a tough month for ted cruz, because he is in the best position in iowa, and this is when all those attacks start raining down on him. >> all right we'll find out more tonight. on the democratic side bernie sanders, of course, edging closer to clinton in iowa. how much should her campaign be sweating right now? >> well, they should be worried about losing iowa and new hampshire. and of course iowa is the state where insurgents can always break out. it's the first one. it's where barack obama won in 2008. and even though bernie sanders is doing better in the polls in new hampshire, the fact that he's on the rise in iowa should be really concerning to her. now obviously is it going to stop her from winning the nomination? no. but she may very well lose those first two states, and that could
