crowds that we get. that we're kicking ass together. we're all kicking ass. all kicking ass. >> the republican front-runner apparently doing more than taking names. we'll have the latest from battle ground, florida. plus clinton versus sanders gets even hotter. it's 5:30 on the east coast, 2:30 out west, this is "way too early." good morning, it's thursday january the 14th, i'm louis burgdorf. we begin with breaking news out of jakarta where police say at least seven people were killed when militants set off a series of explosions and waged gun battles with police in the commercial heart of the indonesian capital this morning. at least four of the alleged attackers were among the dead
2:31 am
according to police and wire reports. though no one has yet claimed responsibility authorities say the attackers imitated the paris terror attacks and are most likely linked to an isis group. one of the explosions took place just yards from a starbucks. the company says all of its stores in the city will close out of an abundance of caution. and with us now by phone from jakarta and southeast asia bureau chief from reuters john chalmers. john, police have raised the possibility that isis may have been involved in this attack. what's the latest this morning? >> well, that's right. they're investigating the possibility that islamic state was behind this unprecedented attack in indonesia. in the past we've seen attacks in indonesia such as in bali and indeed in jakarta which have been by what we think of as home grown militants and they've been of a very different nature. the athak that we saw today had echoes of mumbai, had echoes of what we saw in paris in
2:32 am
november, with a coordinated team of militants all working in tandem at the same time. so there are suspicions that because of the nature of it being so very different, there is the possibility here that we're seeing something that comes from an outside force, and islamic state is obviously, finger of suspicion points in that direction. >> john chalmers thanks so much. also this morning, ten american sailors who were detained by iran have been released but the video of the sailors in iranian custody is raising questions. this footage aired on iranian state television. the sailors are seen on their knees, hands clasped behind their heads, on the deck of their own u.s. navy vessel. iranian state tv also broadcast this. >> it was a mistake that was our fault and we apologize for our mistake. the iranian behavior was fantastic while we were here. we thank you very much for your hospitality, and your assistance. we had no problems, sir.
2:33 am
>> at this point, we do not know if the sailor who apologized was under duress, nor do we know for what he was apologizing. or whether the video was released by the iranians for propaganda. u.s. central command has released a statement saying the video appears to be authentic but we cannot speak to the conditions of the situation or what the crew was experiencing at the time. now house minority leader nancy pelosi said yesterday that the sailors' quick release was in part due to the iran nuclear deal. >> this is proof that building a diplomatic relationship with iran, at least in terms of the nuclear treaty, has served us well in resolving this so quickly. >> following the sailors' release, several gop candidates were quick to criticize the obama administration, and the iran nuclear deal. >> it was striking. he stood up there and talked about how proud he was about his deal with iran. at the exact same time that ten

american sailors were on their knees with guns in the back of their heads. let me tell you something, friends don't take friends hostage. >> i don't know if you saw these images, they are really horrifying and they really made me really angry this morning to see. american sailors on their knees, hands behind their heads, a female sailor forced to wear a head scarf, penned up in a jail cell. you know why these things happen? because they know they can get away with it when barack obama is in office. they know they can humiliate us. let's turn now to politics as the back and forth between hillary clinton and bernie sanders gets more contentious by the day. it all got started yesterday after clinton was asked if she was nervous about sanders' new if found momentum. >> no, i'm not nervous at all. i'm working hard, and i intend to keep working as hard as i can. >> i think we're in that stage of a campaign where we've each been introducing ourselves. we've been talking about our particular views on issues and
2:35 am
now it's time to draw some contrast. one of the big ones, as you're aware, is on gun safety, where senator sanders has been a pretty reliable vote for the gun lobby, and i have been standing against them for a long time. >> i have a d-minus voting record from the nra. >> correct. >> in 1988, i probably lost a congressional election because i said maybe we should not have assault weapons being sold in america. so to say that i'm kind of a supporter of the nra is really a mean-spirited and unfair and inaccurate statement. >> we have a difference on health care. i want to build on the affordable care act. he's introduced legislation nine times that have laid out a very specific plan to take everybody's health care and roll it into a great big bundle and hand it to the states. but, my view is we shouldn't be ripping up obamacare and starting over. >> now she's attacking me
2:36 am
because i support universal health care. in 2008 she was attacking obama because obama was attacking her because she supported universal health care. i would hope that secretary clinton will tell the american people, does she support universal health care. >> now senator sanders' campaign took to social media, posting this photo from 1993 along with a handwritten message from hillary clinton that reads, quote, to bernie sanders with thanks for your commitment to real health care access for all americans. that comes as the sanders camp claims they're benefiting financially from clinton's recent barrage of attacks. the campaign tells "the washington post" that the money is coming in at nearly four times the average daily rate reported in the last quarter of 2015. and that they raised $1.4 million in a single day after the attacks began. now meanwhile a day after chelsea clinton campaigned for her mother in new hampshire it was former president bill clinton's turn again yesterday. >> the average person who gets

elected president is intelligent, hard-working and honestly tries to do what they say they're going to do when they get there. but there's a big difference in who can do and who can't. so it's important to find somebody with the right temperament, the right experience, the right gifts. to actually do, because we need a grown-up in the room. we need answers. and we need hope fulfilled. it is not close who would be the best president. and it is not close who would be most likely to win the election. >> and president clinton will be back in iowa tomorrow where he has six events schedule the over the span of two days. and donald trump will be center stand in tonight's republican debate. but first his campaign returned to the delegate rich florida last night whose win or take home primary takes place on march the 15th, two months from tomorrow. over 10,000 people turned out on

a wednesday night in pensacola to hear trump talk about ted cruz. president obama's state of the union. and the general election. >> we have another debate tomorrow. they'll all be attacking me. like, you know, they attack. hey. whatever, right? whatever. whatever. ted's been really nice until the last couple of days. ted cruz. he's been really, really nice. other than last couple of days getting a little testy. i've been waiting. i've been waiting. got a little problem, you know, you got to sort of make sure you can run. you got to make sure you can run. a lot of lawyers say you can't run if you do that. you can't be born in canada, you can't be a canadian citizen. supposing he runs, and everybody's banking on him, and then the courts rule that he can't run. that's not so good. what do you do? concede the election to hillary clinton or to crazy bernie? right? >> now stay on the topic of ted cruz. "the new york times" broke a

story on senator ted cruz's finances late yesterday. there was apparently news that ted cruz himself, an investigation found that cruz did not report a major loan that was used to fund his 2012 texas primary campaign. the loan was not listed in cruz's campaign finance reports, and discovered in his personal disclosures later filed with the senate. the loan from goldman sachs where cruz's wife heidi works and is currently on leave and another from citibank increased to a maximum of $1 million before being paid down later that year. reporters watched as cruz apparently read the story on his phone after an event last night. >> we borrowed against the stocks and assets that we had under ordinary terms. if it was the case that they were not filed exactly as the sec requires then we'll amend the filings. our finances are not complicated. we put in the entirety of our savings. we did so through a combination of savings accounts and selling assets and making a margin loan against other assets, and

that -- those facts are clear and transparent, and a technical and inadvertent filing error does not change that at all. >> this meanwhile controversial duck dynasty star phil robertson is getting off the sidelines of the presidential campaign and in to the duck blind. >> qualification for president of the united states are rather narrow. is he or she godly? does he or she love us? can he or she do the job? and finally, would they kill a duck and put him in a pot and make him a good duck gumbo? i've looked at the candidates, ted cruz is my man. he fits the bill. le. >> all right. time now for business where asian markets opened lower again today after a sharp drop on wall street and the dow closed down more than 365 points. the nasdaq down 159 points. and the s&p lost 48. cnbc's carolyn ross joins us live from london. carolyn, what's wall street expecting to open at this

morning? >> hey, good morning you to, louis. well, this morning we are expecting a degree of stabilization looking at futures this morning, they point to very mild gains. but once again, it all depends on what the price of oil is doing yesterday we saw the brent falling below $30 a barrel. that really spooked a lot of investors. wti this morning actually gained roughly 0.7%. last time i checked. but this morning, european markets still down, and as you said asian markets still continuing that sell-off, too. which so far this global sell-off in 2016, it's wiped off some $3 trillion off stock markets. now moving on to some other news, al jazeera america, it's shutting down in april. this is less than three years after it began broadcasting in the u.s. now, what led them to that decision? the ceo of al jazeera america saying it's quote our business model simply isn't sustainable in light of the economic challenges in the u.s. media marketplace. and finally want to bring

you another really interesting story. it revolves around ge. one of the biggest companies in the u.s., they're actually moving their headquarters away from fairfield, connecticut, where they've been since 1974, to boston, massachusetts. and that's a pretty big deal for massachusetts. they offered ge incentives worth up to $145 million, and other states that were vying for that spot, they've been beaten out. georgia, rhode island, texas, one of them. ge plans to bring some 800 jobs to boston. but, a heck of a move, really. >> ge moving up to boston, carolyn roth live from london. thanks so much. now back to another big story this morning at least three people are waking up with a new lease on life after last night's record-breaking $1.5 billion powerball drawing. now winning tickets were sold in florida, tennessee and california. where it was pandemonium at the convenience store where the ticket was sold. nbc's morgan radford joins us live from chino hills just outside of los angeles.
