"first look" starts right now. good morning. i'm gigi stone wood. it was a bare knuckle brawl for republicans served up southern style. the hits came hard and heavy during last night's south carolina debate. the candidates taking on each other while also unleashing vicious attacks at president obama and their democratic rivals. donald trump and senator ted cruz's short friendship appears to be over. here's just a taste, starting with the texas senator's take on new yorkers. >> there are many, many wonderful working men and women in the state of new york. but everyone understands that the values in new york city are socially liberal, are pro-abortion, are pro-gay marriage, focus around money and the media. and, you know, the concept of new york values is not that complicated to figure out. i guess i can frame it another way. not a lot of conservatives come

out of manhattan. i'm just saying. >> when the world trade center came down i saw something that no place on earth could have handled more beautifully and more humanely than new york and the people in new york fought and fought and fought and we saw more death and even the smell of death. nobody understood it. and it was with us for months. the smell. the air. and we rebuilt downtown manhattan. and everybody in the world watched and everybody in the world loved new york and loved new yorkers and i have to tell you that was a very insulting statement that ted made. >> you know back in september my friend donald said he had had his lawyers look at this every which way. and there was no issue there. there was nothing to this birther issue. the constitution hasn't changed but the poll numbers have. listen, i've spent my entire life defending the constitution

before the u.s. supreme court and i'll tell you, i'm not going to be taking legal advice from donald trump. >> ted cruz you used to say you supported doubling the number of green cards. now you say that you're against it. you used to support legalizing people that were here illegally. now you say you're against it. i saw you on the senate floor flip your vote on crop insurance because they told you it would help you in iowa. that is not consistent conservatism, that is political calculation. >> that is the question on entitlements. you had your chance, mark, you blew it. >> we don't have to have refugees come to our country. but all muslims, seriously? what kind of signal does that send to the rest of the world that the united states is a serious player in creating peace and security. >> the guns don't pull the trigger. it's the people that pull the trigger and we have to find out what is going on. >> that's a case we're going to win every state. bernie sanders is the nominee, that's not even an issue. and i know bernie and i can promise you he's not going to be president of the united states. >> i'll tell you what, donald, you very kindly just a moment ago offered me the have slot.

pretty unique statue of liberty salute. you don't want to make new yorkers mad. this just in. bloomberg reporting a houston attorney has filed suit in texas, saying senator ted cruz should be disqualified from the presidential race because of his birth status. now the suit also asks the supreme court to define and clarify the term "natural-born citizen." a cruz campaign spokesman has responded saying, quote, i don't think there will be any standing for the lawsuit. on the democratic side, presidential front-runner hillary clinton was on "the tonight show" last night where she joked around with jimmy fallon about her routines for watching the republican debate. >> last time you were here was the second republican debate. and tonight is the ninth. and you're here again. >> is that a coincidence, you think? >> i think you're dodging watches these debates. you'll do anything to not watch the republican debates. >> yeah. i think you nailed that. >> yeah. >> do you watch with bill? does bill watch, as well? >> sometimes, yeah. he does have a running

angelil was first diagnosed with throat cancer in 1999. in 2014 dion took a leave of absence from her las vegas show to care for him. celine announced on facebook he died thursday at their las vegas home. they have three sons together, and angelil has three children from previous relationships. he was 73 years old. meanwhile, hollywood is mourning the death of beloved actor alan rickman known for his roles in the harry potter films and "die hard." nbc's harry smith will have a look back at his life and career later in the show. the fbi says there's no indication the man who attempted to assassinate a philadelphia police officer was part of a terror cell. fbi director james comey also says there doesn't appear to be any more threats of violence against police relating to the january 7th ambush that severely injured officer jesse hartnett. this contradicts earlier reports that an anonymous tipster told police the shooter edward archer was part of a group that included three other people

something comey is now calling gash. archer previously pledged allegiance to isis. he's been charged with attempted murder but has not yet entered a plea. officer hartnett was shot three times in the attack. he is continuing his recovery. the flint, michigan, water crisis continues as aid from the state national guard begins. protests have erupted over the contaminated water. demonstrators marched to the capitol building in lansing to ask governor rick snyder to resign. governor snyder is seeking aid from president obama asking for genesee county to be declared a federal emergency. if federal aid is granted possible assistance includes temporary housing and home repairs as well as low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses. snyder declared an emergency in flint earlier this month. really sad story. and we're learning more about video released of a chicago officer involved in a shooting in 2013. now we're warning you some viewers may find this video disturbing.

it shows police chasing 17-year-old cedrick chatman circled here. he's suspected of stealing a car. one of the officers believes he the teen has a gun in his hand. chatman was killed after the officer fired three shots. chatman's family contends he was unarmed and that his iphone box was the only thing found at the scene. the independent police review board found the officer was in compliance with department deadly force policy. the statement released by the attorney for both officers said in part the suspect turned with a dark object in his right hand, causing one officer to open fire. going on to say an expert report found the shooting to be justified. the chatman family is filing a wrongful death lawsuit. let's get down to business with cnbc's landon dowdy. good morning. >> hi, gigi, good morning to you, as well. goldman sachs will pay $5 billion as part of a state and federal probe into its role in selling off mortgages in the years leading up to the financial crisis. as part of the settlement the
