"first look" is up next. >> it's friday, january 15th. right now on "first look," the republican candidates squared off, taking shots and landing punches squarely on one another but almost universally going after president obama and the person they fear most. >> you cannot give hillary clinton a third term of barack obama's leadership. >> hillary clinton would be a national security disaster. >> hilly clinton is disqualified from being commander in chief of the united states. a federal judge orders the release of video showing a chicago police officer shooting and killing an unfarmed teen. the husband and manager of celine dion has died after a long battle with throat cancer, and this on the heels of the passing of the great alan rickman known for roles ranging

from "harry potter" to "die hard." "first look" starts right now. good morning. i'm gigi stone wood. it was a bare knuckle brawl for republicans served up southern style. the hits came hard and heavy during last night's south carolina debate. the candidates taking on each other while also unleashing vicious attacks at president obama and their democratic rivals. donald trump and senator ted cruz's short friendship appears to be over. here's just a taste, starting with the texas senator's take on new yorkers. >> there are many, many wonderful working men and women in the state of new york. but everyone understands that the values in new york city are socially liberal, are pro-abortion, are pro-gay marriage, focus around money and the media. and, you know, the concept of new york values is not that complicated to figure out. i guess i can frame it another way. not a lot of conservatives come

out of manhattan. i'm just saying. >> when the world trade center came down i saw something that no place on earth could have handled more beautifully and more humanely than new york and the people in new york fought and fought and fought and we saw more death and even the smell of death. nobody understood it. and it was with us for months. the smell. the air. and we rebuilt downtown manhattan. and everybody in the world watched and everybody in the world loved new york and loved new yorkers and i have to tell you that was a very insulting statement that ted made. >> you know back in september my friend donald said he had had his lawyers look at this every which way. and there was no issue there. there was nothing to this birther issue. the constitution hasn't changed but the poll numbers have. listen, i've spent my entire life defending the constitution

before the u.s. supreme court and i'll tell you, i'm not going to be taking legal advice from donald trump. >> ted cruz you used to say you supported doubling the number of green cards. now you say that you're against it. you used to support legalizing people that were here illegally. now you say you're against it. i saw you on the senate floor flip your vote on crop insurance because they told you it would help you in iowa. that is not consistent conservatism, that is political calculation. >> that is the question on entitlements. you had your chance, mark, you blew it. >> we don't have to have refugees come to our country. but all muslims, seriously? what kind of signal does that send to the rest of the world that the united states is a serious player in creating peace and security. >> the guns don't pull the trigger. it's the people that pull the trigger and we have to find out what is going on. >> that's a case we're going to win every state. bernie sanders is the nominee, that's not even an issue. and i know bernie and i can promise you he's not going to be president of the united states. >> i'll tell you what, donald, you very kindly just a moment ago offered me the have slot.
2:04 am
i'll tell you what. if this all works out i'm happy to consider naming you as have. >> i like that. i like it. i'd consider it. but i think i'll go back to building buildings if it doesn't work out. >> i'm very happy to get a question this early on. i was going to ask you to wake me up when the time came. >> just a warm and fuzzy love fest. so who won? the response on facebook seems in line with the polls. trump was the most discussed candidate on the social media site followed by cruz, marco rubio, ben carson and chris christie. now while most candidates are focusing on iowa, it was new hampshire voters who were most engaged in the debate on facebook. bernie sanders' home state of vermont was second most followed by south carolina, virginia, and new jersey. iran was the most discussed issue followed by immigration, isis, the economy, and guns. and check out this head line in the new york daily news, which i would say speaks volumes about their opinion of the texas senator. drop dead, ted. and go back to canada with a

pretty unique statue of liberty salute. you don't want to make new yorkers mad. this just in. bloomberg reporting a houston attorney has filed suit in texas, saying senator ted cruz should be disqualified from the presidential race because of his birth status. now the suit also asks the supreme court to define and clarify the term "natural-born citizen." a cruz campaign spokesman has responded saying, quote, i don't think there will be any standing for the lawsuit. on the democratic side, presidential front-runner hillary clinton was on "the tonight show" last night where she joked around with jimmy fallon about her routines for watching the republican debate. >> last time you were here was the second republican debate. and tonight is the ninth. and you're here again. >> is that a coincidence, you think? >> i think you're dodging watches these debates. you'll do anything to not watch the republican debates. >> yeah. i think you nailed that. >> yeah. >> do you watch with bill? does bill watch, as well? >> sometimes, yeah. he does have a running

commentary. >> he does? >> we both do. can you believe what he just said? >> yeah, yeah, yeah. >> what does that mean? i have no idea. >> you should have a drinking game, every time they say your name you do a shot. >> well, it's fun. >> i don't think i'd make it past the first half hour. >> and they don't say her name with a smile. on sunday, it's the democrats' turn to square off in charleston, south carolina. now in their final debate before iowa, and nbc's lester holt will be moderating. you can watch it live on 9:00 p.m. eastern, 6:00 pacific time right here on nbc. celine dion's husband rene has died after a long battle with cancer. he discovered the singer when she was just 12 years old and served as her manager and mentor. he even mortgaged his home to pay for dion's first record. their relationship turned romantic in 1987. they married in '94 when he was 52 years old and she was 26.

angelil was first diagnosed with throat cancer in 1999. in 2014 dion took a leave of absence from her las vegas show to care for him. celine announced on facebook he died thursday at their las vegas home. they have three sons together, and angelil has three children from previous relationships. he was 73 years old. meanwhile, hollywood is mourning the death of beloved actor alan rickman known for his roles in the harry potter films and "die hard." nbc's harry smith will have a look back at his life and career later in the show. the fbi says there's no indication the man who attempted to assassinate a philadelphia police officer was part of a terror cell. fbi director james comey also says there doesn't appear to be any more threats of violence against police relating to the january 7th ambush that severely injured officer jesse hartnett. this contradicts earlier reports that an anonymous tipster told police the shooter edward archer was part of a group that included three other people

handled. >> very polite. >> these guys hate each other i would say by now. >> at least they're expressing it for the first time. but is the vitriol ever going to have a back lash from the voters? >> well, you know, you got to look at it in two ways. it does seem to appeal to the core republican voters who want these folks to be tough and vicious and particularly to be anti-hillary, anti-obama, and anti-washington. will it draw in people in the middle, independent voters they need to win in november? i don't know. that's going to be pretty tough. >> it really is the question. and now there's a real lawsuit about this birther argument. does this have legs? >> well, you know, probably not. but the fact that there's a little bit of doubt there, gigi, is exactly what donald trump is trying to do to ted cruz. he's not really making the case so strong. but he is saying well, you know, you don't really know. just casting that little doubt in there. >> and over at -- in iowa, democratic side, i mean, it's getting closer and closer between bernie sanders and hillary clinton. how is he gaining so much
2:22 am
traction? >> well, you know, in the same way that there is republican energy kind of on the far right, on the far left the progressives, you know, really are more liberal than hillary clinton is. and so bernie has done a good job of stirring that up, of getting people's passions, encouraging them on issues that they really care about, income inequality, particularly. and you know what? it seems to be working among core republican voters. give bernie credit for that. >> clinton herself doesn't seem to be sweating it, though. unlike some people in her camp. >> yeah. she may be sweating it a little bit. i mean, you know -- >> she's playing it well? >> she's gotten a little rougher and i think it's getting a little more personal between the two of those. listen, iowa is february 1. the voting begins. all of these people are right at crunch time. >> we talked about the mean rhetoric that's flying around the gloves being off, no more niceties. how much further is this going to go? how much further can it go? >> what are you doing between now and november? let me put it like that. this is -- we get a lot of this. come on, you've got to admit from our chair, from the media's

side, from the people's side, it's been kind of entertaining. >> entertaining and frightening at the same time. >> you care about your country. i guess that's the other question. >> yes, if you are a passionate voter then entertaining is only so -- will only take you so far. >> that's right. but in the midst of all of it you do have to say we are finally getting to some issues, hashing out some stuff that actually matters. it does matter what happens with the tax system and what goes on with immigration. a lot more fun to come, i promise you. >> watching the democratic debate on sunday on nbc. >> you know, when is that on again? i forget. they put them on at these times you can never remember. >> martin o'malley, watch him. >> the republicans frankly are more fun. >> ellis henican, thank you so much. just ahead, remembering a beloved actor a look back at british actor alan rickman's long, distinguished career. next up. style... ...reinvented. sophistication... ...redefined. introducing the all-new lexus rx and rx hybrid.
