and regardless of party affiliation he did all seem to feel more or less the same way about our republican presidential front-runner. and now i have to go look up the word wazook. how do you spell it? that does it for us tonight. "first look" is up next. it's tuesday, january 19th, and right now on "first look," the gop front-runners busy labeling one another nasty or liberal. but a new poll shows the contentious primary is hurting the party. an epic protest from black lives matter pits police against professors in a massive standoff. one of the greatest and best-selling rock 'n' rollers of all-time, the eagles' glenn frey dead at 67. >> plus an absence of diversity. 47 cents a gallon for gasoline. is this for real? and the curse of number one in college hoops. the increasingly contentious primary appears to be starting to wear on voters, especially on the republican side. the latest nbc news/"wall street journal" poll shows that more than 4 in 10 voters say this election cycle's primary contest has soured their view of the republican party, compared to just 19% who feel more favorably. this compared to voters' views of the democrats. 54% say the primary has not changed their view of the party. the democratic race is getting more heated, though, as senator bernie sanders gains ground on hillary clinton in both iowa and new hampshire. both candidates were in south carolina for a martin luther king jr. memorial. sanders then headed to a rally in birmingham, alabama where he got an early shot in against his democratic opponents. >> we began this campaign about nine months ago, and when we began we were 50 points behind. we were 50 points behind the

inevitable, inevitable democratic nominee. well, guess what? that inevitable candidate ain't so inevitable today. >> the fight for new hampshire is also heating up between republican front-runner donald trump and senator ted cruz and so are the personal attacks. nbc's hallie jackson has the details. >> reporter: 9:00 a.m., lindy's diner and ted cruz gets served yet another question about his closest rival. >> are you really going to get mr. trump to build that wall? >> if he doesn't, he's fired. >> reporter: at the same time donald trump's on his way to liberty university in virginia hoping to pry evangelical support from cruz. >> 2 corinthians, right? 2 corinthians:317, that's the whole ball game. >> reporter: and then taking off for concord, in new hampshire. and so are we. following the two front-runners

in one state on one day as their former bromance blows up into a brawl. >> he's a nasty guy, nobody likes him, nobody in congress likes him. nobody likes him anywhere once they get to know him. >> he's losing support and going down in the polls and his response is to attack and get personal. i don't intend to respond in kind. >> reporter: but cruz is responding and hitting trump as too liberal. >> ronald reagan when he was younger was a pretty strong liberal and he became quite conservative. >> ronald reagan did not spend the first 60 years of his life supporting democratic politicians. >> reporter: the candidates sprinting toward a photo finish in iowa. still, trump couldn't resist a laugh at a different rival's expense after a dog yelped at his rally. >> uh-oh, it's hillary. >> reporter: all smiles with the day nearly over but the front-runners' fight far from it. >> that was nbc's hallie jackson reporting. musician glen fry, best known as a founding member of the eagles died yesterday

afternoon after battling ailments. he wrote classics such as "heart ache tonight", "hotel california." "take it easy" and the number one hit "new kid in town" a song he also sang lead vocals on. ♪ johnny come lately the new kid in town ♪ ♪ everybody loves you don't let them down ♪ >> frey also had a successful solo career in the 1980s with hits such as "the heat is on." in a touching statement fellow eagles founding member don henley said frey was like a brother to knee and he was the one who started it all. paul stanley, of kiss, wrote on twitter that he was shocked and shared a picture of himself with frey and the rock 'n' roll hall of fame. long time friend and fellow musician bob seger said frey was brilliant and a joy to be around while calling him the leader of the eagles.

glenn frey dead at the age of 67. ahead of his state of the state address today michigan governor rick snyder is under increased criticism over the handling of the flit water crisis. yesterday protesters marched to his ann arbor home calling for not only his resignation but his arrest as well. this as dozens of additional members of the national guard descend on flint to aid residents by handing out bottled water and filtering water testing kits. the water problem arose in 2014 after a city manager appointed by governor snyder in an effort to save money switched the city's tap water source to the flint river. tests later showed the river lacked proper treatment causing lead to leak from old pipes into the city's water supply. in california 24 black live matter protesters were arrested on martin luther king jr. day after shutting down parts of the bay bridge which connects san francisco and oakland. protesters stopped traffic by driving to the middle of the bridge and then chaining

themselves to their cars and to each other. they say they took the action to protest police brutality. westbound traffic on the bay bridge was shut down for more than 45 minutes during rush hour. now to growing outrage over the lack of diversity in oscar nominations. it's now threatening to trigger a full-fledged boycott by some of the movie industry's biggest names. nbc's morgan radford has more from los angeles. >> reporter: with the oscars just a few weeks away the buzz even about who's nominated but rather who isn't. there isn't a single actor of color up for a lead or supporting role, prompting the viral #oscarssowhite for the second year in a row. along with beast of no nation's elba and creed's michael b. jordan, will smith went unrecognized for his role in concussion. >> is it time that people of color recognize how much power, influence, that we have amassed, that we no longer need to ask to

the academy released a statement saying in part, i am both heartbroken and frustrated about the lack of inclusion. this is a difficult but important conversation, and it's time for big changes. on sunday, a small town in michigan experienced a flashback to 1973 when the price of gas plunged to 47 cents a gallon. beacon and bridge market sold regular unleaded gas well below a dollar. b&b caused a price war with two other gas stations in the area. there were so many motorists at the popular shop that local police were called in to direct traffic. by monday the competition ended, and prices were back to today's market prices. all right let's get down to business now with cnbc's landon dowdy. >> good morning, shannon. wall street will try to put the first two weeks of 2016 behind it. the dow dropping more than 1400 points on worries about china's economy and tumbling oil prices but stocks could bounce back today. oil is higher today although

still below $30 a barrel. and look for more earnings from bank of america, morgan stanley and ibm. investors appear to be shrugging off news that china's gdp slowed to 6.9% last year. that's the weakest growth in 25 years. however, the slowdown was expected and it's prompting speculation of more economic stimulus measures from the government. meanwhile netflix is doubling down on content for kids. the streaming service announcing it will offer 20 new family oriented shows this year, saying there's not enough of that type of programming on traditional tv. netflix will spend $5 billion on content this year, including the much-anticipated remake of "full house." you got it, dude. back over to you. >> you got it, dude. i love it, landon. let's check sports now, it is steph versus lebron, as the two get tied up on a screen play. but james gets called for the push, not much else came of that, though. so we'll let it go. warriors put a beating on the cavs as curry nailed seven three pointers en route to scoring 35.

welcome back to "first look." check out this. temperatures in minneapolis have been hovering around zero. so one man decided to have a little frozen fun. this pair of jeans, well, he got them wet, then he trapped them up in his front yard. of course they froze instantly. the idea soon caught on and now -- >> invisible man is shirtless again. >> the neighborhood was lined with frozen jeans. >> looks like a fun neighborhood. >> scare crows in iowa, we can do that in minnesota. the temperatures are the story this morning. going out and getting your self ready for school and work. negative windchills from minneapolis, d.c. we're at 4. pittsburgh negative 9.

chicago unfortunately you're the leader there at negative 13. it's a very cold morning. all the way down into the south. we have a little clipper low that's going to go through the cold air mass and it's going to produce fluffy snow as we go throughout the next two days. today, omaha through missouri, kansas city, even st. louis will have some fluffy snow. maybe an inch or two. maybe as much as three. paducah to evansville and this little area of southern kentucky could be a little heavier. you probably heard about this big snowstorm coming for the east coast. here's how it's going to look according to our american computer model. this is friday into sunday. this is saturday morning, when the storm is at its strongest, very strong winds into maryland, southern new jersey and delaware, coastal flooding possible and high tide cycles. the heaviest snow would be i-95 back towards the mountains and then it looks like the trend is for a little less snow, especially central and northern new england, but definitely hitting southern new england, and our other computer model, our european model still watching the days ahead, pretty good agreement. we do look like the areas of heaviest snow most likely somewhere in the mountains of

west virginia, v, maryland, delaware the big cities are still a question mark. >> we know how they love snow down there. >> will be interesting. >> hope for less than more there. thank you, bill. a freak accident in maryland last night where one driver is lucky to be arrive after a light pole pierced through the roof just missing the driver. the pole fell down after a fire department ambulance crashed into it after being sideswiped by another car. two medics on board suffered non-life-threatening injuries. health experts are calling it a pandemic in the making. the cdc has confirmed that hawaii has the first known baby to be born in the u.s. with a zika viral infection. the virus passes through mosquito bites and causes microenselfly a birth defect where infants are born with smaller heads and brains. last week the cdc issued a warning to pregnant women and women of child-bearing age to avoid traveling to 14 countries south of the u.s. border. a dramatic high speed chase in southern california last night ended with the suspect's mercedes benz spinning around as she tries to outmaneuver a

california highway patrol vehicle. six dogs were in the car, with a few of them jumping from the back seat of the suspect's vehicle after the woman got out of the car. freeway lanes were closed as patrol officers wrangled those dogs. it is a glass church cinderella would just love. look at that. a town in southwest taiwan built this 55 foot tall church that looks like a giant high heeled shoe. it's made entirely out of metal and blue tinted glass. that church will open to the public in february. pretty cool. well it's a big-name republican about to go rogue and support donald trump? "scrambled politics" is next.

all right. here's today's dish of "scrambled politics." speculation is building about a possible big name from up north endorsing donald trump for president. yes, former alaskan governor sarah palin is rumored to be throwing her support behind trump at a special announcement planned in iowa today. palin has sung trump's praises publicly in the past and an endorsement would certainly be a boost for trump especially within the grassroots movement. our friends across the pond don't seem to share the former vice presidential candidate's view of the donald. yesterday members of the british parliament debated whether or not to ban him from the country over his, quote, racist views with some calling trump crazy with no valid points to make, who undermines the safety and security of british citizens. an online petition to ban trump has already been signed by more

than half a million people. sounds like they're not acting on that, though. the democrats and "the new york times" hillary clinton get set for a long slog against bernie sanders. the "times" reports that clinton's campaign is gearing up for a primary battle that could go all the way to may. seems so far away. as the vermont senator gains ground in iowa and new hampshire, as well. and with the general consensus that he won sunday's democratic debate. while clinton and sanders duked it out during the debate former governor martin o'malley had trouble getting a word in, something that didn't go unnoticed by "the tonight show's" jimmy fallon. >> and the other democratic candidate martin o'malley was also at the debates but it seemed like every time o'malley tried to jump in the other candidates and moderators just cut him off. well, o'malley was not happy about it. in fact, here he is in an interview this morning, talking about how he was treated. >> so i thought last night's debate was -- >> well, you get the idea. >> way to pile on, jimmy. that is your morning dish of "scrambled politics." i'm joined now by political analyst and best-selling author

ellis henican. good morning to you. >> you know, i know exactly how he feels. the same thing happens to me all the time. >> what do you mean? never here. all right let's talk about iowa. we've got just a couple weeks to go. no more debates for the democrats here. be truthful here, as a political analyst, how surprised are you that we've gotten to the point where they're basically in a dead heat? there was a time where people said bernie sanders was an outsider wasn't going to happen, here we are ahead of iowa, almost in a dead heat. >> am i surprised is that the question? well let me think a 74-year-old socialist from vermont, with a strong brooklyn accent, why wouldn't he soar right to the top? yes, it's surprising. yes. i think even people in the sanders campaign, frankly, are a little surprised about how he has gone from down by 50 points to actually being really dead even in these first few states. >> people thought maybe joe biden was the only thing that might trip up hillary being a sure thing. >> that is right. when you start using the term long slog about your campaign, that shows that you're actually worrying about your opponent.

>> so how do you see this going in iowa? >> i think in iowa, i think that hillary's likely to pull it out in iowa at the last minute. she has a better ground game and in some ways she's more suited to the electorate there. i think in new hampshire bernie is quite likely to win and that's a -- you know you got to shake your head at that and say that's quite amazing. >> it is quite amazing considering how far he's come. >> yeah. >> let's talk about the gop side of things here. things are very tight for cruz and trump in iowa. >> they are. and ugly. >> getting a little bit uglier. remember they used to be friends. what is going to be the differencemaker in these final two weeks leading up to iowa and who do you think is going to take it? >> you got to say ground game. iowa is so complicated. you know, they don't just vote there. they have to get together for these caucuses and hang around with their neighbors for hours. you know, you really have to want it. and whether turning out a big crowd for a rally is the same as getting someone to a caucus, i mean, that's really the question. i don't think it's about energy and ideology at this point, i really do think it's about who's got the organization on the
