2:30 am
show bernie sanders trouncing hillary clinton with the primary less than three weeks away. plus a tough tuesday for ted cruz, after getting snubbed by two conservative leaders, including sarah palin. she decided to throw her support behind donald trump. >> oh, listen, i love sarah palin. sarah palin is fantastic. without her friendship and support i wouldn't be in the senate today. and breaking news this morning, another deadly attack in pakistan. gunmen storm a university and we're told students, teachers, and terrorists are among the dead. it is 5:30 on the east coast, 2:30 out west. this is "way too early." good morning, everyone. it is wednesday, january 20th, i'm shiba russell.
2:31 am
we want to get straight to that breaking news out of pakistan this morning. where the taliban is claiming responsibility for a deadly attack at a university. it took place in northwest pakistan. about 30 miles away from the city of peshawar. a local lawmaker tells nbc news at least 20 people are dead, another 60 injured, after gunmen stormed the university. they reportedly scaled the walls around the campus. one regional police chief tells nbc news the armed men fired at security guards, students and teachers. according to one military official, at least four of the gunmen were killed during a shoot-out with security forces. the taliban has also claimed responsibility for a bombing attack at a nearby police checkpoint yesterday, killing at least 10 people. and back in december 2014, the taliban attacked a nearby military school, about 150 teachers and students were killed in that attack. after the incident, pakistani officials increased security at

several educational facilities. okay for more on this we are joined over the phone by nbc news producer based out of pakistan. what more do we know about this particular attack? >> good morning, shiba. we know that the attack lasted three hours, started around 9:00 this morning. we are making our way over to charsadda to see the chaos there. 19 people, most of them students, are confirmed dead. 51 are confirmed as injured. we know that the military forces got here before them. the police did a lot of fighting as did the local villagers. the attackers scaled the back walls, cut through the barbed wires using bolt cutters. they were first engaged by local security at the university on campus before security forces arrived. they used, according to military sources, militants used the
2:33 am
cover of fog to deceptively scale the wall, and then proceeded onto one of the main guest houses on campus, where most of the killings occurred. >> waz, has this attack been connected to that december 2014 attack yet? >> -- started -- northwest of pakistan near the tribal area near avz. that a school for younger kids -- university -- institutions. [ bad audio ] >> we seem to be losing your signal there, but thank you so much for joining us, reporting live from pakistan this morning. okay with less than two weeks before the iowa caucuses the race for the democratic
2:34 am
nomination has never looked closer. a new monmouth university poll of democrats nationwide shows bernie sanders now trailing hillary clinton by 15 points. she led by 33 points in this poll a month ago. that comes as a new wmur/cnn poll out of new hampshire shows sanders opening up a commanding 27-point lead over clinton. he led by ten points in his poll back in december. clinton led by eight points in june. the vermont senator is viewed favorably by 91% of the new hampshire democrats polled while clinton is viewed favorably by just 65%. and take a look at the trend. since last year, senator sanders net favorable rating in new hampshire has steadily improved, while secretary clinton's has eroded over the same time period. that all comes as senator sanders continues to criticize clinton's record out on the trail, staying on the attack about her wall street record and making a tough comparison when it comes to the question of experience. >> i think on the crucial
2:35 am
foreign policy issue of our time, it turns out that secretary clinton, with all of her experience, was wrong, and i was right. experience is important. dick cheney had a lot of experience. a whole lot of people have experience, but do not necessarily have the right judgment. goldman sachs is part of the revolving door politics of washington. over the last several decades, goldman sachs, a corrupt, major financial institution, had two secretary of the treasury. this same financial institution provides huge amounts of money in campaign contributions, and in speaking fees to unnamed candidates. >> the clinton campaign responded, saying sanders is now taking cues from republicans. in a statement they point out that karl rove also attacked clinton for receiving speaking fees from goldman sachs.
2:36 am
"the new york times" reports that clinton backers are increasingly sending warning cries about the dangers of nominating a socialist. senator claire mccaskill tells the paper, republicans won't touch him because they can't wait to run an ad with a hammer and sickle. and missouri governor jay nixon said a sanders candidacy would mean a meltdown all the way down the ballot. but sanders continues to fight back in what he calls the political establishment. here's what he said on msnbc last night in response to the nation's largest lgbt group endorsing his opponent. >> we're taking on not only wall street, and the economic establishment, we're taking on the political establishment. so i have friends and supporters in the human rights fund, in planned parenthood. but you know what? hillary clinton has been around there for a very, very long time. and some of these groups are, in fact, part of the establishment. >> and clinton tweeted this in response, quote, really senator sanders? how can you say that groups like planned parenthood and the human
2:37 am
rights campaign are part of the establishment you're taking on? a new document obtained by nbc news shows that hillary clinton's home e-mail server contained information classified as the most sensitive level. an internal watchdog says some of clinton e-mails contained information classified top secret, special access program, and two intelligence officials say the e-mails in question are not the same ones that we reported on before, containing top secret information. what we do know here whether the former secretary of state sent what we don't know, rather, is whether she sent or received the documents. donald trump had a big day in iowa yesterday. he began with a stop at the john wayne museum in winterset where he won the backing of wayne's daughter and talked about what the duke meant to him. >> john wayne represented strength, he represented power, he represented what the people are looking today because we have exactly the opposite from john wayne right now in this country.
2:38 am
and he represented real strength and an inner strength that you don't see very often. and that's why with this endorsement it meant so much to me. >> and trump got his biggest endorsement yet from 2008. vp nominee and former alaska governor sarah palin. >> you ready for a commander in chief who will let our warriors do their job and go kick isis ass! ready for someone who will secure our borders to secure our jobs and to secure our homes? ready to make america great again. are you ready to stump for trump? i'm here to support the next president of the united states, donald trump! >> meanwhile, iowa governor terry branstad, a republican, and the longest-serving governor in american history, shocked many yesterday when he said he wants to see ted cruz defeated. this despite cruz hovering at the top of the state's polls for nearly two months, alongside donald trump, who stands to
2:39 am
benefit from the governor's statement. >> ted cruz is ahead right now, but what we're doing is, we're trying to educate the people of iowa, he is the biggest opponent of renewable fuels. he is heavily financed by big oil. and i believe that would be a big mistake for iowa to support him. and i know he's ahead in the polls, but the only poll that counts is the one they take on caucus night. >> i know the governor just made a very big statement. that was appreciated by many, and that was amazing, actually, and he's a respected man and when he speaks, people listen. it is no surprise that the establishment is in full panic mode. the washington cartel lives on cronyism. it lives on making deals. it lives on picking winners and losers, and supporting corporate welfare. and we will see, like the empire strikes back, the establishment will strike back, because they don't want an end to the cronyism, and the gravy train from washington.
2:40 am
this morning we are hearing for the first time from some of the men who were held in iran. "the washington post" has published this lighthearted video of jason rezaian with his wife. they're seen laughing as she shows him a farsi language video that circulated early in his prison time. poking fun at the idea that jason could be a spy. u.s. marine amir hekmati spoke to reporters yesterday for the first time since being released from iran. he said everything feels surreal, adding that his release came as a surprise. >> you know, i was at a point where i had just sort of accepted the fact that i was going to be spending ten years in prison. so this was a surprise. and i just feel extremely blessed to see my government do so much for me, and the other americans. as soon as we got out of iranian airspace, the champagne bottles were popped, and the swiss are amazing. their hospitality, chocolates, veal was served. and we were on a private jet that usually the foreign
2:41 am
minister of switzerland, or the ambassadors use, so this -- they really did an excellent job and we thank them for the hospitality. >> meanwhile, the family of former fbi agent robert levinson, who has been missing for nine years now in iran, is less optimistic. >> don't get me wrong, we're very happy for these families. but we wish we were among them right now. we're not celebrating with the swiss chocolates and veal and things like that. we're just devastated. we're not getting any answers. we're not hearing from our government. we have been abandoned. and it's just the worst feeling in the world, and i wouldn't wish this upon anyone. >> the iranian government has always denied knowledge of levinson's disappearance and has offered help in searching for him. republican presidential candidate ben carson temporarily suspended his campaign after one of his volunteers died in a car crash. the campaign identified him as 25-year-old braden joplin. two other volunteers and a campaign aide were also injured in iowa when a van they were
2:42 am
riding in hit a patch of ice and flipped on its side before being struck by another vehicle. carson, who was campaigning in south carolina when he got the news, canceled his remaining events yesterday, as well as events today, and flew to nebraska, where joplin was rushed for treatment. carson described joplin as an amazing young man, while speaking to reporters last night in omaha. >> braden joplin was an amazing young man. i had an opportunity to -- to get to know him. and the thing that impressed me the most was how compassionate he was. how caring he was. about the feelings of other people. you know, life is so fleeting. and we have to make the most of every bit of it that we can. but if every one of us could just think about how we can make somebody else's life better, what a fitting tribute that
2:43 am
would be to braden. >> the three other passengers were treated and released from a nearby iowa hospital. michigan's governor faces growing demands for his resignation over the catastrophe that exposed nearly 100,000 residents of flint to elevated lead levels in their water supply. last night in his state of the state address, rick snyder accepted full responsibility, and issued a sweeping direct apology to the city's residents. >> to begin, i'd like to address the people of flint. your families face a crisis. a crisis you did not create, and could not have prevented. to you, the people of flint, i say tonight, i am sorry and i will fix it. no citizen of this great state should endure this kind of catastrophe. government failed you. federal, state and local leaders, by breaking the trust you placed in us.
2:44 am
i'm sorry most of all that i let you down. you deserve better. you deserve accountability. >> as a step toward greater transparency, snyder also promised to release work-related e-mails from 2014 and 2015. hours before he spoke, the epa faulted the state for not responding to the crisis quickly enough, saying, quote, what happened in flint should not have happened. we want to turn to business now, where the big head line again today is oil. the global glut drove prices below $28 a barrel in early trading. cnbc's nancy hulgrave joins us live from london. nancy, this news comes just as leaders are meeting in davos for the world economic forum. oil, sure to be a major topic this year. >> that's right, shiba. because as you said, oil is on the back foot again. we had hoped we were getting a bit of a bounce when we spoke just yesterday. but once again, crude getting below that $28 a barrel level. and the world's leaders, oil
2:45 am
executives, and ceos among them are meeting at the world economic forum in davos, as you suggested, very concerned about this ongoing volatility in oil prices as it continues to bring down equity markets, as well. but it's not just executives in the alps, famous movie star leonardo dicaprio was also there receiving an award for his work in climate change but rather than pay tribute to the oil executives there he shot out at their corporate greed and insisted that we have to do something about climate change and said that fossil fuels should remain in the ground. that was the message from leonardo dicaprio. we'll have to see if the oil executives have any response as think continue to deal with the declining price in crude at the moment. shiba, back to you. >> nancy hulgrave. thank you so much, live from london. still ahead here on "way too early," new pressure on the fantasy sports industry this morning. plus acting fast. jamie foxx being hailed a hero after saving a man whose car went up in flames. hear the actor explain exactly what he saw. those stories and a check on weather when "way too early" comes right back.

2:51 am
here. broncos defensive end malik jackson echoed those sentiments telling nbc's pro football talk live that brady is a whiner who throws temper tantrums. >> your teammate antonio smith says that tom brady will take a hit but he also cries about it afterward. what kind of things have you heard him say -- >> when we played him last time he definitely threw some temper tantrums. it's one of the things that he definitely, you know, what's going on? why? oh, man dashs definitely one of those whines. but you know, it's a competitive game, you know. i know i wouldn't be whining like that, you know, but some people do. he definitely is a whiner. but he's -- >> i'm whining over this potential snowstorm on the way this weekend. >> is that your transition? >> oh, no, snow! oh, no. >> some people are excited about it. a lot of kids are like, bring it on. they want to play. >> feet and feet of snow. >> little difficult. if you can't get out your front door to go play in the snow for the kids, too. let's break down the timing of this storm. i have major here.
