there's music in dance group called the u.s.a. freedom kids and this is how they spread freedom by singing and dancing in tribute to donald trump. kids say the darnedest things. it would be nice to shine a
3:01 am
light on a candidate who isn't donald trump for once. here they are performing their song for a candidate who needs support. none other than jeb bush. >> so cute. good morning everyone. it's thursday, january 21st. it's my mom's birthday. oh my gosh. happy birthday. i've got to get on that. >> she's going to get a snowstorm. >> yes, she is. they're getting a huge storm in washington. it's coming through new york. donnie is with us. happy birthday. also harold ford jr. is back.
3:02 am
you guys still talking? >> i love joe. >> really? you guys between the segments yesterday, whoo. it was like off the air. >> there were no fists were there? >> no, but i will tell you we've started comparing golf clubs. it's nasty. >> on capitol hill we have jeremy peters and manchester, new hampshire manager of bloomberg politics, mark halperin. we have a lot to get with in the polls and big changes just happened. >> what do you mean? >> remember they were saying there's not enough debates, it's controlling the election and she said this is a decision i've reached and i've consulted with many people including our officers and said this is the best way to approach it. everyone went after it again and
3:03 am
again and again and especially martin because he wanted a voice and felt like the debates would unite a conversation. >> willie, obviously, what mika speaks of is the democrats panicking. you screwed yourself and limited yourself to six debates. you screwed yourself and hillary is in trouble. just like that. six hours later they're trying to control it another way. >> it's a forum. >> yeah, forum.
3:04 am
we've said this for months and months. when the history of the campaign was written, the dncs behavior was looked@a nonflattering way. the campaign pointed it out and the dnc has done a terrible job hiding. >> all of them not helping hillary clinton. this does not, again, i would vote and they're not getting her there. >> what's spresing is good democrats are also good hillary clinton supporters. harold ford said we need more debates anyway. they're hiding the debates on sunday nights and going up against nfl games and i think you've been saying they need more debates. it feeds into the 2016 narrative that the political process is rigged and the party bosses in d.c. are rigging it for their favorite candidates. >> i said earlier with mika i
3:05 am
thought the chairwoman was wrong picking only five or six debates. martin raised it early in the campaign. whether they thought they were helping mrs. clinton or not is not the issue. the issue is this is a democratic process and we deserve an opportunity for these candidates. maybe she'll change her mind. >> it appeared to be helping her and now that it appears to not be helping her. >> mrs. clinton? >> it was helping hillary they thought and this is the defense. they made a mistake and it's blown up in their face. donnie, we asked you about donald trump. now we have to turn to the democratic side. the iron media, it seems today if there's a nomination we'll be locked up quickly, it could be the republican nomination and
3:06 am
democrats could be in. i've been talking to so many supporters of hillary, so many democrats over the past week and a half and they're just shaking their heads saying they don't know what's going on and don't know what's wrong with hillary and bernie sanders cannot be the nominee. they are going through what the republicans have been going through for six months. >> i think this will be good for hillary. the wrap on hillary, it's carbonation. so the fact that she's going to have to go a couple of rounds and particularly against sanders although he's an appealing guy. >> she's losing by 27 points in new hampshire. >> we're going into the south where it's going to change even if he wins the first two.
3:07 am
>> how do you know that? how do you know it's going to change? >> i don't think there's enough electorate. this is not the trump scenario. >> i think it allows her to define herself. i think these rounds are going to help her long term. people want to see her beat up a little. why doesn't she have to fight?
3:08 am
>> i saw bernie sander's rally in alabama. i haven't seen anywhere approaching that number of people at any hillary clinton rally. >> i don't think anybody can tell you what the world looks like if sanders wins the first two states. he has the momentum. i think that might be why you see this. she needs opportunities to kind of write her ship and reassert the primacy she has. she's far more likelily than sanders to be the nominee. bill clinton was as good as i've seen him in years. he may be what saves his wife in new hampshire or iowa. he's trying to figure out to feel what's the right frame to take sanders down and stop his momentum. >> i disagree with mark on bill clinton. i saw him the other day and
3:09 am
mentioned a couple of weeks ago, he use to be the big day and now there's a gient republican level barking. clinton seems old and seems yesterday. i do not see that same magic out there. >> bill clinton and donald trump are the same age. i don't know if you saw amy's piece but talking about how bill's problems from the 1990s were impacting hillary with the younger women voters right now.
3:10 am
>> if you look at poll numbers he's tight in the party. >> now go back to it. i'm serious. for politicians, you got to know when to wear the dark suit, white shirt and red tie and you got to know when to look like that. if you are chasing a guy from burli burlington, vermont and trying to paint yourself as a new hampshire person, bingo. >> okay. >> i know it sounds shallow, but mitt romney would have worn a three piece suit there. it matters.
3:11 am
>> i would like to see trump in a cardigan. >> you saw he dressed down for java joe's. >> the problem with the cardigan is the trump family, they're so large on it, it's hard to button. >> it weighs it down. >> he's got, i don't know because i've never worn one, but somehow they're 24 carat gold flex. >> i picture trump sitting by a pool with that suit and red tie. it never comes off. >> the iowa caucuses, the poll of the national republican field has trump at 36%, 19 points ahead of cruz. marco rubio, 11 pegs. ben carson, 8%. judging the top and at a times, 37% of republicans say trump has a better chance of defeating hillary clinton.
3:12 am
between trump and rubio, trump is seen as the better choice the beat clinton 47-22%. with new hampshire voting, in 19 days trump is still on top while the deck is shuffling beneath him. cruz climbed eight points to 14%. bush at 10% tied with marco rubio. >> we're going to do this again. mark halperin, this is probably the fourth or fifth state poll we've shone over the past two da days. do we have a redistribution of the establishment vote? are people giving up on marco saying hey, you know what, maybe we need to go back to our first choice? >> they're not giving up on him
3:13 am
but there's an incredible equalization in new hampshire and some extent nationally. >> marco is losing. he's losing four points here. he was losing in the florida poll three or four points other candidates seem to be going up. we are seeing marco rubio in every poll going down. i'm not picking on him. i'm asking you. you're in new hampshire on the ground, why is this guy losing support? >> well, in part because i think the other three establishment candidates are all moving up. they're all beating each other up and rubio has taken a fair amount of beating including by ted cruz. rubio is the odds on favor to finish third in iowa and at this point here in new hampshire and the states that follow, while rubio may have lost a little
3:14 am
bit, the great thing is equalization. all of them are fighting hard and may end up with 10% of the vote each which would be incredible for trump and cruz. rubio, maybe he's declined a little bit. he's just as strong as the the other three establishment candidates again. >> i'm not trying to say marco's campaign is in a dyer situation. any campaign you have three or four state polls that matter and you're down a week to go before the first caucus is a problem. any theory of the case? why is he dropping in from florida to new hampshire? >> i think there's three things. one is he has been battered by negati
3:15 am
negative attacks. two is some people are choosing someone they think can take on trump and cruz. bush has been the most assertive of the candidates to say i will take on trump. that's going to be part of the job description if you want that slot and finally, rubio by not picking a state and not win everywhere, i think it's hurting him everywhere. there's nowhere where he's putting in the time some of his rivals are state by state. >> we heard the rubio campaign talking about a three, two, one strat ri. finish third in iowa, second in new hampshire and win south carolina and then you're on down into florida, a place where they think they can do well. how do you see his prospects? >> the negative attack adds are a big component.
3:16 am
i was in iowa with marco earlier this week. >> what's going on there? >> he's getting big crowds. it was 13 below and 150 people there in the middle of iowa. he's gaining in iowa while ted cruz is gaining from this big boost. his numbers are really, really climbing in new hampshire. look at the polls. ted cruz, the candidate everybody hates has strong favorability ratings.
3:17 am
>> speaking of first choices, the polls that came out yesterday and anybody who thinks donald trump should not be president, in florida, 48% and head to head with hillary clinton beating her 47-42. this is florida. >> we didn't put that up. in that same poll he's beating hillary 47-42. >> yes. this is florida. not some whacky state. this is one of the three or four swing states. >> they're checking it right now. >> while they're checking that, again, mika. i'll say this. you were the first person i've heard on tv saying that donald trump could win the nomination and you were the first person about three or four weeks ago that said everybody, just stop it.
3:18 am
donald trump could win the general election. if these numbers are correct or donnie just dreamed them. >> speaking of hillary clinton, supporters are continuing to highlight senator sanders views after quoted in the new york times saying republicans won't touch him. >> you think they would use a hammer and sickle logo? >> i wouldn't put it past them. they have been terribly unfair in their attacks. it's what they do. one of my colleagues said the republican attack machine has chain saws for hands. the point i was trying to make
3:19 am
is bernie has not felt those chain saws and they would come out with a vengeance if he's the nominee. it would be absolutely possible for a socialist to win in states like missouri. states like indiana, ohio, pennsylvania. it is very heart, i think for most americans to see how socialism cure the problems we're facing. there's a lot of work we'll have to do but we need to bring the country together. people are angry and they want to blow everything up. >> i like their a lot. i'm reminded who she is. she is innocent. talking about the republican attack machine and the chain saws. i set there and was worried for
3:20 am
her. she would never be so shrewd and vicious as to pile $2 million into a republican opponent's primary campaign. so she could get him elected and run against him in the general election and paint him as a right wing sociopath. she is right. republicans are mean and democrats are innocent. >> you know what, she's a surrogate for hillary clinton. >> she's aggressive. i love her. >> i read the quote, exactly what she just explained yesterday, this is not what i think. i don't think bernie sanders is a communist but socialism now is the next attack. we did guns, health care. >> clair was the first person about six months ago to come on our show and talk about he's a socialist.
3:21 am
>> sort of like martia, martia, martia. they think he's going to be easy to run against. they're similar, personal, physical dynamics that are going to make bernie sanders much harder to run against and swat away than they think.
3:22 am
>> sort of like your description of running against a woman years ago. do you understand? >> what's harder? >> yeah, i think bernie sanders is tough, aggressive, tireless and if they try and kick him around it's going to look bad. >> so trump verses sanders, who do you think wins? i think trump will. >> i'm not going to make a guess on that. >> trump wins by 10 points if it's trump verses sanders. if democrats want to lose pick sanders. if they want to win, pick clinton. >> everybody was saying about donald trump six months ago, two months ago, one month ago. >> that may be true but i'm talking about, i'm still on the
3:23 am
democratic ledger for a moment. if we pick sanders, what do you say again? trump wins in a land slide. >> we'll get to your argument and you could be right. i think you are saying if it's clinton, trump wins. so we're saying if it's sander, trump definitely wins. >> i think if i were donald trump i had rather run against hillary clinton. a product of washington d.c. for many years. >> we don't have time to explain why even though i explained it yesterday. >> we'll come back. >> the headlines we have this morning, this has been another tough day for the markets overseas. closing down more than 2%. it was worse than china where the index dropped more than 3% after yesterday's 249 drop in
