tv Hardball With Chris Matthews MSNBC January 21, 2016 11:00pm-12:01am PST
11:00 pm
people don't even think about "the national review." i guess they want to get a little publicity. but that's a dying paper. >> big numbers in iowa. let's play "hardball." >> good evening. welcome home out there to ted cruz. a new poll shows that donald trump has gotten his message across about where ted cruz is coming from. the new cnnorc poll has cruz to a halt in iowa down to 26% with trump pulling ahead to 37%, an 11 point double digit jump on the one-time canadian. bernie sanders looks headed for daily double on american
11:01 pm
politics. way up in new hampshire already. the poll out tonight has him at an outstanding 51% in iowa to hillary clinton's 43%. 50% usually means gold in politics. we will get to bernie and hillary next and dig deep. first this wild situation where trump is standing for many reasonable establishment republicans as the last stand against the menacing cruz. there is an old expression about how you treat people and how you get treated by people because of it. what goes around comes around. ted cruz is getting his own treatment by other republicans. some he has called liars, people like john mccain who won't give cruz the minimum regard of being constitutionally eligible. they just don't like cruz. bob dole told the "new york times" the party would suffer cataclysmic.
11:02 pm
and here is what dole told my colleague last month. >> could you support ted cruz if he ends up with the nomination? >> well, i might oversleep thatp day. >> taking a page from the play book. >> what we are doing is we are trying to educate the people of iowa he is the biggest opponent of renewable fuels. he is heavily financed by big oil. he has supported renewable fuels and i believe it would be a big mistake for iowa to support him. >> according to the -- trent lott says he would take trump over cruz. robert murdoch tweets cruz bets uniting white conservatives is enough to win.
11:03 pm
the wall street journal ran a scathing editorial against cruz by calling him a phony for his new york values attack on trump. mr. trump is a better politician than imagined and he is becoming a better candidate. if ted cruz is every man then hillary clinton is mother teresa. hallie jackson is with the cruz campaign and robert costas. we want to hear from all three of you. first of all, katy tur, what do you make of numbers that show trump rather dramatically ahead in iowa? >> couple things. one of them is that cnnorc poll is talking about first time or caucus goers, new caucus goers. that is what we have been seeing people that maybe have not caucused in the past, if they come out they are going to be generally supporting donald trump and that will put him over
11:04 pm
the edge. if we see people caucused in the past come out that is where ted cruz's numbers are better. it depends whether or not he is able to get the first time caucus goers out. i think the likely answer is when we go to rallies in iowa sometimes people are waiting for hours out in the bitter cold, negative temperatures at some point waiting to get into the donald trump rallies. the idea that they won't show up at a caucus venue seems a little bit absurd to me. donald trump says that he is leading because essentially he is the better candidate. what he has been trying to do is cast doubt when it comes to ted cruz for the past few weeks, cast doubt in eligibility, about the loans from goldman sachs and citi bank saying he talks like a debater. he is trying to question, make voters question ted cruz. so far it seems to be working.
11:05 pm
>> here is trump himself at a rally today in las vegas basking in these rising poll numbers. >> cruz is going down. he is going down. he is having a hard time. he looks like a nervous wreck. he had his moment. he had his moment. he had his moment and he blew it. >> let's go to hallie jackson on how cruz is taking the numbers. what is he doing to undermine the credibility of the numbers? >> so far i think the cruz campaign would be pointing to the organization that they have on the ground in iowa, touting its strength and the fact that they have been there in iowa for a very long time and trying to put boots on the ground where they need them. the other thing ted cruz is trying to do is undermine donald trump and paint him as an establishment guy. you ask what is the reaction of people who may or may not approve? talking to folks here in manchester a couple of students
11:06 pm
said it is a little bit of a stretch to paint donald trump as establishment although that doesn't mean it is not going to work for cruz in the long run. you have to point out everybody gone after trump hasn't done it and hasn't improved much at all. we will see if the strategy works for ted cruz. >> he is trying to tar trump with the label of establishment candidate. it is more like 10,000 watt bulb emblazoned with the word establishment. here is cruz yesterday. watch how many times he says that word. >> washington establishment is rushing over to support donald trump. mr. trump is welcoming the support of the washington establishment. he is a deal maker. the washington establishment knows who is willing to keep the gravy train going. let me encourage other members
11:07 pm
of the establishment to keep supporting donald trump. more and more the establishment calling out their support for donald trump. he said he was the establishment. the establishment. he is attracted to donald trump. you can see why the establishment is unifying behind him. >> it is very familiar to all of us. what do you make of this like woody allen movie the keyword is establishment? he is treating his audience like they are idiots. how many times do you are to say something to make the point? does anybody think donald trump is part of washington? he is not part of the establishment. he has never held office. he has never been a delegate. how does he figure as an establishment figure? your thoughts? >> senator cruz is using the label because he needs trump to be seen as establishment especially after governor palin has endorsed trump.
11:08 pm
you see some elements of the right coming towards trump. cruz is trying to push back and say i'm the lone conservative in the race. this is deeply personal not just political. the establishment figures of the republican party have a distaste for cruz going back to 2013 in the government shutdown. the way he handled primaries in 2014. the knives are after cruz and he is battling from all sides. >> let me come back to my argument. what goes around comes around. i have heard it from lobbiests and politicians. they always say that. every time a guy gets in trouble they go what goes around comes around in other words the way you behave day to day ends up in your score card. does he -- i should go to hally on this. does he know what happened to him? does he know this has come home to roost calling people liars and trashing people? >> how do you not see that?
11:09 pm
what ted cruz would say and what he has said to me and others in the past is massaging this that you mentioned liars comments saying you have mitch mcconnell saying one thing behind doors and pushes back a little. he has worn this establishment hate like a blanket especially in this election season when it does him a lot of good to be the outsider. you have to look at what senator lindsey graham said on capitol hill talking about donald trump or ted cruz like get shot or get poisoned. it is pretty much death either way. i am paraphrasing there. donald trump is using that. he says these guys in d.c. like me because i can cut deals. i can't do everything by executive action so i am able to go to washington and get the support that ted cruz cannot. >> i think it is interesting. in the paper today saying it
11:10 pm
could be the greatest irony of all times if the establishment begins to come out as some are for trump. ted cruz has the ability to tick off pretty much everyone. here is what he said about the late president kennedy. >> jfk would be a republican today. he stood for religious liberty. some men see things as they are and ask why. i see things that never were and ask why not. >> you know, it's impossible to come up with a list of how many ithings cruz has been wrong on. that was bobby kennedy. everybody who covers history knows that. that is the line he used to cue the press. it was very well known if anybody pays attention to history.
11:11 pm
obviously ted cruz pays no attention to history. kennedy's grand son responded in an oped writing i find this notion and suggestion that ted cruz is somehow taking up my grand father's mantle absurd. he would be excited about how far we have come as a nation since 1963. he would feel a sense of urgency about the challenges that lie ahead and most certainly would not be a republican. it was reminiscent of this famous moment in the vice presidential debate between dan quail and lloyd benson. >> i have as much experience in the congress as jack kennedy did when he sought the presidency. >> senator, i served with jack kennedy. i knew jack kennedy. jack kennedy was a friend of mine. senator, you are no jack kennedy.
11:12 pm
>> why would senator who everybody tells me went to princeton and harvard and is very smart be such a dingbat about history inthat is the right word for it? >> i am a reporter and my sense is with cruz there is a confidence that has propelled his candidacy but rubs a lot of people in congress and the republican party the wrong way. they see swagger and flare for the dramatic that has made his own party his foil and his target and they don't like it. >> doesn't anybody who works with him know what jack kennedy said and what bobby kennedy said and when he does his imitation of one he gets the guy wrong? he is swinging for the fences with i don't know a roll of toilet paper. thank you katy tur and hallie jackson and robert costa. warning signs. hillary clinton and the democratic establishment getting nervous about bernie sanders. wait until they see the numbers tonight.
11:13 pm
sanders rise in the polls has coincided with a more forceful warning call. i'm going to speak with a top bernie adviser tonight. sarah palin facing back lash for her comments that seem to blame president obama for her son's misbehavior. veterans groups are not pleased with the former half governor's comments in the wake of her son track's domestic violence arrest. 2015 goes down in the history books as the world's warmest in record. has the time come for science deniers to face the facts. the "hardball" round table will tell me something i don't know.
11:14 pm
guys, to celebrate super bowl 50 i'm rewarding fans with a special offer. order a large pizza and get a second large pizza for 50 cents. 50 cents?! that's pocket change! if only we had pockets... what? purely decorative. get a large,1-topping pizza for only 50 cents when you order any large pizza at regular menu price. add our new brookie for just $6 more. better ingredients. better pizza. better football. papa john's.com donald trump has certainly made the republican primaries more interesting. could another new yorker shake up the general election? a new online poll shows if
11:15 pm
11:17 pm
>> i will remind people of the facts that the economy does a lot better when we have a democrat in the white house. >> welcome back to "hardball," that was hillary clinton in iowa driving home the biggest difference that she is a democrat and he is not. clinton took direct aim at sanders by making the argument that she is more electable
11:18 pm
choice and best suited to work within the system to get things done. >> i'm not interested in ideas that sound good on paper but will never make it in the real world. that gets us to the choice that you have to make in this caucus. senator sanders and i share many of the same goals but we have different records and different ideas about how to drive progress. in theory there is a lot to like about some of his ideas but in theory isn't enough. a president has to deliver in reality. >> she is working hard with less than two weeks to go until the iowa caucuses hillary clinton is feeling the squeeze. as i mention a new research poll shows bernie sanders having pulled ahead by eight points. he is at 51. that is an impressive number to her 43. 43 would normally be impressive. sanders has strong leads in iowa and new hampshire where he has been leading which must be making clinton's team very nervous.
11:19 pm
joining me now is tad devine and sabrina sadiki. what is your big break in iowa? what is going on? we have seen 43% of caucus goers say it is not a bad word. they call themselves socialists. what changed in the spectrum that puts bernie sanders in a real potential to win? >> i don't think anything has changed. i think bernie sanders has a message connecting with voters. he understands the economy this country is rigged and understands sending the wealth to the top. that message is the reason he is running. >> if you had one issue to run the nondemocratization of american politics where big money doesn't just sit there and somebody is having a nice vacation in hawaii.
11:20 pm
>> i agree. >> they are rigging the political process. >> when i worked for al gore i argued he shouldn't talk about campaign finance. this country has changed so fundamentally people understand that this corrupt system of campaign finance is holding -- here is what it means. when we have super packs who take unlimited amounts of money from corporations and individuals and use it to buy elections that is what is destroying american democracy. he recognizes that and says no superpacks. i will rely on small contributions. >> how does hillary clinton having done three speeches for goldman sachs fit into that? >> i think it hurts. i think people understand if you are beholding to the banks whether financing of your campaign or money taking directly from them you are not able to fix economic problem. >> is she on the tape?
11:21 pm
you are saying she took money. >> she done something illegal? she has not. >> is she beholden to goldman sachs? >> i think she is not just to them but those funding her campaigns. >> do they buy her in. >> i'm not saying they bought her. >> you are making the same point. >> i just told you the words i accept. the system is corrupt. she is part of the system. >> bernie is not part of the system. he didn't do it. >> he rejected the system. he could have taken money from -- >> are you kidding? never. he wrote a book and gave the money to food kitchens in vermont. >> this is a tough one for secretary clinton because once the sand is through the hour glass i think it is idea logical. i think anger against the rich,
11:22 pm
the billionaires and millionaires is different than it used to be. >> absolutely. i think that is why you have seen the urgency with which she sharpened her attacks and really honed in on electability argument to make an appeal that anger is not enough but have to have a candidate who is pragmatic. >> how does she prove -- i think she has the track record to be a better for the center. she will go to the center better than sanders will. you look at the matchups, it's not there. hillary is not beating the bejesus out of donald trump or ted cruz. those numbers are very close. >> there is an extent to which she comes with a lot more baggage. the amount of attention focussed on hillary clinton in terms of attacks from republicans. >> you say sanders would be better? >> when faced against a republican there isn't indication you can put too much talk into early poll numbers. >> what does your guy say if i
11:23 pm
say hillary clinton is part of the clinton family foundation. everybody says it they are center left. your guy is hard left and said so. how does he move to the center for the general the suburban moderate republican voter? how does he get that vote? >> we are not going there. >> you are not going there in november? >> because it is not 1968. america is a very different place than it was. when i worked -- >> there is no socialist -- you have people like senator from pennsylvania. >> there are two theories. go to the middle which is the clinton theory and expand the electorate which is sanders theory. we get new people in the process and young people participating. >> so bernie sanders manages to win this series of primaries and wins the most delegates and goes to convention and wins the nomination he will not turn to center. >> that's recognize.
11:24 pm
>> he will not pick a running mate to the center? >> our strategy to win the election is to expand the american electorate and bring young people in, to get people hope who don't participate in the process. we will expand it -- >> you don't see -- i see johnson landslide against a guy who is totally out of the mainstream on the other side. >> how does the kool aid taste? i know you are a smart guy you have this religion i have never heard before. you were different. this is a hell of a statement. do you believe it? he is not going to the center. >> i will have to believe it when i see it. these are huge numbers for bernie sanders and for donald trump today coming out of iowa. we are going to talk both races
11:27 pm
this just got interesting. why pause to take a pill? or stop to find a bathroom? cialis for daily use is approved to treat both erectile dysfunction and the urinary symptoms of bph, like needing to go frequently, day or night. tell your doctor about all your medical conditions and medicines, and ask if your heart is healthy enough for sex do not take cialis if you take nitrates for chest pain, or adempas for pulmonary hypertension, as it may cause an unsafe drop in blood pressure. do not drink alcohol in excess. side effects may include headache, upset stomach, delayed backache or muscle ache. to avoid long-term injury, get medical help right away for an erection lasting more than four hours. if you have any sudden decrease or loss in hearing or vision, or any symptoms of an allergic reaction, stop taking cialis and get medical help right away.
11:28 pm
ask your doctor about cialis and a $200 savings card welcome back to "hardball." the new poll out of iowa shows the presidential race is shifting on both sides democrat and republican among likely democratic caucus goers bernie sanders opened up an eight point lead. among the republicans donald trump has reclaimed his spot at the tom of the league leading ted cruz by 11 points. a large portion of respondents did not turn out to caucus so keep in mind the data assumes a significant and larger turnout in 2016. i am joined by the "hardball" round table.
11:29 pm
in reverse order does hillary clinton have a way of turning this around in the next week and a half? >> i think she can. i think it will be difficult and tighter than they want it to be. she is the front running candidate in the party. i think in iowa there is still a lot of support for her. i don't think you see as big a shift in terms of the amount of people to turn out. i think trump will drive a lot more folks. i think more than bernie. >> i am looking at college towns and i wonder with iowa state and university of iowa, drake i'm going to be looking caucus night and see if they do what they did with president obama. >> on the republican side donald trump -- >> let's stay democratic side. hillary clinton when is she going to stop the sand from coming through the hour glass? >> she is having a rally with demi lovato. >> who is she?
11:30 pm
>> she is a pop singer very popular with young people. she is trying to reach out to younger people who would be interested in that sort of thing. >> does she remind you of hillary clinton? this singer you are talking about? >> i don't know that she reminds me of hillary clinton. she is definitely a very good singer. i think a lot of young people like her songs skbrmpt the and will be moved to vote for hillary clinton. >> they would be moved to come to an event. >> my belief is if you want bruce springsteen because you want working class white guys and you have to connect with them somewhat when you bring in the person. but what do you do here? hillary is trying to get this young sooner who i never heard of. >> have you heard of katy perry? >> i'm out of it. i don't know hockey and i don't know modern music.
11:31 pm
i know tony bennett. >> you talk to people on both campaigns this poll that is out and you put that caveat in there they are taking it with a grain of salt. they know that the numbers are a lot closer than the polls would suggest. >> i didn't bring you on here so you can buzz kill here. act on numbers. there is something going on. hillary clinton lost iowa in 2008. maybe she will lose now. >> young people -- >> but in order for iowa 2016 to be like iowa 2008 and bernie sanders he has to pull people
11:32 pm
out in the way that barack obama -- i am not going to be -- >> how old do you have to be to vote in iowa? >> 17. >> 21. >> 17. you have to be eligible. >> that is the kind of thing you learn here on "hardball." all you have to do is be 18. 17 is fine. you go to college campuses. >> she is splitting that youth vote a little bit. the demy lovotto voter is not a bernie sanders voter. >> you are telling me how they will vote. >> "hardball" round table. the "hardball" round table staying with us. sarah palin blames her son's ptsd on the president. much to the dismay of veterans groups. this is "hardball," place for politics.

11:37 pm
with report of domestic violence, possession of a fire arm, an assault on his girlfriend. the girlfriend told police he punched her and threatened suicide. at the rally yesterday palin said she could relate to families of veterans with ptsd but suggested president obama is to blame. here she is. >> our vets and you deserve a commander in chief who will respect what it is that our forces go through. i can talk personally about this. i guess it is kind of an elephant in the room because my own family going through what we are going through today with my son, a combat vet having served in the striker brigade fighting for you all america in a war zone. my son like so many others come back a bit different, hardened, come back wondering if there is that respect. it starts from the top.
11:38 pm
the question, though, that comes from our own president where they have to look at him and wonder do you know what we go through? do you know what we are trying to do to secure america? >> now veterans groups are pushing back against palin saying the president isn't to blame for her son's behavior. the director of the nonpartisan organization told nbc news it's not president obama's fault that sarah palin's son has ptsd. it is a very serious problem, complicated mental health industry. i hope this doesn't become a portable chew toy. track palin enlisted in 2007 and spent a year in iraq while george w. bush is president. >> she is trying to deal with the fact of a problem in the family. every politician seems to have a problem in the family from billy carter to sam houston.
11:39 pm
there are relatives out there. >> the palin family has had a lot of run ins with police and this drama. instead of having the story become about that she was able to frame it as how she wanted them best to handle it which is this is a story about president obama being bad to vets. >> i think they already are predisposed -- >> under the rubric of it's always obama's fault. >> obama derangement syndrome. it was from their point of view that campaign's perspective was brilliant what she did and also despicable what she did. and to try to paint it directly on the president the presidents of her son is just wrong. also, i think just sort of in doing that belittling the real issue here of ptsd is a very
11:40 pm
serious -- she could have talked about her son and ptsd in a way that didn't overly politicize. >> here donald trump was asked about palin's remarks telling cnn he suggested that she talk about her son. >> i said it would be appropriate and something that is very important to discuss not even for her son but for so many other sons and daughters coming back from the middle east where they have near traumatic problems and i tell them -- >> i wonder if he told her to bring it up as a blame the president thing. >> it didn't sound like it. i could see how he would want her to address it. the rumors are circling. she missed an event. i was at that event when she was a no show. the campaign had said she would
11:41 pm
be at that event that day. she did not show up. the point when they got to tulsa she had to say something to explain her absence or address what was going on because it was overshadowing her endorsement of donald trump. >> in normal american politics this would be a big problem for a candidate. the sun shows up in the police books. using a fire arm or having a fire arm. >> she didn't deny that those things happen. >> here is the thing. this isn't the first time. this is not the first time that you eluded to it earlier that track or someone in the family has been involved in a police incident. >> under normal circumstances the family didn't have the problems they wouldn't have to do this. people understand ptsd is a serious issue.
11:42 pm
>> this is the aspect of sarah palin. she is a fantastic representative to a certain part of the country that feels disrespected. they don't have a lot of advances or obvious advantages. they don't like the way they are treated by us, by the media. this kind of thing is unfortunately part of the epidemics, heroin thing, all part of that world. they are not great. she is not a person who could be president of the united states why he is going after somebody saying should be president or do you think she is a good class representative. i don't think she is up for the presidency or vice presidency or governor of alaska. the round table is staying with us. they are going to tell me something i don't know. this is "hardball," place for politics.
11:44 pm
11:47 pm
we are back with the "hardball" round table. >> today the mother of eric garner, the man killed by police endorsed hillary clinton for president. this is significant because she joins the mothers of trayvon martin and the mother of jordan davis, the kid killed over loud music as people who have endorsed hillary clinton, people, african-american mothers who lost kids to police brutality. and the key thing is that hillary clinton is talking about how to be strategic. it crystallizes right there the
11:48 pm
distinction that hillary clinton. >> eight years ago the african-american democratic vote was her challenge. this year it is her money in the bank. isn't it interesting. >> the other way to distinguish herself is hitting that health care plan that was released the other night. says wants to tear it up. her supporters don't believe that is what senator sanders wants to do. i polled a bunch of them and they were not buying that. also saying that they wouldn't necessarily want to see taxes raised to pay for such a health care plan. >> they want to be a socialist? >> this was the hillary clinton rally. >> that was a hell of a big deal. >> i'm going to define the word bama for you. it is a d.c. slang term being defined by our mayor and her handling of the snow problem that you saw on wednesday night.
11:49 pm
half inch of snow and five hour delay. she lied and said they put out trucks. she said they put out salt trucks and were no salt trucks until 9:30 at night. they are using beet juice as chemical treater. we have a huge snow storm coming. >> the buses were not allowed to get on anybody neb avenue i hear. they had to stop them because they were afraid they couldn't stop at wisconsin avenue. it's that scary. that's a half inch of snow. somebody said something brilliant today, john and everybody. they said d.c. is the most northern southern city and it still acts like a southern town. thank you so much for that. remember when kennedy once said it had the efficiency of the south and the charm of the north. anyway, round table. jon stan, francesca chambers and jonathan capehart. up next 20:0015 breaks a record for the world's hottest year ever. so why isn't climate change accepted as reality? you're watching "hardball," the place for politics.
11:52 pm
11:53 pm
welcome back to "hardball." even as millions along the east coast now are preparing for a monumental blizzard, scientists from nasa and noaa, the country's top experts at the national oceanic and atmospheric administration, have established this fact. 2015, the year just passed, was the hottest year in history. it smashed 2014's global temperature record, and it wasn't even close.
11:54 pm
but according to the "washington post" the new figures "could fuel debate over climate change in an election year in which the two main political parties remain divided over what to do about global warming and indeed whether it exists or not." here's some reaction from the right politically after president obama spoke about making climate change a priority. >> mr. president, i say this with as much respect as you deserve. screw global warming. what the hell is wrong with you? if you actually believe that global warming is the biggest problem we face, with terror all around the world and $18 trillion debt, 9 of which is yours, no real allies left that trust us, riots in our streets, riots in our university campuses, race relations worse than i've seen since the 1960s, and a distrust of our fellow americans unlike anything i've
11:55 pm
ever seen, you sir are either delusional or you're the dumbest son of a [ bleep ] on the planet. >> i won so many environmental awards. shock shockingly. no, it's true. i want really immaculate air. i want clean crystal water. i want a lot of things. it is a disgrace what's going on. and to have this man embarrass us by standing up and saying that global warming is our biggest threat, we've got to get him out so fast and thank goodness we only have a year left. >> well, that's pandering of the worst kind. joining me right now is the director of nasa's goddard center institute of space studies gavin schmidt. thank you for joining us about this. now, noaa, who's been keeping the numbers since 1880 on the temperature of our climate? >> so these are station that's have been kept by national weather services all across the world. the u.k. office, the national weather service in the u.s., thebbrazilians.
11:56 pm
it's a network of station that's goes back to the 19th century. nasa and noaa, we both independently collate these information, combine it with ship measurements from the oceans, buoy measurements from the oceans, and come up with an analysis of the global mean temperature normally every year. and this year, as you already reported, was a scorcher. >> what has caused the scorch year? >> so the long-term trends, that's really what's most important. this record would not have happened without those long-term trends. they're being driven mainly by the increase in greenhouse gases. and that's dominated by carbon dioxide, which comes from the burning of fossil fuels, oil, gas, and the like. >> so the heat's being captured within the atmosphere. is it a trend or is it a cycle? some people say we're just going through a cycle. i'm giving you the devil's advocate role here. >> no. it's a trend. we look at all the things that could be changing climate. we look at internal oscillations. we look at natural cycles. we look at volcanoes, the sun, deforestation, air pollution. all of those things have
11:57 pm
distinct fingerprints for how they change the climate. and when we look at what's actually going on, the heat in the ocean, the heat in the atmosphere, there's only one thing that really fits and that's the increase of greenhouse gases. those are totally attributable to most of the trend that you've seen over the last 40 years. >> and last question, what's the danger here, say, over the next -- if these projections continue, if this trend continues? >> we're already seeing the impacts. we're seeing the impacts with heat waves. we're seeing the impacts with intense precipitation. we're seeing the impacts on sea level rise, changes in the arctic sea ice. there are many, many changes that we're already seeing. and that's just going to get worse. and that's only with one degree c above the 19th century. >> you thanks so much, gavin schmidt, for joining us tonight with the science. joining me is a guy who writes about science, chris mooney of the "washington post" who wrote that great piece about 2015 being the hottest year on record. he wrote it today. let's take a look at what ted cruz said yesterday about the scientific measurement of climate change. >> the computer models predicted

that the earth would warm dramatically. there's one little problem. the satellites that actually measure the temperature that we've launched into the air and they measure the temperature, they have recorded no significant warming whatsoever for the last 18 years. >> chris mooney joins us from the "washington post." i know you're an objective reporter. you don't want to get into this back and forth. but the science here. let's talk about some things. we have some pictures here. let's talk about -- look at these pictures of glaciers up in alaska. that's part of the united states. look at the before and after. you look at this picture on the left, which is a glacier. you look on the right. it's a sea coast. and there's another picture just like it up there. there's another one there. there's another picture. this is a dramatic difference in reality. we have photography here. it's not trick. it's not photoshopping. this is real. >> absolutely. climate scientists have been pretty clear and they have been increasingly certain that humans are driving climate change just

as you heard from gavin schmidt. i mean, the degree of certainty that they ascribe to that conclusion has just gone up and up and up and now it's very high. >> what did you make of what ted cruz, the senator said? what is he talking about when he says satellite readings aren't proving it? >> well, i think the first thing you need to know is again when nasa and noaa announced this temperature record that record is not based upon the satellite record that ted cruz is talking about. it's based upon measurements of the planet's surface from thermometers, weather stations -- >> regular readings from the 188 0z. >> right. and you say that's what nasa and noaa use and you say why do they use that? they're -- >> this is one of the cases where i have to detest the arguments made by glenn beck and others. years ago when i heard him deny this, why are you doing it? is anything important -- as important as trying to save this planet? i don't know what people think about. it's not a game. and it is our biggest long-term concern. obviously terrorism is right now. but in the long term saving the only place we have to live is fairly important if you think about it. that takes effort, though, glenn. anyway, thank you, chris mooney of the "washington post."

that's "hardball" for now. thanks for being with us. tonight on "all in" -- >> cruz is going down. he looks like a nervous wreck. >> a new poll shows trump pulling ahead of cruz in iowa. >> we're saying the washington establishment run behind donald trump. plus, bernie sanders runs into his own establishment woes. >> i was somewhat confused when senator sanders said, well, planned parenthood and human rights campaign, they're part of the establishment. then veterans slam sarah palin for connecting ptsd to president obama. >> it starts from the top. >> iraq war veteran and co-founder of vote vet jon soltz is here to respond. and as a massive winter storm bears down on the east coast, just where is governor christie? >> the lieutenant governor's there. and she's handling things on the ground there.
